What Causes Gout? Does meat cause gout? Does seafood cause gout?
A gout attack is one of the most painful things you can ever face. What if the majority of gout attacks were caused by what you eat and drink? Food and drink are the cause, but not the food and drink you might imagine.
A low-purine diet and pills are recommended to patients with gout, but there is a better way. Does eating more or fewer purines even really matter? It does, but in the opposite way you might think. If you know someone with gout they would be thankful for you sharing this video with them.

32 years old and experienced my first gout attack at 28. I’ve always been at a healthy weight but made a lot of bone headed decisions on my diet. Now at 32 I’ve switched to a carnivore diet and maybe a little keto here and there, but since the switch I haven’t had a single flare up in over a year. I’ve also cut out alcohol consumption to only special occasions, and found out that “sugar free” drinks are actually worse than normal sodas. Cut out alcohol, limit grains, hydrate, stay active, and avoid ALL processed foods/drinks. Cheers to all my fellow gout sufferers! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

I got it at 29 but didn't have my first full blown attack until a month before my 30th birthday. It was an entire month of torture as I tried to ride it out. Eventually I went to the hospital when it got to the point of insanity. Couldn't walk or even hold my foot out as gravity alone felt like an anvil. Quit drinking over 2 years ago but occasionally get flare ups to this day. In one right now. Was scared about trying carnivore because of what they say about red meat and gout, but thanks to this video, I'm going to try it out.

A couple things I have found that helps me with gout management besides allopurinol is taking a top quality turmeric supplement from garden of life which has some Black pepper in it to jack the obsorbsion by 1000x I dont know the how but the pepper helps the turmeric get into your system I take the turmeric right before going to bed and I will drink cranberry juice cherry juice and pomegranate juice or eat fresh cherries or pomegranate seeds every so often and to so how much this helps with gout I had a severe flair up of gout in my knees a couple years ago to where from my knees to 3/4ths of the way up my thighs was bright red like a sunburn and that area was so hot that it felt like I had charcoal on fire under the skin and I have a very high pain tolerance due to having osteoarthritis in both knees prior to the gout setting into both knees and a whole slue of issues which causes severe pain in my back and cause severe muscle spasms in my back and the flare up I referred to of gout I was in tears from the pain someone went and got the turmeric supplement pills for me and a small bottle of pomegranate juice within a matter of 30 minutes of taking the turmeric and drinking the pomegranate juice the gout flare up stopped and the burning and the bright red color in my knees and thighs we nt away so you might try this over the counter gout treatment dont get me wrong I'm not a medical professional by any means but I just know what worked to help my gout

Magaritas have high levels of high fructose corn syrup, it's the problem, not alcohol. Yes a lot of alcohol will affect gout, but high-fructose corn syrup is the deadly. I don't drink alcohol, but every time I go overboard with sugary shit and or ice cream I get an attack. The last one last week was my elbow, pain was from my head to my chest all over the body, and extremely painful elbow joint. \BTW I keep a diary every time I get an attack and every time it's the sugar consumption that is the commonality

I had bad out attacks for years, and the only thing that stopped them was cutting sugar and carbs. I also reduced alcohol consumption and rarely drink beer, generally sticking with a low-carb cocktail, vodka and water with lime. The last attack I had came after mowing through a large bag of trail mix over 2-3 days - tons of raisins and other dried fruits. Fructose overdose! The stuff about meat causing gout is clearly wrong, at least for me. My personal experience has convinced me the root cause is insulin resistance.

I can attest to this to a certain extent. My first gout flare up is @ age 30, back then I didn’t know it was gout already. My doctor told me to avoid purine (basically red meat) and put me into maintenance medication (allopurinol for the most part). I took medrol and Celebrex as well if I would have any flare ups.. At first I tried to stop my medication and didn’t eat any red meat, but still it didn’t do no good. Things change when I stop eating inflammatory process foods (sugar, vegetable oils, oats, pasta, flour)... I still eat fruits and honestly I’m not putting any much attention on what kind (wether high in fructose). Bottom line, it’s a whole food approach for me...now I don’t take any medication and enjoy eating pork, beef, fats... and no gout flare ups!

