Pathfinder 1e is my all time favourite system. A few things to bring up from the video: In pathfinder, weapon groups are more unified. Swords crit more (19-20 crit range on most). Axes and maces do more crit damage (X3 on most). Then you have outliers. Some swords have an 18-20 crit range (rapier being one) and some weapons have a much higher crit damage at x4 (war pick, scythe, etc). And then there's the whole "exotic" weapon groupings that say "hey, I like where you started, let's add something special to it". That's where you get special traits to a weapon but they require special training and likely a feat. Armour. Having a "dwarven" crafted weapon doesnt really change much except for flavour. What does change it is what material it is made out of. Certain ones will give you resistances, damage reduction, lower the armour check (the amount reduced from a physical skill like stealth or climbing), and a myriad of other things. Just my two cents. Really enjoyed the video

Pathfinder 1st/2nd Goblins lore for those interested: So goblins are these condensed power-kegs of chaos and evil. They love setting fire to things, hate words (literacy is a good way to be set on fire by your own tribe) and hate dogs (hence their favoured sword: Dogslicer). They also have a longer version of this called a Horsechopper, which does what it says on the tin. They live for fun, which tends to be rooted in their senseless violence. However, they have been known to get up to other senseless games like doing rodeo on a piglet, consume slugs to prove they can keep them down or just trying to steal fireworks (see: We Be Goblins pregen, highly recommend!). However, how they became a core race in Pathfinder 2nd is a stranger tale. Despite their animosity with humans due to things like the Goblinblood Wars, a nation called Lastwall recruited a few of the more sane ones. However, Lastwall got bombed thanks to the rise of a lich called Tar-Baphon, and in the carnage the leader of the Lastwall Knights only escaped due to a small group of goblins. They travelled back to the main city in the Inner Sea: Absalom, a huge megapolitan city that accepts all walks of life as long as they follow the law. However, goblins with their Goblinblood Wars and chaotic evil reputation tended to be shot on sight. However, what with saving the head knight of the paladin order that is Lastwall, attitudes changed and now goblins are welcome in the city as long as they don't cause trouble (even if their chaotic tendencies often lead to trouble accidentally). So they became core. ...Or Paizo made them core because they kind of became a hell of a mascot of the company thanks to things like the We Be Goblins series where you play some of the small bundles of insanity.

