Most Savate kicks are designed to be done wearing shoes . They pop you with the hard toe or heel in a whip like fashion so it hurts a lot more than it might look like. They pick very precise targets. It's a great art to study on it's own or as a supplement to what you already do.

Come to think of it, wearing shoes would make crescent kicks a much more viable technique because the side of the sole of a shoe could easily cut someone or leave a more damaging mark than the side of your foot (always felt like crescent kicks don't really have anything on them), so perhaps some of the kung fu styles that make heavy use of crescent kicks were intended to be thrown with shoes on?

Savate didn't grow to its full potential because it was not professional in France, meaning the fighters (the "tireurs") had to get a regular job to pay the bills and were doing that only because of their passion for it. Turning PRO meant switching to Kickboxing or Muay Thaï. It has always been knowned as one of the best school for standup fighting and I wish I had been curious enough to choose that instead of Karate 1st. There are specific rules for you to score when kicking (the way you prepare your kick, you can only hit with the shoe etc .). When you come from Karate or Muay Thaï, it's frustrating and you are never at the "proper" distance to throw your own attacks. Result, you get lit up by so many kicks before you even realize 😀. They are all about combinations and movement. It's beautiful.

Well, that in general is what you'd tell an infighter facing an outfighter. Does that work 100% of the time? Nope. In fact, it probably works less often than it doesn't because it's hard to close the distance with a really good outfighter with an excellent footwork. Meanwhile, you'll be eating kicks and punches as you try to close in on him. At the end of the day, it's the skill level that matters, of course. There's one more thing, though. Savate works really well with shoes. The whole point of kicking of this style is that they wear relatively heavy shoes with pointed hard tops. What they do is obliterate the liver with precision kicks in those. It really doesn't take much of effort in that kind of shoe to do that if you're really accurate, which is what they train 24/7. This guy held off a lot of times during this spar if you pay close attention

How to beat a kikboxer as a boxer, start using long range combinations, shots like the power jab adding some shots after it and the leaping hook.
@danlewis7707
@danlewis7707 5 ай бұрын
Both fighters face a disadvantage, a savate practitioner relies on footwork and boxing to bail them out when their opponent gets inside their range but a boxer must find a way to get inside and past the savate fighters kicks to do damage. Each fighter faces risks but the Savate fighter can mitigate his disadvantage and still maintain his ability to deal damage where as the boxer must try to get inside and risk a debilitating kick to the temple or chin or the leg kicks which can eliminate the boxer's footwork and sap his energy in order to do damage. If the savate fighter is conservative he should pull ahead. However, the Savate fighter has done several more flamboyant techniques, if this continues his boxer opponent could learn the timing of these attacks and get inside. Once he does he can do significant damage.

With mixed results depending highly on the skills and circumstances of both fighters. The first encounter was won by the Savate tireur, in Paris France. The second one was won by the boxer against the same Savate opponent, in London England. The story goes that this was the reason for practioners of Savate to learn boxing. Aaaaah Savate... beautiful, elegant Savate! Created by French Sailors, used to great effect on the wild streets of Paris. They teach Paris Cops Savate you know. Savate literally means "Old Shoe", because Savateurs wear specialized shoes when fighting.

Glad to see Savate getting some love. Though no style is better then another in general - ALWAYS it is the attitude, person and situation. This boxer was much less skilled but it does not matter because I have seen good boxers - I don’t get to see good savate very often.

I can see a lot of Modern karate within Savate! But the path or both arts obviously differed hard, I hope Savate never gets watered down.

More like modern Karate took a lot from Savate, for real. During the modernization period of Japan, the Japanese brought in many foreign military advisors to train their army. Including many from France. They introduced Savate training into the Japanese army, and guess who was in the army at that time? The son of the founder of modern Karate, not sure of the name, so I won't say it. But anyway, he was influenced by that experience and that is why modern Karate has similarities with Savate. But don't take my word for it, look it up!

From my perspective the boxers stance is his problem. If he wasn’t so spread out his reaction would be twice as fast. I would like to see how a Muaythai fighter checks the kicks.

As someone who started at a traditional boxing gym and transitioned into Muay Thai then mma, I’d argue that showing these videos show almost the same extent of people who don’t know how to grapple going into a wrestling match… show boxers who know how to check at the very least or even how to chain their punches with their kicks and vice versa… you’ll see how boxing can definitely be efficient in non boxing rules. I’ve won my first few kickboxing fights by being self aware with my checks and using kicks to close my distance then ending the show with boxing combinations. Hopefully I can record a sparring session sometime this week and send to you.

Its called boxer vs savate, not kickboxer vs savate lol. As soon as you start dabbling in checks and kicks, you aren't even a boxer anymore what are you about? And Savateurs can punch well, so your point is moot.

This is what i love.. in many such fights, i have seen the martial artist will try n work like a boxer and so obviously gets outclassed... Here he is using his strength irrespective of his opponent being a boxer.. results will differ in many cases if this is done.

Here the Savate tireur is only doing assaut, the light contact version of Savate. If he had done any combat, there would have been an immediate KO.

Too bad he does not wear his kicking shoe though, kicking the sheens in savate is the equivalent of the jab for a boxer. If the boxer lifts a foot it will get kicked on the sheen, for one it does hurt but the thing that's attrocious for a boxer is that you'll have the hardest time to find your balance to throw a powershot and everytime you lose balance is a window for a savater they have a lot of tools for a lot of different vulnerable target on your body, even with boxers gloves on, the puncturing kick will find its way around or through it and hit the temple of the head or the liver or sternum, these will quickly make you forget about the pain on your sheens. Also you can easily step on the boxer frontfoot to kick him in the mouth when he'll duck laying his torso backward, but you have to gauge before hand to see how he dodges your head kick.

I like how Savate uses shoes. It's not only realistic, but kicking with the toe is sneaky due to the extra reach, plus it hurts with a shoe.

Thanks for the commentary on this video. What you call axe kicks aren't. They are reverse kicks, with the dole if the shoes aimef at slapping the face or lowering the guard. This club is in Taiwan and is called Cyrano Savate Club Taichung.

This reminds me of when I did Karate Tournament fighting. I'm a Kung Fu stylist with various kicks that include; front, side, pointed toe round house, shuffle front kick, along with switch kicks, various side kicks, delayed kicks, low high kicks, crescent kicks. The thing that obviously is throwing off the Boxer is; the constant stance switching of the kicker due to, depending what kicks he is throwing. Rear round house kick, front round house kick which is faster, lead side kick, doubling on side kicks (follow up) via lead side kick. Sweeping the Boxer's lead leg, sweeping the Boxer's lead leg with back hand follow up. Also spinning back hand. Now there are levels. A yellow belt won't be able to do against a good Boxer what an Experienced Black belt will. For the Boxer; their edge would be what I already mentioned before. Catching that switching of stances. That's were it has to be timed correctly to score against an experienced kicker. I prefer the kickers style of Martial Arts because... it works far more efficiently for me. Not because I believe that it's better than Boxing. I'm 6' 1 @ 180. Anyone remember Kick Boxing Legend Don "The Dragon" Wilson? He's from a Kung Fu system White Dragon Kung Fu. His style, identical/ similar to my fighting style. Cool video

need context. knowing whether they agreed to fight for real, or spar with decreased power, is important. they would both have a winning chance if both can use full power, but if not, the boxer who uses punches only would be at a major disadvantage. this is because in a technical game where you can't KO, the savate guy has way more moves. if you have a set of limited moves that you honed, you should be trying to KO, not spar (if you want to win). the only way a boxer can win stylistically is if the savate guy is a newb.