Dr. Berry speaks the amazing truth here on gout. I'm a proud Patreon supporter of Dr. Berry after his videos helped change my life. So take his advice if you or a loved one suffers from this excruciating pain. Now, indulge me as I add some details below. Gout literally started to rule and ruin my life in about 2015. Ankles (mostly) but big toe, middle toes, Achilles, tarsals, metatarsals and knee. Starting in roughly 2008 I started to get gout flares once in a while. The first time I thought I busted my foot somehow. Then with increasing regularity the gout flares would come one once a quarter, then once a month, then once a week. By the time I was 46 I had to make contingency plans for business or leisure trips around the inevitable gout flare. And let me tell you the pain is beyond description. No relief whatsoever. If you've read this far you know what I mean. My longtime family doc was empathetic but offered NSAIDs or Allopurinol. The idea of Allopurinol every day just didn't sit right with me. Why would I have to be tethered to a Rx for life when it's probably something I was eating?? So, of course, I did as my doc said: tried to eat less red meat and whole grains with more fruit. Instead of getting better it got worse. Moreover, that way of eating and thinking that a calorie was a calorie was a calorie led to exploding weight gain and by 2017 I was extremely obese. I knew several ppl who suffered from gout and all of us drank too much beer and were overweight. By how to lose weight? Dr. Berry was the first MD I saw on Twitter and KZbin that was a shining light in a dark abyss. Sure there were others that I still follow as part of my own "Twitter/thought leadership community" but Dr. Berry as an MD led credibility to the war against SAD (standard American diet). I started vigorously consuming his content. Dr. Berry's advice finally convinced me I had to give up beer - even lo-carb beer b/c he's right the best tasting beer in the world doesn't feel as good as no gout pain does. Because of Dr. Berry and others on KZbin sharing the gospel of a low inflammation diet I picked a date in Jan of 2018 to go all-in. The pain was too much and the thought of living with gout for the rest of my life was terrible. I had to experiment - as Dr. Berry says - as a "Citizen Scientist". The gout didn't go away over night once I went Paleo/locarb. Rather it was like a GPS locating ping. Whereas the ping intervals had been getting closer and closer for the proceeding 7 years (ping.....ping....ping....ping..ping..ping, ping PING)....it started reversing as if an onion of bad inflammation was being peeled away (ping, ping,..ping....ping.....ping.......ping...........ping...............ping). I can now gladly write that I haven't had a painful gout flare in well over a year. I can barely describe how great this is for me! It's feels like I reversed the age clock. I don't have nagging fear of the next flare up. What's more is that I eat red meat ALL THE FRICKIN TIME! Grass-fed, grass finished ground beef, ground goat, ribeyes, pastured bacon. Dr. Berry is so right on....I had to look at my gout as a result of a hyperinsulinaemic, high inflammation diet. It was an experiment to try in Jan of 2018...to vastly lower my insulin response with a changed diet while also avoid industrial seed oils. It worked beyond my best expectations. Down over 90 lbs. Blood lipid panels better. Lower blood pressure. Improved skin and energy levels. I could go on and on. I let decades go by knowing full well I was eating like crap and not taking care of myself. Ironically the insufferable pain of gout was what I needed for the kick in the pants to change something. I started listing to Dr. Berry out of the gate and still do every week to this day as this lifelong way of eating is what I want to do and Dr. Berry helps keep me on the cutting edge of lowcarb/Keto/Ketovore research. Thank you Dr. Berry!

Now I decided to try carnivore and 60 days in with no gout!!! I’m sure the oxalates were too high for me with just keto trying to push 7 cups of green vegetables 🥬 a day.

