What COPS should look for in a knife - feat. Spyderco Tenacious and Spyderco OpFocus

In this video I offer suggestions on what to look for in a duty knife, the importance of a quality manufacturer, and the OpFocus program from Spyderco. I also cover my Spyderco Tenacious in detail. The "tactical" market is over saturated and it can prove difficult to research a solid knife for patrol purposes without being bombarded with shady companies producing low quality tools.
I carried the Spyderco Tenacious G-10 for nearly ten years without a hiccup. It is a solid knife that has been brutalized and keeps on ticking.
My goal is to assist someone in researching the Tenacious and to give some small guidance to those of you looking to purchase/replace your duty knife. There are many details left out and plenty of room for comparison to hundreds of other knives, but just like firearms: it is not one size fits all.

Always look forward to your videos! I go to the academy in 2 weeks so I can't carry a knife for 6 months :( and i'll have to try SpyderCo. Right now its CRKT for me.

Publius2k4 Productions eh yeah. It’s more about abiding by policies then the actual knife. Same way with we’re not allowed to wear sunglasses or chew gum. If you can’t adhere to simple policies in the academy then how can they trust you to follow the ones out on the road when you’re by yourself. Integrity testing basically.

I prefer the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 folder Knife. I like the locking mechanism & the rough texture G10 scales.

That is a wildly popular knife, and for good reason! I like promoting the tenacious because you can find it at significant price discounts and you get a really great knife in return. The Para2 is sweet, though :)

My same 5.11 knife is currently the house packaging opener. We’ve had screws replaced in each of our Spyderco’s as well.... but never had an issue beyond that. Holds a good edge, no slop in the mechanical portions and a superb hand feel. We used to be CRKT folks... but we’ll never go back!

It's hard to pick one company. Even some of 5.11's higher end knives are worthy, but if I spend good money it's going to be on a Microtech or Spyderco. Totally personal choice, but knives are like guns - go with what you love.

Six60Four Oh the gun/knife thing...no kidding there! We had a husband & wife battle for YEARS on the gun brand front. Then caliber to top it off. It became the family joke. Bottom line for me on knives is: A) Does the blade hold an edge? B) Being female, I have smaller hands and therefore fitment is sometimes a challenge-but ultra important! C) Ease of opening with one hand (unfortunately Colorado law states we cannot have “assisted” knives) D) Last but not least-weight. Been loving these product reviews/opinions. Keep up the good work and we’re looking forward to seeing your next video!

First off, Thank You For Your Service! Good video man, lots of good information here. I love the products offered by Spyderco. They are the only knives that I purchase, and even further, thus far, I have only purchased knives from their Value Line. The Value Line offers the perfect combination of Price and Quality all while being backed by their guarantee. Honestly, I dont find that the OpFocus Program works well. The verification process takes no time at all, which is nice. I was verified in a matter of minutes even while completing the verification over the weekend. But because the percentage offered is off their MSRP, which I mean lets face it, no one pays MSRP for anything, and the fact that they charge $13 for shipping, the discount received is not as low as simply purchasing the knife from authorized dealers. Let me follow this up with examples of the knives that I have actually purchased : Spyderco Efficient - $48(Spyderco) $42(Authorized Dealer) Spyderco Alcyone - $64(Spyderco) $61(Authorized Dealer) Spydero Tenacious - $53(Spyderco) $48(Authorized Dealer). You can see that each time the Spyderco program is more money, albeit only by a few dollars, but I’d like to see the program revamped a bit so that the final price would be less than one would pay at an authorized dealer. That being said, I love their products and I certainly applaud their efforts. Their efforts, whether it works for you or not, is still better than what you find at a vast majority of companies out there who dont provide any discount to Law Enforcement/First Responders/Military.

Jason Riccoboni Yeah, it can def be hit or miss. I don’t know if they adjust the level of discounts, but I have found the savings to be back and forth. I have grabbed some great deals on there and seen some they were meh... Thanks for the feedback on the video!

I’ve thought about it for about a month, and I just ordered one through their website. They have a program similar to spyderco’s Op Focus. Most retailers charge around $180 for it, but directly from Gerber’s “Service Program” it’s $116. We will see how it goes.

I say no. I like the emotional feeling of a USA made product, but I have to say on these everything feels the same.
