Rather than looking primarily for traffic tickets you can leave and unlock bicycle in a high traffic area and wait for someone to steal it you can reel in the criminals left and right all day now just imagine if 90% of the patrol officers were doing that throughout their shift

I've work as a social counseler with abused child and i'm a FF.. The "see things" part is so true. The hardest part is constantly witnessing people at their worst.. But remember, you have the potential to be their first step from worst to best. Stay safe, be brave. Good work guys

Congrats! Nervousness means you care👍 The body reacts to nervousness and excitement the same way, so state “I’m excited!” Rehearse scenarios in your mind, seek continuous training, do things that make you step out of your comfort zone (ie stepping up on big calls), and take care of your mind and body every day. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Be well and do great out there! 👍💪

It's a boring fucking job most suitable for people with slightly below average intelligence. You're making it out to be the biggest deal on the planet, but it's just working for a living and you're going to have to work with people who are sick, disturbed and pathologically arrogant. I'm not talking about criminals. I'm talking about working with fucking COPS.

Dude... Do something better with your life. I recommend don't become a police officer. But hey, it's your life. It use to be an honor to become a police officer; today, it has become an embarrassment and a disgrace. Many police officers have brought shame and disgrace to The Badge. I personally would not recommend anybody to become a police officer for nothing.

@The10CodeMindset Well you feel that strongly about it then go for it, that's the way I was back in the day, and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity. If you do manage to get hired, I would like to hear from you in about 7 years which is when the burn out usually starts. But by then you might have a family that you need to support, which makes it much more difficult to walk away. Good luck.

Great video. I retired from the “job” in 2021 after 35 years 4 months. All at the rank of officer. I worked K9/gangs/SWAT/Air Support/street crimes/Rapid Response Team (crowd control). My favorite was good old uniform patrol. My motto was 3 fold: We are doing the Good Lord’s work, we will always be the good guys and they will always need us. I loved the job and I never let the enthusiasm flame blow out. Thank you for encouraging potential new officers. God bless.

Just do it. Don’t even question it. I have sat behind a desk and made a lot of money and I hated every minute of it. I got into software because it was the thing to do in those days I got forced into it. After almost 24 years I am done. I have always been a physical person doing boxing judo and BJJ all my life and I want to get out of this rut I am in. So the sooner you realize this about yourself just go do it and do t look back brother.

Starting my 19th year in this field. It's changed so much since 2005. It was frustrating at times back then, but I would have done it for free. Now, I cannot wait for retirement and to get away from this vicious cycle called "the system". The system that cares not for the victim, but for the offender. The system that now hides in the grass just waiting to put an Officer in prison. To all of the new kids getting into this profession, take care of YOURSELF first. This job turned into something I never thought it would. Best of lluck
@The10CodeMindset

I started in ‘07, left in 2022, and was amazed how much things had changed in just 15 years. I equate law enforcement to real estate now, “Location. Location. Location.” I live in a location where the Sheriff and the police make it clear they will do their best to catch those who need to be caught, those traveling and commit certain crimes are held until they see a judge, and the local courts actually believe in sentencing if defendants are found guilty. You take care of yourself. If showing up for the job becomes too stressing on your health (and retirement is still several years away) there is no shame in pursuing a new opportunity.

A comedy actress here in Europe explained at age around 40 she experienced a personal transformation changing her mindset from "stressful" to "happy" state of mind...or from hustling to calm. It has a lot of health advantages for your mind and body when you are living happily in the present moment and meeting friends who have the same philosophy of happiness empathy gratitude. She is single though. Her father is also her role model in a sense of humor and not taking life too seriously. The only disadvantage of living "happily" in the present moment, not living in the past is that you may have to start problems with your memory. That you feel so happy at the moment enjoying time, that when someone asks you, what were you doing in the morning, she doesn't remember because she partially loses track of time and also because she stops living in linear time. After 5 minutes of thinking she actually remembers what she was doing but it takes time. That her only priority started to be whether people felt happy in her presence that day. But it seems if half of society will live in this happy state of mind and gratitude for each other in the community the cops would have much less work because they wouldn't suffer from anxiety and depression. Being happy at the moment may affect your memory sometimes. or you remember the good things.