1. Opportunity Attacks from standing up? Yeah, I remember that from 3.5 E (what Pathfinder is based on). I think the reduction in penalties for being prone in 5E is because it became rather abused in most 3.5 games I played, and could easily lead to a failure spiral if you're fighting something that could just keep knocking you prone. And in 5E prone still gives you disadvantage on attacks and melee attacks against you gain advantage. So it's not nothing, especially if several things get to attack you before you can stand up. And it costs you half your movement to stand. So if used intelligently, knocking someone prone can still be quite impactful. 2. Magical Items were basically built into 4E level progression. If a character doesn't have X amount of magical items at Y power level, they are now definitely underpowered for the level. Initially this seemed fine, but it meant that magic items became sort of meaningless in 4E. You'd be tripping over them by level 10 and it cheapened the world. They weren't special, just something you were "owed" for gaining a level. I like that they are now quite uncommon in 5E -- that you shouldn't be able to just buy them by walking into magic-Walmart, and any one of them might require a significant quest if not a full fledged campaign to acquire. Unfortunately, some DMs can't help themselves and will toss out magic items like candy in the hopes of making players like them... or like the game. And it winds up just ruining things. Besides that, having magic items remain rare means there's less extraneous bullsh*t to keep track of, so it's easier to play your character and focus on the roleplaying. 3. Armor. Again, this is just how it used to be in 3.5E, you had just a boatload of armor stuff going on, there were special feats you'd need to take and all sorts of penalties and bonuses. I got tired of it. I think having the simplified armor of 5E is the way to go. Especially since 5E is based on the bounded accuracy design. Meaning that you never completely outgrow enemies, and you shouldn't have a totally zero percent chance of hitting something. I like this because it keeps things viable for a lot longer. I'm of the mind that an actual lion (for instance) should always be a threat, no matter what. It shouldn't become a creature you are completely immune to even if you eventually become skilled enough that it's not so scary to fight one by yourself. I actually think health should have been narrowed as well, so that the early level stuff might become less of a threat, but could still kill you if you are stupid or unlucky even at higher levels. For me, that makes for a more believable world. 4. And as for money, I actually am of the mind that I prefer it being relegated largely to roleplaying. I've played a number of different systems, and have concluded that "shopping" isn't particularly fun in an RPG. And games where it's implemented around having lots of gear to buy, gold just winds up being a delayed levelling up system and can unbalance a game just the same as over-leveling characters. But if you just scored an obscene amount of gold, that might well put a target on your head in a roleplay-focused game. Or put you in a position to challenge some barons, lords, or even the king. And I think D&D DMs need to be less reliant on modules to hold their hands and more willing to actually engage with the players at the table by having some actual custom stuff happen. If I wanted a rote experience, I could just play a video game. It's cool that you like Pathfinder. But I've gone the other way over the course of my time enjoying pencil & paper RPGs, and I started with the predecessor to Pathfinder, D&D 3.5E. I want the system to get out of the way as much as possible rather than confining play. 5E was a step in the right direction, though I think it could certainly go a bit further. *Dungeon World* is a pretty fantastic approach. And I really, really like the flexibility of *Fate Core* and *Fate Accelerated* for allowing just a ton more creativity. And when I do run a 5E game, I will certainly allow for bending the rules if it makes sense in-the-moment, in-the-world for things to happen differently than if we rigidly obeyed RAW. I think it's best to err on the side of the shared fiction than on the side of "The Rules". Just so long as you don't completely trash the challenge. Anyway, I'm fully in support of people trying out systems other than Dungeons and Dragons. There are some really great alternative systems out there which can open up your eyes to different ways of playing. I got a far better grasp of role playing when my friends and I played the early 2000s version of World of Darkness (not Vampire, though) and I realized D&D style combat was actually one of the least interesting ways to engage in the fictional world -- I brought that concept back to D&D when we got to playing it again. I also got to understand the importance of pacing a story, of putting character development (both player and critical NPCs) first rather than focusing on a series of combat encounters and dungeon traps. I've also learned that D&D (even the glorious 5E) doesn't do nontraditional settings very well. Other systems are better for modern stuff or futuristic or space stuff. Or horror. Or superheroes. I just think, the best advice any RPG player could be given is to try other systems. Even if just one or two others. Though, I still consider Pathfinder as just off-brand D&D and it's really difficult to think of it otherwise when I've seen how very different other game systems are, while Pathfinder hews superclose to a mix of 3.5E, 4E and a touch of 5E.

This is my opinion: Pathfinder has a system for everything, 5e COVERS EVERYTHING with one very open system. simplicity, makes the game more fluid, by killing metagaming in favor of a more relaxed experience, which focuses on fun then numbers. You do not let the numbers represent your character as much. Also, an open and simple system, allows more room for expansions and tailored game experince ( darker doungeon, grim hollow, kobold press... etc.). Speaking of Kobold Press check their weapons and armor flavouring system. With less involving mechanics, role play assumes a leading role. It becomes more about what you want to play, then what you want to build... If you want to implement something into your 5e campaign, you just do it. Do like to build your character, or to simply play you character? Overall is not so black and white, but that's what I feel are the terminator lines, between the two systems. This is my 2c opinion. Great job with this video, love it.

