What Happened to Simon?

For those of you that are frustrated by my lack of responding to other burning questions that you might have, please don’t let that frustration turn into anger towards me. It’s not that I’m not addressing speculations out of a disrespect towards you. If that’s your first guess, I’m telling you it’s the wrong guess: there are other reasons. There are some parts of my private life that I just don’t feel comfortable talking about yet. I made this video because I did see that many were concerned about me. I wanted to make this video for them. And I wanted to just let people know that, even though this is a VERY huge transition in my life, I’m actually doing well in the face of it. I am doing better than I thought I would. I hope that’s the message people can walk away with, and not let their frustration out of curiosity taint that message. I’ll talk about other parts of my life only when I’m comfortable talking about them, and not a second before that, even under a deluge of pressure from others. I’m asking you: please be kind.

I get where people coming from in the comments, Simon does seem weird/off, but just consider this - Simon has made it clear in previous videos (particularly the tattoo one) that Martina was his whole reason for living. Now it seems he is genuinely trying to find reasons to live for himself, and become less codependent. Getting to know yourself and your own mind is scary. Good for Simon for having the strength.

1. I've watched Simon and Martina for 10 years. There is no one in the world that Simon loves more than Martina, and there is no one in the world that Martina loves more than Simon. Over 10 years that kind of thing is not something you can fake. 2. Martina's condition is something that most couples never have to deal with. It's a really difficult situation no matter how positive they try to portray themselves on social media. They wouldn't need to "build a ladder" if everything were peachy all the time. 3. These are 2 of the most compassionate, emotionally available, and optimistic people on the platform, if not the planet. 4. Simon and Martina are adults who have lead successful careers. They can handle making difficult decisions. That being said, I think any fan can draw their own conclusions without prying it from Simon and Martina's unwilling mouths. They're clearly going through a hard situation. Instead of getting angry at them for not telling us everything, we can support them knowing what kind of people they are. Maybe they'll tell us when they feel ready. I wouldn't want to make them share if they weren't.

The difference in voice tone and mellow personality is what surprised me the most, but enjoyed the glimpses of what we've known or seemed to know of "Simon." @@RowleyFan2 for people in the more popular religion of Catholicism, we believe in only one God. That’s not to say it’s true, but that could be what that person is saying. They might not believe in multiple Gods and other religions, but I don’t know this person personally of course. Simon might have changed his religious beliefs in his self journey and might now believe in multiple Gods, or none at all. I think that if that’s what Simon wants and needs, it’s important, and we shouldn’t be worried about him because of his beliefs on this subject. I think what’s more important is sticking by him. Him using the term “Gods” is... not a reason to be worried. Clearly, there are more things to be worried about in this video than his own personal beliefs.

Simon looks unhealthily. He said he lost 50 pounds and that he now weights 169.3LB (according to the graph) and that is under weight for a man his size. I believe he's 6'4" he should weight no less then 182LB. Sure it's only 13 pounds underweight but it's still underweight. And the darkness under his eyes is also worrying. But he is an adult we can't force him to do anything he doesn't want to do. I'm glad he made a video but he doesn't look okay.

@@phoebechan192 my husband is 6’3” and about 150. he’s always been a pretty skinny and lanky guy and it fits his body type, but he’s still underweight. he’s actually supposed to be trying to gain weight because he’s in the army and they have weight brackets you’re supposed to stay in according to your height. simon seems like he’s skinner, yes, but i hope he knows that skinny/less weight doesn’t mean healthy. the weight loss sits on him differently so while my husband seems proportional with that weight, it looks as if simon is too skinny for his body type. his eyes and face and overall demeanor look different. i hope he’s not getting depressed and i hope he’s eating well.

This isn’t the first video Simon has made where he had to be a more serious. It’s natural to use humor as a deflection, so it makes sense he’d deflect the “questions” regarding their relationship. They made content based on something they shared and loved... travel and food. Now they’ve been thrusted back into their home country, and re-acclimate to western culture. Sure there could have been struggles we will never know of, and that’s how it should be. As a long time viewer, there is a sense of unease watching the drastic transition since they first took a break then they came back only to say they’ve left Japan to come Back to Canada. After reading all the comments so far, I’m with the majority that you should do what makes you both happy. It’s okay to take a step back... and even a farther step back if need be. No one should make you feel pressured to disclose information regarding your personal lives you’re not comfortable sharing. The community you both built and have shared with will have their own opinions, and to each their own.For now, please continue working on yourselves and each other. You both have a loving community that just wants the best for you both. Much love and stay safe.

