that might be the anime's fault because thriller bark was actually a pretty short arc in the manga, lasting 48 chapters. for reference, 12 episodes anime seasons often adapt around 50 chapters of its manga. but toei made a 45 EPISODES arc, making it 4 times slower its also worth mentioning that obviously slow pacing is a common one piece problem nowadays, but thriller bark was the first arc to be adapted far slower than its original version :)

I believe the anime adaptation didnt do a good portrayal of thriller bark, being the first arc they actually adapted with slow pacing. Basically 1 chapter (manga) per 1 episode (anime), so that made things pretty slow (the usual one piece arcs were at the moment 2 chapters per episode, and most anime do 3-4 ch. per ep.). I think in the manga the arc is pretty solid, with the battle of the straw hat pirates against gecko moria flowing really well.

I think what makes Sanji's perv moment so disappointing is that, aside from being creepy, it's also totally out of character in the context of everything beforehand. He was, arguably, more of a gentleman and romantic; he had some level of restraint for his desires. This took his character in a different direction and, while it may have been fine as a one-off joke, set a precedent for the rest of his screentime until WCI.

This is a really solid video, mostly reflecting my thoughts on this arc. (huge rambling session incoming) I wanna focus on one thing that I really agree with: the fact that Brook's character has had almost no role 90 percent of the time and has no real path forward is such a shame to me. On my first watch through of this series, I instantly fell in love with his character concept and back story, and I really think if the proper care was given he could still be a great character today. Like, think about this. He occupies such a unique spot in the story being a character that would have witnessed what is basically an entirely different world than the current one because of his age. My thinking was that hey, he's going to have some sort of wisdom on certain topics that nobody else on the crew will, or he will witness something personal to him in the world that has drastically changed and he will go through some kind of character conflict to as a result of it. But no, it really is just as sad as you mentioned, he says copy and pasted skeleton jokes and we don't even see reactions or acknowledgement of them, like, you could redraw the panels that he's in with him gone and nothing would be lost. In complete fairness, it is unlikely for even the "main" Straw Hats to have fullfilling roles and growth in the current story, but Brook barely even got any to begin with. I don't know, it's just really sad that a guy who's backstory had him drifting alone for half a century is immediately back in a position where he's barely even acknowledged, and with such an interesting set up it's just so disappointing that something of value really never came out of him and likely never will because of all of the characters competing for panel space now.

I love Thriller Bark because it's like a breather after Ennies Lobby where we have experienced emotional rollercoaster. Though I'm a bit disappointed when Brook didn't get to win in fighting Ryuma, I kinda understand it after knowing/watching Wano arc. I kinda like how Oda potrayed Moria here, his moves and power are great, his power is shadow. He controlled it however he wants. It also shows how tricky he was considering he's one of the warlords. The only thing I hate in Thriller Bark is Absolom, I'm okay with Sanji's pervertiveness but Absolom is way creepy than a funny gag. Sanji's reasoning about wanting to have invinsibility is somewhat relatable and also a common reason in anime, I found it so funny on how he's so angry with Absolom. And lastly, the teamwork, trust and care of everyone, even Sanji and Zoro towards each other. They willing to sacrifice themselves not just for Luffy but for their crew.

It would’ve been smarter to make Moria super depressed like he’s not funny or happy at all. Instead he is angry at the world and upset with the fact that the New World crushed him. When hearing that the Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates he becomes irate and wants to teach him that the he’s not ready for the New World. Doubling down on this would show with Bartholomew Kuma. Then it would also make sense for him to surrender when the straw hats threaten to kill his comrades which show his heart. We already have Enel for the sake of evil to be evil. Moria having a little more depth would be refreshing for the arc.

Moria is a good character, but I cant consider him as an antagonist. He didnt establish any conflict for main characters or story, because even at the current moment he is kinda right: he never left his dream or got scared, he was beaten, but he just changed approach. The fact that losing whole crew will somehow affect captain in negative way is obvious and correct, and Luffy will never get in this situation, therefore he cant give a counterargument(yes, he lost Ace, but still had his team alive). Brook was in this situation, but there is no direct or even indirect moment, where Brook acts different from Moria. Moria is just an experienced pirate that is lazy, which is not even that terrible if you can make your shadow do job for you. Its not like Crocodile supressed his dream after defeat and Luffy/Buggy did not. Moria becomes relevant when you have Barto, Kid and Law, who lost their teams in a chase for their goals/by circumstances. And now there is the question of how far can each of them go and what price they are ready to pay, because chasing One Piece and swimming in New World means keeping themselves and their teams in danger.

Also, I've seen both genders openly admit that theyd wanna just try to feel what itd be like to have the other genders parts. Be real, even if you wont admit it, nearly everyone would cop a feel for Punk Hazard. And Dressrosa... I won't spoil, so I understand early Dressrosa Sanji. Violet is a baddie.

As much as I love Thriller Bark, I think Punk Hazard is literally just a better version of it. Thiller Bark is kinda like a horror comedy, where Punk Hazard is just full on scary. I kinda disagree, i feel like it's important Zoro met his match with Ryuma instead of Brook, it solidifies his place as THE swordsman, even if another person with a sword joins the crew, demonstrates the differences between the two of them, showing that while Zoro is still the strongest, Brook has his own bag of tricks that being a skeleton brings. It also leans very well into the overarching story with Sabaody and into the time-skip that the straw hats were REALLY pushing the limits of what they were capable of. It took EVERYONE going all out to get through Thriller Bark, and even then, Luffy needed to get juiced up on shadows in order to really finish it off, which made it so much more impactful that even though everyone was at there limit, Zoro included, he still stepped up to face Kuma and take Luffy's pain

It’s only really called one of the worst arcs online because the fan base is increasingly filled with younger western audiences who are emotionally stunted and intellectually reductive towards anything awkwardly sexual. It’s an homage to horror and perverts creeping voyeuristically has been a common feature of the genre forever.

It was more gimmicky due to the gags and jokes probably what made people think this arc really isnt all that important. Plus the pacing of this arc as well it makes sense why most people dont like it. But the worst arc? Hell nah im probably in the minority that genuinely loved this arc

I mean... I think you missed some Brook plot (?) He was trapped in Thriller Bark because Moriah stole his shadow, that is his whole thing and he tried to defeat Ryuma many times but he could't do it, so Zoro helped him out. Besides I don't think Brook needed that fight to shine as character, his big moment is when the fight is over and he makes the decision to go see Laboon with the crew.
