Remember under UK law if you fall ill whilst on leave from work you should report it to your employer immediately. They are required to re-classify your absence as sickness leave and give you your holiday entitlement back.
@hairyairey2 жыл бұрын
If your employer doesn't pay full pay for sickness leave it would be better just to lose the holiday though. There's no legal requirement to switch annual leave to sickness leave - where do you get this idea from? "Statutory Sick Pay" is very low, £99.35 a week for up to 4 weeks. For a 40 hour working week that's less than £2.50 an hour!
@dank95612 жыл бұрын
@@hairyairey It was a court ruling a few years ago that said employees have the right to request their annual leave returning if they fall ill whilst on annual leave. See the Citizens Advice web page titled "If you can't take your holiday because you're ill" - copied below. "If you’re ill on holiday or before you’re due to go, you can tell your employer that you want to be treated as off sick instead. That means you can save your holiday entitlement for when you’re able to enjoy it. Follow your employer’s normal rules for letting them know you’re ill. Ask them to record your absence as sick leave instead of holiday." You're right however it depends what sick pay your employer entitles you to whether it's worth asking - I get full pay from day 1 with a doctor's note required if it lasts more than a week.
@dank95612 жыл бұрын
The same information is also at the top of the gov.uk web page "Taking sick leave": If they're ill just before or during their holiday, they can take it as sick leave instead."
@hairyairey2 жыл бұрын
@@dank9561 Yes, that is quite correct HOWEVER as you point out it's likely to cost you money to convert it. Then there's the question of whether your company uses the Bradford Factor (or any other intrinsically evil method to stop "sickies") to decide whether or not to discipline you for sickness absences. Although if it's for a condition that qualifies as a disability that employer could well end up at tribunal on the losing side.

Once you've had full on flu it makes you kinda mad at people who have a cold for a couple of days and then tell everyone it was flu. I had flu which caused viral pleurisy many years ago, had to lay on a steamy bathroom floor gasping for breath for days on end, scary.

I have had flu and pleurisy and it's ghastly, that was 25 years ago and I still have scaring on my lungs from that. The worst flu I had was in 2017, I caught it before I got vaccinated. I had been working overseas and this was close to the end of my visa. I was in hospital for a week and the consultant told me that I wasn't well enough to fly for at least two weeks. He gave me a covering letter to say that was the reason for my overstaying the visa. On getting home I was having serious headaches and a constant dripping nose. At first the GP said it was post virus drip, but after a month he sent me to ENT. The ENT consultant tested the fluid and sent me for an MRI. I was told that I had a hole in my skull between my brain and sinus, the dripping fluid was actually Cerebrospinal fluid and I needed urgent brain surgery to repair the hole in my skull. I was told that I had had viral encephalitis and the swelling of my brain had pushed out a thin piece of skull and torn the meninges. That was another five days in hospital. The hole was patched with fascia from my left thigh which was now very sore. Coming round after the surgery I did have some really incredible hallucinations.

I'm a taxi driver myself, the opposite side of the country to you but in a situation like you had, its cheeky but not uncommon. Some airports charge ridiculous amounts for us to wait for our passengers and it then begs the question "who pays that charge?" What I would have done as a driver is 1) tracked your flight 2) ensured you had my office contact number *and* a direct dial straight to me 3) waited for confirmation from you that you were clear from the airport terminal and literally ready to get in the car At which point I'd have *then* entered the airport grounds to fetch you. Nice and easy 😁

I too have had terrible issues with taxi drivers abroad in England and in Germany. Same issue of wanting to be paid in cash abd inflating the fee, especially at the airport on departing flight probably because they know you are in a rush.

I worked for an express parcel and courier company years ago and we had a contract with both BA and British Caledonian to deliver lost and misplaced luggage the same day of arrival or the next before 10:30 am if the late collection run. The relief on peoples faces when we delivered it as most thought it was lost for ever. If they were tourists staying at a hotel our drivers insisted they delivered to the room and not the hotel porters, just in case of further delays to it. We also security sealed them in front of the airline staff so any claims for missing contents was down to the airline or customs as they would have searched and sealed them also. Hope it arrived OK.

