Definitively a Glock, High Point or Keltec pistols. Why? Unnatural presentation, don't feel right in my hands and that should be enough reasons not to purchase any of these three.

Recently brought my first. 45 and 1911. Which is a citadel 1911 with the extra grip and a better Beaver tail. I absolutely love It. It’s my project gun, so I’m learning to modify it and not Afraid of any scratches or damages . Even Though I don’t treat it like crap. Cost me 620. A better option would have been To get the Springfield for.an extra 100 dollars. Still happy with my purchase and I can go wrong with a lifetime warranty!

I love my Rock Island .45. When I first tried it out and found the slide release was a little stiff for my style. Called them up and talked to them about it and said they will correct it at no charge. I also asked about a Wilson ambi safety and a tapered mag well parts I had being installed. They said it would be no problem installing those, just send the pistol and parts to them and they will take care of everything. About two or three weeks later they contacted me and said the gun was ready at no charge and shipped it back to me. Beautiful work,shoots like a dream . Great company and will buy another.45.

I own a Rock Island 1911 .45 and it's awesome. I bought a rock island compact in .45acp seven years ago. The only problems that I have had with it were in the breaking in period. It would hang up on feeding the 3rd round, and I would have to push the slide forward with my thumb. After around 200 rounds, it feeds flawlessly. The front sight came off at around 500 rounds and had to be re-staked. Other than that it is extremely well made, and very accurate. I did replace the ugly grips that it came with. I love it, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

As a machinist in the early 2000's I can say that the chances in machine technology was a game changer. By 2010 the inclusion of Lazer measurement systems made even more advancements. The repeatability of manufacturing is the reason why guns are so much more reliable today.
@Dan-di9jd
@Dan-di9jd 2 жыл бұрын
Not entirely in my opinion. I think the kind is important too. There's a reason no one can copy the m1 garand mainly because the machines that made them were melted down. The m14 machine was sold off to Taiwan and for a while, you could get a "true" spec forged model but since the export ban they became so rare. Other models like 1911s are very hard to make since they require some fitting on parts that everyone does slightly different. Then you have aks, which despite its simplicity in machining, requires some knowledge and hand fitting that no US manufacturer got quite right like the Russian or Chinese makers.

@@Dan-di9jd a exact copy of the M-1 is 100% possible with modern CNC machines. You might substitute material a little, but machine tools, especially CNC, has become generationally better multiple times in the last 40 years. What part in the M-1 can't be machined now? Because they have people producing every single replacement part today...we have the ability, but the market just isn't there for a 30-06 battle rifle. People cry about 308, or heaven forbid 277 fury. The number of people who would even be interested in a new production M-1 is a tiny portion of the market. And the people who would pony up 2-3k for one are even smaller. A company isn't gonna devote that kind of time and effort to sell 17 rifles

I don’t know what in the world you’re reading but I recommend reading some of the books from Fulton armory discussing the receivers. M1a receivers are generally cast today with a few companies making actual forged receivers. The action of the m1 is much harsher on the receiver so it needs to be well made.

I will have to confirm most of the other comments. I’m a Colt collector, and my bright finish officers was my favorite carry. I brought a RIA tact-2 compact, on a lark, wanting to have a beater gun in .45 ACP. Took it out with three boxes of cheap ammo. Not one malfunction. No FTF, FTE or SP. To this day, one year later, and many, many rounds, cheap, high end, speciality and hand loads. I still have not had a malfunction. My colt now rests comfortably in retirement, in my safe, as it could not say the same. Mine did have adjustable sights, replaced them and I put on tritium. I trust my RIA completely.

Not exactly sure the exact age of it, I want to say around 1912 was when it was made but please feel free correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to know more about its history. Anyhow... being a revolver passed down to now its 3rd generation the ol colt still operates flawlessly bring as old as it is not to mention it has always been tagged along to the range or while camping and never striked a dud even when rapidly unloading all 6 rounds being a double action. May seem silly but I often prefer to carry this gun rather than most of the semiauto higher capacity pistols most carry. Unlike some of today's handguns, you don't really have to worry about a jam or misfire with a well built revolver.

