We were 'glamping' and nomads before we knew 😳 it was a thing! 😂😂😂 House burned so son and i, with dog & a cat hit the road in a car. Thankfully had a Natl Park pass. We hit thrift stores and picked up all kinds of camp gear along oyr travels. We even picked up a couple hugh canvas tents along the way. Rain, snow and extreme heat - we were comfy and had a great time. My son is now in his 40s and still camps & backpacks. He was a couple weeks old his 1st camp trip. He did same with his daughter. Have fun everyone. The easiest way to camp is don't worry about how others camp & glamp - just do it & enjoy the experiences! ☺

Great video. We are a family of 8 who love to camp. I hate bins though. I’ve learned a large plastic Sterilite drawer system works better. In the top drawer, we keep our kitchen stuff, the middle drawer is misc (like meds, bug spray, clothes lines, lights, etc). Our bottom drawer is 8 each of water shoes, swimsuits, and quick drying towels. When we arrive at our campsite, we just take out each drawer, pick up the whole system, move it close to the picnic table, and put the drawers back in. I can then prep food on the top on a cutting board like a counter. All my kitchen stuff is within each reach underneath. Whenever we leave our site, we just pick it up and load it back into our trunk. No rummaging for things at the bottom of a bin. We’ve camped across the country and this has been the best system for having a new campsite every few days.

We also learned that a 12 person tent does not work. Way too big for the footprint of national parks. At 8 people, you move to two 6 people tents. No one wants to try to fall asleep while 7 others roll around on vinyl. Just advice for other large families out there.

I’ve got camping gear for all types of camping. No matter how I camp, the most important thing to me is being organized and having a system. An absolute must include, for me, is a roll of duct tape! (broken bones, large bleeding wounds, etc) I do advise against using it directly on skin . Instead use a section of the duct tape and sticky to sticky then wrap around as needed! You get a tight wrap with the tape actually adhering to itself rather than skin! Simply pull out the length necessary and double it back on itself as needed. Also, Fire starter: cotton balls with a touch of Vaseline (kept in a ziplock baggie) and flint and steel!

We Premake our meals such as chili,, hamburger helper, and stew and freeze it in the deepfreeze,,, the day of we take it and put it into coolers with block ice we make out of 2 litre plastic bottles,,, saves ALOT of heartache for worrying about ice!!! Lasts a week or so!!!!!

Yes frozen meals are the way to go 100%. You can even get inspiration from "dump meal" style things. Typically people pack the meals in gallon freezer bags and put them in crock pot or pressure cooker, but you can simmer them in a pot just as well.

Great tip about where the zipper is located on your sleeping bag. I honestly didn't know you could get sleeping bags with zippers on different sides. I always thought the zipper was in the same place for all sleeping bags. Learned something new today. A fire starter trick that I like to use is petroleum jelly and cotton balls. I usually take a zipper bag, put a blob of petroleum jelly in the bag, and then throw in some cotton balls. I then just "massage" the bag coating the cotton balls. A little petroleum jelly will coat a lot of cotton balls. My #1 must-have in my first aid kit is burn cream (a really GOOD burn cream). Burn cream saved my arm and camping trip one time and I won't camp without it.

Yes!!! Burn cream is a must. My 6yo put his hand on the cooking grate as it was cooling. I brought a first aid kit and we were able to "ice" and bandage his blisters at a remote location. 😢 The next year I sliced open my finger while washing dishes in the basin. Ugh! So awful. Always carry a first aid kit with basic tools/equipment even if you have to make your own.

I definitely need to invest in storage bins. My tent camping experience has been messy, with crap all over the place in the car and not remembering what I packed or didn't pack. One trip, I took too much, the next, I decided to cut it down but didn't take enough. I just hated scavenging around in the car to see what I packed or forgot.

Yeah having the bins really makes it much easier for sure. 😊 This way you always know that say something for cooking must be in the cooking bin, and so on. We got ours at Home Depot! 🤙🏽

My buddys when they come camping then they throw a bunch of garbage bags full of their stuff and then say I spent to much when I get a yeti cooler and then some bins for my gear . Then they complain the next day that they had shit sleeps , hungry , didn’t bring enough water etc lol

Tip re: light attracting bugs... Use s red bulb to do your tasks if firelight isn't feasible. I've found best results using a red light off my tailgate while a blue/white lantern is hung up a number of paces away from from the work area.

I haven't finished the video but in addition to regular garbage bags I would recommend packing a few contractor bag's. Especially if you have a ... potty station. The frozen water bottle idea is completely genius!!! Also for bugs if you can deal with and especially 30 minutes before bed set out red lights they don't attract bugs as much due to the different wave length.

We use dryer lint mixed with a little bees wax and put them in egg cartons then you just break off a part of the carton and light it

Great info guys My wife also came up with camping totes like the ones you have. One thing that helps the cooler is precooling the nite before. We have a 55 quart lifetime and it stays cold for days!!!!!!