That's awesome you feel called to do it, especially in San Francisco. At least they're refunding the police now lol If I misunderstood your perspective then I apologize, but go in it with the intention of doing the right thing for those who call and catching those who need to be caught when crime is committed. Avoid seeking hero status. I worked with some of them who wanted the accolades and hero awards...they weren't well liked.

Being a uniform beat copper is not the place to be even though that's what I used to tbink.. if you really want to pursue a law enforcement career get a degree in a field that could be applicable and go federal. thank you for your service to the corp. I agree...Street patrol is very demanding and much much...different than other positions in law enforcement.. Its not just enforcing the laws, its about being part of the community, and serving that community. The odd hours, working holidays, shift work, PAPERWORK, and being subpoena to court are all part of being a local....And most people do not want to handle that kind of liability or responsibility. In that sense, than yea its probably just better to transition to be a reserve police officer or go work for corporate America. I came from local than went on to to become a fed with one of the three letter agencies. It is so much slower and stagnant on the federal side...It honestly feels like working for corporate America, but you have a badge and a gun lol. Anyways, subscribed to your channel.

I’m so torn between two careers. I’ve been working towards becoming a commercial airline pilot for the past few years, but recently got involved with police explorers program and am learning it’s something I really like. So many pros and cons, I’m already deep into flying but I don’t enjoy the 3-4 days away from home schedule, or the relative inactivity of flying fixed wing. I’ve been immensely researching the job and know the negatives. I guess my biggest concerns are the mental & physical tolls, and danger of the job. I feel like I won’t really know how I’ll handle it until I actually do it, because scenarios are not the same as real life. I’ve been thinking about it nonstop for the past couple months, it’s like no matter how much I convince myself piloting is a better career… law enforcement career finds a way to sneak back into my life and make me second guess myself

@@The10CodeMindset That’s what I have been considering. The department in an explorer with has a very robust aviation unit, including airplanes and helicopters, but of course I would have to do time in the jails and streets before that, which I personally wouldn’t mind. Im using the connections from the explorers to try to get a helicopter ride a long & regular ride along. The other thing I think about a lot though is the pay difference. I live in CA so it’s not cheap and commercial aviation pays a lot more. I’ve been thinking about being a police officer for years. I really believe I would love the work. I just really don’t know if I can handle the mental stress. Are you able to work through things and show up the next day at the top of your game? I have a really good career and am on a good path but I can’t stop wanting to be a police officer. I don’t want to destroy my mental health for a career I had no business being in to begin with. Any advice would be great and I appreciate this video!

I understand. Take care of your mental health just as bad as you want to be a police officer and it can only help you and the public because they deserve a good cop when 911 is called. Get into it for the right reasons, never stop learning on the job, and growing your mental and physical strength. After 9 years on the job and I figured it out, game changer. Best wishes to you Wyatt. Not saying you won't be affected, but active and consistent mental health awareness and action helps.

There’s a lot of truth in this. I’ve been a LEO for a little over a year and half and I’ve had 1 pursuit and 2 UOF. And for the 10pm of action to 2 hours of paperwork you’re not wrong. This last UOF I fought this dude for 10min before I was able to get a successful taser deployment. The following was my patrol car window getting kicked out and alot of medical for this guy. I spent close to 8 hours doing paperwork and the report just for that 45 minutes

i’m currently in the middle of a investigation on a man and i’ve been meeting with a detective to help find said man and give backstory. Always had the thought of being a officer in the back of my head. The more she tells me about her job as a detective since she applied after 6 years of being a officer, the more i’m wanting to pursue that path. I told her about my aspirations and she gave me information on how i can apply to be a correctional guard at a jail in the meantime since i’m 19 and that i can get into the police academy and it’ll get paid for. I’m currently working in construction and already work 10 hour shifts 5 days a week, sometimes 6. Just wanted to ask for guidance if you have the time.

I'm at a dilemma here but I really appreciate the insight you bring. I'm a 24 year old Army Vet that's currently doing "Premed" in college. The more I do school the more I have started to second guess myself and my choice to go into medicine. I've always wanted to make a positive change in peoples lives and help my community. I've considered law enforcement because I believe it is the best way to achieve this. At the same time I generally have a negative view of LEOs as the city that I am in has a myriad of scandals involving LEOs and their conduct. I'm not really sure what ill end up doing but hearing first hand experiences from an LEO certainly helps.
@The10CodeMindset
@The10CodeMindset 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing all of that, David. You can be a part of something great in law enforcement as long as you maintain a servant’s heart and take care of yourself. You could do it by being a part of the process of being a good cop in a department that is apparently troubled with bad cops, OR, work somewhere else because there is a plus to working in a city that is not where you live. Hope that makes sense. Whatever you decide, wish you the best. My good friend did 20ish years in the Army and just retired (by age) at the department where we both worked. He did 12 years there, after the Army.

