To me it had more of a meaning of struggling with self-worth, listening others and how to live her life. Her parents were close to divorce and she didn't want stay home. Perhaps she was afraid that she caused the situation and had guilt for it. Anyways, she was getting picked in school for being different, short, and she was very aware of that. She tried to fight back but her voice was not heard: teacher ignored her very early in film and instead said go home which wasn't either a place where she wanted to be (it's even worse when you think how the teacher knew she was getting bullied and yet she ignored although she doesn't know this). No one was helping her when she wanted someone to listen her, LISTEN. Humans were unable to listen nor communicate 100% of their feeling as it was said in the movie. You could see this for example just by watching her parents being unable to say the words that needed to be said: they hated seeing the other suffering or self harming so they couldn't see each other while both still loved one another deep down anyways. So the sea (Umi) listened her because she wanted to be listened or found. Then 80% of the movie happens and she hears the sea and finally can show all her feelings for the sea. She sees new life being born and life dying and understands something that we are all just living creatures who have a limited time in the world and it's the memories that fill our life. The ascension or what ever you may call it was her realization that perhaps she wasn't terrible worthless person after all. Finally her parents find her and she finally understands that she's perfect the way she is after all and she can live the life the way she wants and it's her monogatari. The end

This movie really reminded me of my nine year old self who would ponder such things as the vastness of the ocean, space and meaning of life. Inevitably not having any answers but imaging the deep sea or far cosmos. Weirding myself out and having to snap back to reality. So even when the movie became more and more abstract, I didn't feel completely lost. It reminded me of the kinds of things I've wondered about over and over again. Feeling so "deep" but not being able to express any of it.

I loved this film! When the credits hit, my brother and I let out screams of confusion and joy. *SPOILER ALERT This is my interpretation of the movie and the ending. The three important pieces to understand the film are 1) the song, 2) the meteor, and 3) the children. 1. The Importance of Song This is how the sea life communicate. Before we dive deeper into that, we must dive deeper into how we humans communicate. When one has an idea or an emotion, think of it as raw data in the human conscious. If we want to share it or have others understand how we feel, we must compress this data. There are many ways we humans compress this data. This includes words, facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, art, and song. There is a flaw in how we communicate; the receivers will never understand the full emotion, vision, or idea of the sender. Currently, it's impossible to share a one-to-one (exact) image, emotion, memory, and vision with others. When sea life communicates, little compression occurs. These amazing creatures send their raw feelings, emotions, ideas, etc. through song! This allows any creature to receive the data, decode it, and understand the exact emotion, thought, vision, and memory. All these songs are being sent through the Ocean. The Ocean stores all the conscious, emotion, and memories of those who live within it. Ruka, Umi, and Sora have the gift of understanding the language of the sea. 2. The meteor We must ask the question, what is a meteor? A meteor is a piece of planet or star. Knowing this, we know that there are meteors as old as the universe itself. The original stars and planets have become meteors that have traveled to new planets and galaxies. When those new planets die, they'll become meteors and travel to even more planets; it's a never-ending cycle. Some of these planets will be bare, some will have oceans, and some will have life in these oceans. This is why a meteor is so special it contains oceans from the many worlds and galaxies. 3. The Children From the beginning, we know that there is something special about Ruka. All the fish in the aquarium gather around her. Similar responses can be observed with Sora and Umi. It was not by chance that Ruka met the boys, but it was fate. The universe chose them from the moment they were born. Putting the Pieces Together to Understand the Ending The ocean, meteors, and the roles of the children come together. Ruka and Umi watch the meteor fall down to Earth (the Universe told Umi it was going to happen). The life of the Ocean soon finds out a meteor hit. Whales sing to communicate to the entire Ocean that the festival is about to begin. Ruka hears the song on Jim's computer and understands that there is a celebration. The Festival The purpose of the festival is to become one with the Universe and to start a new. For the festival to start, the meteor must be decoded. The children are needed to decode the meteor. This is their role. Ruka and Space What we witness when Ruka is in space is the many worlds, galaxies, life, consciousness, emotion, and memories that are on the meteor. When the process is over, she is ejected from the whale and falls back down to earth. Anglade and the Musicbox After the scene with Ruka, it cuts to Anglade winding a music box. The song that plays is "Happy Birthday." This symbolizes the birth of something new. New life has been created. The Ocean and Space On Earth, we are sandwiched between to worlds the Ocean and Space. During the festival, a piece of the Ocean was merged into Space. The life of the Ocean was successfully able to be one with the Universe. Final Thoughts This was a damn good movie. Previously, my favorite new Ghibli movie was "When Marnie Was There", but after watching this movie, it's my new favorite. I love how the writing, look, and soundtrack come together to get us a bit closer to actually understand what the language of the sea could be like. I also couldn't help but notice that the end of the movie shares a lot of similarities to the "End of Evangelion", my other favorite movie. Cheers!

