What’s it really like at LSU?
@PatrickCormier4 жыл бұрын
@@AwesomeTeddyz LSU was definitely the choice for me, but I know it is not for other people. I wanted to go to a big school, to have more fun in my undergrad, and to experience the hype of going to an SEC school. LSU has its dingier parts like the Art & Design Quad, but it also has beautiful parts like the normal quad, the Business Education Complex, and Patrick F Taylor Engineering Building. I think what sets LSU apart from other schools especially other schools in Louisiana is the community. Compared to other schools, LSU has SO much culture, SO much pride, and such a large amount of truly quality leadership organizations to become a part of. It is also a school rapidly expanding with 1000 more students in each fall freshman class, and each class is more and more diverse. Also if you are from Louisiana, you can get as much as $10000 every year in a Louisiana-based scholarship called TOPS. I love LSU with my whole heart I will admit that. I would concede that LSU does have a culture of being racist and the administration is not the fastest acting in that light. Classes can get really big, but honestly if the class is >100 I just don't go and all of them have been A's for me. I would say that LSU does not prioritize sustainable practices as we are one of few peer institutions that do not have solar energy on campus. I would say that LSU has entirely too much traffic (takes me 30 minutes to get home for what should be a 5 minute drive off-campus). I would say that there is a pretty bad campus safety problem with no clear solution. It costs $9000 to live in an on-campus apartment every year for the same price as my $4500/year apartment off-campus. Some people like this and some people don't but there's definitely a drinking culture, but if you don't want to drink its fine-I know a lot of people that don't drink. But to me, the benefits outweigh the costs. Of course there are always going to be bad things at every school that you go to, but it's about finding a place that you can grow into your fullest self. I'm not gonna tell you to come to LSU if you simply aren't meant to be here, but I would tell you to open your heart, step out of your comfort zone, and be open to the experiences that lay ahead in whatever institution you choose. Best of luck you guys in picking your next school ;)

I used to be a tour guide at Miami University (Ohio) and our tours were not scripted at all, and we were told specifically not to give facts and figures on our tours, but rather to be honest and to share our experiences on the campus. My boss often told us that we didn't get paid enough to lie and to be honest about what we liked and didn't like about the school, because the problems we had with the university itself were likely to be problems that are shared with many colleges and universities across the US, so why lie about them? I think this video is really interesting and opens an interesting dialogue about campus tours and it's interesting to see how every college does campus tours similarly and yet vastly different at the same time. Hopefully it sparks some interest and makes some changes, as a tour guide we often heard horror stories of other Ohio universities that had seven page long scripts to memorize to tour. Either way, honorable mention to the girl that yelled "LAUGH AT MY JOKES" because that was honestly what I wanted to say being a campus tour guide!

For anyone that’s currently college searching, the best question to ask a student at a school you’re looking at is what their least favorite thing about the school is. This can really give you insight into what the college is like and can help you narrow down your choices if what they say is a deal breaker for you.

I’m a tour guide at Colorado State and my thinking the entire tour is that its not me selling the school, it’s the school selling the school. It shouldn’t be up to me and how I portray the school, it should be what the school can and can’t offer and whether or not that lines up with the students values. Why would I lie to push a student to come to CSU when it’s not their place. Straight up I don’t want them to come here when it’s not, I want them to be happy. Too many tour guides think it’s a game of persuasion when it’s just informational. I always try my best to be genuine and give honest opinions regardless of what they might think of the answer

