You know, game sense really does worsen horror game experience. When I played this game, it took me until about the first oxygen tick to have this thought: "You know, having an imprecise oxygen meter kill the player and forcing them to replay the past hour or so would be quite frustrating. So assuming the game is well-designed, the oxygen meter is probably tied to position triggers. While we're at that, a monster you can't see ripping up the sub would also be frustrating, so that's not going to happen until we reach a proper ending." Of course, there are ways to die in this game, but they are well-within the player's control. The scripted fire is slow, loud, and easy to fight. And all you need to do to not ram into a wall is to not suck.
@thesaladballs2 жыл бұрын
all valid points. my only counter point is, they aren’t there for any purpose other than atmosphere, and (here’s the kicker) *personally* they did just that excellently. and i know, that’s highly subjective and not really what you’re looking for, but i suppose that’s video games for you😪
@anonymousapproximation85492 жыл бұрын

It's a bit of a paradox- any actually substantiated threat of death, any fulfillment of it, will immediately take the player out of the experience, so good horror experiences will most likely not involve actually dying. As soon as you cash in all the suspense you've been building up, it's all gone, and the player will be frustrated, if not disappointed in your mediocre jumpscare or end state. So, this game does well within the psychological limitations set on it, I think.
@CloneLoli2 жыл бұрын
@@ferociousfeind8538 What? But the best horror experiences have death as a consequence, it leads to real tension. Not saying good horror games have to include death but there is a reason horror games used to be challenging, plus many horror games with death involve quicker segments with safety afterwards otherwise dying could reset too much progress. The reason the best jumpscares in RE work is because they normally introduce a threat that can halt your progress or waste your resources. Horror games should strive for a good balance of challenge, loss and atmosphere.

I'm curious, as you took the pictures of the targets, were the actual images in reverse order from how they appeared when you play it "normally" (meaning the images are fixed to the physical positions), or did they appear in the same order (meaning the images are fixed to the order they're found in)? From what you show here, it looks like the "last" image (the one you went straight to) resembled the kind of images you'd normally see at the end (artificial looking wall with rectangular "windows"), which suggests that the images are fixed to the physical positions. If that's the case, I'm curious how that affects one of the scripted moments, when you take one of the targeted pictures (I believe it's one of the skeletons) and the first time you take it, there's a creature in the background, but when you take it again the creature is gone. I think it was maybe the 3rd or 4th image when you do them in the normal order. I'm curious, does that little event still take place in the same sequence based on number of targets completed (and therefore in a different image than it would appear the normal way), or does it appear in the same image/position and therefore later in the sequence of creature-revealing events? I hope all of that makes sense and parses out correctly.

some people have effectively modded the game/cheated to allow to see through the porthole normally; all elements you need to photograph are physical objects in the game world. In fact, the world outside is a full 3D environment you navigate in, and pictures are exactly that: pictures of the outside of the ship taken in real time (with a few exception like a fish eye staring at you) As for the background angler, its a stil, rough 3D object of just the face (then disappears into a black nothing) that exists as a piece in the actual world, it just disappears after you take a picture of it. Its also (not 10% sure) the exact same thing that crashed throught he back of the ship on the ending