You had a bare bones RIA 1911 GI, which I own along with several other variants. The GI was made to look like a WWII GI and has fixed crappy sights. The next one up gives you a beaver tail and nice fiber optic sights if you want more of a competition gun. They can be a little finicky with the magazines, but aside from that they are very reliable, accurate, and built like tanks. You would have to spend a couple hundred more to get into the most basic Springfield 1911 GI. To say you would never buy another when you only had experience with one is a bit unfair to the brand. Every manufacturer makes a gun with some problems once in a while. That's what the warranty is for, and RIA has a very good one.

It was the driving reason l bought a RIA TAC II 10mm single stack 1911 when l saw it last winter in stock locally at a good price. It is easily the most accurate centerfire semiauto pistol l own. It has had one problem though. Sometimes the slide will lock open in the middle of a mag, and other times the slide won't lock back on an empty mag. Swapped the slide stop with my Colt Combat Elite and both pistols seem to be working just fine now. RIA 1911s are solid pistols, in my limited experience of two samples.

If you have small hands, hold them a certain way and use certain ammo, sure they are fine. Working as a certified range safety officer a few years ago I had many customers that had new Glock pistols that jammed a lot. The attitudes from these folks ranged from "what can I do to fix the problem" to having an emotional breakdown. When I told them to keep clearing the jam and continue shooting. Some guys did what I told them to do and after shooting about 50 rounds the jamming problem went away. The emotional guys would go through all kinds of emotions including wanting to sell their new gun. These guys stopped and bitched about every jam. So, I would go ro their stall and have them clear the jam and shoot over and over until the gun started to "break in" and stopped jamming. This was usually achieved in the first 35 to 50 rounds of ammo.

For a long time they had big issues with the guns jamking up and not cycling correctly. I came to the conclusion that they werent holding it solid enough to allow the kick to cycle it enough.. they almost cussioned it.. we went back a few times and with many reminders to hold on tight, they have way better luck now.. we were shooting a beretta, walther and a ruger so it wasnt a matter of a cheap firearm by all means so maybe the newbs wernt holding them nice and firm... just some of my experience and some food for thought..

I was surprised to hear both of these men say the 1911 was unreliable. Being the standard issue pistol for the US Military for many decades, and having used it during my 10 years of service, claims of reliability issues seem unfounded. Pulling the trigger on a loaded 1911 made a BANG, and did so in some very dirty environments. Modifications available are numerous, but typically dealt with accuracy, sights, trigger pull, etc. If Somebody would never again buy a 1911, I'd think the decision had more to do with size, weight, and magazine capacity.
@ronjenkins6674
@ronjenkins6674 2 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of 1911 issues can be blamed on poor 8 round .45 magazines. If I run 7rd GI magazines I never have a problem. Wilson combat, Ed Brown, Metalform, and Chip McCormick magazines are the only 8 rounders I have tried, and they all work fine in my 1911 when it was stock. The Wilson magazine changes how a 1911 feeds to a way that is less controlled but more reliable.

All handguns owe their success, for the most part, to John Moses Browning’s 1911. It’s a great gun, but after over a hundred years it’s dated. I love mine, I carried it in the military as well, and I purchased one as well. I don’t carry it, too heavy.
@changlee1196

Military just means standardized, easily replaceable/repairable, fairly reliable. 1911s are just popular enough for the aftermarket, they function just fine and are accurate as anything else. 40,000 rds across a 50 1911s in an armory for a fiscal year without much issues (and being actually fielded)while factoring in the use and environment kinda slaps the argument away (And repeated year after year, caveat of an armorer and preventative and corrective maintenance so theres that potential). Now for the price, weight, and ergonomics... as discussed in the video, yea for sure there is not much of an argument for that price point.

