Even the Sheriff has rolled onto a scene and asked me what I need and actually assisted me in searching a vehicle in the rain before. LOL

I eventually transferred to a much small agency near Huntsville, AL. Supervisors were all amazing. I think bigger = more bureaucratic = worse supervisors.

It took me 10 years to make sergeant, another five to lieutenant and eight more to captain (patrol division commander) before retirement in 1997. Your approach is absolutely right and is how I directed our supervisors approach their job. Autocratic sergeants who micro manage generated a lot of animosity. My goal as a captain was to get on the street three hours a week, I seldom made it.

I second that 👍, I work in a non sworn campus safety department and it is run like a police department in a good way. I can say that a university police department deals with a lot of sexual assaults, drinking on campus, dui's, medical aids and such. We deal with the student culture, which i think is a cool benefit of the job.

@@Rozzco16 what is unique us that we have students, faculty, staff and the local community which all interact with the campus. We have on campus dorms with people living on campus. The local neighborhoods surround the campus so we become like a neighborhood watch for them.

It varies wildly from university to university. Some campus police do all of the same things the city police do, while others are seen as nothing more than glorified campus security guards. They all have the statutory powers of arrest but some of them are restricted by the school administrations on what they are allowed to do. They can get really political when students and staff are caught breaking the law, which they do quite often. The campus is basically its own little city within a city.

My supervisor sits in his office with headphones in, then when something hot comes out while officers are on scene dealing with it he gets on the radio and says “what dey got going on HQ” then when I tell him to get off the air cause I’m chasing someone I get written up.

When I was in the service, I actually hear senior non-coms say: this is what the colonel really meant to say. We all turned that guy off right away. Most of the supervisors I had as a cop were stand up guys to defended us against paper tigers who could not remember what a patrol car smelled like let alone spent much time in one. The only police reform we need is "Brass reform". We need people who will not lie to us or to citizens (i.e. "we will assign extra patrols" There are no extra patrols fool). I like this guy because he is honest and straight up.

It works pretty similarly for EMS. The newbies are usually brand new EMTs. The FTOs and supervisors are usually paramedics or above (critical care paramedics and nurses [my company hires nurses for the ambulances and air evac]). The education department is usually run by a paramedic or above. And then you have the payroll people, HR, vehicle maintenance, et cetera.

Great video, officer 401! There was a case where a police chief and detective were eating at a restaurant, when some men walked in and headed to the men's room. An alert employee saw something suspicious and told the chief & detective what he/she saw.. When the men left in a hurry, the chief & detective foot pursuited them back to the store's parking lot. One of store loss prevention officers tackled one of the men, while a off duty sheriff deputy caught the second one. The chief said it'd been 10 years since he arrested someone and 20 years since he did foot pursuit. (may have been 10 years since foot pursuit and 20 years since he arrested people...this happened a few years ago, so I don't remember all the details). God bless you and have a happy New year!

I'm glad you have a channel and are showing people that LEO are people too and the fact you are open and explain some processes also helps people understand. I've had encountered bad apples out there but the majority of officers are honorable men and women who are underpaid and risk their lives to make our community safe. Being honest and respectful has literally got me out of a jam more times than I'd like to admit but I'm older now and realized I was being stupid. Could have caught some charges that would have made my life way more difficult! Then again I got locked up for having my prescription pills outside their bottles cause I was traveling and had to get attorney and be put on probation so learn your rights and be smart, chances are you won't have anything to worry about.

here in jersey. all POs, Sergeants and LTs work 12hrs. at least where I work. The LT is the Tour Commander and 2 road Sergeants. 1 sergeant minimum. if LT is out on kelly day or other PTO day then the senior Sergeant sits in TC.

I spend 28 years in the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. Every 2 years I familiarize myself with our Case Assignment Manual and our Manual of Policies and Procedures. As such, I expect my supervisors to know more than I do. Sadly it's not the case. We had an Attempted Suicide where a guy tried to cut his own throat. The handling Deputy and Patrol Sgt discussed the case and decided there was no paperwork needed. hen the Sgt told me, I said, "OK, If you say so". He asked, "What are we suppose to do?". I said, "Since he's going to the ER, you don't need a 72 hour hold but you still need a "49" to document the attempted suicide". The Sgt told the handling Deputy to write a "49". Another time, I was working as Watch Deputy when a Patrol Deputy asked, "What's the retention for an attempted suicide?". I said, "0". Then he asked the Sgt. The Sgt said "1". The Deputy said, "Uyeda said it was a "0". The Sgt turned to me and said, "You wanna bet?". I said, "Sure. Make it easy on yourself, how much do you have in your pocket?". He said, "Let's make it a dollar". He went back to his office and called me on the phone and said, "Your dollars enroute". Our Lieutenants and Captains are as bad as our Sgts.

I've enlisted into the marines about a year ago and I've noticed that most individuals these days are narcissistic and care more about their cell phones then their brothers. This video came at a pretty good timing because lately I've been considering making a police sergeant my career goal. I used to work as the supervisor for the mobile patrol division of a security company, and the main reason I enjoyed my job was because I could be there for my crew and help them if they needed it. I had leeway and I was able to run the shift as I deemed fit. Being the on-call supervisor for night shifts meant I was the one to answer any and all calls at night for both mobile patrol and static sites. Lot of work, but I enjoyed the responsibility and the authority to be able to help everyone out. From rearranging workloads to make sure everyone else could go home on time, to sitting at the hospital for 3 hours with an angry mental patient, to being able to make the call to tell my guys double up with partners for dangerous sites.

I know one thing I can say about police (and probably all) supervision. Line officers think supervisors "lose sight" of the people in the trenches, but the line officers don't have the perspective to understand the different priorities of management. It is a tough balance and nothing is harder than being the sergeant, since they tend to be suspended between the line and the upper management. In the military I have been enlisted and commissioned and the same thing exists there. It is impossible to know what you don't know, and only rarely have I seen guys get promoted and not figure it out quickly. One weird thing for us is that LTs check reports, do scheduling, and are ultimately in charge of the watch. We are fairly small though, so it isn't like I have more than a few reports in any given day. Totally agree with you on the social aspects. Sad. Keep working hard!

I work at a private security company that operates like an auxiliary police force. We have standing posts, and patrols. Our supervisors are pretty laid back, and let us get on with our jobs without looking over our shoulders, but are still there for us when we need it. I very much like the environment.

Just like the cop who shot and killed the kid walking away from the gas station who had head phones in and who did not stop when the cop told him to. No weapon was found and the cop had no charges put on him.
