i think the witch is actually crying to lure people, i think the l4d zombies have a "hunt and kill" instinct with the witch having it,basically they kill people to eat them later, because the witch is obviously smart enough to lure people and thus probably to know to eat stuff to survive, and they clearly ate the guy in the witchboat in the comic,so it makes sense. also the hunter has the HK instinct too as theyre literally called hunters and are incredibly tactical (watch the hunter profile video), then the smoker wich weakens and makes its prey closer with its tongue, i assume they eat the body or something later on like a really gorey and messed up weird spider

The witch exibits heavy fever-like symptoms, and the resulting terrible migranes stick with them after mutation. This would explain the sensitivity to light and noise, their constant crying, their preference for dark quiet places and why they're always covering their head as they walk about. it also explains why they all wander about half naked. being clothed with a high fever would likely cause them to start overheating, they claw most of their clothes off as a result of the discomfort. There's also a theory hunters go through a similar high fever process but rip their eyes out in reaction to their sensitivity to light... but since you mentioned how common infected hallucinate the way they do, i'm starting to wonder if that has a hand in it as well.

Here's a theory: what if the infection mutated the survivors to become more durable? We know for a fact that they're all infected. They're carriers. Maybe they mutated a little from it. It'd explain why they can take so much abuse and basically shake it off. They can take katana slashes, grenade launcher grenades, punches from tanks and chargers, get strangled by smokers, torn up by hunters, beaten to hell and back by commons, survive witches (w/o expert or realism), take a shotgun shell and only get knocked down (on expert, not even that on other dificulties), even take a chainsaw and only get irritated for the first couple seconds. Hell, they don't even show any visible injuries aside from blood on their clothes. Get hit by a car that was punched by a tank? Get up, use a medkit, good as new. Shotgun to the chest? Just a scratch. Mauled by a hunter? Just take some painkillers. Seriously, these guys are superhuman or something. I know most of this is gameplay stuff, but still.

I had a theory a ways back that the witches were women who were pregnant when they were infected. This would explain why there's only Female witches, why there's so few of them, possibly why they follow certain cravings, (the mass of witches at the sugar mill) and could even tie into why they are severely crying all the time. (Obviously the baby died, possibly even absorbed into their own body as part of the infection, and on some level they're still aware of that loss.) I don't think it's the fact they they see anything in it, I believe that one, the bile is just suppose to act as a homing beacon for the other infected, they relate the smell of the bile as one of their own and because it's in such high amount, they see it as one of their own kind telling them to focus on that specific thing, some insects do this as well so I don't find it impossible to believe for the infected to go by this principle. The pipe bomb emits a beeps that most likely rings in the ears of the infected much more than a normal humans, it's obvious that infected hate noise, which is one of the reasons they go after human or to places with loud noise, they can hear the sound from far away and they want it to stop so to make it stop, they try to destroy whatever is emitting the noise. this principle is the same for the pipe bomb, the pipe bomb is easier to focus on and more irritating to an infected than a moving human will be, so they prioritize killing what's irritating them more first, i.e. the pipe bomb.

A theory I had was that the special infected are just normal zombies but there are different stages as one gets infected. Since they patched it as a bug pretty early on in the first game, I'm fairly certain it's a stretch to consider it canon. But how the witches would originally attack anything that provoked it, including other special infected if you could forced one to damage it seemed to speak that they're almost the most clear-headed of the infected. Following the line of thinking that the infection is more like 28 Days Later and it's more of an intense psychosis, the witches could very well be trapped on the very fine line between fully succumbing and trying to keep it together. Heightened emotional states and chemical imbalances could keep them in a constant cloud of delusional paranoia, lashing out at anything that draws its head back into reality where it perceives every living thing around it as a grotesque nightmare. To them, they're still an idea of themselves trying to claw out of their own heads. And a step further but maybe a little farfetched is that they could be cognizantly aware that they're infected but so far gone into their dementia that they lack any and all restraint or control of themselves when an emotional response is elicited. That's why they cry and wail, like they're having moments of clarity with agonizing despair or hatred for themselves.