Me, a junior in high school not even knowing what schools my state has: 🌚
@dryfruit92724 жыл бұрын
You gotta get on that, fam. Ask your senior friends what schools they’re thinking about and what majors. Junior year is *the* year for college visits. I’m applying this year and the early Action deadline for many is November 1st. You *need* to go on college visits your junior year and rising senior summer. Good luck
@dryfruit92724 жыл бұрын
Michael Kun haha corona messed up everything, including my senior year. You could also visit colleges during winter break. Your school should give you a few excused absences for college visits but I wouldn’t recommend it if you have a large school workload. Try to plan on 3 day weekends, winter break, spring break.
@dryfruit92724 жыл бұрын
Michael Kun lemme just say, your ACT is amazing. You can get into an IVY league with your ACT score. Don’t downplay yourself in that aspect. I was in honors classes and I judged myself around those peers, but you need to realize that a 22 is the AVERAGE score for the ACT. Feel proud of yourself. Does your school have weighted gpa or just non-weighted? My gpa as well was lower than my ACT score 32, and I still got into a good state public school. You probably won’t have to worry about getting into that college, but make sure you apply to a safety school in case. Don’t forget to apply for honors too, they give out scholarships. Regarding your academic dishonesty, did the teacher/principal catch you? And is it on your transcript/personal records? Because if it is, then when applying, there’s generally a box that states, «have you pleaded guilty to crimes, misdemeanors » and another that says, « have you committed academic fraud. If so write 200 words about it ». If it’s on your transcript/record then you *must* write those 200 words about it. Maybe just say something like, « I was in a bad place, I was an idiot » and what you learned from that experience and that you *will never do it again*. If it’s not on the transcript then it never happened (you know what I’m getting at, right?). One of my friends has a 32 act and terrible, terrible gpa. His weighted was 3.2 when the top person in my class has a 5.1 Weighted gpa. He got into Tulane university. There’s a bit of leeway if you have a very high ACT score and a lower gpa (which you do). You should probably be okay. If you’re confused on where do you actually apply, your school will help you with that. We used the commonapp.
@dryfruit92724 жыл бұрын
Michael Kun also, make sure that when you do your written application or essay, you only get a few (1-2) people to change it, if at all. The colleges are looking for personality, not a machine. It needs to sound like you, not a teacher or parent. Maybe tell a story about your childhood, a funny work story, or do some creative writing. (Watch a few videos about what NOT to write about for the common app essay) Don’t write about mission trips and realizing that « we have it good » for example. It’s such an overused topic that they will deny you if you do that.
@dryfruit92724 жыл бұрын
Michael Kun thanks, man. I know you’ll do okay. If you have any more questions about the application process in the next year feel free to ask me again if you remember. (You can probably put this video onto “watch later” so you can find me again.) I do have to say though, engineering is one of the most difficult majors (one of my sophomore friends in college is in that course). You have to take Calc 2 for engineering and she was in a class of 500 people and at the end of the year there was less than 100 in it. Once you get past calc 2, a weed out class, you should do fine in engineering. It’s definitely good to be truthful. That would make you seem like a good person while they’re reading it.

When I went to tour a campus in my state I remembered that my good friend from high school went there. I hit him up and he went on the tour with me, he basically gave me his own personalized tour with his honest truths. “And this building is haunted. The college tour for the school I chose went like this: I was in a group with only female students-- beautiful blonde woman as a tour guide but no makeup and ponytail so she was relatable. Halfway through the tour, she runs into her (dreamy) boyfriend, who gives her a quick kiss and says hi to the tour group. As we walk through the gym, like clockwork, a shirtless sports team comes jogging through the halls... needless to say I looked right at my mom and said "I'm going here." I understand that this was all not likely planned, but my god, everything fell into place that day. I went to that school and ended up being a tour guide myself lol

For example, I would tell prospective applicants that we had an "Olympic-sized swimming pool" when, no, apparently it is NCAA collegiate. I did think GW did a good job with making use of the city (three of my profs assigned me projects at the Smithsonian). Also, I was a troubled kid, and GW (CCAS) managed to get me through in four years, so bravo to them. If you want a history of how dishonest/dishonorable GW admin has been in the past, I could probably give you links. But regardless, I hope you make lifelong friendships and have a college experience that is engaging/enlightening/empowering. You have a fan. :)

No matter how or what you talk about with the introduction process the bottom line is a Collage runs in a similar way to a state government and in some ways a business. They need to keep their staff, overseers, and reputation on happy, this means they need the income to keep their staff happy and their programs going. As is often the case many if not most schools are more caught up in their ever expanding mission creep than anything else, therefore it's unlikely that almost anyone could change something that reduces one of these areas particularly income because it crosses all three.

I don’t even go there but I live in the city and my mom teaches there and it’s known that they don’t give u enough $, and all the food around is expensive (even the grocery store- why is the closest one a Whole Foods?!) and many dorms don’t have kitchen facilities. There’s literally a food pantry for this expensive ass school.

Like I get what you’re saying, but this is kinda like saying at&t commercials need to talk about the areas that aren’t covered. They’re trying to sell their product. For an honest opinion someone just needs to talk to a student I think

i wish i could tell college me how short and unreal this part of life was. Never again will I be free at 2pm between classes with no true responsibility surrounded by tons of people my age with virtually no one or thing telling me what to do. College is so unlike true adult life it's absurd.

For six grade orientation when I was a tour guide I gave the kids a little piece of paper telling them truth and it was typed so I couldn’t get in trouble (they never asked my name)

It's like they want them to be honest but not talk shit because they are trying to get incoming freshmen. I only toured two schools and at the time, I felt overwhelmed because I didn't know what to ask and my mom was like dO yOu hAvE aNy qUeStIons and I'm like idk wtf to say but yeah

I know I’m a bit young to be going on college tours but I’ve literally known what I’ve wanted to do with my life since 6th grade.

everyone thinks they do subconsciously. challenge your own perception and realise your wants do change and adapt, and that life doesn't always go your way even if you think you'll know where you'll end up