I had bad gout for around 8 years. It was diagnosed by a hospital ER doctor around winter 2006. I was 26 years old and weighed 490 pounds. He said my uric acid level in my urine was high. I do not remember the exact number but if for just a guess let's say normal level is 4.5 mine was 8. I had around 2-3 flare-ups a year for right at 8 years, and I had bladder infections a few times a year as well. I climbed as high as 515 pounds around 2013. I decided something had to change. I was 33 years old, married to a great woman, and had 3 wonderful kids 1 girl, 2 boys. I at the time was drinking a 24 pack of Mountain Dew cans every 2-3 days. I gave that up and switched to Pepsi and Diet Pepsi. I also cut my number of cans down to 2-3 a day mainly just when eating. I drank and still drink a lot of water throughout the day (evening since I've worked 2nd shift for the last 2 and a half years). I haven't had a gout flare-up in around 10 years. My guess would be the way over doing the high fructose corn syrup had to be the cause. Is that what was actually causing it? I don't know for sure, but it seems really odd if it's not what caused it. I give up the Dew, I didn't have the gout flare-ups. Will I start slamming Mountain Dews 8 or more a day to find out if it comes back? No I won't. I do not want to find out that bad. I am just very glad that it doesn't happen now. Will this work the same for someone else? I don't know but I can also say I've lost 130 pounds along with the gout. So I'd have to imagine it's worth a shot. I know for me it is. I'm now 42, down to 380 and losing, and that wonderful daughter has made me a super proud pap to an astonishingly amazing almost 2 year old reason life exists young man. I want to be around to see this boy grow up and I want him to be able to know his pap.

My first gout attack was 28 years ago so I have studied gout extensively to find relief. My MD was not successful keeping the attacks away. My study and self treatment had been more successful than the MD but over the years the attacks have become more severe and longer duration. My treatment has been exercise and natural items such as ACV, lemons, turmeric, tart cherries celery and such. Tried avoiding foods with high purines such as red meats, shellfish, mushrooms and many others listed as bad for gout. My latest venture has been Keto - it is almost like a miracle. The pain and swelling gone the first week. Have not given up beer - just limited it to 1 night per week - no ill affects. My BMI was 26.7 - now at 25.9 and still coming down. Blood pressure had been ~145/68 - now 121/63 so all is going in the right direction. I am not and have not been on any meds for over 10 years. Have been eating (and enjoying) those bad things such as red meat, pork and others listed as NO for gout. My assessment is: SUGAR was the bad guy. Get rid of the sugar and many issues will be corrected.

@Max -x I eat some tuna and other fish. Sardines and mackerel - NOPE. Just not for me. I do enjoy many other high purine foods - mushrooms, asparagus, bacon, pork, beef. I have had a few gout (scares) in the last year - gout almost always comes on during your sleeping hours. I've noticed over the years that I will wake up in the night and have a certain pain in a joint that will be gout. So each time I have the pain, I will take 4 - 500 mg Ibuprofen when I get up. If the pain persists, I will take 4 more before bedtime. Have not had to take more than twice for the pain to be GONE. This has put a damper on any gout flares so far. In the past, I would wait for the attack to provide the bad pain before attempting to medicate - TOO LATE! The attack would go to extreme before any relief was found. Overall I believe that Keto has been the biggest improvement - the early treatment with Ibuprofen a strong second. No full blown gout attack for 14 months now has been GREAT!

Had my first attack at 14, but never medicated, and haven't had an attack in years. Everyone seems to have different triggers (offal and shellfish are the bad ones for me - I'm English, so some traditional foods will be different, but I have always been fine with cheese, beer and red wine which can trigger attacks in other people). Always stay hydrated, and if you do drink alcohol, drink a pint of water when you get home, and again when you wake up. If you drink as much beer as an Englishman, down a pint of water before starting the next gallon :-) If you do feel an attack coming on, drink a pint of water. Drink coffee, and drink more water.

Colchicine fixed it. The next summer I endulged in garden tomatoes again and ate more steaks and crab legs and bam! My reflexologist commented on my lobster colored feet and said I had too much acid and to stop the tomatoes. I ditched the tomatoes, drank lots of water, and waited for it to pass. I agree with most all of his videos, but natural tart cherry juice with no added sugar absolutely helps gout, my Dad used to struggle with this, he started by drinking 8 oz a day for three days, then just 8 oz weekly, no more gout. All the other advice from Dr Ken Berry is great!

