What Did We Learn This Generation?

This next console gen has been a long time coming.
The Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii - collectively known as the seventh generation - have steered the course of the industry since 2005.
Much has changed over the last eight years in gaming - and as we perch on the precipice of a new era, perhaps it's a time for retrospection.
So, what did we learn from this generation?
The most obvious change with the advent of new hardware is in the technical specification - each generation is faster and more capable than the last.
At the time of the current gen's introduction, HDTVs were starting to become widely available - and the Xbox 360 and PS3 both took advantage of this by supporting HD video formats.
This wasn't without issue - in 2005 standard-def CRTs were still very common, and some games ran into issues when running at the lower resolution - many complained about the small text in Dead Rising, for instance.
However, with HDTVs dropping in price over the console's lifespan, many made the switch to such displays, and the next generation is all set to embrace an HD-only approach.
We also saw a good old format war in the early-gen: Sony's Blu Ray versus Toshiba's ill-fated HD-DVD.
The PS3's Blu Ray drive made it an attractive offering for those looking for an entry-level HD player, with even the exorbitant launch price proving competitive.
Microsoft released the half-hearted add-on HD-DVD player for the 360, although after a brief flounder Blu-Ray became the dominant format, and will indeed be the optical media of choice for both the Xbox One and PS4.
Quite how long physical media will remain relevant is another matter - digital downloads and streaming services such as Netflix are unburdened by such concerns.
It seems as though redundant hardware is a recurring trend in Gen7, with games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band clogging up homes with fake plastic guitars.
Rhythm games were a fun diversion while they lasted, but for a more persistent peripheral you need to look to motion controllers.
The Wii proved phenomenally popular with its Wiimote-nunchuck combo - and Microsoft and Sony followed suit in arm flailing fashion, with the Kinect and Move respectively.
Well suited to certain genres - dancing games and casual party games spring to mind - but such forms of input can be a little less precise for games that demand fine-grained control.
It seems as though motion controls aren't going anywhere just yet, however - the Kinect is returning with a next-gen upgrade, and the Wii U and PS4 both retain support for their equivalent.
This gen also saw the widespread acceptance of online gaming - the Xbox 360 built on the impressive inroads the original Xbox made with Xbox LIVE, and the PS3 found fully-fledged online support in place of the limited selection on the PS2.
Online multiplayer was very much a killer app for this generation, with titles such as Halo and Call of Duty giving rise to thriving online communities - and inspiring many to emulate their success.
Co-operative games have proven popular too - with 4 players proving the gold standard in titles like Borderlands and Left 4 Dead: and the less-competitive space is ideal for the enjoyment of social gaming.
Voice chat is now a default means of communication, helped particularly on the Xbox 360 by bundled inclusion of headset and the early availability of party chat.
Gaming is now very much a social platform, with shared spaces interlinked by a suite of communication means.
The world might not be quite ready for a mandatory always-online console, but we are certainly getting closer than ever before.
One side effect of this connectivity is the emergence of the digital marketplace - with DLC taking the place of the expansion packs of yore.
This was a reluctant introduction met with many missteps, perhaps most notably with Oblivion's Horse Armor DLC - an aesthetic upgrade for your equine chum costing a few of your hard-earned dollars.
These electronic offerings did improve, however - and there have been some very memorable extensions to games that have been more fairly priced.
The online marketplace also permits a scalable price point - all the way from a full price AAA title, through smaller-scope indie games and stand-alone arcade titles - to games which don't require any initial investment at all.
Free-to-play games have found the greatest success on the PC, but in recent months we've seen a slew of such titles announced for the consoles - and it's likely they'll feature on the next-gen platforms too.
Such offerings are supported by in-game purchases - sometimes for cosmetic purposes, otherwise to eliminate a grind for resources or to grant a more obvious advantage.

I was a console gamer throughout my childhood, and early teenage years. I most recently had an Xbox 360, but lost interest a few years ago. I've been PC gaming ever since. The price points of consoles and their games were always a turn off, and the mere mechanics of it all feel almost archaic. Buy a console - buy a game - pay for internet access exclusive to the console - play game - buy next generation console - buy a game, etc.

PC might be the superior platform, but have fun with the awful community and the lack of propper customer support. The chaotic cancer that is steam made me switch to console after 10 years of being a pc gamer, and I've never looked back since. The only thing I miss is Team Fortress 2 and Custom Zombies for world at war, but not being in the lazy hands of valve anymore is worth it to not play those. Especially as a german, where games on steam get banned all the time in our country, with no way of playing an imported copy.. On my PS4, I can play whatever the fuck I want. Even Mortal Kombat and Dead Island. And most importantly: Nioh and Bloodborne. Those two games make me never switch back.

I was a console gamer in the 90's, then switched to PC fully in Gen 5. The Wii dragged me back to console but, honestly, only for party games. My parents randomly bought me an X-Box 360 (it was really, really random), so I split my time between PC and the 360. I mostly played RPGs on my 360, including all three Mass Effect games, all three Dragon Age games, Oblivion (well, replayed Oblivion as I had it for PC first) and Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, amongst other lesser known and less beloved games. I think what I liked most about going back to consoles after spending years on the PC was the controller. There is just something comfortable about the 360's controller that I really dig. I liked it so much, I went out and bought one for my computer. I think the generation was really fun, maybe not as innovating or astounding as previous ones (I still remember being blown away by the N64). To me, this was just a continuation of what we have had since Generation 5, 3-D games with increasingly prettier visuals. The emphasis on sharing was, to me, the biggest change the generation brought us. I have really loved watching people play games and that is something that just wasn't super easy to do on console before this generation.