My kind of understanding of the film: space, the sea is as vast as the space. They are similar in this matter. They live, without the need to be exploited by humans. By the constant exploring humans widen their territories. This is why the scientists in the movie are kept astray.

Part of the film's themes are that of the unknown. Namely that we as people have limited understanding of our own universe. We can only perceive 4% of what's in the universe and we have only traveled a small portion of our oceans. In that sense I believe it's fitting that the film doesn't reveal its mysteries, show character backstory, explain world lore, or even tell you what's happening. Although since I have a passing interests in both astronomy and marine biology, aside from literary writing, I think I have a good grasp on the film, but even so I understand and am content at the fact that we can merely experience the film and not understand it. Because that's how life is in our universe.

The ascension or what ever you may call it was her realization that perhaps she wasn't terrible worthless person after all. Finally her parents find her and she finally understands that she's perfect the way she is after all and she can live the life the way she wants and it's her monogatari. The end

This movie to me meant understanding the deeper meaning of the cycle of life, death and rebirth. We are all on our own spiritual journeys to understand not our purpose in this life. As Ruka feels she is unworthy to of experiences she just encountered. But as the old woman character says at the end of the film “YOU ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE.” Literally had me sobbing at the end of the film. It seems to me that this movie suffers from the same problem that Akira suffered from, while Akira was a visual spectacle and very well directed the fact the creator of the manga had to butcher his own story the spans 6 thick manga volumes to fit it into a 2hr movie was going to inevitably impact the story and how comprehensible it is. Same with Children of the Sea, which almost tries the same exact thing and butchers a 5 vol story to fit it into a 2hr movie, the result as should have been expected is a truncated version of the story that's missing a lot of character development and worldbuilding, which makes it much more confusing (unnecessarily so) than it should have been, making these movies basically elaborate advertisements for the manga, which is sad, and one of the main reasons i prefer original anime movies that aren't based on anything like Wolf Children and Your Name.

@@simonrex5458 Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Attack on Titan are some of the few perfect manga adaptations, specially in the case of Attack on Titan they elevate the source material so much with the music, voice-acting and thrilling dynamic action scenes. Personally I think anime movies should be more focused on original ideas and concepts, they should stop trying to butcher stories that span 5-8 manga volumes and stuff them into 2hr movies, unless they try doing a trilogy or something which is something that's rarely tried in Anime movies.

This is why I prefer TV series over movies. More of the story and character development can be explored in a set amount of episodes than a movie can hope to accomplish. I did enjoy Children of the Sea I suppose in a similar way to Akira. Flood of visuals and abstract concepts makes me really ponder. But its a shame how confusing both become, definitely felt something was missing . At least there is source material to read to fill in the gaps. At the same time I think it did pretty well within the constraints of a film.

I'm sorry but I had to continously force myself to watch this movie and even after that i still wasn't able to finish it. Honestly, the animation was more or less the only element that got me through 35 mins of the movie. I had a lot of personal issues with it mainly dealing with the lack of storyline or purpose: Why were the other characters, a.k.a the human officials so involved in the sea party? Why were they always 'out of time'? The parents picking out special days to finaly realise they have a daughter who seemed to have been revealing some symptoms of emotional neglect? Why did the main protagonist go on with the boys' impulses when she had not built a strong relationship with them. The older boy's (the blonde) love-hate relationship with op was a confusing; one moment he was making some not-so-nice comments about her (which to be honest were true but could have been said diplomaticly without the unecessary sass) and the next moment he's holding her hand and dragging her to sea. This truly seemed to be spongy art: colours splashing everywhere with no narrative or motive like the speaker stated. But because these are not the kinds of art I'm into and did not enjoy does not mean there arent people out there who may really adore it. It's still someone's hardwork nonetheless, which to be respected.