The most important thing with camping is PREPARATION. Decide WHERE, WHEN and WHAT TYPE of camping you want to do, before you consider the gear you need, then RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! Love my cot and self inflating sleeping pad. Can place all my stuff under the cot which keeps the area organized. I have an 8 person tent with over 6 foot height. Can put zero gravity chair and table in the cot as well as potty.LUCI LIGHTS ARE MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! Also new toy is Portable Propane Gas Fire Pit which I saw someone had at a campground. Can put that under the canopy when the weather is crappy. Thermacel for mosquito repellent. Not cheap but effective.

I find it easy to use a butane torch for lighting charcoal or a campfire.The ones that fit right onto a can of butane. I got the idea when I was a Chef. We used them for desserts and to light chafing dishes. The torch itself would fit in the palm of your hand. One click. Spark, fire, easy, clean.

I just found your channel yesterday and love your videos. I'm car camping with my dog in a couple weeks for 2 weeks and your videos have really helped with the camping parts! Plus you all are such a cute couple..I wanted to also add a lot of vehicles, especially newer ones come with an emergency kit..usually basic first aid but has an emergency reflective blanket etc too..i recommend adding benadryll type med too..i had an allergic reaction after being bit and it really helped.then just add to it like you said for the more serious situation. Dryer lint is a great fire starter. Shredded jute is great too. My personal favorite is duct tape, when you tightly roll it into what looks like a little cigarette, it holds its ember for so long.

A lot of people bring very small tents. I do a lot of backpacking and my backpacking tents are not the same as my car camping tents. I like my 8-person tent for car camping, even when camping alone. I use a queen size inflatable mattress. Full comfort for the car camping. For the price of a week in a budget hotel, you can get set up with gear that will last for decades. After that, your adventures cost 5 to 20 bucks per day for accommodations. Campgrounds have showers, flush toilets, and everything you need. A week long vacation for 100 bucks. Even less if you go to state or blm land that costs nothing. If you have the right gear it is extremely comfortable. Taking some of the younger grandkids next week to a state park that has showers and flush toilets. 12 bucks per night, peak season cost.

Absolutely correct about tent size. A four person tent provides enough space to cram four people inside to sleep, but provides little else. If you encounter great weather throughout your trip, sleeping is all you might use your tent for. However, if the weather turns bad and it pours rain for 16 hours, four people in a four person tent is not going to be fun. Always nice to have the extra space for comfortably changing clothes, especially if swimming is on your agenda, and there's always things that you need to store and keep dry.

Yes! I have an eight person tent with steel poles. It's heavy, but the poles don't break like the fiberglass ones. That thing took Gale force winds head on and was just fine

If you are around birch trees, peel off the thin bark, it will light up even when wet! Birch bark is amazing.

I break things down to rooms tents are your bedroom and sometime living room Outside, living room Kitchen ,what you need to cook and eat with. Try not to use a single use item. Like that French press,just saying. I also freeze food and heat it up at camp.Just ho down the frozen food section and you'll get lots of ideas. You can freeze mashed potatoes but not boiled potatoes.

Usually out here by us each campsite at actually campgrounds come with a bear box to put your food and cooler. If you’re backpacking or on blm land or whatever you kind of have to be more creative and just do what you can. Bear containers, hanging stuff from trees, I guess your car is better than nothing sometimes but you have to be careful because we’ve seen bears rip cars apart to get at food. Depends on your environment too, if there aren’t any bears you don’t have to worry as much haha

Coffee is definitely a must-have while camping. We moved from using a french press to the aeropress - very fast, great coffee, and practically no cleanup other than a quick rinse! Not to mention lightweight and not easily broken. Have you given that a try?

Haven’t tried it! Was under the impression that it didn’t make much coffee at one time and was more for like a solo trip! But I’ve heard many people say they like it 😊

@@WhereWeWild Sounds like a good video! For anything more than making coffee for maybe two people, the Aeropress probably isn't that great compared to something that can do more at a time. Works good in my case, on top of the ease of cleanup. Either way is great though, as long as you get your coffee in you! ☕

A lot depends on how and where you are camping. In a state or national camping area with restrooms, picnic tables, fire rings and a grill, you may not need some of the items mentioned. When back packing, many items mentioned are impossible to carry. However, two items not mentioned is a tarp to put UNDER the tent. Possibly another tarp to string up to have shade or help protect the tent itself. The other thing is a firearm. I don't care what anyone thinks, there are a lot of dangerous animals out there and the most dangerous of all is other people.

For those who don’t know. What tents call a person is the space for just under 6 foot by 20-22 inches wide. Recently with the addition of the 25” sleeping pads some tents have made it for 25 inches as opposed to 20-22…. And there is no extra room. So if you are car camping you can go nuts with the size. I have a hammock, a trekking pole single, a self standing single & double and a six person tent. Which do you think I take car camping???

For fires- Believe it or not you can use swimming pool shock with at least 56% calcium hypochlorite and DOT3 brake fluid as a fire starter. It’s a volatile chemical reaction that makes a matchless flame. Flammable but NOT explosive.

When it comes to coffee we formerly used an old school aluminum percolator that made good coffee, but we came across a stainless Steel mesh pour over funnel that is great! Doesn’t the burning sage smell like weed?

