Emma could retire tomorrow and still be a legend of the sport forever. Also, it seems like she doesn't NEED tennis. She loves it and is great at it, but it were taken away from her tomorrow, she'd probably think "No prob. I'll concentrate on my education. Or motocross. Or become a Formula 1 driver. Or become a commentator." She's one of the few people walking the earth who has unlimited opportunities matched with the ability to exploit them.

Great to get your insight on Emma from your own experience of the WTA tour. My main concern is the pressure from the media/brands to focus on her looks and turn her into a fashion icon, which could become a massive distraction. But us Brits are very excited about her future. She seems to have everything to sustain her success, and go on to be one of the greats. She has an incredibly mature and grounded attitude, focussing on process rather than results/success. She recently said that she was looking forward to playing more top players and if she loses it's a learning experience so it's a win win! She's a problem solver because she's academically bright, and on top of that she's a fierce competitor. Technically she is very complete - her movement is amazingly fluid and she's already one of the best returners in the game. But I'm most encouraged by her single-mindedness and focus, and I really think the sky's the limit for her.

Excellent video, Meike - a sane voice in the jungle of media comments. Emma seems to be level-headed. She is intelligent, which will help, and had a grounded upbringing. But, as you rightly point out, no-one can know with certainty how the next months and years will treat her. We can only wish her well and hope that she continues to feel joy at being able to do what she loves.

Great insight. She mentioned in an interview that she never looked at social media on her phone during the 3 weeks at the open so it wasn't a distraction. I think her mindset is exceptional in that she is able to focus just on her game - what her game plan is, not worry about other players. Not worry about the environment - block out all the noise. Asked loads of times about other players during her run in the open and the answer was always the same - i'm just focused on my game, executing my game plan and the things i can control She's a great talent..

One of the most impressive things about her run is saying the rights things at the right moments. A reporter asks her about pressure and she redirected it with calm composure saying she is a qualifier and there should be no pressure. Even the aftermath of the Wimbledon exit was done very well. She did not speak until she was ready and when she was ready to speak thanked her supporters and said she will be back. At no time did she redirect hate towards the people criticising her at the time, such as Piers Morgan.

As a Brit and a tennis fan, her success at the US open was simply joyous - I had said after Wimbledon to friends that I thought she had the best chance of winning a slam of any British girl I had seen although it was impossible to see it arriving this quickly. Obviously expectations have dramatically increased - 100-1 for the US open this year - 8-1 and shorter for all of the 2022 slams - but I don't see outside expectations of her performance influencing her game. Personally, I think the biggest factor influencing her future results will be her own attitude to the game - at the moment she appears to have the drive and determination to continue working hard at her game and in the short term I would expect her game to improve - the harder part will come when the tour stops being a novelty and more of a grind and the extent to which her outside interests impinge on her commitment to tennis. The women's game has lacked a dominant player since Serena came back to the pack - I don't foresee Emma being that player in the short term but she is certainly now amongst the 20 odd women capable of winning future slams - regardless of future results she has been a huge credit to both her family and her country and I know that that is an opinion shared by everyone in this country bar the few inevitable neanderthal trolls

Sports psychology is a huge industry nowadays, and for very good reasons. Winning consistently isn't about talent, every player has talent, it's about being relentless. Never caring about anyone's opinions more than your own. Never being satisfied. Bearing that in mind, I think Emma will be very successful, her upbringing and strength of character should see her right.

On your recommendation I just watched the Mardy Fish ‘Untold’ documentary - quite scary really to see the kind of pressure that players are under to improve and maintain their ranking; also, I’ve been checking the current tournaments- Moselle, Ostrava, Sofia, Chicago- omg how those players have to go back and forth ! Good Video Meike. It's remarkable what she is doing at only 18 years old both on and off the court. From the many, many reports and videos I've seen about her, what really stands out for me is her mental fortitude. Her parents have had a lot to do with that. She has a wonderful mind. A very special mentality. That's why I think she will be fine. She will handle any losses and come back stronger. The next month or so without a coach could be tricky but she has other good people around her, helping her. When she appoints a new coach and has a strong pre-season's training she will be even better.