This gen has been pretty garbage for the most part IMO. X1 and PS4 just seem to churn out the same stuff as PS3/360, just with prettier visuals. I like the direct share thing though. Wii U is a flop but mercifully tries something new and at least caters for local multi-player. I'm not a PC guy, but I can't deny this gen sees more people looking the benefits of PC gaming. 1080p, 60FPS that seems all important these days. Constant stream of indie titles and almost doing away with buying disks. I hope to see this gen improves, but I'll be very interested to see a dramatic change in the following gen. Which I feel may come a lot sooner this time.

+stufaman I agree. we went from a great generation (6) A generation which had a huge selection of new and old ips, and with a promising future for the gaming industry. To go in for a generation with fewer of everthing, to ultimately leave behind traces of a gloomy future for the gaming industry- 1. Online passes 2. season passes 3. drm 4. mictrotransations 5. day one patches 6. less contect in the base game 7. more focus on multiplayer then singeplayer 8. third/fp wave( both good and bad) 9. The big wave of milking 10. death of many publishers 11. hd collection wave 12. casual gaming wave 13. motion gaming 14, Few odd new types of games. 15. less old school retro collection disc.. 16. broken system at launch has turn into a standard. However, there were a few bright spots for 7 generation 1. gaming broadcasting Became big under 7 generations(noobtoob, iw, ec) 2. Online which offered deeper gameplay(l4d,borderline, killing floor) 3.Much easier to access older games 4. E3 raise to mainstream 5. Return of some older ips( even if many of those ended up bad) 6. Some of the best FPS / third person shooter came out during this yen 7.Wide range of the most common genres(racing,sport,shooter,2d platform) 8. arcde gaming got an return. 9. Indie gaming 10. One of the better generation for tv/ movies franchises.. Batman,simpsons, southpark,transformer,ghostbusters, spider-man,

guys seriously I'm depressed af with all these pc comments, I fucking hate my own country for PC miners and shitty economy that takes computer parts so much money compared to consoles. it seems every time I stepped into a gaming video it seems that I play on consoles that it seems I'm inferior and my fun, my gaming experiences are just, well don't matter, because I play on consoles. I'm starting to steer away from gaming tbh because of this, until my country gets better I wish I'm invalid, atleast. but this whole PCMR and console wars are so political I accepted to be called peasant all the damn time. fuck this. I'm just dropping this comment, its on fucking youtube comment section of all things but I just, don't know if the games I played that I had fun or experienced are even real because ITS ON CONSOLE DUH and its just, well. Plain depressing. sorry.

"Social gaming" - what kind of garbage is this? I feel disgusted about the online/multiplayer direction. It is pitiful how developers seek to create a badass multiplayer at the expense of a story mode. They still make good singleplayer games, but I can only count them on one hand. Story mode is always overshadowed by some mindless online mode and worthless multiplayer upgrades that are called DLCs. However, that's just me. I like singleplayer games and I have never cared much about multiplayer modes.

it only seems they've hit a plateau because the consoles aren't much more powerful than previous gen, so there wasn't much room to grow. xbone/ps4 hardware is around the equivalent of a mid-range gaming pc from 2009. however on the pc side of things, graphics are jaw droppingly beautiful as we continue to push the highest end of hardware to its limits with every year becoming stronger and stronger. heck look at the original crysis from 2007(which had no dumbing down for consoles), that game still looks amazing at max settings, i'd even say it looks better the new ps4/x1 games. it can run at 1080p at 60fps which consoles have yet to achieve without massive graphical sacrifices.
@acdcgnr100
@acdcgnr100 9 жыл бұрын
That is because they still have to figure out how to optomize games for the new hardware, look at the first ps3 and 360 games, they didnt look much better than ps2/xbox games. They will just get better and better, and by the end of the generation it will be easy to notice the difference.
@ChristianArreguin
@ChristianArreguin 9 жыл бұрын
no, there was room to optimize because it was non-standard hardware, devs were still learning how to code for it. this time around the new consoles are literally shitty PCs with laptop APU which is a cpu and gpu in one with mediocre performance. there will be almost no room to optimize.
@acdcgnr100
@acdcgnr100 9 жыл бұрын
Christian Arreguin You're wrong. The reason you cant optimize like that for pcs is because of the thousands of configurations and the fact that it is always evolving. With a standard set of hardware they can use many tricks to get all they can out of the hardware throughout the years of practice they will have.
@ChristianArreguin
@ChristianArreguin 9 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but no, there are no "tricks". Any performance benefits will be minuscule. You can only optimize shit hardware so much, sort of like the the old saying "there's no replacement for displacement". These new consoles are using mid grade hardware from like 2010 if not earlier. It's an embarrassment.

Really? PS4 is one of the most popular consoles ever produced and well Xbox One had a bumpy start Microsoft's support for backwards compatibility and services like game pass have improved their console. The only console that did not succeed was the Wii u, but even then it proved innovative and full of quality games. You really can't believe that the current gen, which is more popular than their gen 7 counterparts at the same time in their life cycle, is disappointing. Gen 8 will go down as the generation that proves consoles aren't going anywhere and that there's room for improvement inbetween, although a lot of people don't like that, that all seems pretty exciting to me!
@overlordalfredo
@overlordalfredo 4 жыл бұрын
@@anameofsomesort959 you seem to be referring to (supposedly) only US numbers. Gen7 was globally much more successful than the entire Gen8 and officially Nintendo Switch is part of Gen8 as well. Most players never upgraded to PS4 or Xbox One because they brought little new to the table. Better graphics (like every generation), better online services for most games (but still very unreliable overall) and Gen8 is famous for its remakes and remasterd games and the lack of new franchises or "blockbuster" games. Globally Gen6 was the one that gets the strongest positive feedback from Retro gamers and Gen7 got the best sales and placed second on almost any official polls taken. Gen8 basically just existed and had also the Switch, but that's it!
