This week we sit down with Dads to find out what it means to be a good dad. All of us are affected by our father. Maybe he wasn't there, maybe he was there too much. What did your parents do right and what did they do wrong?
Filmmaker Corbyn Tyson explores what it means to be a good dad. This is a series that looks at what it means to be a father today and the role our dads played in our lives.

I honestly could not have asked for a better farther than the one good blessed me with. He's a father to nine children, works hard to provide for all of us and foster our dreams, stays connected to us, and is deeply rooted in Christ. I just love him so much.

I don't see the importance of fatherhood. I always wondered what's the importance of fathers in a child's life. I can see why mothers are important. Women are socially and biologically programmed to be parents much more strongly than men are. Mothers are the ones that produce milk to feed to their babies. Also, mothers are the ones that are usually in charge of their babies, and they assume that role early on. Also, women have "maternal instinct", while men don't have anything like that. And also, children usually spend a lot more time with their mothers than they do with their fathers, and during that time, the mothers are usually taking care of the children. Also, most animals in this world are only taken care by their mothers and they don't have their fathers around at all. So why are human fathers important? It seems that a child can grow up without a father, and still turn out ok.

When my dad was growing up, he said his father was an idiot. His father hit him, swore at him and did worse too. His dad died when he was 12. My dad had then decided that he would be a different type of father. A loving caring one, who did not beat his kids and treated them like little angels. I am glad he is a father just like he said he wanted to be. I love my dad, for supporting me and never giving up on us and also for the love and devotion you put into the role of being a father, I love you daddy x

I can relate so much to the man in the blue collared shirt so much . Having your father pass away and not even having one really puts a void in your heart. But after having a son yourself you can fill yourself feeling so much better. Like the hole in your life is actually being filled.

my dad literally lived 5 minutes away from me almost my whole life and never called me once. He brought me flowers for my 13th birthday but wouldnt have know about it if i hadnt told him anything a few days before. its the only time he's ever told me happy birthday. when me and my sister would try to go visit him he would somehow find a reason to have to go out of town or to the store, even when we called before the short walk over and he was home. when i graduated high school he went into a big spill about wanting to help me in whatever way he could. Well a couple years later I asked for help getting a car and he heavily procrastinated about it. He left a voicemail on my phone by mistake talking about me and my sister and how we only talk to him when we need something and all kind of bad stuff about us. I havent spoken to him since. I have no reason to because I don't need him for anything.

***** I didn't put every detail of all of our encounters on here. I just put one example. I was just making a point. There have been plenty of times when I went to visit him just to and he was all of a sudden "busy" or "went to the store". No one should have to chase their father for a relationship, regardless of the situation. So don't come on my post snapping at me like you know everything about my life ok? That's whats wrong with people now, making stupid assumptions after reading a couple of sentences I wrote. And BTW you're a jerk. Get it together.

My dad is a great, wise man and I've been very lucky. I've made mistakes too but I've learned from them and hopefully can pass this advice on to my son/daughter... I accept parenting isn't easy and this won't come with a handbook but I am ready... 7 months until life begins :)

Hearing the men in this video makes me feel depressed. Depression is something that I'm actually struggling with right now and it doesn't help that I hide it with a smile and my parents say, " I had it worse" or "It happens to everybody." It does. But I needed their support. I'm sixteen and I am grateful for what they have taught me when they were actually there so that when I grow up I learn and experience.

There is instruction on how to be a great father, it is the Word of God. I was blessed with a Father who was not afraid to cry in front of me. Never abused me or my family. Provided for me and yet was transparent with his faults. My dad is not perfect but he showed me who was, God in heaven. I know that my life has been enriched by my dad and I cannot wait to love my own children. Thanks for the video and mad respect to the guys in this video for stepping up and being fathers or wanting to be fathers and sharing their personal lives with us.

My dad was a wonderful man but he died when I was 4 in part because he didn't take good enough care of himself. Gentlemen if you have kids, you owe it to them to take reasonable steps to be around as long as possible. If you smoke, please give your best effort to quitting or at least cutting way back. If you drink more than a few drinks a week please think about cutting back and if someone who loves you thinks you have a drinking problem, please quit. See a doctor at least once a year, get your tests. Take your blood pressure medication. Exercise. Do the basic things so that your child won't ever have to say "Why didn't he love me enough to try harder to stick around?"

