Early on he said something to the tune of, "I had a biblical opinion and then my experience changed my view of the Bible." Why, why, why, do people interpret the bible based on their experiences?!?! Please, interpret your experiences based on the bible.

Thanks for this discussion. Really helpful. As a former student of Con in Australia, and as someone who has a shared story of divorce, i understand this being on the outer of 'evangelical culture'. I'm thankful for this really helpful chat. I have found the work of Stone-Brewer and Keener really helpful on this. Thanks.

I wish Preston had pressed this guy more. Some pretty bad, even dangerous arguments here, that seem to promote this idea that it’s ok to give up on marriage when every single marriage, even Christian ones will experience hard times. The end…where he claims both are at fault when a person has an affair…made my blood boil. That has no basis in scripture, and is common rhetoric pushed on women for not “pleasing” their husbands enough after childbirth, giving them free reign to watch porn or cheat. Just displeased that this guy spewed his very unbiblical views on marriage for an hour and had very little challenge in response. Hope it gets addressed in a future episode.

Dr. Campbell!! I loved the time I had in yours and Dr. Jipp’s small group. You were a huge influence in my time in seminary. I hope you’re still crushing some jazz in Sydney.

Very helpful! Marriage is important to Jesus and we should honor that to the highest degree. However, His desire to see us happy, at peace, and reaching our full potential in Him and in His love are also important. He wants us to have the opportunity to experience the love of a “good” marriage. There could be any number of “reasons” for a possible divorce. I have to believe that a genuine, prayerful, Christian heart will be able to discern well. I also believe Jesus knows the heart and will forgive the choice to dissolve the marriage. Your personal feelings shared are true indeed. I think God likes that we question and explore these topics too because it’s an opportunity for us to see His love for us, remembering that with fear it’s difficult to see and feel God. Yet, it’s also a topic to be careful of not leaning on our own understanding. Thank you for the very honest, real, and reliable context once again Con.

I listened to this podcast in it's entirety...and while I agree that grace should be extended to all sin, I think Dr Constantine's argument might have been to vague in some areas. There are countless reasons to end a marriage that seem "logical" - they get called unreconcilable differences a lot of the time. But frankly I think it's bullshit. We can basically make the bible mean whatever we want it to... We could say that since peoplw generally don't partake in arranged marriages anymore that it is ok to have sex outside of that context... And if divorce is ok, then we shouldn't care really if people live together before theyre married to see if it'll work out. I agree that there are legitimate reasons to end a marriage, such as abuse or sexual immorality...but if you jump ship just because you "feel sad" then maybe you're the problem. I don't for sure though, maybe my opinion will change later on but the conversation left me more confused than anything else.

Grace and Peace Think of it like this, the only reason to divorce is a woman's fornication before marriage. So now if divorce takes place for another reason like adultery, fighting or so on, if you turn and decide, I want to marry another, once you marry another you are an adulteress or adulterer. There is not reason given to divorce and Marry another except for a woman's fornication before marriage.

I'm confused as a catholic by the non-distinction between civil divorce and covenant divorce.

What a wonderful conversation. Lots to consider and work through with the Lord on this one. Thank you Preston and Dr. Constantine! I've shared this and will continue spreading the word as these are such important perspectives to consider for so many of us. God Bless!

Grace and Peace Brothers Let me help you with this Divorce is only due a woman not being pure when she gets married In today's world we have to go by what Jesus said meaning if you divorce for a reason other than fornication before marriage, and you marry another you will be committing adultery. If you do divorce for the right reason which a woman fornicating before she is married then the wife should remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. Once a woman is defiled she can't go back to her husband. There is no such thing as divorce for adultery. We error not reading the book itself but turning to others who also error in understanding

Sir beliefs that are rare today become commonplace in a very short time. We have example after example of this. You are wrong about same sex marriage here in Texas it is everywhere. GO BACK TO GEN. that is what Jesus did in Matt. 19.