Hi Dr Berry I'm in the UK and I've been going through this Gout episode now for 5 months solid. It began in my ankle and had just started to ebb away when it reappeared in my big toe. For myself I drink alcohol only on occasion and while I may carry a few extra pounds I'm not too overweight. I'd say if anything white bread and sugar are my downfall even though I don't eat sugary foods every day....I realise it is in a lot of the foods we eat. My GP put the Gout down to my blood pressure tablets reacting to an antibiotic I was taking back in November '21. I'm unable to take anti-inflammatory drugs because of a kidney problem I have but I will look into the Keto diet because by hearing u and reading the prescious comments people have kindly left I'm feeling changes needs to be made if I'm to move forward and make Gout a thing of the past. Wish me luck and thank u so much 👍

Gout is something I wouldn't wish on a worst enemy. I followed all the advice and ate the "appropriate" gout diet but continued to have flair ups. Finally I found low carb and my last gout flair up was about 5 1/2 years ago. I now follow a carnivore eating plan and eat lots of red meat, shellfish, and organ meats. All three were a HUGE no-no due to purine levels. No more pain. No more flair ups. Excellent advice, Doc.

so low carb/sugar was the main key, right? Seems the kidneys have unequal habilities with the poisons we feed upon. Kidneys dont like wide pH swings, sugarb or uric acid (stones!) Holidays splurge are a prime example to OD on extreme foods: sweet and salty greasy food. Figure, just about everyone that comes back from a cruise... has food related illnesses. The smart holiday brake would be to diet and exercise the body, not to abuse sick food for 7 days !! 👍🏻

This is the best gout information I have seen. I am currently having a gout flair up, which I do about every 6 -12 months, I started carnivore mainly for fatigue and body aches, I mean at 60 I was like, you might as well dig a hole and bury me, I was truly worried my employees and family would notice, I mean it was getting worse quickly. So glad I discovered Dr. Berry, it coming up on my KZbin, and I kept ignoring it. One day I got desperate enough to watch it. Now, with this latest episode of gout, my mother in law, and wife are like now you can quit with the carnivore. Even though I got gout once again, I'll not quit carnivore. The benefits are numerous, but it hasn't helped my gout. Yet, I think it may still. I really have tried a lot of different dietary changes and I've always been mindful of my diet, I've never really found anything that made much difference, I don't use medications for anything except I use Colchicine for gout, but I am hopeful to leave that behind eventually.

Yep. I've had gout since I was 20. At 50, I was diagnosed with diabetes and had to change my diet. I got off the alcohol and followed a low carb to no carb diet... poof. No more gout. I'll also say, as far as pain is concerned: he said that he had patients say it was worse than giving childbirth. I've had it so bad, that it was absolutely the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life-- broken bones, pulled tendons, big injuries... all pale in comparison. I always describe it as taking a hot, jagged blade and jam it into your joint, then move it around constantly for about 3 days. While you're at it, shoot high voltage electricity into the joint. Yup, that's gout. Anyway, thanks for the info, Doc, and not the stupid bullshit that you see elsewhere online and in health food stores. Those home remedy/supplement voodoo doctors are the worst. I used to believe taking massive amounts of cherry juice would help you. It doesn't. Changing your diet and getting exercise, losing weight, cutting out carbs (especially the sodas, etc.) is what you need to do.

The thing with gout is that it makes you irrational. It was no big deal for me to literally go and buy a gallon of tart cherry juice and drink it all in like 2 hours, while chewing through 8 or 12 ibuprofen. It never worked, but gout is literally the most painful thing I have ever dealt with; you'll do ANYTHING to get rid of the pain, and it's a different type of pain that really can't be explained. I've literally wanted to chop my limbs off in the middle of the night because I was writhing in pain. Just imagine, a 6'7", 250lb man literally crying in agony and almost unable to breath! I can't tell you how many times I've had a Doc just look at me stupidly when I've told them of the things I've tried to do to lessen the pain. The only thing I've found that actually works (beyond some pretty gnarly prescriptions) is actually going low carb. Do I still have gout? Sure, I might have a day or two of "twinges", but I haven't had a full blown flare up that has lasted for a month of two in over 2 years. A day of mild uncomfortableness, and then I'm back to normal. That right there alone, is literally reason enough to never go back to my old eating habits!