It is such a shame when fathers are not there in their children lives. I am not talking the mothers who are difficult and prevent the relationship between the father and children. I am talking about those men, who choose to abandon their children, those men who choose to commit adultery, those men who choose to put their own selfish desires before the emotional well being of their children

I was always my dad's favorite daughter, he used to Pat my head and tell me that he loves me. He used to help me with homework, and give me life lessons that stick with me until today. Unfortunately, he was an ill man, one who always struggled to be a good dad, a good husband, a good friend and a good doctor despite his poor health. When he became very ill, I was the only one who could take care of him, while my mom had to work to support us and my siblings studied far from home, so I cooked his meals, and watched TV with him during the long days he had to spend laying on the bed, that made us closer than ever. Eventually, after many sleepless nights throwing up, after months of unbearable pain, after suffering very much, he died in 2013 at the age of 43, leaving 11 years old me and my family, to later discover I have the same kind of illness as he did. Dad, you're in my heart, you are my most beloved one. I hope you're in paradise now

My dad left when I was 7 due to alcohol problems, didn't seem him for about a year and a half. He left at a important time of my childhood, I didn't have a dad to look up to, lucky I had my older brother. My step dad came when I was about 9, his like a dad to me. I only see my dad about 3 times a year as he moved far away, but we talk regularly which is good, he hasn't drank alcohol for 4 years now which is amazing! This video really helped me in a funny sort of way, that's guys!

My mother has NPD and my dad is an enabler. I am an identical twin, but my brother was always the golden child. My older sister, who is 33, still lives at home and my brother and sister are brainwashed by my parents. I'm the outcast in the family because I stood up for myself and didn't allow myself to be emotionally abused anymore. I will not allow myself to become my father. Surround yourselves around positive people. Get the toxic individuals out of your life. It's a horrible situation that not many people know about because my family hides it well. Knowing what I know now, I see how bad my parents were growing up. I'm so grateful I got help and noticed the signs.

fazal ihtisham Thanks, man. I thought I was going nuts and found others who went through similar things with me. It's creepy. In a wedding photo on our wedding day, the whole family and extended family gathered for a giant group photo. EVERYONE was excited and hands in the air and smiling. The ONLY person not smiling and sitting there with a scowl on her face was my mother. It's disturbing. It wasn't about her, so she didn't care. Makes me sick.

I have the opposite. My dad is the Narcissist and my mom the co-dependent puppet. Growing up I felt bad for her because my dad could be so domineering and degrading to her and she often told me how her "big" brother-she was taller than him-beat her up. So as I was empathizing for her, she was standing over watching and allowing my dad to physically and mentally abuse ME! Only prayer can heal wounds that form that deep!

God, I totally relate. Every Christmas, every birthday, any time it wasn't centered around him, it was his mission to make everyone miserable and uncomfortable. Any time you tried to tell a story or vent about something, he would twist it to be about him. Ugh. Luckily we all woke up after his lies came crashing down in an avalanche.

My father and my mom seperated pretty much one week after I was born, and after one year he left me and my brother to go to Thailand to live there with my stepmother and start a new family. Me and my brother didn't see him for 5 years, but my mom met her ex boyfriend from high school and now they've been married for 10 years. My mom and my stepfather was meant to be together, and I can tell he's the best father I could ever had. :) I still see my dad, but only once a year. He gave me two beautiful half sisters and my stepmom is one of my best friends. Everything turned out well at the end.. :)

My dad has never been perfect, but I’ll always be proud he is my father, and not that man, the man who convinced my mother he loved, and yet found reasons to argue with her believing that no one would hear them at night, the man who called himself my stepdad, and yet was never much of a dad to even his own kids, the man who cheated on my mother with some other woman, up and left when called out on it, only to take what should have been our inheritance from our mother when she died in Germany at Christmas, simply because thet hadn’t finalized divorce papers, (as far as I’m aware,) at that point in time, a fact kept from our father and us for over a year after Mum died by her own father and her sisters, who’d loved having my older sister over for dinner and such, but never once requested to see me or my younger sister, which shows just how little they cared about us, since I’m fairly certain they only stayed in contact with my older sister due to her resemblance to our mother, another thing is that Richard Drinkwater, my mother’s old man, took over a year to arrange a damn tombstone to mark my mother’s passing, when the damn cremation was at the beginning of 2018. Despite everything my father cares about us more than they ever did.

Unfortunately, I lost my father at a very young age. I don't have too many memories of him but will admit he loved his children. I, For the most part, I've done a good job up to this point in my life. Growing up without a father has its negative and positive effects. As a society, we're often reminded of the negative impact of not having your father around daily. The positive results it had on me was creating a strong will to give my children everything I lacked growing up. I encourage all fathers to use your hurt growing up as fuel to have a significant impact on your children's lives. #Peace and Love

My father was my best friend, guardian, protector, teacher, and role model. He was a mistake-making man who put on his cover-alls one leg at a time. Glen was an obedient son of God, a soul-hungry student of life, of religious studies, and a wrench-turning inventor. Glen-O was an oatmeal eating, elk hunting adventurer who bought roses for his daughters when they were born, and who wept when he found out I took a dip of Skoal. When I lost him at the age of 12, my heart broke, and I was angry with him and God for 30 years. I miss him every day of my life. He is my hero and for all that he did and didn't do, I hope that I can be half the man he is.

It hurts to know that he has not only caused me pain but watching my siblings grow up not being able to understand the actions of one man and why he could not be what we needed him to be. Growing up fatherless was hard, if you are fortunate enough to grow up in a healthy two parent household I hope you truly appreciate everything they do for you.

