The age old question. Are you drawn to fancy colours over function? We bust the mystery wide open with carefully chosen test pilot Sam Lamiroy. Never worry about what fins you need to surf again, we've got you covered. Featuring Mick Fanning Neo Carbon, Julian Wilson Aircore, Reactor and Performer all in FCS II on the same fresh board, which is the Fourth 'Five Nine' model; 6'0.5" x 19 7/16 x 2.5.
The result? Well, see above. But if you take one thing away, it's that experimentation is key. We can point you in the right direction but it's your surfing that will depict what fins you should ride. Get out there, keep surfing and let this be a guiding light for your next fin choice.

Great overview of fins. That small changes in fin shape, stiffness & size can make the same board feel very different, is so true. Thanks.

Your point on medium vs large is very interesting, i m 83kg and I actually prefer medium fins in 2 4 foot beach break, I find that the board to be less rigid and more playful, i dont really feel less speed, actually sometimes i feel smaller fins go faster with less drag on smaller waves

Great video, I’m going to try larger fins seeing as I’m even a little heavier than you, in hopes the performer helps keep me more connected to the water :) cheers

Going by the norm, manufacturers guides, Sam should be surfing large fins. I'm 69 kgs and surf medium. Wonder if I should try a small template fin?

You're close to my weight, I'm riding Medium all the time, but sometimes when it's mushy/windy and kind of small I love to put a smaller centre fin to loosen things up. Small size fins for +60kg I would not recommend. Hope it helps buddy. Check this fin tutorial out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGmwpoiQn9melcU

Mick Fanning Neo Carbon Large works wonders for me 100Kg 1.84m on a 7'6" McCoy Nugget, I particularly like FCS II Carver templates, I think they trim fast and hold well.

have you ridden both the performance core and the neo carbon Fannings? I love the performance core Fannings but they do feel just a tad heavy. As in actual weight. I'm interested in the neocarbon, but I don't like my fins super soft either. Do they feel soft or does it have a pretty positive feeling to the flex?

What fins? Plastic! I will never ever put fiberglass fins as side fins under my longboard again. Man, I cut my foot while turning around so bad. Plastic or I will ride my longboard in the future with a single fin.

product placements suggesting plastic fins as a high performance product. great.

None of these fins are plastic. His suggestions were the PC Reactor (55% glass, 45% resin) and a Neo Glass Performer (50% glass, 50% resin), both of which plenty of pros ride. Not sure what your point is? Flex is great for smaller surf, so it's not like flex = poor performance.
