I'm learning pole vault as a senior and my school hasn't had it in 15+ years. I don't have the proper facilities, but I have a pole, my own homemade box, the best coaches and support and opportunities I could ask for, and a hell of a lot of patience and work ethic (first one in the weight room, last one out. Just did 250 pushups 220 pullups 300 dumbbell raises on saturday :)). I'll be damned if I can't get at least 12' to help my team at conference! Thanks for the vid!

Thank you! From the video, you look like a very successful pole vaulter and I hope the season treats you well, and you stay uninjured. I had been having ankle problems since training over the summer. Turns out, I broke my ankle in several places and it healed incorrectly, all the while I was still running. The doctors had to re-break the bones unless I went into surgery. I will definitely follow your advice, and I cannot wait to take up this sport. It's really inspirational to me thus far.

All good... I am a firm believer in using "straight pole" techniques, i.e. plants, driving knee, swings, etc. to develop good & proper form. Both me & my teammate in H.S. were State medal winners, and my teammate in college won a Olympic Gold medal, using these same practice approaches. If you want to watch really beautiful technique, check-out Kjell Isaaksen's World Record jump of 18' 2" in 1968 video... just perfect. Go BIG!

Hey! this is Sam, the athlete from the vid. Soo much goes into vaulting outside of the vaulting. If your injury is upper body related, work on getting your lower body in shape, i would not recomend to much squatting though. You, being a long distance runner probably have a lower body injury(sorry to hear about that btw) and i can tell you how invaluable good basic gymnastic strength is in the PV. those Swing ups and other such bar drills put you ahead of the game IF YOU WILL DO THEM.

great sport, but I have to ask, who was the guy that said "hey Johnny, why don't you take this here pole and run as fast as you can, then jam it into that there pit...now lets put a bar 5 metres in the air and you're gonna fling yourself over it. cause that guy was crazy.

My school doesn't do the Pole Vault, so we had our Javelin thrower do it for a dual meet and he won in 9 feet I think.

I'm 18 years old and want to do this! I have never done athletics (properly) before, any suggestion? I'm a bit overweight (5kg), but can handle workout, I'm doing about 100+ abs everyday, jumping rope and some other excercises... I am going tomorrow to see the athletics team I'm not sure if they have the equipment, but in few months I'm moving to college (I will have the chance to do it there).

I am a cross country runner and rather than compete in long distance track events, I thought about taking up pole vaulting. I would start it next year's season, because I have a nasty injury that led to me not being able to participate for this season, but is there any way for me to prep for the upcoming season without actually starting the sport. And, I will be 15 going on 16 by the time I would compete for my school. Is that an age too late to pick up the sport?

im in ninth grade and vault in eighth grade i had pretty much no coaching AT ALL and got higher by my own accord.. this year i realized everything from 8th grade was WRONG and all of my form SUCKS i cant seem to plant with arms out (i ride the pole instead of pushing off) i cant seem to get vertical and can'tturn around because the form i have now prevents me from doing so.... soooo what should i do???

Your form is pretty bad, your left arm collapses into your body which yanks you back and takes away so much of your momentum. And also try to get more parallel with your pole.
@44cmitchell10 жыл бұрын
DO NOT, EVER!, dive into the takeoff like that. You want to rise up not push yourself underneath the pole.
@chrishardy64718 жыл бұрын
+Colton Mitchell he was just doing one arm jumps, it just warms up your step and jump, the pole barely does anything for those. Obviously he knows not to do that in an actual jump.
@44cmitchell8 жыл бұрын
no clue why you are reviving something from 2 years ago, but I was actually referring to his 5 step jumps. The one armed take offs were pretty great actually, good flow and pole movement.