What you describe as getting better, is just numbers and stats... 5e is designed to make decisions and role play the main part of your character growing. Sometimes less is actually more. Why pathfinder 2e is getting more traction? Maybe its because the system has been simplified? Exemple: pathfinder has a section dedicated to mounting which is very detailed. In 5e it called acrobatic role... you just describe what your character is doing and the dm decides dc... then based on the results, the dm describes it. How is this metagaming? Pathfinder 1e is the definitive edition of "D&D" for me. Everything that they changed and adjusted from previous editions of D&D was for the better and honestly polished what wotc couldn't. If I could bring some things over from P1e, it would be Archtypes for classes,(Variety where it counts) Haunts (better traps) and the strict formulas for how creatures level up. HD, saves, BAB and skills etc. all had a couple ways of progressing and each creature type was married to that certain progression. Their "Features and Traits" In short for the people that know about LA (level adjustment) it was a much more refined and improved version of that. Aberrations | Animals | Constructs | Dragons | Fey | Humanoids | Magical Beasts | Monstrous Humanoids | Oozes | Outsiders | Plants | Undead | Vermin "Animal" monsters have decent HD (D8s), they have good Fort and Ref saves but poor will and their BAB was average. They had access to Acrobatics, Climb, Fly, Perception, Stealth, and Swim as their core skills and each animal could put points into. (A jaguar might take stealth and climb while a robin would take fly and perception) Why was this important? It gave me, as a DM, the bare skeleton to work from. If I wanted to create unique animals for a homebrew world, I know the base that would keep them aesthetically in line with the rest of the games' creatures as well as its balance. Humanoid monsters could also take class levels and because of their natural progression I could figure out their starting point and judge from there how and what to level them up with. It also means that if an ogre loses his club, (something set to his stat sheet in 5e) I still know what his attacks are going to be without making things up on the spot. (Unarmed strike, or even his back up weapon 3/4 BAB +str)

@miloinindo
@miloinindo 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexandriamason2355 nah, not true. There were mechanical flaws in 3.5 that Pathfinder addressed. Pathfinder is MUCH more balanced than 3.5 is. An easy example would be spell casters. At level 1, a wizard in 3.5 is basically useless. You get 2 weak casts and then you are down to being less useful than a kobold. For the first 4 levels, wizards just suck. Bad. Borderline useless. This all changes with level 5 and access to third level spells. Suddenly, you can fly, cast AOE's that deal massive damage, etc. As time goes on, the power gap between the pure casters and all other classes grows exponentially. At higher level, the rest of the party is just playing support for the only characters that matter: the casters. In pathfinder, they changed that. Want to have the highest damage output possible? Well, there's no clear cut winner there any more. You can do a rogue focused on sneak attacks. You can do a bow fighter and stack bonuses to damage. You can do a raging barbarian. They all are completely valid options and none is truly better than the other. The last damage based character I made was a strength based orc sorcerer that focused on developing his draconic bloodline and maxing out the dragon disciple prestige class, allowing him to get claw, claw, bite, tail, wing, wing with an extra hasted attack (bite). By the end, he had an unbuffed strength of 28 with 7 attacks, which equipment knocked up to 34. The actual damage output in a single turn was lower than the damage output I had achieved with a simpler elf bow fighter BUT he also had decent utility with spells. There's no "optimal" character. The disadvantage to pathfinder was also the complexity. If you are a new player, you'd get drowned in the rules. You could spend years getting accustomed to the system and mechanics to the point that you could actually make characters optimally. Until then, you may struggle to make a functional character on your own. An unoptimized character will simply be outshone by the stronger characters. An unoptimized fighter at level 15 will maybe kick out an average of about 20 damage in a turn, only to have an optimized raging barbarian come charging in and hit for 100 average damage. If you think the changes made were trivial, you don't really understand the mechanics that well. The core system was the same, true, but the actual mechanical changes were far from trivial.

In most of the games I've run or played in, building a base of operations or buying a ship tends to be the most common way to shed all that extra gold but yeah, I agree there should be some other fun things for characters who are more on the move or who don't really care about having a stronghold. Some games (like Star Wars Saga Edition) have some really in-depth systems for customizing specific items. Sure you can tweak the stats of a set of armor, but you can also integrate equipment into it (like a hidden dart launcher in the vambrace), adapt it for different climates (ventilated plate for hot climates or layered hide for the cold), or even turn it into a piece of functional art (like an embroidered gambeson coat.) Item customization can be just as much fun as building a stronghold! You were talking about armor from different races having different properties. The 2nd Edition Arms & Equipment guide started to move in this direction when they looked at elven chain mail and asked how the other races build their signature armor. I always wanted to see more of this. For example, gnome armor was leather with so many pockets and tool hangers that it counted as studded leather when fully stocked with a complete tinker's tool set. These are gnomes, though! What other clever little devices and gadgets could be hidden in the layers and folds of that armor? Weapons could go the same way. Sure gnomes have the gnomish war pick, but what about something like motor-driven chain blades or repeating crossbows? When you think abouit elves what do you think of; is it a suit of armor? Not me; I think of wielding an elegant sword or firing a bow with superhuman precision. We all know how elven chain works, but I want to hear about elven swords and bows! Another thing I was thinking of was the fact that the wizard class has extensive things money can go into. Aside from the cost of material components that all casting classes have, they have the cost of learning and researching new spells. The balance of having a potential limitless spell repertoire is that it takes gold to learn anything beyond what you gain each level. Why not give other classes opportunities to spend gold on their class abilities? A cleric of Oghma who donates a large sum to their temple may receive a number of one-time bonuses to intelligence-based rolls based on how much money they donated. A rogue could spend money to improve their connections for the next month through a series of bribes and kickbacks. A fighter could have their blades honed and armor fittings oiled to grant a temporary bonus to damage and reduction to armor check penalties until they've landed or received a set number of attacks. There are so many things like this that you could do for all the classes.

