Hughes went lower because of size. I think what we can prove is that size, while helpful, doesn’t guarantee success or failure in the NHL. Small guys can fail, big guys can fail. And unless you’re picked 1st or 2nd in a great draft, you’re probably at least a year or 2 out from playing in the league. In that time, a lot can change with 17 and 18 year olds. They can either grow into stars or stagnate. Quinn became one of the 3 best Defensemen in the NHL. I like Dahlin a lot, but Hughes has overcome his size challenges and I’d pick him in a redraft before Rasmus. It would be hard not to pick him 1st overall in hindsight, 3rd at the lowest.

Buffalo did just fine by drafting Dahlin. It's almost everything else that hasn't worked out for the Sabres. The Habs have made some pretty different choices in the draft, but it's sometimes hard to figure out how much of the problem is drafting and how much of it is bad development of prospects by Montreal. Hughes' size is a hard thing for GMs to overlook, no matter how much hopping up and down the scouts do at the draft table. In the history of the Canucks franchise they have never had a defenceman that was even remotely close to what Hughes is and he's not finished developing.

I think also of the Sens’ having done well via having drafted Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stützle but very much, following their respective draft years, no playoff appearance just yet. I have to wonder if this coming season will see any combo of either forward and Dahlin wanting off his NHL Draft team, with Jack Eichel, who the Sabres had drafted 2nd in 2015, having already won a Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights’ team to which those Sabres would eventually trade him.