It is difficult to be an ideal father in these days and still be able to raise the resources to meet the family needs. It is even more difficult in the African context where the extended family members still look up to the same person for support. But with a good mother (your wife) by your side, you can breed fantastic children with awesome characteristics and success..

Up until about two years ago, my dad had been around, but it was like he wasn't. He didn't really interact with us, he would just sit there and fall asleep and he never tried to engage my brother or me in conversation. He didn't really seem to care about what we were doing. When we were younger, he seemed more engaged, but not to the extent that a good dad who truly cares about his children should be. But I found out that he'd been having an affair with several women online and that he had been doing things online, like pornography. I was disgusted when I found out that a man that I thought was supposed to help me out in times of need was completely detached from our family and had never put in an effort to change. Even after my parents divorced, he tried to send me letters and things to say he was sorry and that he loved me. But that was all they said. He never acknowledged the things he had done wrong. I don't think he truly understands how he hurt our family by all of his deception. He basically tossed away all relations he had for something meaningless. To this day, he has showed no sign of change or willingness to do so. I feel like our family is better off for not having in our lives anymore, but I feel kind of guilty for feeling that way. I don't know if I should try to repair a relationship that was never really there, or if I should just accept that it happened and move on with my life. I believe that if he doesn't try to put in an effort to change, there is no place for him in my life. I wish I could have grown up with a father who had truly cared for me and had inspired me.

Shiro-Matsuri42 Yup me too.....but I also wish I had a mother that was around too. Dad is around but doesn't give a crap and I have never had a loving relationship with any of my "parents". There is no love you, no hugs, no nice comments, nothing but complaining and making you seem like a slave and the worst person in the world. I always envy those with good parents.....I still dream whenever I see a happy family together. It sucks when you yourself had to bring yourself up....instill morals within yourself and be your own parents. To have no love is the worst thing possible and I do not wish it for anyone......you really slowly die. Love is life......

About a year ago i found out that my dad had a affair with a lady he met while on holiday in Europe with my mother. He would met her in Dubai (halfway for both parties) and be wither her and tell my brother and I that he was going on a business trip....this carried on for 5 months during this time his personality changed, he began cursing at me and even hit me all while my mum was tell me that i was winding him up when all i really wanted him to say was sorry....he ruined 20 years of being a good dad and husband for one year of complete disregard for his family. From this i now have extreme anxiety, depression and a complete lack of trust in any man in my life and you know what its sad, that after 20 years of having a dad i can only remember the last year of hell with him...if i had seen this video 2 years ago I'm sure my comment would be a lot different.

My heart goes out to you. I will be praying for you. Try to forgive your dad. It's not easy but first start by studying forgiveness. Anxiety and depression will grip your life if you dont forgive. I know from experience. Take care young lady.

Im a father and husband, Im 31. Let me give you some hard life advice. If you let 1 or 2 single events in your life define you, you will simply become a loser. EVERYONE that becomes successful, has overcome that tragedy. In closing, get over it, “man up” or “lady up” in your case. No one is going to ask you or give you a free pass to be a loser, you are only going to damage yourself and others around you. Its YOUR duty to be a good addition to society, if not, then your wasting air.

I hope, so much, that in the future if I raise a family I become the best father to my children and awesome husband to my wife. Even though I'm far from that point, I'm afraid of being too distant from them.

Love my dad but he was not a good father, he's selfish, used to drink heavily, is manipulative, he's better now he's old but he damaged who I became...sometimes it's best not growing up with a father if it's going to influence you to the point where it makes you dysfunctional, it's very confusing for a child or adult loving a parent who is very bad for them.

fatherhood isnt just being a provider. fathers disciplines, teach them how to be independent and responsible, show and teach your daughters how a man suppose to treat her and teach your son how to treat women.

Dads are very important and I personally feel like theres not much praise directed towards fathers at all and although there's a few great ones we dont really know where they are and the media puts too much attention on single parenting and the only mom and dad teams we see are celebrities. The media hardly even acknowledge single dad's at all. Were kinda low on dads and fatherhood experiences and overall just men and their experiences on life and their take. I would love to see more men open up about that. Most people think only women can express themselves in some cases everyone boots out the men on certain topics especially in parenting.

I hate my Dad. Dads are rude, horrible, mean and the ones who mostly don't care about you. To me, dads are only here because of my mum. Not to protect me, not to act like a dad, not to cheer me on with any sports, not to inspire me, not anything....only shouts, yells, swearing, all the bad stuff

Dads in general are not all those terrible things. Some fathers have different issues they need to personally deal with. Men are constantly put up to this standard that we can't express emotions, because we need to be a rock. The foundation for the stability of the family. Sometimes aggression and violence is the only way to let it out. I know my father hasn't always been the best dad, but he tries. He knows he has messed up, but his effort is what counts.