4:38 ahh... yes... Personally, I solve this issue by doing this: Wolves are hungry, so they dont really want to kill the entire party; they just want to like drag one or two people outta there and consume them. So they take down one person to prone, one minor wolf then goes around, entering and exiting the ranges of the party, hoping to trigger attacks of opportunities from everyone. Upon success, the party loses their reaction, which is the perfect time for another wolf to grapple the prone target and proceed to drag the person away from the group. All the wolves then focus on beating up that one party member to unconsciousness, getting advantage because of the member's proned condition. Due to being grappled, the party member will fid it difficult to run or move on its turn, which gives more time for the wolves to knock said party member unconscious; once unconscious, the wolves just carry that party member on their back and run away.. Bam! Wolf tactics xD 30:16 Hm... Good idea, how would do it personally in 5e is to make the weapons slightly different, likely with slightly different bonuses, but nothing as crazy as sayyy critting a lot more How I would go about it is this: Sayyy shortswords are weapons that have less of a disadvantage whenn squeezing through a space, Maybe something about how it only gets -1 instead of an outright disadvantage or something similar? Daggers gain a slight + bonus to attack against prone creatures that are in heavy armor? If not, perhaps a slight damage increase? Basically makes it such that the best way to handle armored opponents is to pin them in the ground and put a dagger through the chinks of their armor. 32:01 They arent excited about spending gold to purchase more elephants? I rest totally opposite of the thinking behind 5e. The more intricate the system is, the more variation you see in each character. Customization has always been an issue to me in 5e, and it stems from the simplicity in it's design. Mind you I know creativity makes for unique backstories and personalities, but I love Pathfinder's ability to let the mechanics reflect the uniqueness of the character. 5e isn't bad, in my opinion, but having started in Pathfinder I find the design excessively simple. Call it gatekeeping, but I like playing Pathfinder and knowing it took a certain degree of commitment and competence to learn the system and play, because I don't really get much enjoyment from "casual" gameplay.

Good for you, I share that sentiment, however I exclusively play 5e nowadays because I had to introduce all my friends to it, and they prefer the more casual play. I tried introducing pathfinder to them, but they didn't take, so after my old group fell out and my casual friends were all that was left, I had no choice to and had to stick to 5e since they prefer the more simple mechanics. Also, I wouldn't call it gatekeeping as long as you don't belittle those who prefer it more casually.

I agree somewhat with your statement. I haven't played a system other than D&D 5e (not because I don't try, but because there is no one that plays anything other than 5e, and no one is willing to try a new system) and after playing for a while, I find myself wishing that I could build something new and more interesting, without having to find and balance homebrew. As you said, I wish I could show my character personality through how I interact with the world via the game systems, rather than roleplay and acting (of which I'm rather bad at).