I haven’t watched them for a few years and my sister, also a fan, said you need to check out S&M... I’m seriously thinking they are separated. As someone who also has a chronic and incurable illness, it took a toll on my marriage and after a decade, we split. I always felt a kinship with this couple and pray I’m wrong. As someone who has been that kid wedged between two parents in the middle of a divorce I understand what you mean, but at the same time what they need from us isn’t people saying, “it’s a divorce, stop beating around the bush!” And bla bla bla like so many people are doing. We need to support them. We need to let them know that we’ll be there throughout the troubles and pains, we’ll be there even if it does end in the worst. They’re doing their part by keeping it civil regardless of how simple or complex it is; we need to do our part and let them come to terms with whatever’s going on personally, and let them decide how to address it from there.

Simon is almost 40 years old, I can’t believe it was yesterday I was watching a young university grad couple conquer Korea. I almost forgot that I grew up with them and aged with them because I’m 42 and I’ve changed tremendously when I hit 40. Simon is not that same young man full of energy jumping up and down and making childish but funny jokes anymore. It’s not him anymore and I’ve come to realize that. Martina is still that bundle of funny energy and I’m sure she can find a co-host to bounce jokes off of and do challenges and food tours when covid starts to end. If they are having an issue with their relationship (time apart, breakup, etc.) it might be too raw and painful to talk about, or perhaps they are trying to work it out and don’t want to give the community sadness if they get back together, or hope if they don’t. I'm glad to hear that you have been able to visit more with your family, it's important to be able to keep that connection. As a (member of the) fandom, I'm concerned that the way some people are harping on about it, the less inclined S&M may feel open to sharing...or reluctant or even resentful when they finally do because people keep pushing their theories and intrusive or demanding comments about what's going on. I wish everyone would be a bit more mindful of S&M's feelings. I realize now that you probably didn't mean it in a bad way, but even a comment like "this didn't seem genuine" could come off the wrong way or as hurtful/harmful to either of them if they read it (like it could be read/taken that you think they are "lying," which the phrasing comes off a bit accusatory.) For people who are obviously going through a hard time, for any number of reasons, this was as genuine as it's going to get while considering their right to privacy. "Transparency" may be what you are hoping for, which isn't necessarily the same as genuineness or them being disingenuous. I think this was a genuine attempt of Simon trying to address fan concerns while trying to cling on to his right to maintain privacy, while being honest about the state of his mental health, his progress, and trying to be positive and open about where he is/they are in life overall. For those of you like myself, who were only casually tracking Simon and Martina's activity, they have dropped us tons of ultimately unambiguous hints that they've separated. Since moving back to Canada (this is not close to a complete list) -neither one of them has worn their wedding / engagement ring, despite having always done so prior -they have only posted videos individually, without any reference to each other -Simon talks for 10 minutes about his life and huge transition / challenge, with zero reference to Martina -Simon has changed his appearance drastically and is working on himself -Simon prominently raises his left hand with no ring, lets the camera focus on it, leads us to think he's about to talk about why Martina is missing, then jokes it's only about his missing right hand, complete with an allusion to living life 'single' handedly. Then in the comments mentions that some people didn't get the hint about this being his way of telegraphing to the audience that he prefers not to dig into stuff (obviously, why Martina is gone from his life and vice versa). -Martina refers to Fudgy as "HIS" dog in reference to Simon on IG -Simon jokes that of late he's been grinding on himself, which one does single -This apartment obviously looks like one which is not cohabited by Martina, given her aesthetics Basically it's 100% clear they've separated. The only question now is why -- and Simon has said there are personal details about himself, likely related to the cause for this, that he's not ready to share. I think we can all probably make some relatively educated guesses as to what this might be.