A very logical analysis of Emma's game. Now that we know she is competing at Indian Wells (& with her US Open Title) every oponent will be gunning for her & we'll get a better idea of her capabilities. Her performance at the US Open was truly spectacular & I doubt if she can repeat playing at that amazingly high level on a consistent basis. Thank you for mentioning the Mardy Fish program on Netflix, which I watched & throughly enjoyed. I will be following your KZbin Programs from now on.

Thank you! We will see what happens. Whatever does happen, I hope that the vast majority of people will realize that these athletes are humans and very young ones at that. And I think the Mardy Fish docu absolutely helps with that. Even Fed said the other day that he wouldn't have known how to deal with social media when he started. It was there, of course, but not as crazy as it is now.

My worry for Emma is that she has essentially skipped a whole section of her development. The gradual climb up the rankings, learning to lose against top players, developing her game and then learning to win against those players. I think she still needs to go through that process but now she has to do it under the scrutiny of being a superstar. It provides a different kind of pressure. What if she goes out in the first round of her next 3 tournaments? What if she gets nuked 6-1 6-0 when she next plays a top 5 player? She will need to deal with those situations and maintain her confidence and belief in herself. The media will not help her in this. Following the US Open we still have the cries of "she's a one tournament wonder", "she didn't play anyone good", etc. She really can only put that to bed when she next wins a high class tournament (not necessarily a major). Fortunately she has already shown that resilience by almost immediately dismissing the "she can't handle the pressure" tag she gained from some after Wimbledon. I do think she has what it takes. There is likely to be a lull for a year or two and the inevitable ups and downs but I still tip her to be a multi Major winner barring injuries. I also have no concerns about the distractions of fame and money. She seems very grounded and her parents simply won't let her! What I can say for sure is that I love watching her play and can't wait to see where she goes in the future whatever happens.

Her biggest strength is not having a major flaw in her game. There is nothing for the opponent to look at and say, as we do in tennis typically, things like "If you go after the Second Serve / FH / BH etc etc... it will break down" Yes there's nothing to exploit. Brilliant technique combined with athleticism and mental toughness will take her long way. Threat? Exposure, media, endorsements and hangers on

Hi Meike, my 2 cents observation of Emma Raducanu is that I feel Emma needs to get the feel of all her torments she plays at is play Qualifying rounds, not get a wild card, but play the Qualifying rounds so as to get a feel of whatever tournament she is playing, I picked up on something she said herself.

Great analyses. I think her strength is her ability to return those powerful shots at extreme angle. Her forehand and backhand shots are strong. She consistently hit those shots near the line which makes it hard for the opponents to return and she returns it quickly like a ping pong technique giving the opponent little chance to recover. Although I don't watch much of tennis these days, I did dig up and watch some of the Osaka and other greats highlights and notice they don't necessary hit hard like Emma, not consistently or near the line. And I am thinking Emma is going to kill them if they're going to return those weak shots giving her plenty of time. I don't see weakness in her game as well. If anything, she just need to increase muscle strength and stamina. She's only 18 but if she can increase muscle strength, that'll help with chasing down those hard to get to shots or help with increase her serving speed. I notice Osaka and Williams have powerful (consistently over 100mph) serves and that seems to help them a lot. If Emma can increase the speed of her serve, it'll make her life even easier. That will start with increasing strength. As far as media, I don't think it will affect her as much because I think she's grounded and she have the support system. And her personality and outlook are just different. She enjoy the experience rather than focus on...oh what happened if I lose. When you enjoy doing something in life, it's a recipe for success EVEN if you lose. I think that's why she want a coach with experience so she want to learn things ahead of time and not to be caught by surprises.

Hi Meike , Great insight, 3 months earlier maybe Emma was on the verge to success also at Wimbledon ? But unfortunately the breathing problems halterd her progress , maybe she would have won Wimbledon? Who knows. From reading what she's said , this progress began whilst in Lockdown- her mental strength plus her tennis excelled too winning her first major prize of $25,000 .. Everything clicked into place at the right time , her mentor's around her including Tim henman I believe as been a great help too. As you have mentioned, nobody knows how Emma will develop from now, but it's extremely exciting to see what arises in the months, years ahead. Wildcard for Indian wells, maybe she will be tempted by this? - Ashley Bartly as already pulled out. I believe Emma will enter Indian wells 😀.... Excited now to follow Emma's journey , as I'm sure millions of us are. She's certainly brought in a whole new breath of fresh air to the Tennis circuit, and beyond!

