It’s when a former case becomes the blueprint to any laws that are violated. For example Miranda vs Arizona is a good one, because of that case any person arrested has to be read there rights before being questioned by the police.

21 years old, and I recently started as an auxiliary officer a few months back to see if law enforcement was for me. Best choice I ever made, can’t wait to go full time, and already made a couple stupid rookie mistakes and thankfully my supervisors seemed to appreciate that I went out of my way to be honest about my screw ups

I used to be an auxiliary officer too. I was honest, but the department I was with didn't care. No matter what the situation... it was "thank you for being honest. Because you were, nothing criminal will happen. But, simply for violating policy/protocol, here is the door, thanks for trying." There are a few other departments in the area who have auxiliary units. I have applied to them.

I consider myself very lucky to have been mentored by a veteran officer from a local agency at such a young age. He really made clear the value of integrity and self-discipline in law enforcement. As someone who is attending the academy come this fall, these are lessons I will never forget and always be thankful for.

With almost 11 years in uniformed policing. I think it is incredibly important to look after your own mental health. You will be exposed to trauma, death and put into stressful situations. Talk to people if you need to. I have lost more friends and colleagues to this and them not opening up.

The best thing a veteran cop can do is pass down his/her knowledge to new cops. That's exactly what you do your videos have helped me decide a career in law enforcement is what I want to do. Been filling out academy paperwork for the next academy year.

Paying an Officer for help: I was on the receiving end of help. The officer would not take any money, even though it was a fraction of what he saved me. Years later I realized, what I should have done is stop by the barracks and donate to the Christmas fund, or whatever fund that troop supports. (No I have not, and yes, I still plan on doing it. It is on a road that I travel about once a year.)

The #1 lesson I've learned while working in D.O.C. is "if it's not documented, it never happened". Well..that and firm, fair, consistent with everyone. Also another good tip to remember: "Could those be a setup?" Could it be I.A. checking your integrity? ( This HAS happened over and over at random facilities) Could it be "others" watching you to make sure you do the right things? Just do the right damn thing and be firm, fait, and consistent. Great pointers.

You said one thing that really struck me. You aren't in court to win the case. Early in my career I watched an excellent investigator throw away a slam dunk conviction by thinking he could outsmart the defense attorney. All he had to do was answer the questions, say "I don't know" when he didn't know, and the defendant was going down. He thought he could give cute answers on cross, ended up tied in knots, and made the jury think he was a perjurer. The guilty defendant skated. I testified in about 50 felony cases, and I always remembered that.

I was told to NEVER lie by a salty old patrol sergeant when I was a rookie in 1968. That was the best career advise I ever got and while I passed it along when I was an FTO, sergeant, lieutenant and captain, not everyone listened. Those who did made out okay, those who lied usually got fired.

The be fair thing is critical. It will get you respect in a profession where there is little. My father just retired after 33 years and he always told me that his approach was to always be firm, but fair, to everyone he interacted with. He was well known amongst the local crimnal populace but was almost universally treated with respect whereas other officers never got that treatment, because the people knew he wasn't going to screw around with them.

GREAT advice 401! A buddy of mine had a promising career as an under-cover detective. He used the department's gas card to fill up his boat. He claimed that he mixed up his card with the department's. An aggressive and politically motivated assistant DA (who did not like my friend) ended up putting him in the county jail for about a year. Very sad and completely avoidable.