It can make or break a relationship, being together 24/7 and through immense amounts of stress. I feel very fortunate that this situation has actually brought my husband and I much closer. I feel like we know each other now on this intensely intimate level that I never knew existed now. But for some couples, unfortunately, it shows you the flaws in the relationship and sometimes you cant come to a common place to fix them. My best friend disclosed that she finally realises that her husband is an alcoholic and he refuses to acknowledge it and get help so she divorced him this year. Stress on this level either brings you closer or tears you a part. It's a scary and very powerful thing. Maybe Simon and Martina were the latter, as sad as that may be

Maybe I'm rambling too, but maybe true love is not necessarily being with someone forever (or for a long time), but how intense, kind, and thorough you can love someone. Although two people may not be together anymore, their time, experiences, and love together has transformed and changed them, and they can take that into whichever direction or journey they choose. There is something deeply disturbing about human beings when they obviously are not okay, but they are putting on an act as if it a play and the show must go on. He is clearly not mentally okay, and before he said he lost the weight because of his own desires I thought he was suffering from a medical issue. Y’all need to chill with the Simon/Martina relationship speculation. It’s super obvious that they’re spending time with friends/family, rediscovering life in Canada, and figuring out new outlets for themselves creatively and from a wellness perspective. And being in a relationship with somebody with a chronic illness is really freaking hard, I have the same version of EDS Martina has, and I know it sucks for both me and my husband. I’m in pain constantly and he knows that there’s little he can do about it, and it can wear on both of us. Taking space and doing things apart is healthy and needed so we don’t get bubbled up and spiral in the depression that so often accompanies chronic illness and pain. It doesn’t mean we don’t love each other. Simon and Martina are doing what they need to do for themselves, their health, and their relationship, whatever that may be, and they don’t need to do it in front of an audience.

Depression is like this, you start talking slower and doing less. They're calling a healthy timeout, and that's ok. It's nice to see them working on themselves by connecting with friends, moving , getting a dog, being with family, exercising, meditating etc. Those are all proven tactics to lift depression. Everyone's concerned and thinks it's weird but progress is a path, and it doesn't mean he's being unsettling. He's championing himself, so he may still be sad but on the road to recovery. Let's not negate the amount of victories he has had no matter how small. And yes obviously they're spending time apart, hence the joke aka they're on good terms. it's hard when your partner suddenly gets depressed. I cannot help but be saddened by the comments about how this video is “weird” or “off putting.” I’m glad that Simon is setting goals and that he is doing what he wants and needs to do. It makes me so happy to see that he is reconnecting with his family and friends. Whatever has happened with Simon and Martina is none of our business and we should support them and be happy for them if they are happy and doing well. He wanted to share that he was happy and that he wanted us to see how he was doing even if that is not what we wanted I met them years ago in Vancouver and I supported them then and I still do now. It has been such a rough year and time for everyone and that much is clear BUT I was so relieved that Simon updated us and that he posted a video about what he has been up to and it’s so nice to hear that he has been trying to better himself in all ways. Both have them have made a huge transition from active YT to moving back home where the context is different, there are different responsibilities. Simon has mentioned two car crashes, and a broken arm is a decent injury! Hope your recovery physically, etc goes well. @davidavid_69 I firmly think that lovers shouldn't be caretakers. For those that do and it works out, great, but I think it absolutely changes the status on a person who did not ask for it. I've seen what happens when someone gets that status and never wanted it and try to tell themselves that it's "true love" to have to physically and mentally take care of the person who was your lover. It's not a good decision for a lot of people. I agree that they don't have to say anything, but it's really frustrating when people who make their relationship a HUGE part of their brand that they think they "owe no explanation". especially with the points you made about people directly financing them. It makes perfect sense that they don't want to say anything, and it makes perfect sense that people are mad about that. I think both groups have a point, I just wish both groups could be more accepting of each other. I'm personally miffed when both Simon and Martina pin and heart messages that are someone saying "They owe us nothing, everyone needs to back off" white knights because that's just not true when you choose this sort of life as a celebrity. It's a price you pay putting things out there and fostering parasocial relationships of any intimate nature. You're allowed to not disclose anything you want and people are allowed to be upset at it when previously all you ever did was disclose things. I do hope they address it in time. They should take the time they need, but I also don't agree that people being upset is unwarranted by any means.

this is probably one of the first ever channels that I actually followed and was excited for their content for more than 8 years , while I initially was worried when I saw the thumbnail , I think people shouldn't comment negatively about him and his personal life. he is not overweight and an alcoholic ( for example ) , he got fit , he is surrounded by family and friends, and is talking about a positive transition and overall wellbeing, Simon if you are reading this, turn off the comments section , we all know how social media can be a source of anxiety and can have such negative impact on overall mental health. just know there are plenty of people that support you and wish you the best always.