very insightful and accurate. However I do not believe you mentioned Emma's inner belief system. I'll always remember being in a café in Shanghai. A toddler was at next table. Her father for whatever reason gave her a hard slap on her bare thigh. I expected tears etc but the little girl just looked at him as if to say "whatever I did, I didn't deserve that ". I really did wonder what kind of country I was in? Emma mentioned her inner belief system; it is hard to describe but it is as if the Chinese know they are the future and there is a confidence and values that is part of their mindset and Emma possesses that. Of course there will probably be ups and downs but with her mother and her heritage she'll overcome them. As an old man I just thank her for the happiness she has brought me!!

Yes, I thought so too. She looked apprehensive. The last three weeks were a whirlwind and I think she's just trying to process it. I think it started to dawn on her - that while very exciting and new - her old live is gone. Before nobody cared when she got on court somewhere, now she needs a body guards and people are screaming to get her autograph. Before she was scheduled on outside courts, now she's the main attraction in the night session. How do you love up to this when you've never even played a full year on tour. It's gonna happen a few more times I think. I also think that it's going to be really important to have a good coach who can now talk her through this. I don't think Jeremy Bates is the guy for that, to be honest.

The fact the coach in just ahort term catapulted her into a grand slam champion should be the reason to keep him full time. The coach admits he doesnt have experience BUT that can be a huge plus as he is fresh and determined to give it everything. Maybe its personal reasons such as he doesnt want to travel away from family which as a coach i could totally understand

From what I understand, it was a temporary agreement to just do the tournament before the Open and then NY. Being a full time coach is VERY demanding and yes, you're on the road for 40-45 weeks of the year. Definitely not easy (or impossible!) to balance with family life.

Interesting and thoughtful comments....but you say that she hasn't experienced hostile crowds.....but the crowd in New York were overwhelmingly against her.....most, although not all, made it quite clear they wanted Leylah Fernandez to win, and it got more and more so as the match progressed, and at the end even her first serve faults were being clapped which I have hardly ever heard. Surprising as Fernandez isn't even an American. Emma clearly noticed this... look at her particular reaction immediately after she won the first set....she certainly did notice the overwhelming support of the crowd for her opponent and how little comparative support she was getting. This didn't undermine her resolve....in fact it appears to have added to her determination rather than undermining her....so I think hostile crowds in a match are not going to be a problem for her in the future. Incidentally a small thing but WTA World rankings don't give bonus points now for defeating higher ranked players, although of course they did in the past.

Ooopsies, I guess the WTA didn't call me to tell me they stopped the bonus points :-) I agree the crowd probably wanted Leylah a bit more. Still a fairly nice crowd in that there wasn't any heckling or deliberate attempts to distract like some people not stopping to clap a day later when Medvedev served for the match.

You could be right about the pit falls but she seems to have so much going for her:- She currently has multi-million $ contracts with: Nike, Wilson and Tiffany, she's also now managed by IMG, the firm that manages: The Williams sisters, Sharapova, Djokovic etc. Her ambitions ,tennis wise, are to be a top 10 player and win grand slams. She's a very bright girl she did her A-Levels in the summer getting A's in Mathematics and Economics. When tennis is over she's said she may finish her education with an economics degree and go into the world of finance like her parents. She want's her legacy to be that you can stay in school and still achieve in sports and education if you work hard at both. Given all this I'd be surprised if a girl that intelligent with that tennis talent and mind set didn't win more slams.

As a non tennis person it looks to me if Emma can relax & get into the zone she can beat anyone or will be incredibly difficult to beat. Emma has turned me onto Tennis. I thought Emma might have used a drop shot at times but she didn't. But I saw her practising drop shots at Well. Seems to me Emma needs a few months of practise playing & circuit playing. I will follow Emma now. Emma is not at the Federar level yet--since Emma I've been watchimg the best shots of Federar--but give her time & practice she will improve. A separate point, since Quitting the EU after 2016 my Chinese Artist friend now partner has taken a lot of insults and some threats though no attacks, Thank God, here in Holborn, London. She cared for an older very ill very mad older man over 13 years 24/7 in his flat and has suffered from that. (Still visits him in his Care Home 3/4 times a week & phones as he phones her.). She gets very upset and frightened even at hard looks she gets since 2016, so I'm hoping the phenomena of Emma Raducano will soften & relieve all such reactions. For Rumanians as well.

