Washington State man here: THANK YOU. I LOVE my State. I have lived in Washington most of my life, but I have worked in and lived in Cali, Texas (Texas rules) Ohio, PA, AZ, and a few others. Washington State remain my favorite, and I'd rather live in WA then anywhere else in the world. It has everything I like: rain, trees, mountain, hills, valleys, lakes, large rural sections, national forests, a coast, and relatively relaxed gun laws for a blue state. So I love WA. But our flag makes me cringe. A seal is meant to be on printed pieces of paper where it can be seen and read. Not a flag, where it can't. Further, if you have to state what you're representing on your flag, your representation has failed. And, for that matter, most of the flag is just a solid color. Finally, since these state seal flags aren't distinctive or original, they're boring, and so no one ever sees them, and they inspire no state pride. WA deserves a better flag.

The stars in the in middle represent the other flags that have "flown" over Arkansas. Arkansas was a Spanish colony, then French, then British (the last two might be backwards), and then it switched hands between those nations several times before the LA purchase. Unfortunately, a fourth flag briefly flew over our state, hence the fourth star. I honestly think it should inverse. Three stars on top, one hard lesson on the bottom.

the 8th star on the alaskan flag is not for the "future of alaska." that star is actually Polaris (the North Star) which can be located in the sky if you draw an extended line after connecting the two stars that form the top right and bottom right of the dipper. Polaris indicates north.. maybe the alaskans wanted it on there because if you follow the north star, you might end up in alaska. thank you and good night

As a Californian, I feel the same about our flag. A picture of a strange looking bear when everything about our state is so much more interesting then this lone bear species. Our flag should reflect a symbol of the California Gold Rush of 1848 which started the mass migration of people to the state. Our State Motto is "Eureka!" (Greek for "I Have Found It") referring to the discovery of gold during the gold rush. State Nickname: Golden State. State Flower: Golden Poppy which grows in abundance in certain areas. Seems like it would be pretty cohesive to have the flag follow the same theme. That bear is a bore. lol.

Hawai‘i’s flag is designed like that because King Kamehameha I was given a Union Jack as a gift and he flew it at his palace. He also flew a U.S. flag later to symbolize friendly relations with the U.S., someone told him that flying another country’s flag might make people think they are a colony of said country (foreshadowing I guess) he had the current flag designed to represent both the U.K. and U.S., and of course the amount of main islands.

The most frustrating thing about North Dakota's flag is that the state is one of only 18 to have a coat of arms, and unlike most other states, it's coat of arms is actually awesome. It's a yellow field with a green bend (diagonal line), with three yellow stars in the bend and a green fleur-de-lis underneath the bend. And unlike other coat of arms that are displayed on shields, North Dakota's is on an arrowhead!