I’m going for providence police on April 3rd, and barrington police on April 9th, now I’ve always wanted to become a cop, I have seen friends die to street violence, I’ve always questioned people on why they live the gang life instead of trying to get out of it. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in my city where I was born and raised, I’ve also always defended police when people talk down on all officers due to the actions of a couple of bad officers, my question is when I become a police officer will I get in trouble if I saw something I didn’t agree of being done by a fellow officer and taking control of the situation and de escalating the situation? My goal is to really make a difference, move up in the company and even though it seems impossible try and have some people have a different outlook on officers

Hello there! You won't get in trouble if an officer has sone something unlawful. If you do, then leave that department as quickly as possible. Really seems like you have your heart and mind in the right place and I applaud you. The gang life is so consuming for some as you know, and yet destructive all at the same time. I've seen too many with so much potential just waste it all, because of gang culture. One in particular comes to mind and he is back in prison right now. I have one question to ask though that scares me more than anything. I’m only 16 now but I plan to have a family one day, do you know how it can effect family life? Class 1s attend the academy for 2 weeks and are unarmed but have powers such as patrol, detain and issue tickets. The career path has always been of interest to me but you make a good point about many officers becoming burnt out with the toll it takes on the body, also the current anti police trend in the media. Do you think the seasonal opportunity is a good way to get my foot in the door? I posses a masters in criminal justice as well.

I’m sure the Masters Degree will help with your knowledge of constitutional rights and scope of authority. Some departments pay more to those with degrees too. But if you feel the call, I say do your research on which departments to apply to and then go for it! Take care of your mind and body everyday and you won’t make the mistakes I did that lead to me having mental health struggles, or at least you will be more resilient. I've noticed some things about me and I am asking for help with my choice here. I wanted for the longest time to enlist in the Airforce, or some form of military branch. Even the national guard for benefits towards college, etc. I NEVER even expected myself to say I wanted college. but I want a 2 year degree and at this college, they offer BLET. I've recently sat back and accepted a few things relating to all of these, I seem to go after jobs that involve brotherhood, a sense of accomplishment larger then me. In many ways I actually feel as if I just want a life of action. It doesn't need to be intense action, just something different every day, in other words. screw desk work, etc. I always find myself interested in jobs like fire fighting, Law enforcement, Military, I can go on. And as much as I feel like yes, this is what I want. I have self doubt, I worry so much for a future that could be bad or I feel as if I'm making the wrong choice. Doctor told me he believes there are two types of people, those taught to be resilient, and those who are naturally just resilient. He said that he expected someone of my nature, which he knows me very well to fall into the group that would do those kinda jobs. I just don't understand why I still have this back thought of self-doubt or as if I'm making a choice that will regret. But at the same time, those jobs excite me, I think at all the opportunities that I will have. the men and woman id work with. the people id meet. The lives id change. Like I WANT that. I guess its natural to have these back thoughts but I wanted to ask more deeply from me to someone I know has been down those roads. My first place of employment I've decided is a local police department, pretty well funded, etc. but I figured it would be a good start for things. Just wanted advice in general relating to all of this.
@The10CodeMindset
@The10CodeMindset Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I’ve learned that on a basic level, our brains like familiarity so that self-doubt is just your brain thinking about the “what if’s” all in an effort to protect you. Which has its place but can send someone into that “analysis paralysis”. That’s my assumption. See if you can go on a ride along. I did one at 17 years old and was sold. Approximately 10 years later, when I was 4 or so years on the job, I took a friend of mine on a ride along and he was sold. He is now a Sergeant at a city police department. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best. Take care 👍

If I may offer some advice, seek out the opportunity to go on a ride along, if at all possible. If you like it, then I say go for it. Keep looking into it, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Seems like you feel the call and I admire the passion for it. Without the dedicated and consistent help of family and friends, it would be hard to be full time police as a single parent because most daycares don't run 6a-6p or 7a-7p. Most departments run 12 hour shifts. Now if you could find part time police work OR a department that has "M-F 8-5" positions (i.e. a police department that protects schools), then you might be able to make it happen. Hope this helps. Wish you the best!