In a video on Dungeon Dudes they mentioned a magical shop that, if I remember, has EVERYTHING. I think the idea was to ALLOW PCs to buy ANYTHING they want. veteran of Pathfinder here, while i like 5e for the simplicity i also like "mathfinder" for the complexity. 1) on the topic of crits, the sneak attack dmg in path does not multiply, so you dont have to worry about that. and there are weapons that get down to 15-20 crit range, another thing is that the adds to dmg also multiply, so your +4 str would become +8 2) AC, or lack of in 5e, I am playing path right now with an AC tank, something you can not do in 5e, as a fighter if i was to take away all the magic pluses to AC,(which is only +4 right now) i would be rocking a 27 AC, something unheard of in 5E, and we just hit 7, it will only go up from there. 3) the books, all you need to play pathfinder is the corebook, it has all the rules, the magic items, and bestiary 1. everything else is just add-ons( and honestly some of the latter books i wont touch with a 10ft pole) It has been said already that pathfinder is just DnD 3.75, I would go ahead pick up the CRB online and try it out. grab a group of guys who have already played 5e and try it out. @brclb90 4 жыл бұрын
I mostly concur of these points, however there is a major part left out here. The points made in this video, where DnD should have, are actually DnD rules. DnD 3.5. Not Pathfinder. Pathfinder took them from DnD and slightly changed. People felt they were unnecessary and left them behind. They were too much to remember for most people, too much to calculate, too much to bother. The old players were frustrated mainly because of this reason, "Sure you can simplify the armor system, the magic system, the combat system... sure it will make the game easier to play. And sure it will be more fun to play the game like this. But only TEMPORARILY. It will get boring fast". This was my main reason to never convert to 5E. Its simply too simple. For most part you as the player is being spoon fed. After you play 3-5 different games things start to be repetitive. As it gets more repetitive and simple, your role-play will also get more simple. And at some point your player will turn into murder hobos, because they will wrongly think that it is the only fun part left to play. Now I am not against 5E. It is proven that it was need for the industry to flourish and more people to join the glorious ranks of table top role players. However its simplicity is a curse for many people especially they have a math brain and feel like "things are not coherent". I believe the best way to battle this simplicity is to start with 5E, and when everyone is fairly proficient with the concepts, go back to 3.5, which is a far more complex and steady system. However I also realize to problems of learning 2 systems, no matter how similar. I believe this is only for more hardcore players, not for the fainthearted.

Honestly, though, Pathfinder corrects many weak points in 3.5: skills being too specialized and the quirkiness of combat maneuvers and Turn/Rebuke Undead which have been streamlined and balanced with the CMB vs CMD system and Channel Positive/Negative Energy respectively (what was a seldom-used, overly complicated afterthought now became a really cool and essential class feature!), etc. I played both, and Pathfinder doesn't remove anything from the 3.5 experience, in my honest opinion (it's actually retrocompatible most of the time, so you can use those spells from the Spell Compendium if your DM allows them, play in your favourite setting, etc.). Actually, it adds many nice details and options, such as called shots (I love them)! You even get more feats, and thus, more ways to customize your characters! I had actually been tweaking the 3.5 system to my taste for quite a while, only to find Pathfinder already did most of the work for me when I finally found it, haha! XD I agree with your statement concerning 5E, though. Too simple to my taste as well, although there are quite a few gems that are worth adopting, here and there.

A suggestion for armor is, comes from the phrase: "Just because you have leather to dampen the damage, doesn't mean the hammer strike doesn't hurt". With that in mind, have a "slighty hit" span, that each armor can kinda 'half damage taken', and base it on Dex for dodging and Con for damage reduction in some math equation (easy to do though). Imaging a "Not damaged" scale (from to-hit 1-x), followed by a "slightly hit" (for to-hit x-y) and "fully hit" (y+). We could write it as such: AC: 13-15 Above meaning "up to 13 is a full dodge, 13-15 (both included) is half damage / a reduction, and above 15 is full damage". Take this further, and have a difference to leather and metal armor; * Leather allows you to dodge the attack fully (current rules on 'not hit'), full damage (also current rules), but differentiate on piercing, bludgeoning and slashing damage. * Leather doesn't really do anything from bludgeoning (perhaps damage reduction on to-hit 1 on the 'slightly hit'). * Leather does a medium job on slashing and piercing damage, with a damage reduction on to-hit for perhaps 2-3. Leather Armor: - Piercing AC: 13-15 - Slashing AC: 13-15 - Bludgeoning AC: 14-15 * Metal is fucking awesome to slashing damage, and provides a wider range on the 'slightly hit' scale for maybe 5-6 * Metal is good against piercing, with 'slightly-hit' on 4-5. * Metal is decent against bludgeoning damage with 'slightly-hit' on 3-4. Plate Armor: - Piercing AC: 12-16 - Slashing AC: 11-16 - Bludgeoning AC: 13-16 Now the armor matters, and it's really good in metal's favor. With a lot of metal, lower the Dex of the character. Lower Dex means less dodging and a lower 'slightly-hit' value. It could also mean lower moment, meaning it could be fair to reduce the fields you can walk by a square. Now armor matters Maybe?