I saw it in the cinema subbed late last year. On Twitter I wrote: Film 3: Children of the Sea. A stand-alone anime movie. When a girl having personal probkens discovers 2 boys living at the aquarium after being raised by dugongs, obviously adventure ensues. The art style is un-typical, and the messaging a bit over done. But when the main concept is trying to meld traditional beliefs with modern scientific understandings and does so by means of a visual LSD trip, perhaps over done is really just right.

I really....really loved the art work. And the "look you don't have to understand anything, just roll with it" attitude was refreshing. Also...the sound track...was really good and there wasn't any excessive music, sometimes, just ambiance was enough. Edit: The movies that this reminds me of...feeling wise (music, art, film, cinema, "ambiance?") is blade runner 2049. I watched it on the "big screen"...and....even though the genre is more cyberpunk/scifi...it still gave me the same feeling as this movie. You don't get wtf is going on....but you don't need to.

This movie in its most basic form is about becoming enlightened and finding yourself. The granny at the end states it herself in which she remembers a time when she was rukas age that the same thing happened to her. The universe came to her in the form of 2 boys to show her not only the secrets of the sea but to understand that there is greatness within her. The way I understood the film is that every living creature in this world is connected. We all are made of the same matter, matter that it's found in space. We literally have a cosmos inside of us. From scientific findings life started in the sea, then when the atmosphere became more livable the animals from the sea evolved to live on land, we come from the sea. This is explained during the last monologue when the guy is looking through the telescope and playing the music box, basically again we all are one and one with the universe and everything in it. I read part of the manga before I watched the movie and they skipped quite a lot of things. I forgot if the movie explained it, but the meteor in the manga symbolized sperm, yes sperm. They explained that meteors were considered the "sperm" of the gods and when they fell at sea it created life.

this is the point of the movie: there are things that humans will never understand nor explain, but only feel. even when the answers in which we seek to satisfy our curiosity are present, whispered by the universe, we can never see it because we are uncapable of doing so. it is evident on the fact that some rated this story down for the fact that we did not understand what and why everything happened when the main point was to never actually try to comprehend them. just to feel. just to witness its beauty as how ruka had witnessed it on one of her mundane summer days. in the manga, there was more backstories and build up on each of the characters that explain why they behave that certain way. there were also chapters in which they had shown that there are many strange and supernatural phenomena that had been occurring years before Umi, Sora, and Ruka happened and are maybe linked to the festival. there were a lot of other things left out in the movie which kinda disappointed me when i first watched it. but the visuals, the way they interpreted igarashi's work to fit in a 2 hour movie were still superb and left me satisfied.

Instead of appreciating the movie for what it is, the guys said it was "boring" or the plot of "everthing is connected" is not novel enough. People are always complaining about the movie landscape. But if someone tries something new, it's dilettante or too convoluted. I am not saying the the movie's concept is something new, but the movie does a good job in letting the viewer feel it.

Hoo-boy, that film has a lot of philosophical and metaphysical symbolism. It felt so existential at times, but as the story progresses I like how the message shifts to, "Hey, don't worry we're all secretly connected. You just gotta know how to find the clues." I'm still reeling from some of the intense animated 'dream' whale bits.

Just watched this movie and I HAD to come to KZbin to see what other people had to say about it. WHOA. I’m still processing it myself. I love what you thought. It is truly a work of art, and I’m gonna take a couple of days to figure out what it meant

Well, this is a movie I won’t show my mom since she has trouble following these type of films.

I got to see this in a theater. The climax of the movie was one of the most immersive, gobsmacking things I've ever seen. Like, up until that point, the movie is beautiful, but a bit boring with ambitious but flawed storytelling. Then it hits that scene and you're just transported. There's no way to describe it other than "bewildering". It just OVERWHELMS you. I'm a film buff who has seen lots of weird and powerful movies (stuff like Spirit of the Beehive, La Porcille, A Taste of Cherry, etc.). Trust me when I say that that scene is a rare cinematic achievement. When we left the theater, my GF seemed to be in a daze. As we approached the theater exit, she grabbed my arm, buckled a little, and then began sobbing uncontrollably. She was apologizing and saying, "I don't know why I'm crying." I got what she meant completely. The actual events of the movie aren't "sad" per se. But by the end you've been on such an emotional journey that you are exhausted, and you feel as if the movie has filled you with emotional contradictions that you can no longer contain. You overflow.
