Makes me wonder if the computer seller and the real owner were out to scam you together. Here's how we got ripped off at a church yard sale in a similar fashion. 1. Individual buys a bed frame, mattress and headboard. They can't take it with them because they don't have a truck. They said they'll send someone to pick it up later. 2. That someone comes by and we let them load the truck. 3. Buyer returns later with a different truck wanting to know where her bed is. We couldn't prove that the someone who took the bed was or was not sent by her. She claims they weren't sent by her. We had to return her money. 4. You can bet that they were in the scam together.

To me I believe that the justice system should have an ACTUAL SYSTEM in place where the person who owes restitution ACTUALLY has to pay back the full amount that they owe NO MATTER WHAT. It's ridiculous that you only received $160 back

So glad you addressed this. I was wondering what it was you were doing with the drivers license numbers, but I see it was just to protect yourself so you could sue the bandits. Being a store owner myself I've been interested in purchasing from walk-ins, but have decided against it for the time being. It seems that I would just be inviting desperate people.

Nice informative video as always Pete. Showing those who are not aware of one of the many potential pitfalls of owning your own store/business. We like how you keep it real and show everything how it is. Real reality here. On a different note, here in Socal it was 75 degrees and sunny today. It was nice to see the snow and not have to shovel it or drive in it. Keep reality real, we appreciate it.

Hi Pete. Thank you for another great video. I totally agree with you... in trying to not incur a high overhead. I had a 2,800 sq ft warehouse, and 4 employees and the overhead killed me. I am back home and busting at the seams, but it's nice to have the lower overhead. I think it would be ideal for me to own 2 houses on a lot, or a house with another building on the lot for my business. Maybe someday :) Best wishes! -Steven

I see that the bins are numbered, and there must be a ledger to identify the contents. You could utilize 1000sq/ft and have store front 250 sq/ft and offer catalogue/touchscreen stations to order items not displayed. Display only hot items and have video screens offering other inventory in the catalogue. Love your show. Kudos.

Interesting comment about the shop. We just started as part time ebayers (the serious selling side, anyway, been buying and selling a bit for years), and have often wondered that question about brick/mortar vs. online. Your statement on the supply side advantage being greater than the selling side didn't occur to me. You are one of the few youtubers I've seen that demonstrates you actually do what you say you do, has common sense (not that common), and a level head for business. Thanks for the vids. Sucks, that "hot" computer, does seem like it could have been a coordinated scam, as some have suggested below, especially the church bazaar comment. Probably not worth pursuing, except maybe on principle, to put one over on the bastards, for a change. ;-) Keep your head up! Good luck.

Love your channel (which I just ran across), and learn a lot. I look for a collect milk glass, but I have also found other very valuable glass. I don't keep the glass that's really worth something. If I can make the proper amount of money on it, I just don't keep it. I love finding something for a few bucks that's worth a whole lot more - which we all would. I'll be watching. I'm in Minnesota so I can greatly relate to hating winter. It is also a dangerous climate if you have a tendency to slip and fall.

So true about the overhead on a brick and mortar. This is why I have resisted the urge to expand. I prefer a one man business, with minimal overhead. This gives me a competitive advantage over sellers who have storefronts and employees to pay for.

To me, it seems like the hardest part of the business is having to occasionally deal with stolen merchandise. When someone comes in and has everything you need to validate the purchase, it seems like you've done everything you can possibly do to ensure the merchandise is 'legit'. Sucks that you had to deal with that Pete.

Sometimes I sell large items before I can find an appropriate box. Some of the very large boxes are the hardest to find. Problem is, there's no guarantee you will find one the proper size in a short time frame, and with a buyer waiting for their item it gets stressful. For a large item like that, are you going to a custom box store or furniture store or something where finding the right size box is almost a sure thing? I've had to ship a rigid wheel chair in the past which can only be partially disassembled and recently a portable air cleaner and finding a suitable box for either was not an easy task. Even the place I get my bubble wrap rolls from do not have anything much larger than what you can get at Home Depot or any moving store. Good vid. Always enjoy them and always learn something new!

I would be carful to buy stolen stuff .. When I was 16-17 I bought a bike frame from a friend lol (not a friend) .. Well long story short it was stolen .. Cops made me strip the bike back down give the frame back 20 hours of community service was rewarded with a 200.00 fine .. Also I paid 80 for the frame .. So ruffly 300.00 later I could have bought a new haro or dyno for that money ... That was the first and last purchase from a friend for 10 years .. I paid top dollar for years to avoid that whole nightmare as a kid .. Know what your buying before buying .. Get a paper receipt with the person signing it .. If they don’t sign it’s a red flag .. Keep up the good work Pete ..

Here in the UK, if the theif was caught, he would be ordered to pay the price of the $500, pluse court costs, if he could no pay all up front, then an "Attchment of earnings would be placed on him, ensuring that you got the money back from whatever earnings he got, so if he was on state handouts then an amount would be deducted from that to pay you, until the debut was paid off. I feel for you being scammed like that.

One little thing I have against good will and value village hunters; people who donate items to those stores are from people who are trying to help the less fortunate out by donations... now being a parasite to that system just isn’t right... flipping off eBay, garage sales, Craigslist, that’s all cool... but good will and value village, and Salvation Army type stuff (that isn’t hustling, it’s stealing from the poor) ... in my eyes.

Here's what happened when my camera got stolen, years ago. The cops called me and said they found it at a local pawn shop, and wanted to go with me to pick it up. I met them there, and they told me that I couldn't just walk in and recover my own property - I'd have to buy my own stolen camera and gear back from the pawn shop! They said it "wouldn't be fair to the shop owner" to make him take the loss. So that's my experience with local law enforcement and stolen goods in Florissant MO, or maybe Dellwood or Hazelwood - there are dozens of individual municipalities in St Louis County and unless you happen to have a map with you, you're never sure exactly which one you're in at any given time.

Pete Question for you. You said if you had to do it over you would have 1000sq ft building with 500 front/500 back. Looking at your store layout, why don't you just close the doors from front of shop, move out what doesn't sell and condense 2 rooms, then hire more employees to do photos, processing, listing, shipping in the back half of the store?

There should be a centralized database that you can go to that people can report stolen items with their serial number or identifying markers (obviously you would need evidence to prove you owned the item) that people can reference to see if an item is reported stolen. I know they do have these for phones, but it would stop a lot of this hot shit coming into pawn shops or reselling establishments.
