Good Morning... Captain Tim from Andros, Greece... Hoping and Praying 🙏🌹🕊️ that everyone is doing well and everything is going well with You Personally as well as Your Beautiful Beloved Family... What a great explanation on the electronics on the bridge of your tugboat.... Captain Tim... gone are the days when the pilot house had a steering stand with a huge wheel and telegraphs on each side.. leaving enough room to be leaned over the windows and watching the motions of the vessel... The only electronics was the radar and Motorola HT-200 VHF radio.... Miss those days....!!!.... Best Regards and Love... George and Irene Stouraites..... We LOVE YA' MA'AN..!!!

As a yacht owner I prefer a wheel. In the past I preferred tiller but harder work but more feel. Operating by electronics is a different ball game! No feel but expertise knowledge and experience. Go the other channel too! Added both. I am enjoying the real life advice. Most sailing channels are blogs ZERO advice I was once critisced about my helm choice - it was weather helm on a tallship I just held course by compass and officers orders. I love MMSI and AIS and DSC calling.# I too don;t like auto pilot - it steers course but it ignores waves. Windows yes! Also red night at night. It is needed to prevent night blindness. Magnetic field true -even a PC or other has effect. True vs apparent hard to understand for most especially sailors. Lights yes so important, OMG I am commenting on everything! Great episode. NO I wasn't one asking for this but nice!

Great video. Fuel burn makes sense because of fuel dilution of the engine lubricating oil. Back in the day we did an every 4 hour viscosity check of the engines oil checking for dilution. A sudden increase could indicate a bad injector or even a blown piston. It is a network but every thing on it is a node. like a printer is a node on home computer. If the printer stops working the computer still functions. Just like us in life we are nodes to the larger system. The world don't stop turning if one of us fails.

In aviation, the calibrating of the magnetic compass correction masses is called “swinging the compass” and requires the airplane to be physically repositioned (swung/rotated) around a vertical axis through the fuselage. I presume that a similar procedure is used to calibrate a compass on a boat/ship.
@TimBatSeaАй бұрын
Yes we too call it swinging the compass. CUOTO

Tim - many recreational VHF DSC radios have a built-in GPS receiver. As long as you've connected an external GPS antenna to the radio, it will know location and send a valid distress message (and answer position requests etc.) Better units will also listen to the network and use that in preference if it working The KEY message for users is as you say - if the DSC radio has a valid lat/long on the screen, the red button is all you need in extremis. If if doesn't, then a Mayday voice call on Ch 16 with your best guess at location is needed to get help quickly.

I had no idea that ships had standard horn signals! When I saw your "horn signal panel" I looked up the collection of horn signals and I see how that automatic system could be quite handy. It seems that trains and ships both use the same horn signal for backing up: three shorts blasts! I think I might be able to use that 'five-short blasts' signal when I'm driving! 🤔 Sometimes I'm completely baffled at what some driver is doing! 🤪🤯

Even in the small planes that I use to fly we had plenty of electronics. But also always had a base set of non-electronic instruments, specifically, compass, air-speed, rate of climb/descent, and turn-and-bank indicator. I was up once with another member of our flying club, who happened to also be a flight instructor, checking out a plane our club had just acquired. We took off in IFR conditions, climbed through the cloud cover, and broke out at about 5,000 Ft ASL. We canceled the IFR flight plan and were just flying around enjoying the plane and looking at the clouds (from well above) when we realized we had lost our electrical system. We immediately shut off all electronic/electrical devices, waited a bit, and turned one radio back on to make a distress call. The FAA enroute traffic control center in Oberlin, OH picked up the call and identified our location over the middle of Lake Erie. Because the flight instructor was (obviously) instrument rated, the center agreed to guide us back towards Detroit Metro Airport, although I actually flew the plane. The controller had us descend through the clouds. We broke out about 600 ft above the Lake right along the Ontario shore. The center handed us off to DTW approach control and they talked us in, routing us around TV towers, before finally handing us to the tower for landing. All done on manual instruments except the radio. All of the traffic control personnel were outstanding. Fortunately, small propeller planes use magnetos to power the spark plugs, so no problem keeping the engine running. I think all commercial aircraft still have a magnetic compass, and I would not be surprised if the still have the same basic non-electric instruments we used to get our plane back to our operating base. PS - we also had a escape plan if needed. We new that if we flew a NNW heading (magnetic compass) we would eventually “fly out” of the weather and be able to navigate visually (we had maps, of course) to an airfield.

Hi Tim! I was hoping you would discuss some about the predicter line. And what is used so you have that.
@TimBatSeaАй бұрын
Thank you for watching Randell. It is technically a vector line and every GPS and plotter has one (even on your phone). Where it is different for us is our use of a heading sensor. The "predictor line" or "vector line" show the actual movement regardless of the direction you are pointed. Have you ever used google maps and walked backwards? You are still pointed forwards, but it shows you loving backwards. Does that help? CUOTO

Tim, first let me say I really enjoy videos. However you have in the past and in this video as well use accromems that you do not explain. I realize you use must these terms many times daily and think nothing about it. However I am not a sailor or a tugboat captain and I have no idea what they mean. I watch your videos to get a glimpse into your world and really appreciate your efforts to bring us un-nautical types along for the ride. You may have explained the unknown terms in the past but many I do not know. Another thing along the same lines are all the calls you make to get underway. It seems you have to inform at least three different agency's. If you could go into that sometime, I for one would appreciate it. And if you have explained all the points I mentioned, then I apologize for missing them. Keep you the good work, thanks.