Don’t expect anything from her. What she did at the US Open is going from walking up Snowdon to climbing Everest. Now she has to learn how to navigate the WTA tour. The US Open hard courts played to her strengths. Now she has to go to places and conditions which don’t suit her game, and all she can do is learn to adapt to it to make her game even better. Her ranking will go back down before rising back up again.

This is an extremely interesting video, not only on Radacanu herself, but as an insight into the overall situation - the 'insider stuff' mentioned. Radacanu already came in for a lot of stick when she had a medical issue at Wimbledon from some of the talking heads of the British media - ludicrous nonentities like Clarkson and Morgan who can't do anything except sound off about things they know nothing about, and who were quick to backtrack and even try to take the credit for her comeback! (The only good thing Clarkson ever did was punch Pierce Morgan, and Radacanu can probably already drive better than him now she's passed her driving test.) But - to misquote Val Kilmer in Tombstone - she had a finger for each of them! And I wonder if her change of coach would even have been noticed, let alone criticised, if she'd been a man. Anyway, this sort of systematic video is a change from the mumbling nonsense you often get on KZbin, and about the only one that Radacanu might actually benefit from watching herself. Though I suppose her team are telling her much the same.

Thank you for your kind words. That's exactly what I'm hoping to do: bring another point of view so that people get a better feel for what a player's experience is. To be perfectly honest, I would not want to be in Emma's (or any top player's shoes these days) because there is so much noise around that really didn't exist when I played. I did see they hysteria around Steffi but that was really tame compared to what athletes have to deal with these days. And I agree with you on the coach change 100%. I'm ready to just enjoy more tennis from Emma regardless of result.

Excellent analysis. Something that concerns me, and I see some KZbin videos that portend this, is the pressure she will get to speak out on social and political issues, especially because she's a bi-racial immigrant. It ends up being a "damned if she does and damned if she doesn't" situation. It would be so nice if she could be just left alone to be an outstanding tennis player.

@@MeikeBabelTennis I am so disappointed that Emma Radacanu has had little to no success since the U.S. Open. Granted she's had some injuries, but why is she also changing coaches so often? I hope she ends up with a coach in the mold of Darren Cahill and Amelie Mauresmo, although being that well known or high profile isn't as big a necessity as much as having their approach to emphasizing the player's overall well being even before their progress in the sport. Last, I hope her and her team steer clear of celebrity coaches who have a stable of players that seem like they burn bright for a very few years with them and don't have the overall longevity in the sport that they should have had with more invested people around them.

Very very occasionally a sportsperson transcends their particular sport. I think that Emma is one of those people. Her beauty is incidental, there have been many great looking tennis players. It's the joy she emanates that attracts people most. It's contagious. When she smiles, she causes others to smile, and she smiles all the time. With all due respect to Andrew, he's a British based coach of juniors, and indeed was Emma's coach when she was 11. He wasn't her coach during her Wimbledon run, and was chosen for the American hard court run because he's easy going and was a know quantity. She's gives more credit to Will, her physio, for keeping her in shape during the longer than expected run. Andrew didn't "give" Emma her US Open, he was just lucky to be around as she gained much needed match experience, and improved with every match. Andrew is about as responsible for Emma's US Open win as Nixon was for the success of the Apollo missions.

@@guru6831 "Tennis demands loyalty, not cruelty. Emma will pay dearly for this." Tennis does not demand loyalty, people earn loyalty. Andrew has just been her coach for too short a period of time, and played too little a part in Emma's success to have earned loyalty. Emma gave Andrew the biggest success of his career, not the other way around. She's also given him the biggest payday of his career. If she hadn't had such an unprecedented run at the US Open she "may" have stayed with him longer, or she may returned to Nigel Sears. Emma's still got her mentor, her father, her inspiration, her mother, her management company, IMG, and her financial experts. She also has her work ethic, her love of practicing, her love of playing, her superior sporting intelligence, her youth and beauty. She's got nothing to lose, how on Earth will she pay dearly for dropping a temporary coach, for a full time coach with WTA experience? It's clear that for some reason you don't like Emma. You're continually posting a link to your video questioning whether Emma is a Champion or a Cheat? What happened? Did you lose a packet betting on Fernandez?