You spoke about it in draw my life video, in tips for a happy marriage video, in your tattoos videos, and a lot more in the more recent vlogs in Japan videos. I never fully understood what that means till now. This is the Simon you tried telling us about. And as a viewer, Im going to embrace it. I hope this gives you courage to fight your monsters. I know in the past Ive seen you and Martina as couple goals, must have had extreme pressure to keep up that image, but you are still couple goals for me, even if you are no longer one. I’ve been a silent viewer for so long. This channel has brought me so much joy and gotten me through so much, especially because I have a chronic disability and relate to building a ladder. I wish I was speaking up for the first time about something happier, but I found this video pretty unsettling. “One of those breathy, namaste voices” - except the first thing I noticed was the strange, almost monotone quality of Simon’s voice. You know at this point I think I would prefer if they stop uploading to this channel. It's just not the same if it's not Simon AND Martina. I was a subscriber since their Korea KZbin days and have come to associate it with all their lovely and fun videos. It seems like this is an end of that era which is totally fine! A lot of KZbinrs are not finding it enjoyable and stepping back which I get. I feel like to stop us all guessing I would feel much better if they make a last video just being like hey we are taking a step back and focusing on our on mental health and relationship. I guess the most disappointing part is that while I absolutely want to support the two of them, Simon especially always talked about being transparent with the community since community was so important to him. I guess I'm not used to this.. lack of transparency? So, this adjustment is kind of weird. I've been watching them since 2013/2014. The way things have dramatically changed is kind of whiplash. And the joke made was really in poor taste about addressing the elephant in the room. It's really hurtful to the community who are genuinely concerned and are waiting for the time concerns are addressed. I respect their wishes to keep things private for now. All of this, as a someone who has been consuming their content for a very long time, just feels like something is off. Ultimately, I just want them happy and well and doing okay.

Ok Beijing concern with mental health is aways valid...but really? I’m so sorry if I’m talking with someone really young And illl be polite but this is maybe not a great idea... for beginning a potential good thing even like so, being mandatory is too much of a dig at personal freedom in a grotesque way. Imagine giving that much control and responsibility to any platform it makes no sense. They wouldn’t even want it it would be a nightmare as far as justice systems anywhere works. In a perfect or almost perfect world maybe it would be a good idea but in this one is a pretty terrible one. Of course there should be institutions and work places where when I someone gets “flagged” for behaviour that may show someone is not stable for work it should be required to get therapy by a linseed practitioner. Police work is like that or it should be... psychology doc are like this too, I’m sure there’s more but they all have a big responsibility job involving peoples lives in a direct way and are linked to an actual working place. KZbin is not any of that. Also fame doesn’t make anyone crazy, is hard to deal with and can make parts of ones life really challenging but aside from that fame only tends to expose more of someone’s life to the word so it seems is such a bad thing but we don’t really pay attention to all the people who are famous but pretty well adjust... fame just like money doesn’t have the power to change someone or can impact for sure but this alone isn’t responsible for fundamental change in anyone I believe people get more power they have more chooses but aside from that they do what they want and maybe is some thing that couldn’t do with no money or fame but if is something good or bad is up to them.

After 2 years of living in Korea, the most important thing I learned was the need for a social support system. I made great friends in Korea, but that did not substitute for having my family and life-long friends around me. The second thing I learned was the understanding of this quote, "I can no longer return to where I was, because that is no longer who I am". Going home was both great and traumatic. I had to relearn to live in a place I called home. But once I was able to reconcile who I had become with where I came from, life at home got so much better, and I became a better person. I don't think people appreciate just how hard it is to reacclimate to life at home after being away, especially for as long as Simon and Martina have been away. Give them time. Let them learn how to live in the strange new world called home. Let them learn who they have become through their experiences, both as individuals and as a couple. Show gratitude for the content they have made and continue to make. And if you can't be grateful, there are a billion other KZbin channels you can watch.

I’m actually one of the viewers who catch the “simon looks tired and forlorn and even he lost lots of weight he isn’t as buff as he usually looks” but regardless, I hope what he says is true.
