I claim the cash-back rewards once they get to $50 or $100. Get a CC that doesn't charge annual fees. Pay for your CC bills every month to avoid interest charges and reap free money.

How do you calculate wether the benefits if cards with annual fees are worth it for your particular budget/salary/lifestyle?
@TamagoHead

I have 10+ cards. No annual fee. I only carry 6 due to the different points & my wallet size. My Costco & Amazon require membership, so I guess that’s a fee (well worth though). I zero the balances to avoid interest. & don’t carry a debit card. Frank Abignail (of catch me if you can movie game) did a TED talk similar to Vivian’s piggybacking your kids on your credit, & he advises against debit cards. In the event of fraud, YOUR debit card assets may be lost forever or tied up. With credit cards, it’s THEIR money & they have dedicated fraud departments.

Cost benefit analysis! I look at how much I spend a year and what that would translate into point, if I would spend those kinds of points (so usually for brands I actually regularly use even without the points), and if that value is more than the annual fee
@crazy4beatles

@@scottb_02so you pay $395 to get $300 worth of travel. I get there’s other benefits but if you didn’t have that annual fee, you’d have $395 in your pocket and could use $300 of that to use for travel. I don’t see travel credits as “paying” for the annual fee, because at the end of the day it’s money out of your pocket. Now if all totaled you would have say spend $900, $300 in travel, $300 in Uber rides, $300 in airport meals/lounge access, then sure. You’re getting $505 worth of rewards for free. But ONLY if you would have otherwise spent money on that 😅

easy way to work into it is get a secured card, raise the limit, use it properly, and wait. wait some years for all those old accounts to fade away. They'll made the secured card into a credit card in 6-8 months and just hold it for the longevity more than the perks. Took me several years to get rid of some account that said I owed them but they couldn't prove it, and they somehow reinstated the collections. Finally got rid of it showing the original supposed charge was 9-10 yrs old. Most States have a 6yr statute now.

Hotel worker here: a job hack I use when deciding rooms for incoming guests is if they have a metal credit card, I quietly move them to a higher floor. I do this because our higher floors are generally quieter and since they have a metal cc, I know they aren't likely to cause issues in the room...but if they do, they can cover it.😅

@DontTakeItPersonall
@DontTakeItPersonall Жыл бұрын
I'm an ex-credit card customer service rep, I would suggest paying off the cards you don't want to use, BUT DO NOT close the card. If you have the option to FREEZE/LOCK your card via your account, do so. What will happen is your score will go up because you will have REDUCED your income to debt ratio, because you will be UNDER to 30% usage of your COMBINED credit lines. Don't apply for any cards. However, do OPEN a savings account thru Amex, & deposit a small amount on a biweekly basis. After which, you may be able to be "granted" an opportunity to apply for an Amex card. HTH!
@Gemini302001
@Gemini302001 Жыл бұрын
In my personal experience if you don’t use the card after a certain amount of time the account becomes idle and the companies will close it on their own. Your credit score won’t decline because they are closing the account.

Tell me about it. I got out of credit debt changed my habits and I default to always using my own money. I use my cards seldomly, only enough to keep open but always pay off before interest can accrue. I say, if I can’t pay it off by two paychecks I have no business buying. Then, one of my longest credit cards reduced my limit by $5000. At first I freaked out because we were conditioned to care about credit and I totally disregarded the fact that I am more responsible and better prepared. Now I’m reconditioned to be like, so what they dropped my available credit…it’s nicer having a zero balance and not needing them. It’s such a mind trip. When you’re financially dependent they keep you trapped. Cash is king!

Amex Platinum is $695 per year. Chase Sapphire Reserve is $550 per year… how are they the same fee, when the difference is $145?!
