Consider this perspective, an ENTP won't usually argue with someone they already have little to no respect for. If an ENTP is debating you over seemingly nothing then they are reassuring themselves of their respect for you and the value of your ideas. It can also be a way of bonding with you by aligning to your perspective on a matter and grounding themselves from their flights of fancy.

I'd add another thing: Not every ENTP is argumentative. ENTPs are first and foremost curious and open minded. They love exploring new ideas, which often involves taking the idea apart, asking questions and looking for contradictions. Not every ENTP however, is a "devil's advocate." They might prioritize learning over dissecting. Or they might just have a less combative communication style. This is probably why a lot of ENTP might test as ENFP; because they're not argumentative and don't fit the stereotype.

She knows now that I don’t do anything with the intention to hurt her and once she points out what’s wrong I’ll simply apologize for doing it anyway and correct myself making sure I don’t repeat it again, also I learned to ask a bit more and check if things are okay and giver her the space to make clear if it’s fine or something that I said was mean. Even if we’re arguing and disagree with each other the goal is not to convince the other, but instead make sure we understand why they believe in something and get what they’re trying to say but continue to believe in whatever we want without hurting anyone.

@@thekidsarefine6303 Well, as someone with ADHD and who’s also ENTP I think this more about a lack of character than anything else… Yes, we find ways to get what we want but it doesn’t mean we’ll have to lie or hurt other people in the process, the real challenge it’s to thing outside the box to find a different way to get what we want. I hate lies, I’d rather face a hard truth than content myself with something fake. We all have faults and if someone points out some flaw I know I have I just say okay and move on, there’s not even a reason to be upset about something that’s true when I’m already working on it, so these things don’t faze me at all. Now if someone says something I don’t agree with I would like to discuss with them and figure out why they think that, if it ends up not being true I’ll explain myself and if they don’t wanna see this, it’s their problem. If it’s a lie I wouldn’t have to work that hard to prove then wrong, either with words or actions, a fact can’t be changed and the truth is there for anyone that wants to see and accept it.

A strong Fe ENTP here and ivd like to share my experience in regards of the points you mentioned : 1. Argumentative It's true that for the most of my life i've been always argumentative and i confirm it's never been for malicious reasons it's always to gain more info or to play with other people, see i'm not a person who enjoys a night out, safari or even simple leisures such as dining out...I'm though the type of person to enjoy a good conversation about anything as long as you're willing to truly speak your mind and express your thoughts freely. That being said not many people are actually willing to do so and if they do most of them take things way too personally which is a trait i really hate which led to me being the least argumentative least judgmental in my circle. Honestly at this point i'm more of a people pleaser than ExFJ lol and lately i've been hating that so i became less talktive and less outgoing generally, some've noticed others haven't.... Yeah... I'm currently really disappointed in people around me which leads us to... 2. Idealistic to the point of literally doing nothing You don't know how much i appreciate the way you explained this point so perfectly so thank you very much. I haven't really noticed that about myself untill recently with my friends that i'm too GREEDY! My expectations are too high and too idealistic eventhough i encourage others to be realistic all the time lol, i want to know, learn and do everything so quickly and so perfectly that i end up doing absolutely nothing. I'm never satisfied about anything my work my body my demeanor... Nothing! I really hope i'm in the exaggerated pathological stage and it's my problem not a general ENTP problem because it's really difficult and it's sad and in your words it's making me a "wasted potential" 3. Empathetic We're really underrated in that department, remember when i said i'm a strong Fe ENTP, my Fe is so strong that i notice stuff before my xxFJs friends and tbh i hate it, maybe because i'm in unhealthy loop and i can't use my Fe properly but i do care a lot if people don't give me the same treatment i give them back and i do care a lot about random people around and it's annoying because if i don't act nicely i feel like i'm satan himself... Again i hope it's a "me" problem not an ENTP thing

As a strong ENTP(42, M), I think I would say that for those with high ideals and perfectionist tendencies, it's essential to pose a few reflective questions to oneself: 1. Does it truly matter? Would your future self, five years from now, care as deeply as you currently do? 2. If it does matter, why does it hold such significance? Here, I'd echo Feynman's cautionary advice: "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool." Furthermore, it's beneficial to embrace the mindset that "it's about progress, not perfection." Also, remember that "whatever you place on a pedestal will own you." I find this last one to be a useful reminder to back off and re-evaluate the situation, and ask myself 'what do I want' rather than be led by natural ENTP furiously curious traits.

I tend to realise now that I truly never judge people on something except indirectly value their existence in my life by the amount of creativity and stimulation they bring into my life, and the best way to do that is by making me talk, or listen.
@mohamedelamrani63785 ай бұрын
PS: I also understand why some people don't like me, I start a subject about sharks, and end up talking about the apocalypse, and after 35 minutes of talking I go back to talking about a scene in Jaws, and make a metaphor or a link between the 343592 concepts I just talked about, I think I'm just a crazy person like all the Entps around the world lol

Your points are especially true for type 7's, which seem to be extra common amongst ENTPs. Valuing the need to see something from all perspectives doesn't make someone directly agree or disagree on a point. More like arguing for another point of view that could be had by someone else, but not necessarily that person's true standpoint on the topic.
@TheRickRoller1 Жыл бұрын
I guess I'll join the fray and add some opinions of my own. First, ENTPs care a lot. They care about the truth, and the long term consequences you'll face if they don't tell you plainly. Most people are considered kind if they say a nice word while you're headed for disaster. Also, they don't really argue in the sense most people would think, because they are not attached to any particular stance. You agreeing with them doesn't change how they like you. The alleged argument is simply a discussion to explore views.
@johnknight9150 Жыл бұрын
(INTJ) I get frustrated with ENTPs. They can be either my favourite or least favourite people. I think the chief criticism the rest of us would level at them is, 'yes, but you've got to stand for something'. I have absolutely no problem with playing devil's advocate, but ENTPs all too often play it so much that they end up actually advocating for the devil. If they want to play the game of intellectual detachment, they would be better to imitate their INTP cousins, rather than actually living out an idea and then suddenly abandoning it.

