Vince Young single handedly won the national championship game against USC, was named rookie of the year in the NFL, made a couple pro bowl teams, the cover of Madden football one year, and had a pretty impressive record as a starter. Not to say he didn't have issues.

Great content. Brodie Croyle (just to ad to the story), his father, John Croyle, was an all-American defensive end at the University of Alabama under the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. This had a major impact on Brodie's decision to attend Alabama. John Croyle (Brodie's father), is another whole story all it's own. Upon graduating the University of Alabama, instead of going to the NFL, John decided to open a Christian home for abused and neglected children in 1974, called Big Oak Boys Ranch. Brodie Croyle now serves as the associate executive director.

High school isn't the best marker for a quality QB. When these kids get into college, it's a whole different game. Brock Berlin is still the best high school QB that I've ever seen. He played at a small private school called Evangel in North Louisiana that started in class 2A his Freshman year then was winning 5A state titles in the super dome against huge schools like West Monroe by his senior year. They kept going up to the next level because there was no competition in the smaller classes. Evangel was the first school in this region to run a 4 and 5 wide shotgun formation every single play. It was amazing to watch.

The main reason Brock Berlin's QB ranking was so inflated as a recruit was because he was at the forefront of a revolutionary new offense that went no huddle, deployed 4-5 WRs on every play, and threw the ball 40+ times a game. He played HS football in Louisiana in the late 1990s, where 95% of HS teams still ran the triple option, and passed the ball 15-20 times at most. Berlin's HS coaches attended summer football coaching seminars where college and NFL coordinators would hash out ideas with high school coaches. It was in these annual seminars where his high school coaching staff encountered groundbreaking new offensive ideas by names like Mike Leach and Urban Meyer. Consequentially, this placed Brock's HS team light years ahead of the competition for Louisiana HS football. A lot of scouts and opposing high school coaches were so overmatched at defending this new scheme that they got dazzled by the hype and numbers themselves, and proclaimed Brock Berlin the most uniquely talented QB they'd ever seen for being able to make it run. This explosive new offense was the primary reason Brock went 52-0 as a starting QB in high school. What I'm saying here is that no one ever stopped to consider the possibility that while Brock Berlin did indeed have the measurables scouts look for, they overlooked the possibility that he may also be something of a "system QB" who has inflated stats. That never really entered into anyone's mind back then. The mentality of coaches back then was that no one would attempt running such a sophisticated offense in the first place unless they had a generational blue chip QB prospect who could make it work. The offense itself was just so cutting edge that few could see past the bells and whistles to honestly evaluate Berlin. One of the few who could, though, was his first college head coach, Steve Spurrier. This is why their relationship didn't get off to a great start, and why Brock was compelled to transfer. He just thought Spurrier was being unnecessarily critical of him and was trying to tear him down in order to build him back up into the type of QB he wanted him to be instead. The reality is that Spurrier saw the shortcomings in his game, and didn't protest much when he asked to transfer. I know Florida underwent a coaching change to Ron Zook around this same time when Spurrier decided to give the NFL a try, but the damage was already done. Spurrier wasn't convinced Berlin was his next Danny Wuerffel- who won a Heisman trophy and national championship at Florida in 1996 while also coming from Louisiana. That's really the inside story on Brock Berlin. It wasn't so much that he physically peaked in high school as much as he was never honestly evaluated by talent scouts in the first place. He was running an offense so far ahead of it's time that no one knew where to look for the flaws in his game. They just saw the measurables of height and arm strength, combined with outrageous stats, and assumed that whatever few weaknesses he possessed were, his college coaches would be able to train them out of him to make him better since they'd offer the best coaching he would ever receive. They didn't consider that perhaps his unprecedented HS offense was actually instilling some bad habits that would be difficult for any coach mitigate once he ran up against superior on-field competition against equally talented defenders.

I just moved to Jacksonville, and my freshman year was his Sr. His High school was on the outside of the city so I figured they were one of the schools in the area (in which there were several) that had money and their campus, stadium and facilities looked like a college’s, but their actual team wasn’t that good…I was quickly informed, “they got Tebow” so during a jamboree I saw Tebow take a qb draw up the middle, breaking a tackle from every single member of the defense. It looked dumb. Like it was a video game and their tackle rating was 25 and his break tackle rating was 99. I’m a Georgia fan, so knowing he was going to Florida, i knew he was going to be a problem.

That championship game Texas Vs USC was historic! I watched it live and was pumped and couldn't wait for it and it lived and surpassed all expectations! That was one of the best football games I ever seen and Vince Young outplayed not one but two Heisman winners Leinart and Bush and it's not like USC played bad they all killed it including Lendale White he played lights out too! Man that game was awesome and VY was just sick in that game and really that whole season!

Vince Young's Texas v USC game is one of the few college games I've ever watched, including my alma mater (in the President's Athletic Conference... not exactly AAA lol). I don't even like Texas, but I became a Vince fan and was really sad at how his career turned out. But that bowl game was unforgettable. And as a Jets' fan since Heidi, thanks for reminding me about Sanchez (sigh). Ole Miss not known for great QBs?? Uh, Archie Manning? Eli Manning? (OK, same family but still...) Excellent video, thank you. Got some laughs and brought back some memories.

Matt I definitely appreciate your videos overall. I’m not sure if this was a mistake but when speaking on Rhett Bomar you said “No division I team wanted him and no division II team wanted him. So he had to take the last resort and sign with an FCS program”. FCS is formally Division 1-AA so Bomar signing with an FCS program would only mean that the 1-A (FBS) programs didn’t offer him but he didn’t even have to entertain Division II schools.

Stafford is a hell of a lot better than you gave him credit for. He's the fastest quarterback ever to reach 40,000 yards passing. Actually correct that he was the fastest ever to reach 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, and 45,000 yards passing. He threw for over 5,000 yards one season. He made a pro bowl, took the lions to the playoffs several times and was named to the Lions All Time Team. I'm willing to bet that he will also make the Pro Football Hall of Fame after it's all said and done. Oh yeah I almost forgot he had the highest single season completion percentage of 67.2%. Hes a lot better than just alright.

Watching this older video, great stuff as always. I'm in my mid 40s and have worked as a Software Engineer for my whole career at various tech companies. Engineers get paid well, but the sales people put us to shame. Especially in anything medical or tech. That said these guys who are "normal" and in sales jobs are still probably raking it in. Especially if they have been at the same company for awhile, it means they are meeting their numbers and probably bringing home 500K-2M.

Matt, (big Clausen fan and one of my profs back in the day is a Domer so he was on the Clausen train). 100% right about him playing at Oaks Christian he was on a stacked team and yes he got the “Lebron of college football” hype. Where the “cockiness” came from Charlie Weis tried to treat him the same way he did Brady Quinn, not realizing that Quinn was a legit starting QB in attitude and preparation. Clausen was a little more flash. Clausen’s first big announcement at ND was him showing up in a limo with his HS rings acting like he was just coming to take over. Also in 07 he got busted for driving someone who was drunk and transporting booze (kid’s stuff, no mention if he had drank so not a dui). He also had an incident where he got punched in south bend while out with his family. I don’t know how annoying he was, but if you’re the staring QB at Notre Dame and still get punched in the face, you probably made a bad decision.

I played against this guy all four years in HS. That 2006-2007 OCHS team was stacked with at least 11 D1 starting players. Clausen had a terrible attitude while on the field and gave no respect to anyone off the field. That team was notorious for running up the score on any teams they played too. Zero sportsmanship.