Hey, why don't you play DnD 3.5 since pathfinder and 3.5 are basically the same for the most part minus that pathfinder has some cool classes like Magus, Slayer, and of course Gunslinger. There is a 3.5 Character sheet for roll 20. I never player pathfinder but I played Kingmaker and been comparing it to my 3.5 games I have been playing for a few months now and creating characters for it (one-shot tournament between 2 player characters) and it is really similar though Kingmaker definitely condensed all the skills. Edit: I have lots of problem with how armor and weapons are handled in 5e since it is very hard to go above 19 or 20 without magic and the monsters have lots of bonus to hits so what they need to roll a 5 or bellow to hit when they have AC in the high 20s

Also 5e is built that way, of having a soft/hard limit on certain statistics, on purpose. I’ve heard it referred to as bounded accuracy, which is a nice term. It’s what makes the system so simple and clean, by the numbers being very fixed based on level and other factors rather than random numerical increases (like PF), there’s no point where a player character becomes an untouchable god to people of a lower level, as 5e likes that more grounded, mundane approach to fantasy, whereas a lot of other systems strongly support high to epic fantasy.

Pathfinder 2e attempted to make a more streamlined system. It does this well in most cases, and not so much in others. Example: Players have 3 actions per turn. Attacking only takes 1. You can therefore attack multiple times on your turn. Yay! However: To not make this overpowered there's a mechanic where you take a penalty for each consecutive attack you do during your turn. Now you have to note down 2 more numbers for your attack rolls. Boo! That said, I absolutely LOVE the mundane and magic items in 2e. You have so many things to choose from and if you keep your eye on them you'll always have something to spend your gold on. And using bulk instead of real weight measurements makes calculation my inventory encumbrance without slowing down the game actually possible.

A great video as always :) A few thoughts from me: The idea of special materials for weapons exists in the PHB, with the silvering of weapons. So the idea at least exists. And things like mithril and adamantine armor are magic armors, though they sound more like materials to me personally. I guess even if a DM doesn't want magic shops per se it isn't to much of a stretch that they could allow armors to be upgraded with those materials or specifically forged out of those materials (for an appropriate price of course). In my experience wizards and any characters with either the ritual caster feat or warlock with the pact of the tome (they pay even more...) have so much use for any money. In a campaign I currently DM my warlock has copied one ritual, is saving up for the next one (halfway there) and has a 3rd one in the "queue" as well. EDIT: sorry I posted this a bit to soon (accidentally hit the save button), I'll add a bit more to this comment in one more edit (I need a couple of minutes) :P As for more interesting weapons - I think they almost wanted to go the route of the being more or less a cosmetic choise, but I think we all would love to see a bit more variety. Currently you have basically just a couple of categories: polearm, 2 handed, versatile one handed, finesse one handed, light one handed weapons (dual wielding is the reason to use a short sword instead of a rapier, since you don't need a feat to dual wield them, but scimitar or short sword doesn't matter ;)), crossbows (with the hand cross bow being pretty unique), bows. Technically a dagger has an advantage over a 2nd short sword for dual wielding with the ability that you can throw it, but sadly that comes up so rarely, that it is usually just a weaker choise. Maybe we need more weapons with the special property, instead of trying to "reinvent" the existing weapons? Lance and whip and net are interesting (sadly not really useful for using up money, but they are certainly special). Recently my other warlock used his pact weapon feature to change his usual greatsword into a lance and it was amazing in that specific spot. He just wanted a weapon with reach and was pretty sure the enemy wouldn't close in on him and went with the 1d12 instead of the 1d10 he would have gotten with a halberd, just killing an air elemental later in the fight, which otherwise would have gotten another turn. An idea for a homebrew item I had just yesterday: swordbreaker: Martial, 1 handed, finesse, light, 1d4 piercing. The swordbreaker isn't primarily designed to hurt enemies and gets a -1 to hit and to damage rolls. If you dual wield with a swordbreaker in one hand you get +1 AC. Rouges are proficient with the sword breaker. The idea is that is is the worse offensive option for dual wielding, but it provides slightly better defense.