Sorry for the delayed response. From what I’m learning, the rules vary from department to department. Some require citizenship, but some will hire legal immigrants who have green cards or temporary visas with work authorization permits. I’m not well versed in immigration rules so I hope I worded that correctly. Look into where you want to work, visit that department’s website and call their recruiter to ask for details. My Mom’s side of the family is Italian, so I’m 50% Italian. Not that you asked 😂 Take care and best wishes!

Outstanding! What’s the next step? A good friend of mine worked Michigan State Police (and was assigned Flint area) for a while. He once sent me a text at 4:30am showing it was -27 degrees and his team was about to do a search warrant. 🥶 I would have froze in my steps prior to entry!

Now that's awesome you chased down a criminal with the police! $10 isn't enough for all that action by any means....not that law enforcement is much more when starting out (depending on location). Did you ever consider law enforcement?

I know when I was a kid, when I found my Dad's hill street blues set. Or my parent's movies about cops, like Passenger 57 and Police Academy. I used to put on my Dad's uniform and get a toy gun out acting like I was a Cop. Same about Miami Vice, specifically the Prodigal Son. My Dad served 25 years in Law Enforcement (1981-2006). My grandfather was a York, PA city Officer during the 1969 York Race riot, he later went on to be a detective. When I become a Police Officer. I would be a 3rd Generation Law Enforcement Officer. Based off my Dad, I learned being a cop was far from what movies depict, same about body cams. My Dad said, "Bodycams only give you insight on what calls are like. But, you have no idea what it's like truly. No movie, no bodycam footage can ever do it justice. My Dad has said to me things I won't see on those Bodycams. Like when he responded to a scene where a guy took a 12 gauge shotgun and literally blew his brains out. Or, back in 2003. When he responded to Red Lion Junior High School Shooting. Some kid armed with a Pistol shot and killed the Vice principal and then turned it on himself. My oldest cousin was there too if I'm not mistaken. I was made aware of these things. I know I did do a patrol ride along with my dad's department up in Pennsylvania for a graduation project. My Dad got in touch with his buddies that still work there after he retired and got me a ride along. It was a night shift. But, after seeing how things play out for them. I kinda get the idea, specifically about how ordinary shifts go. Even though there isn't such a thing as ordinary in this field. My Dad told me, the most important thing I gotta understand is that, not all the time will it be busy back to back. But, with being a Cop, you will have boring nights and paper work. I know I saw the Officer I did the ride along with was on his CAD reading forms and putting in paperwork. Especially for me on my ride along. I was also made aware to never say, the Q word. It'll screw their shift up with a massive amount of calls. I've gotten to understand what it's like being a cop. My Dad still holds onto paperwork he has even after his retirement. The fact he has so much says a lot to me, 9/10 of the free time you got. There is paper that needs done. Might I add, I want to go to college first at least getting an associate's degree before I go and become a police officer. Where I want to work in Florida. It's preferred to have a college degree. I want to progress through ranks and possibly get on SWAT if available.

Your Dad made a lot of great points and yes, the “paperwork” is extensive but gets easier to do with experience, and the job is still worth it as long as the location and PD work for that individual

Something he didn't mention is departmental politics. Each department is different but it exists no matter where you work. No matter how hard you try to do a good job and do the right thing, the notion of being Monday Morning Quarter Backed is always in the back of your mind. It can definitely have a direct effect on how you do your job. Dealing with the criminal element on the street and all the sad and tragic things you see, I found that much less stressful than dealing with the the powers that be. After 35+ years that's what prompted me to step down.

Thanks for commenting. I was fortunate to work at a department (most of my career) that yes, had some micromanagers, but I along with many others didn't get the Monday morning quarterback treatment as long as we were within law, policy, and were professional. So I didn't feel that internal pressure. But yet I own the fact I failed to mention that stressor in the video. Thanks for bringing it up.

I just got some information about positions available for officer trainees.

Maybe i went to the wrong office?

That makes no sense to me why an agency would say they prefer no veterans. At least 25% of today's police officers nationwide served in the military. That's a lot. Where I worked for several years, I and many others had prior military experience. Keep searching and I wish you the best!
