The forge we had in our high school shop class had a damaged gas valve, and we (the students) didn't know that having the handle in line with the pipe was "on" and crosswise was "off". So we spent about ten minutes turning the valve every which way while tossing flaming paper into the forge. Somehow we managed to not light the forge during that time while simultaneously putting a surprising amount of gas into the area around it. Once it DID light however... let's just say there was a group of lightly singed shop rats who learned an important lesson about gas safety.

I would be curious what it would look like if you took some metal out of the forge and stuck it in a power hammer or beat it with a hammer. I wonder how much elasticity it would have