I'm currently running a campain that's in an adventurer high-school setting and one of my classes is a shop class where the players can learn about different materials they can use to make specific effects added on to their weapons or armor. Things like status effects they can add on to their current stuff. That way I can give them the tools to go and work towards whatever type of load out their characters want to have

This discussion made me instantly think of Star Wars KoTR 2. It has both the adding various amounts of dex modifiers to different armors and simple weapon upgrades like crit threat range. That was probably the first game to get me into rpgs :)

Feat: Dagger Mastery [] You've learned how to use your dexterity to ensure the dagger lands almost unerringly. -- Crit on 18-20 when using a dagger -- x4 crits when using a dagger (Extra attack die are still x2) Feat: Vital Knowledge (Rogue Only) [] You've studied the body to know exactly where to strike to cripple your target -- Sneak Attack crits gain an extra die per level (50% increase or x2.5 crit) Or did you want that extra 2 dex to cap off?

So, at the risk of going off on a tangent, I do think Pathfinder 2nd does something SUPER interesting in terms of armour/weapons enchantments. The enchantments are just runes that you can put onto your favourite weapons and armour. Give your favourite armour extra AC, some extra saving throw bonuses, let your weapons hit more often and hit harder, just by looting runes and throwing them on. It really allows you to grow with your weapons and armour, staying with your trusty sword that your father was passed to by their father and their father from level 1 to level 20 by just switching in-and-out runes to enchant them with. There's something beautiful RP wise of this. Loot wise, it means as a GM you can throw enchanted weapons and armour and not be fussed if it's a greataxe but your barbarian was hoping for a greatsword. Just fling the runes onto their current greatsword and they'll happy. You can also hide runes in dark dungeons, inscribed onto stones or ancient leathers to be transferred off onto a new weapon/armour. It's just immensely flexible. In terms of weapons/armour flexibility, Pathfinder 1st definitely did suffer to some degree certain weapons/armours never getting much use (e.g. why would a rogue use a dagger when they can use a rapier, excluding that one archetype?). Pathfinder 2nd used said rune enchantments before, weapon proficiency (where the "to hit" modifier increases as you level) and weapon properties (e.g. Finesse, where you use Dex to roll to hit instead of strength, as a property) to generate a lot of complexity. On top of this is the class feat system, where you gain different specific moves you can do during combat by spending actions (you get three per turn, can be used for anything), whose damage output can be potent enough to mean that war razor is actually useful for some classes (e.g. swashbuckler). Is Pathfinder 2nd/1st more complex than D&D 5th? Definitely, but I always believe it's worth weighing out not only your tolerance for complexity but also if said complexity rewards enough depth to compensate, which you touch on. I genuinely believe it does, but I'm used to this degree (D&D 3.5 was the first system I learned), and I'm confident enough I can quite easily teach new players how to player Pathfinder 2nd/1st (and have done in the past). I definitely do recommend at least a glance towards Pathfinder 2nd, as it does feel more accessible due to things like a three-action-economy rather than remembering all the different types of actions (standard/move/quick/free/full). Edit: By the way, fun fact about Pathfinder 2nd having standing up provoking attacks of opportunity with classes with the required feat: My players at my table tend to adore tripping everything they can because then they stand up and it's this celebration of free attacks on the enemy.

These things you listed came from 3 and 3.5 edition. Keen, masterwork, etc. Pathfinder is literally just a rework of 3.5 from people who were abysmally disappointed by the human rights violation known as 4th edition.