Bugs in your light. I hate that, most of all, in your headlamp!! Now it's not fool proof, but it helps. Yellow Saran wrap. 2, 3 or 4 warps "depending how bright your light is" around your "battery" operated lamp or headlamp and it will help to minimize the bugs.

It was also over 100 degrees! 🥵😂 It’s always harder to shoot outside because you can’t control the environment, sound and lighting are usually the main issues. We got it done though 😊🤙🏽

A note on the sleeping bags as I just got to that part in the video. The rating on those is to keep you alive, not for comfort. If you have a 0 degree sleeping bag, that means you likely won't freeze to death if it gets to 0 degrees. Comfort ratings tend to be 10-20 degrees higher than the bag is rated for.

Absolutely the pillows we have you can take up to 6 hours to blow up, but that’s the limit. If you can’t get it done in 6 hours you have to start all over again which is very frustrating. Also, if you want to blow up your sweater or jacket that’s totally doable, but only if they are a size medium or smaller.

I'm weird, I like to start out with my zipper facing up to the sky and down the center of my body cause I am a crazy sleeper, so when the zipper is on the side to start, I always manage to twist and turn and the zipper ends up under me and I can't get to it and I panic cause I start feeling claustrophobic trying to get un-stuck and un-twisted up ... and multiply that by 2 or 3 times a night to wake up and use bathroom lol ... so with the zipper on top, works best for me 😂🤷‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Pray the campgrounds have clean bathrooms! 🙏🏽😃😂 That’s never the case is it, would be sweet though! Hahaha it all depends on the situation and how far out there you are. Backpacking it’s basically just bringing your little shovel to dig a small hole and burry it, and not leave any garage like your toilet paper behind. Bagging it and getting it to a garbage can. Definitely not fun haha but that’s the game. Always try to leave no trace. A clever way at say a car camping campground with no bathroom available is to bring a bucket, line it with a garbage bag, and cut open a pool noodle to form around the rim of the bucket for comfort. You can even put that into a camp shower or changing tent for more privacy. 🤙🏽

Awe really, so sorry to hear that! I hope you had a little fun at least! 😢 Just the way it goes sometimes unfortunately in the outdoors ya know, Mother Nature is always in charge. Couple years ago we had this awesome trip planned in the Sierras, and we drove alllllll the way up there maybe 4-5 hours, just to be told all the campgrounds were closing down due to fires, and the whole area was being evacuated. So we had no choice but to just turn around and drive another 4-5 hours back home. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

I am 6' tall and my nieces son and I can sleep in a two man tent with two twin air mattresses. In the winter months, I use a Wool Blend Blanket inside my sleeping bag. I am cold natured. I would never use an inflatable pillow. A Travel pillow doesn't take up that much room.

Hmmm that’s a tricky one, tough to recommend a specific tent for you. There are a bunch of factors as to which one will be best for you personally ya know? Do you need a big family tent or a 1 man backpacking tent, does it have to be lightweight to hike in with or can you pack it in the car, how much money do you want to spend on it… stuff like that. They have ratings for how waterproof they claim to be, and you can even buy waterproofing spray to hit any tent with if you want. Check out this article on waterproof tents, it might give you some ideas and more information about them then I will be able to convey through this comment section. I have a 12 man tent, I call it the circus tent lol Lots of room if the grand kids wanna sleep over with grandma I have lots of room to store all my stuff and lots of times everyone else's stuff. there's enough room for 2 queen beds and a small table and chairs. I wouldn't go back to a smaller one.

I’m sorry we don’t have any experience with that specific situation, but sounds like you’ll really have to get creative and make the most out of whatever space you do have. Narrowing things down to your family’s absolute bare essentials. A roof rack for the car might help free up some space. Also see if there are any specific videos on this, camping space saving tips, or camping packing a small car, or light weight camping and backpacking gear. I know the bins are super helpful for us. It will take some trial and error, but I’m sure it can be done! And hey if all else fails you could always rent or borrow a bigger vehicle for your trip. Good luck! Sorry we didn’t have more specific ideas for you!

Hi Nicole! We are also a family of 6. A 13 year old 4, 3, and almost 2. We are planning to get a heavy duty hitch mount cargo carrier for the back of our car. We are minimalist and are going to really try and keep it as simple as can be. We also use a mini pack and play for 2 year old and a regular sized one for our 3 year old (he is a runner and escapee) so it's vital we know where he's at all times. We fit in 2 queen air mattresses and the pack and plays at the foot of our beds in the tent. We have an 8 person Coleman tent with a screened in porch to keep the littles safely in and not immediately exposed to the outdoors while we wait to get our shoes on and stuff. And then open the netting to go out.

I have a Fiat Abarth that my son and I take camping so I have purchased compact everything. Chairs, sleeping mats, collapsible dishes. I use every space in the car, including side door pockets, glove box and hang stuff on backs of the seats. Also we use Amazon vacuum bags for clothes and bedding and sit on our pillows in the car. We usually get camp set up and then go get groceries and ice. I feel ya.