As an ENTP, I kinda get that - but for me I would say that our 'stand for something' beliefs is simply that we must all question our beliefs and such. Without questioning nothing will ever improve or get better. And then for abandoning ideas, yeah its frustrating for us too, hahaha, but I always feel better knowing I have knowledge in a whole bunch of subjects than deep knowledge in one. But that's just differences in how we prefer things. I know my Dad (ISTJ) cannot fathom my desire to know lots of things and not just one thing in depth
@johnknight9150 Жыл бұрын
@@carolinemasson7172 I think that spread of attention is a key difference between ENTPs and INTPs. I think INTPs are interested in lots of different things, and often lots of new things too, but they will sustain an interest in something longterm. Do you think Tucker Carlson is an ENTP? I'm cutting to the worst incarnation I can think of for an example, but it makes my stomach churn the way he can publicly extol one idea while believing something else. Anyone who can preach something to the nation night after night while actually believing something else entirely probably needs two to the back of the head.

Thank you for this video. I left an old friend a few years ago because of his questionable views on certain points of morality. Had I considered that he was "debating" with me over these issues, I may have approached the situation differently. One of the main reasons I'm drawn to MBTI is to be able to understand those who differ from me! I fear I may die a hopeless INFP. I would rather believe I'm the one lacking than to lose respect for friend.
@carolinemasson7172 Жыл бұрын
nawrr, not leaving them! But even as an ENTP there is an extent to what we will argue from. Usually if I'm arguing from the perspective of a particularly questionable perspective, I'll let my friends know that I don't actually believe it so they don't do this lmoaoo. Also, as an ENTP, there are definitely times where I've argued something I genuinely believe in and when my friend has a very different view on it, it grates against me and makes me almost irritated with them - so I get in a way kinda stopping being friends with someone if their views are very morally questionable!

@@carolinemasson7172 as i understand it, for ENTPs it's morally questionable to not question moral.... well, if that makes sense, idk. Anyways, i think ENTPs love arguing so they can find the biggest truth and thus improve the morality of their actions through exceptional understanding and consideration of any possible angle. Sure, it might be immoral to sympathise with a murderer, but it's just as immoral to condemn someone to be a murderer who might actually be innocent on a second or third look, and thus, every side should get a chance to be explored and understood

The issue with the "5th" letter is, that 16personalities is mixing up MBTI with the Big 5 (Big 5 is simply 1000x easier to make an accurate test for), while the latter considers 5 independent scales and the former is built up through an ordered function stack (and thus having 2 intertwined/dependent components, 1st the functions present in the stack and 2nd the order of these functions), thus varying hugely in how they work. ENTP are actually insanely fond of rules the common notion that ENTPs break rules is because breaking rules is not much so as neglecting the concept of rule itself, but to point out that rules have hierarchy, where nature being the highest order of rules that exist. and in hierarchy comes value. Looking for the hidden, often overlooked, rules of other hierarchal position that is related to the topic at hand is insanely interesting, as you seemingly point out things that are generally disregarded and behind obscurities. This makes you feel special, irreplaceable, and safe. 1. breaking rules need to have return results, because the act itself is meant to prove that there're other rules/systems at play 2. people who make low tier rules often feel a false confidence, need to be reminded

As a mature ENTP male, I was shocked when I took the OCEAN personality tests. My Agreeableness score was only 11%. Whereas my Compassion score was near the male norm, my Politeness score was only 3%. I'm a perfectly polite individual in the traditionalist sense of the word, but Politeness is a dimension of intrusive challenging of normative assumptions. This questioning and interrogative need for a clear definition makes my rhetoric precise. I use editing software that tightens my grammar and loose expressions improperly learned from my Si experiences. A good ear allows my extensive vocabulary to continually play with words. I've discovered that much of humor is the poetic application of sounds. Like music, a comedic riff is the product of a flow state of consciousness.

Your third point is quite problematic. If someone correctly empathizes with another's perspective only to get under their skin, that is quite a sadistic behaviour. I remember Walter Issacson's biography of Steve Jobs. There is a statement that roughly goes like this. "Those who watch his cutting and cold remarks to others might conclude that Jobs lacked empathy. However, it was the opposite, he clearly was able to accurately gauge the emotions of another person. He just used that knowledge to critique them in the most brutal and cutting way". Now this don't mean Jobs was ENTP. I strongly believe he is ISTP.

My favourite way to raise an uncomfortable idea or dismantle someones ideas is to guide them down the path themselves. Ask them questions, walk them down the garden path, and then watch their faces drop when they find themselves coming to a controversial conclusion. It's a thing of beauty.