I've been ill myself... mine stared from Covid and became I think a throat infection and since I have bad sinuses anyway, means near constant-to-constant bringing up mucus, which would turn into coughing it up until vomiting multiple times if/when I'd try to go to bed (I say as though that's passed. lol) and occasional sweats from that. I'm on antibiotics too! mine's just a 5 day course... only got 4 tablets left. That said, getting that ill when on holiday, visiting people... that's rough. Really, really sorry you had that, and then having to run like that whilst ill too... You really have all of my sympathy for all of that. As a few others have said, one or two missed videos really isn't a big deal. Those of us who follow regularly know you put a lot of work in and that you care, and we care too, so really, don't worry about it. I am glad though to hear you're on the mend... hopefully you'll keep improving until you're better fully. Those chains of illnesses are super unfun. One thing btw that was really good for my throat when I had the 'rona was super cold (like put in the freezer for hours until it's basically a slushie cold) fizzy drinks like coke or, the one I had a lot, apple lucozade. Really soothed it and helped with the mucus too. No idea if it'll help for you, but thought I'd share for if it might. Also, generally any warm/hot beverages really are helpful (though not milky ones... dairy's not good for sinus stuff apparently), but lemon honey and a bit of ground/powdered ginger with hot water (I do 4 tsp of both lemon and honey, but however you prefer it) should help a lot specifically. Oh, and hot fruit beverages that they put in the tea aisle. Mostly the steam and the warm liquid loosening things (guess who was sat, googling symptoms and looking things up online a lot on their phone at ??? o'clock when they couldn't even lie down to try to sleep!). Hope any of that helps and again, really hope you feel well again soon.

Hi Alanna, so sorry to hear of your recent illness. The flu bug seems to be everywhere at the moment. Here in Australia, they are really pushing the flu vaccinations big time, due to so many people becoming sick. Last week, I was suffering from a nasty backache. Not sure exactly how it started, but the pain made it very difficult to even walk. The pain finally eased yesterday and since then, I have been able to get around again. Hence, I can certainly identify with your illness. Your experience at the airport is absolutely scary. That person serving going to lunch without anyone replacing them is absolutely disgraceful. Your flu experience reminded me of my first trip to New Zealand, when I caught the flu. Not a very nice experience, especially when away from home. Anyway, wishing you a speedy recovery. All the very best. Rob.

Having tested +ve for Covid on Wednesday, so I do sympathise, sweating like I never have before, headache, tired sleeping like forever. Annoyingly I started a new job about 3 weeks ago. A job I love, with colleagues who are brilliant. I suppose having not worked full time and with other people for something like 10yrs. What was I expecting. I do hope you get better, welcome back home.

I can certainly confirm that isolation has led to worst case colds and flu. Back in December I went down with the worst cold I have ever had on Xmas Day and had no sense of taste or smell and ended up back in bed at 8pm. Not surprisingly it took me a month to fully shake it.

I don't get ill often myself. But when I do it freaks everyone out. I pretty much run a high temp and shiver from fever for like 2-3 days. Then I get better. From my point of view I get sleepy and I wake up 3 days later all confused on drenched sheets

I’m really sorry that you and all your family caught the flu. I read that the flu season was going to be horrendous but I failed to appreciate that it was this bad. I’m glad you’re healing and I hope that you’re no longer coughing up blood. I also hope you have as good a weekend as possible and that the butler is taking good care of you. Thank you for taking the time to let us know what is going on with you. I hope you make a full recovery soon and that all your family are recovered.

Hi Alanna, it seems wrong clicking the "Like" button on your video today given the terrible time you've been having but good to hear you are getting better albeit very slowly. Best wishes

I remember having a heavy flu in my twenties and at one point I could feel my heart beating in my temples and thought, "wow, I could die from this"??? It was like cannons going off. I didn't die btw.😀 Yeah, that's true about isolating, we have a disease deficit built up over the last couple of years.

I had flu once when I visited my mum for Christmas. As long as your parents looked after you that's the main thing! 🙂