Hi Dr. Berry, I have been binge watching your videos over the past week and learned so much. I developed gout in 2018 having my first attack in Dec of 2018. I couldnt for the life of me understand why I had gout and I was VEGAN! I was floored! The doctors had their theories but none of their suggestions panned out. A little more about my background, I have metabolic syndrome: pre- diabetic, high blood pressure, fatty liver, anemia, etc. All of this seems to developed over the last 4 years, not the anemia. (I've been dealing with that for 20 years.)My doctor has prescribed medicines for each one of these ailments: Metformin, Allopurinol, Losartan, Lasix, etc. So I am on a crap load of meds: I hate it! After listening to your videos and doing research on my own, I decided to try ketovore and since I've done that and it hasn't been that long, about 1 week and I've noticed so many changes in that short span of time. The inflamation in my body has decreased so much, I was pertrified that I'd have a gout attack from eating the meat but haven't had one tingle. Usually after I eat, I would start to feel tingling in my feet and lower part of my legs. NOTHING! I'm in awe. I'm still a bit guarded but the longer I go with this, the more I'm convinced this is working. I can't wait to see what my next bloodwork looks like. Thanks so much for all the information you have provided here. I'm so grateful. I'll keep you posted of my progress. My plan is to get off of all of these meds.

Same for me. First diagnosed with gout at age 24, now 57. Frequency, duration and severity of gout flares in various joints increased over the years. Allopurinol dosage increased from 100 to 300 to 600 mg/day with little to no effect. About 18 months ago I started the Keto diet for reasons having nothing to do with gout. Over the course of a couple months I lost 35 pounds (6 feet tall , went from 245 down to 210) and realized my gout just unexpectedly fixed itself and completely went away. I also quit taking allopurinol when I realized the gout attacks had gone away. It has been 18 months of bliss with no gout attacks. All my lab results and blood pressure are excellent. Keto diet was a very easy transition for me. The hardest part is it is sometimes really expensive and inconvenient to maintain when travelling and/or eating on the run. It is also sometimes hard to fly under the radar in mixed social gatherings serving food. There is always some overweight self-appointed nutrition expert that bird dogs the culinary choices on your plate and proceeds to publically out you and shame you in a microaggression by trying to make your diet a topic of public conversation. There is always at least one in every crowd. Even well meaning people will pepper you with questions that you would rather not talk about. The whole topic just seems to polarize and aggravate people. Attempting to explain your reasons and success just makes matters worse. Whatever you say is dismissed out of hand and goes in one ear and out other by the self-appointed nutrition experts that are invariably triggered by such things.

My gout has never been formally diagnosed. The first flareup was after a night of drinking more alcohol than normal. Random lady at work said "Your big toe huh? You have gout". The level of her confidence was insane. After about 10 years and periodic flareups, i have found two things. 1. I drink significantly more water than when I was younger. ANY hint of stiffness in bigtoe, knees, elbows, finger joints, I increase water intake substantially and immediately. With just that alone, I have not had a flare up in probably 5-6 years. 2. Baking Soda used on a VERY limited was a good treatment for the pain and to reduce a flare up from days or weeks into hours. Your mileage may vary, but I would strongly recommend MORE water.

Thank you. I have enormous trust in Dr. Berry. I have been following about a year. Grateful for his work. I am on week four carnivore and I am presently undergoing a three weeks of repeated gout attacks after many years of basic remission. As a result, I take from this video only the added questions I have deduced about how or why this is occurring? I suppose, given that I have a real basis for trusting Dr. Berry's conclusions , I'll press on. If he is correct through and through then my present dilemma has to eventually correct itself. Sooner, I would prefer, than later. If it does not resolve, then there is still yet a pervading the decided role of inflammation. Nothing motivates enquiry quite like severe pain but I'll stay committed for the time being. I'll edit this again in time to update in case anyone similar stumbles on it. Notably, in every other aspect of my health there is self-evident and unmistakable signs of a radical decrease in inflammation. Yet, when you hobble everywhere you have to go, and cringe all the time, such victories lose their shine.
