@@Thenerdywalrus Correct. Most likely, Audi wanted them to stop because VW was using their design and because Audi wanted to sell their more of their turbo'ed I5s, which is a fundamentally similar engine. This VR5 came in a 2.3L and nothing else, according to memory

That’s not the case. VW stopped making the 07k because its MPG was too low for the power it produced. I love the 07k in my Jetta, but it really drinks fuel and I understand why VW switched to the 1.4T. However, it would have been nice if they turbo-d it (Volvo style).

You forgot to mention the vr6 was a beefy diesel designed engine originally that turned gaser with crappy head studs.

In Germany, car taxes and VAT is also tied to engine displacement…hence the fixation on 2.0l across all market segments. The goal was to maximize 2.5l benchmark and still fit in the 2.0 engine bays across the VAG product offerings.

Short answer... its smaller. Smaller allows fitting into smaller engine compartments.

Ever wonder if the vr5 was a development platform for the w10 development that they tried, it never went into production but the photos seem to share a lot of similarities

Its VR for a reason, V-Reihe wich means V Inline, its basically an inline engine with the cylinders rotated at 15 or 10.5 degrees compared to each other, so you van fit 5-6 cylinders in a space designed for 4. So its not a V engine, because it only has one head.

The VR5 was made to offer better product segmentation and fuel economy than the VR6. It didn't last long.

At least VW actually bothered to create a new casting unlike JLR who took a V8 and just blanked off the end cylinder on each bank to create their 3.0L V6. The Supercharged 3.0L AJ126 V6 weighs more than the N/A 5.0L V8 and in my experience got worse fuel economy, was much less powerful, idled roughly, and wasn’t exactly good in any particular metric. The VR5 did at least sound good and back in the early 2000s its power output was pretty decent, better than the 2.5L N/A I5 that came later.

The VR5 was mostly good for smaller size and MPG, in things like the Mk4 Golf and Bora. Weird concept, but sounds great (like most 5cyls)!

I don't even see how this design could work correctly because with the crank in the center and cylinders firing at TDC the angle of the rods would throw the crank in reverse. LOL. I don't think the cylinder angle is enough and no matter the crank layout the combustion would not drive the crank until allot of additional rotation occured. It would fight itself. I haven''t looked at how they do it yet. I say have a crank for the left side, another for the right. Counter rotating, geared together
@acefighterpilot
@acefighterpilot 7 ай бұрын
Clearly it works, so there's something you're missing. Which is a) bore axis offset; cylinder bores don't intersect the crankshaft, but rather an imaginary point 12mm to either side of the crankshaft, and b) split crankshaft pins with 22° offset. I suggest you do some research instead of claiming something that has been quite successful and proven is actually impossible.

@@acefighterpilot I said I haven't looked at how they do it. But however they do its a piss poor design.

@@acefighterpilot There's no such thing as a crankshaft pin and if the cylinders were all on one side i wouldn't have made the comment. I wouldn't have made if it was bored with the cylinders looking back at the crank but its a flat block with straight bores. Offset cylinders are useful but when they're on one side of the crank only. This design requires doing some timing trickery and settling for all the extra vibration and wear. Its bad design and their reputation is exactly that. I loved my buddy's VW with it but I hated watching him getting his second rebuild at 92,000 miles with no warranty. Its junk.