@MrRhexx at 12 mins you were musing about the magic items in 5E. I agree! I feel like it is a function of this simplified play (and battle math) so they really went vanilla for the all the magical items. In contrast 4E had a plethora of armors and mechanics to really improve them. In longer campaigns I give the players more 4E choices; it makes the game more interesting if they are a rogue that needs to decide between leather armor or armor that gives a +1 to opportunity attacks (OA) but has -1 AC. 4E was huge on weaponry and items that had a specific buff or flavor-able ability. And my favorite, stylish equipment that instantly improves your CHA with certain NPC's and or Races. Great Video!

Great topic! I haven’t found people to play with since my early 20’s when we were in D&D 3.5. Now as I purchase items I purchase pathfinder because it’s similar To 3.5. With the addition of pathfinder 2e ( maybe trying to be more like D&D 5e) I steal what I like and incorporate it into my game. I started with the 3 move actions per turn. I like that better than the more complicated way Pathfinder 1e does it. Keep up the great content and I would love this to be a reoccurring topic!

Considering your argument on armor, I liked how different materials for armor and weapons were listed in the core rulebook. Adamantine and mithril armor weren't considered magic items, they were different materials that made it more expensive. Adamantine gave some damage reduction, and mitrhil made it count as one category lighter (mithril plate was considered medium, and mithril scale was light). Then there were things like darkwood, dragonhide, 3.5 had leaf weave... And then there was also better tools. Masterwork weapons and armors, thieves tools, instruments, smiths tools, and so on. Things like tindertwigs and other consumables that were actually useful, contrary to acid and alchemical fire which are only really good in gimmicky builds with thief rogue and tavern brawler in 5th edition I think it would be cool if maybe you released a little splat sheet of homebrew stuff for more weapons and armors without magic

Here’s another take on the armor class idea that could alter your perception on taking the armor that just gives you the better score. I believe in 1st and 2nd edition, one additional bonus from magical armor related to saving throws. If you had +3 magical padded armor, it gave also gave you a bonus to certain saving throws, like vs. breath weapon, Wanda, spells. Now, compare that to having +1 studded leather. Both have the same AC, but the +3 padded armor’s bonus for saving throws makes it more valuable. Something you could easily work into Pathfinder or 5E.

One thing to note, bringing up the rogue in Pathfinder, since you never played the TRPG. The Pathfinder 1E RPG has tonnes of mundane tool options for a rogue to plan a heist, with equipment to assist from intel gathering, infiltration, lock breaking, and distraction applications. Such as perfumes which can affect socialization, sticky paper to reduce the noise of breaking glass, telescopes, different types of lockpicking kits with different concealability and effectiveness, different kinds of utility arrows to pull of stunts out of the game Thief, glass cutters, climbing equipment, disguise kits, etc. I like to think my favorite aspect of the Pathfinder RPG is the ability to design a kit during character creation and in town, from which you can plan in accordance to your missions. Between all of the books, there is so many equipment options that you actually can get that sense that you tailored your kit perfectly for the job you approached, or simply made a general-purpose kit to tackle the majority of problems. There is a wide array of mundane and magical tools that you can use and synergize, and with the established crafting system, in the Golarion universe at least, the only barrier to the magic item you want is whether you can afford it, and whether you can find a person who knows the requisite spells to craft it, if not simply buying it at a magic shop.

Soul Forge is a system that is coming out very soon, that balances this complexity vs simplicity along with character uniqueness very very well. I'll let you know whenever that happens, it also has a very nice digital character sheet that is going to become a web app which makes it even simpler. These guys have been developing this system for 6 years and it is awesome. I'll make a comment once it comes out.

Having started with AD&D back in the 80s and then jumping on Pathfinder about 8 years ago, I can say that the thing that really makes a difference, for me, is the world. While I'll always have some fondness for Faerun, the Golarion setting is something that I enjoyed and got immersed in as an organized play GM and I just got more involved with it as I started running APs for my home group. I've GMed the same guys through Reign of Winter, Giantslayer and Wrath of the Righteous and I feel that the stories, and the world they are set in, is a big strength for the Pathfinder system, be it 1E (my favorite) or 2E(I've GMed it a few times, not as good as 1E imo, but adequate to the task). I think Owlcat Games has realized this and is why they have had so much success with Kingmaker (and hopefully Wrath, when it comes out).