@@greybeardcomics1196 everybody says it's dated but nobody ever says how it's dated. What functionality are you missing in a 1911 that you need or that makes self defense more difficult? Most of the issues I can think of are minor and wouldn't really have any functional effects, especially if you opt out of the 45 caliber and get it in 9 for increased performance though, to be honest, what's actually going to stop a 45 round on an assailant short of body armor? And if they do have body armor why not aim at the head? And even if you dont do you expect most assailants are battle hardened and mission driven individuals that have made it their mission to kill you or steal from you? If you actually do get someone battle hardened with armor coming to kill you, what situation would that be in? Do you think there's someone out there who would hire an elite squad to assassinate you? Reality is, even the poorer performing 45 caliber will stop anyone 99.9999999% of us would ever run into and need to stop with a single bullet as long as it hits body or head cleanly. Take away one of those 9s behind the decimal and that's who it's stopping by hitting extremities.

I’ve had over 12 Colt 1911s. They all ran perfectly. Never had to do anything to “get them to run”. People often run into problems when they go off factory parts and fitting unless proper fitting is done. You can change the sights on 1911 to anything you want. They are never “molded in”. Just have to stake the front sight if they aren’t dovetailed. New rock islands are cmc so a lot better. You don’t “turn your 1911s into 9mm, they do come that way. I love 1911s and would never trash talk a quality one. My choice for carry is M&P Shield and M&P9 for home defense though.

About 30-35 years ago, I bought my first gun: an R. G. (aka Rohn) 38 Special. It was an absolute piece of junk. But the only time I ever had to draw a gun, an entire gang of young tough guys suddenly remembered a previous engagement elsewhere. I'm astounded you didn't like your Rock Island Armory m1911a1. One of my guns in my carry rotation is their m206, along with a Taurus 856 Ultra Lite, a Charter Arms Undercover, and after my birthday next month, the gun my wife got me for a birthday present, the Charter Arms Police Undercover. As an add on to my comments:The Rock Island Armory m 206 is flat out awesome!!! I'm on my second one, but only because my first one was dao with the bobbed hammer, and I wanted to switch to the conventional da/sa hammer. A friend wanted to buy my old one, so I went ahead with it. My old one was a Christmas present from my wife 5 1/2;years ago. I bought it at a black Friday sale, and it had a problem with lock up. I called RIA customer service and they told me to send it in. I apprised them that I wanted to wait till after Christmas, so that I could open it for Christmas. They said they'd put a priority on it, and have it back in time. They had it back in time for me to open it Christmas morning!!! That's EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! It gets even better. A couple of years later, I noticed the barrel had canted. I sent it in, and they REPLACED THE GUN AT NO CHARGE AND WITH NO QUESTIONS!!! Rock Island Armory flat out ROCKS!!! This is in sharp contrast to the (in my opinion) rather shabby treatment I received from Smith and Wesson.

Before the hate begins, I was a fully licensed gunsmith in New York City and personally verified two with blow chambers, another with a NYPD trigger that failed in a way to produce a dead trigger (fail to fire) and all the phase 3 malfunctions that required the extractors to be replaced and the slides modified. All these defects were subsequently repaired in the various revisions. Personally, I don't like the grip angle and the short dwell time to barrel unlocking. Everything breaks or can be broken. There is no infallible firearm. That is simply reality.

And you can get reasonable ones that work at least according to many reviewers exceptionally well like the new Rock Island. Every day carry heck no eight shots. And then on top of that it weighs like 35 pounds or whatever but it’s a lot but everyone should have one in their collection. It’s the fun gun to shoot. When you have friends at the range say check this out.

Interesting perspectives...I believe that the "wand chooses the wizard." I just don't like the feel of Glocks...It was the second pistol I bought and I graduated to the Sig 226 (original from Germany) and since then have been in love with Sig Sauer. Ruger's both revolvers and Semi-auto's are my second loved pistols followed by Colt 1911.

One of the worst pistols I ever shot was an M1911 when I was in the Air Force, shortly before the switch to the M9 was made. Horrible experience. I believe the stampings indicated it was refurbished in 1978. Turned me off to 1911’s until I got a RIA 1911 years later on sale that my buddy convinced me to get. Same crappy “military” sites but it shot excellent and never had any issues with it. I still have it.

