I saw a mini documentary some time back about the fabled pizza MRE. Apparently the armed forces research and development had been working on it for DECADES, it was the most requested meal item among all branches of the armed forces, and the R&D people in the past had basically deemed it impossible to make a decent tasting pizza MRE....they poured tens of millions of dollars on the problem and hundreds of man hours to be able to finally achieve it.

No joke, I JUST got back from bar trivia at Cottage Inn Pizza and what's the first thing I see on my home screen? My two favorite soldiers trying the legendary Pizza MRE. It was meant to be. Absolutely love the whole vibe of this one and the comparison to the different pizzas (Though I would have went more budget on the store pizzas and got a Tostito's square pizza that you microwave). If you ever get the chance to try a Detroit style pizza, you will love it (Yes Little Caesar's is from Detroit but that doesn't count). Detroit style is a deep dish, squared pizza. Keep up the great work!

You probably got a bad batch. The pizza MRE is notoriously finicky when it comes to storage. I got to taste test the pizza MRE and I would give it a solid 3/5. The entire Menu 23 is a solid 3.5/5 for me. Everything else in it is a homerun, IMO. 😁 When I say homerun and 3 and 3.5 out of 5 I mean by MRE standards, not frozen pizza or pizza parlor standards. The pizza itself is just okay pizza, it's if you get one in the field and you're hungry that it's going to be a morale booster, IMO. 🙂

Utica Tomato Pie would make a better MRE. It's served cold. Gas stations just wrap in shrink wrap and sell room temp from the counter.

@@Mr_Dopey I think I've heard of that before but when it comes to MREs you have to work with the suppliers that you have. More importantly than supply issues though is the pizza in the pizza MRE has quite a bit food science to it to make it shelf stable for several years. The cheese isn't just regular mozzarella cheese, it's very low moisture cheese, which is why it doesn't melt. Plus the pizza is deliberately undercooked then sealed so that it doesn't end up being way too dry to eat. There are unfortunately a lot of compromises that have to be made to make an MRE main shelf stable, and some things, especially with something like pizza, a lot of changes had to be made from a regular pizza and those changes might make a Utica tomato pie not nearly as appetizing as one you can buy at the restaurant... or gas station, although around here no one buys gas station pizza and I don't know any place that offers it. 😄 I live in Socal.

@@MisterNi I don't know of a gas station within 100 miles of me that doesn't sell pizza. Some off the gas stations near me even have drive throughs for pizza. That's not even including the chain pizza companies and the mom and pop shops. I don't think you can go one mile without a mom and pop pizza shop. Anyway home cooked tomato pie is shelf stable for at least a week, maybe longer. It seems like a good place to start. Instead of pizza which lasts a day at best.

@@Mr_Dopey Yeah it's kind of amazing how different what foods you can buy at a gas station, depending on where you live. I live in socal and I'd probably stick to buying coffee with maybe a prepackaged bearclaw or Danish. Maybe some nachos if I were hungry and there are some places where you can buy burgers and fried chicken. In southern California, no pizza though, interestingly enough. I do know it's popular back east though.

Gene Yu is the legend! During SERE, him and another candidate ran into Mexicans. Using their broken language skills, they were taken into town. Gene Yu had the super power of having his debit card number memorized. Not disposing of the receipt was his downfall and he scored a DNR. I don't know how he did it yet but, he came back and got his Green Beret.

For me it's Grandiosa frozen pizza here in Sweden. Thick or thin, big or small......🙃 We have them in diffrent sizes and with diffrent toppings. They are a little bit more expensive compared to other discount pizzas, but still a discount pizza. I don't know if it's only a thing in scandinavian countries or if it's known world wide. Correct me if I’m wrong but there has to be a way to give soldiers in the field better food, right? I know that MREs have to be long-lasting, compact, and still give a working body everything it needs but does the military absolutely have to distribute MREs that are years or even decades old? Why can’t you just train and equip on-base personnel to prepare and pack food for soldiers heading out? That way, you’ll get a much wider variety of foods depending on where the base is located and maybe some fresh ingredients too. I know the military probably can’t do that for all deployments but I feel like they can do it more often than they’re letting on.

Had they made the pizza into a 'build it yourself' style, it would lose points for being 'eaten fast and efficiently' I guess? Unsweetened or low sugar Ketchup (or even tomato paste packets), and low moisture cheese bread, and dried pepperoni cubes can be packaged separately and all heated up in the flameless ration, since cheese is integrated into the bread already, they could coat it in a little bit of olive oil which acts as a preservative as well. Heck you can have garlic bread pizza hybrid and it'd be better than a mishmash of stuff on regular wheat bread. But I guess they avoid too many fat or oil or it will decrease the soldier's performance?

@@darkgeargaming1564 Basically if it's a package that is meat sauce like for a pasta, but used on a bread instead. The issue with the concept of bread is that it requires air for it to be soft and fluffy, but it does not last long. Bagels and Baguettes for instance are notorious for going stale and rock hard. They have less 'air bubbles' in them, and the gluten in the bread is compacted to save space. At best, you can have 'thin' bread that is like crackers, and flavor them with garlic bread seasonings.

The US military with MRE's are like every game developer. When they add something new to the game that people really want it is always going to be accompanied by several problems that they would not care about unless it makes the game unplayable or makes the game so easy that the developers do not earn any more money from micro transactions. For those who do not understand what I am trying to say, you get a pizza the long awaited item and you get vegetable crackers and an oatmeal cookie just like rockstar who gave us a bunch of cool vehicles and buffs the businesses, but then adds a cooldown on cayo perico.

When I used to drive OTR for months at a time, I would always take 4 to 6 cases of MREs since I may not find places to stop and eat. Through all my travels and going to (roughly) 16 to 18 cases of MREs, I have found only 1 pizza MRE and good Lord I actually felt bad for getting the golden ticket of MREs. Ohhhhh it was sooooooo good!!!!! Also, MREs are one of the greatest things when you're absolutely hammered. Nothing beats all that pre packaged food that will more than likely not fall apart (except the crackers) that you can just pound down while laughing hysterically for absolutely no reason 😏

I recently bought a box of 12 MRE cheese pizzas (it was cheaper than buying a single full MRE since the cheese pizza is the new replacement for the terrible vegetarian creamy spinach Alfredo) and the dough is fairly sweet like a dessert bread and it's thick. The sauce tastes ok but the cheese is on par with a vegan cheese substitute (meaning terrible). I tried the first one in the toaster oven to give it a fair chance and it made the cheese even worse. I ate the second one cold and it did seem to help overall. Mildly warm is probably your best bet. I guess I've got 10 more chances to make it better so we'll see. I justified buying it because each piece of cheese pizza is 10 grams of protein, I'm not sure if the pepperoni ones have more protein or not...
