Man, this was a great breakdown of his music. I'm a huge Porter fan, and as someone who also makes music, I'm constantly listening to his music trying to figure out what he's doing and what parts of his music I like best so I can try to learn from it. Also being someone who is relatively new to making music it's hard to be able to understand what he's doing by ear, so having someone to actually show me what he's doing and breaking down a few songs is really helpful

I literally can't wait for porter's next album to literally change his genre again

so Russian Roulette was my favorite track from smile BECAUSE it uses melody and chord movements I that I like to apply in my own music. I'm a sucker for that 8 bar progression where it starts minor and moves to the relative dorian in the second half

This is super helpful! I love the insight and additional clips pointing to why porter made this decisions, such as chromatic note movements to make it less "bubblegum". I"ve tried to mimic some of his stuff before, but it always happens to sound too happy. Thanks for this!

the thing that ties his music all together is using 3xosc for 10+ years on every song haha

This was a GREAT video, Ash. I know these video essays take a while to pull together, but I can’t even imagine how compelling your breakdown of your hyperpop influences would be. I’ll keep dreaming of it and whomever might be featured in it. (Whether it’s Charli XCX/AG Cook/100 gecs, I’m in.)

How can I use transitions in music, and what are the different types? I'm not good at using them and don’t know how to place them in every part of the intro, drums, and build-up. Can you make a video explaining this? We've learned everything from you except this. 🗿

he follows a japanese-like setup for chords
@cloutpics3 ай бұрын
@@gwebdecoder I was gonna say this! I think the common progression is 4-5-3-6; I could be wrong but this is pretty close
@gwebdecoder3 ай бұрын
@@cloutpics exactly! the key is that it's in this setup with the passing chords at the first pattern: 4, 1-5, 3-6. It's a variation of the royal road (4-5-3-6).

Lydian is a relative mode that was used in a lot of early video games for that sort of “wistful happiness” vibe (think: Legend of Zelda fairy music 🧚 ). Basically, anytime you’re talking about “starting on the 4” could be that you’re talking about Lydian and not Ionian (Major). Knowing that Porter is both an anime weeb and gamer, it’s fitting that the influence of Japanese composers is all over Porter’s sound. Yet another beautiful example of how our past influences our future. 🫶🏽
@gwebdecoder3 ай бұрын
@@hey_maurice well, it depends! The numbers correspond to scale degrees but mostly common in Ionian. It can also be used in Minor modes and not just Major. Other than that, it is truly beautiful how music has evolved!