I'm sorry about your military negative experience. Mine was totally different at Ft. Bragg in 1970. Instructor went with a very positive approach telling our platoon at the very first that we were going to be first-rate marksmen and then proceeded to make it so. My first 1911 1a was/is a former military built in 1952. Love it and when at a local indoor range the range officer (off duty policeman) asked to shoot it and loved it as well. I have about 2 dozen in my collection. My EDC is either a S&W 442 when that is all I can conceal or any one of several modern polymer 9mm or one S&W M&P 40. Again I love the 1911, but I love the Ford Model T as well, but I wouldn't pick one as my daily driver. For those young whipper snappers who don't know I believe the Model T was produced from 1908 to 1927. So it is contemporary to the1911.

I probably carry a Glock 26 most of the time but I still shoot the 1911 better than any other pistol. @@situated4 Obviously, no contest! I live in CA (please, I've heard it all, so I can do without the Commiefornia references), so I'm limited to the Gen 3. Since my State limits rounds to 10, the capacity is not really an issue. Also with the Glock, the triggers are horrible as are the sights.

@@eriktruchinskas3747 that’s what the argument seems to be. I bought a kimber less than a year ago and it had a handful of failure to feeds on the first 50 rounds. I took it apart and lightly polished the hammer face, the surface of the slide the hammer rides on, firing pin block, barrel and guide rod. I shot 50 more rounds without a hiccup after that. It has a very low round count, and it has a 500 round break in period. I just feel like a lot of people don’t give kimbers a chance after a few mags. It’s a nice firing gun but I would assume because of the tight tolerances it causes reliability issues

I have had absolutely terrible experiences with polymer-frame pistols, especially compact pistols. I had a Kel-Tec PF-9 and it was genuinely painful to shoot for anyone who tried it. There was just too little mass below the slide, so when it slammed back forward after recoil, it would slam the trigger against the still-depressed trigger finger. After running just a couple of the very small mags (I think 7 rounds apiece), my trigger finger was noticeably swollen. My brother eventually gave it the name Mr Slappy, I gave it away, and I have only looked back to tell this story to anyone who will listen. As contrast, my CZ 75B is a beautiful machine and a joy to shoot. It is a full-size pistol, which is pretty much always going to be more comfortable, but it's also steel framed and feels like an actual gun instead of a particularly dangerous toy.
@cackles1005

@Kev Campbell While it is true that a Kel-Tec is not a Glock, it is a representative extreme. I have shot several polymer-frame pistols, including Glocks, a Kahr, Springfield XD, and M&P Shield, and they all have the rocking issue due to lack of balance. Followup shots are just abysmal and comfort isn't great even with the full-size ones. If they work for you, though, that's really what matters - I'm just giving my review and opinion.

One of the few I would never ever buy again: AMT 1911 clone .45 "Hardballer." Defective from the factory, it was pretty much a single shot due to the extractor hole being drilled off-center. I had replaced it 2 times and it lasted a magazine or so before constant failure to extracts. Then I read in the now gone "Gun Tests" magazine about the extractor being off-center. Traded it at a gun show for a new Colt Officer's Model Series 80. A fine handgun until the recoil plug broke (the tab) and flew off when shooting. Replaced it with a guide rod and it worked until round 756 (yes, I kept records) when I brought it down out of recoil to find there was no front sight to pick up. It had flown off. All this with factory hardball and light cast SWC target loads. My love of 1911s took a severe blow. AMT went bankrupt and deservedly so. When I get back to the States, I shoot some the handguns ---semi-autos and revolvers---I have back home and the one that is most comfortable for me, most natural to point (I love that low bore line) is a Glock 19. Never had a malfunction and nothing has broken in over 5,000 rounds. I would still love a 1911 to shoot, preferably something from Wilson Combat, but for carry and self defense, I think I would be hard pressed to give up my Glock.
