He was one of the most explosive players in the 90s...i couldn't understand why he felt like he was bigger than the game..considering how he came up..you would think that he would at least have people around him that were not scared to tell him..yo..dont do that man...he reminds me of how DAVID RUFFIN was...i remember in the TEMPTATIONS movie..OTIS WILLIAMS asked him..WHATS WRONG?...and RUFFIN replied...Nothin...for the first time?..everything is right..and i think Rider was the same way...it seemed like he HAD TO HAVE SOMETHING BAD HAPPEN or else he didnt feel right..i know some people like that..we call that..CANT WIN FOR LOSING...and to end this?...to even have the audacity to challenge KOBE further lets me know he had a false sense of bravado and got mortally humbled because of it...i just wish he had some guidance when he first got in the league...peace..and much respect to STUNTED GROWTH for not pulling punches...salute to J.R.though..

JC Coach said he couldn't shoot...he torched us. But I see him as Harold Minor with a J who had a real chance to just play. His attitude was the only barrier to his game. Unlike Minor they never gave him freedom to just ball. So, you didn't missing a thing JR'S ego got in the way.

Although he was a phenomenal talent Isiah Rider forgot the fundamental rule of getting paid to play sports: You are a PROFESSIONAL athlete first and foremost. Professional being the operative word. When a team decides to draft you trade for you or sign you they are investing in you. They want to see a return on that investment. You can not tarnish your value by constantly running afoul of the law doing crazy things or misrepresenting yourself or the team. JR Rider was a headache his entire time in the league and after a while teams didn’t want anything to do with him.

He was like the Crosstown Hood rival to Latrell Sprewell in the mid90s .Great break down on Riders career .he was that o.g. .he one of the few players that held his own and bodied alot of Allstars at his position but polish and integrity along with focus not having ,or atleast maintaining a solid 2 out of 3 can derail ur growth or career in any sport or in general.

He said himself he had nobody in his corner to mentor him. Talent wise he was one of the best. And he even went bar for bar with the Goat MJ.. that Portland team he was on seemed to be the best teams he was on. (Not including the Lakers)Even tho he was not the first option on the offense. That hawks team sucked and those other players didn't value winning they didn't care so he expressed that and the media ate it up... Salute to JR Rider

Here's the deal, i get that he was a tough teammate off the court, but Portland trading both him and a solid Jimmy Jackson for a washed up Steve Smith was idiotic. Especially because he lead them to the conference finals in his last year there! It's hilarious that Hawks fans thought it was terrible for the Hawks, in hindsight it was because that's when Rider went off the rails, but there's no reason that something like that would've occurred if Portland kept him. First off, he was an extremely versatile scorer, he could drive with the athleticism to finish at them rim, became a pretty damn good outside shooter, and developed a deadly mid-range pull-up to go with great post moves he wasn't a ball-hawk or anything, but he still was a much better defender than Smith atleast. So if it was one for one, imo it was dumb - but to then throw in the fact that they traded easily one of the best 6th man in the league the previous year in Jimmy Jackson, this trade was horrific. Jimmy had a great shot, wasn't as athletic as he was since his injuries', but was still more athletic than a prime Steve Smith, and Steve was far from his prime at the time of the trade. Plus he was a great play-making and defender to boot. That 99 Blazers teams was a much better all-around team than the next seasons' when they traded a slew of dues for an over the hill Pippen and an over the hill Steve Smith. Luckily we had Sheed who was no the primary go-to guy on that team, but because of that trade Portland really only had that one year to win it all because of the aging overpaid wings, when if they had held onto Rider, Jimmy Jackson, along with Walt Williams, Greg Anthony, and Calven Cato - who they traded to get Pippen they woulda had at least 2 to 3 years where they would have had a chance. Walt was underrated as fuck and was still in his prime, (pre-knee injuries, meaning he was a much better all-around scorer as opposed to the pure spot up shooter he became after those injuries), who had come off of averaging 14 to 17 a game for the Kings and Raptors before getting to Portland and started half the games that year and the other half was competing with Jackson for sixth man. Not to mention they of course still had phenomenal back-up wing and defensive specialist Stacy Augmon, with youngsters Jermain O'Neal and Bonzi Wells. That was the deepest team I've ever seen. There's been plenty of teams with more star power but none that came close to having the skill and talent level through all 12 players the way Portland did in 99. Really wish they would have gotten one more year with that group to see they could have gone all the way.
