hotsweetness99 For purely mechanical ignitions it is absolutely true. Only a digital key can stop that, and if they key is already digital you might as well go wireless. More people leave their keys in the car than throw them out of the window. A wireless key can stay secure in your pocket avoiding both problems while being harder to steal. Most car thefts these days are of older cars with mechanical ignitions.

On a snowy morning I started my car and proceeded to brush off my car in a hotel parking lot. I then drove 50km away to a ski hill with no notifications of a missing key. Upon arrival I turned off my car then attempted to put it in acc mode but it said the key was missing. My key fell out of my pocket at the hotel in the snow and I was 450km from home. I called the hotel to ask if they could look for the key and they were unable to find it. My mom had to drive all the way out to the hotel and found the key within 5 minutes, then drive to the ski hill where I was just finishing my day of snowboarding. This all happened with my 2013 Mazda 3 a year and a bit after I bought it.

Mazda's keyless entry is pretty bad. Sometimes I have to hold the key in the air for 10 seconds before the car recognizes I have the key, even with a new battery in it. The car is supposed to auto lock when I walk away from it in which it beeps once and locks but sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. The Mazda dealership just tells me they couldn't re create the problem. My Nav is terrible and now that my car is 3-4 years old my nav doesn't even work when i press the nav button nothing happens. Paid $60 for the nav to get fixed in which all they did was update it. (I can do that at home) Worked for a few days and stopped working again.

One thing that I would like to see tested. From my knowledge, a key-less entry/fob works very similar to a garage door opener. All wireless openers have their own different code, when the button is pressed that code is transmitted which the opener itself picks up, verifies the code, then open/closes the door. The fob on AutoVlog's vehicle should work the same way except that the code is constantly being transmitted over a very short range. The car's anti-theft system is build on being able to pick up the fob's signal in order to use the vehicle. This is perfect for most car thieves, but since that fob's signal is being constantly transmitted, it can be picked up by anyone. I suspect that if you can extract the fob's code, you can ignore most of the car's safety features and allow for the vehicle's theft much more easily. I hope I have given you an idea for a future video AutoVlog, I like your videos. :)

@corradotox8 жыл бұрын
Luke Wilmoth I think you're hitting the nail on the head. Nobody would willfully throw a key fob out of the window while driving. The feature is designed to check if the key is still in the car when you're driving away from a standstill and, as the video proved, it works fine for that. Why is it designed like this? Because the person who has the key can only leave the car when it's not running... it happened to me a couple of times: when I'm driving my wife's car, sometimes she is sitting in the passenger seat with the keys in her purse. She left the car taking the keys with her and the car told me right away (as soon as she closed the door), so I could catch the mistake in time.
@bananafoneable8 жыл бұрын
Idk, if you get forced out of your car and the key fob is in your pocket. it still doesn't matter because they can still drive off. when they try to start the car again they wont be able to.

What's annoying is that they're not giving you an alternative to these Smart keys with the modern cars. It's good that you are taking the time to show us these scenarios because the manufacturers certainly aren't making it clear what happens.
@441meatloaf8 жыл бұрын
Why would they? If you break or lost the key they can just charge you an expensive and annoying process to give you a new key. Literally the dealership will need to send your VIN id and computer onboard the details to the manufacturer and they will have to reprogram a new fob.
@johna89998 жыл бұрын
@Aoru I was thinking more about safety than cost. These cars cut out to save fuel what happens if you're on a hill and you've lost your key? To me that's a dangerous situation especially if there are car behind you... at this point I'm not worried about the cost of a new fob.
@DareToBeDeviant8 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered how much fuel is 'saved' by cutting off the system while at a red light, like 3 cents' worth in a 10 mile journey?
@danwat12348 жыл бұрын
The time it takes for a car engine equipped with auto start-stop to turn on again is way less than 1 second. It would probably have a hill hold feature for that split second time. In a hybrid though, you have the immediate power from the electric motor(s).

Very informative. Very useful. I really hate these proximity keys. If you lose a key it will cost you $500 for a new one. And you will probably have to wait a few days to get a new one. Meanwhile your car is stranded on the side of a road somewhere unless you pay to have it towed. In the old days you could just pull out a spare key from your wallet. Those keys only cost about $2.00 and you could have them made at any hardware store. Great video. Thanks for doing it.

First sorry for all those reactions below making a joke of your subject. I have a Jeep Renegade with key less entry, if key not in the car it warns. If engine running, it warns, but you can drive the car as far as you want. I would prefer if key not in the car it stops. Sometimes battery of the key is depleted, and you need to open the car door with hidden key in the fob. Starting engine is pushing the fob to the start button. I have no idea how it knows the key is in the car with no signal from the key. BUT generally I love this keyless entry. I saw the latest version on a Jeep Avenger, you walk to the car and mirrors flip open and you can enter the car, start it, of course with seat belt on, and when you stop step out, mirrors automatic flip in and doors lock. I love it, although I know car thieves can intercept the key (fob) signal and easily steel your car. BUT with all the spy technology the thieves are easily tracked. Yes the car spies on you all the time.

Ewie M and that's why I have a garage. It doesn't really solve the problem though since none of the vehicles in it have push button start.
@ajmorgan5918 жыл бұрын
Ewie M, this is not the case (at least not with the Fusion; I can't speak for other vehicles). As soon as either the driver's door or the front-seat passenger's door is opened after shutting down the engine, the car completely powers down (the equivalent of removing the key from a traditional ignition). The only way to start it again in this case is with the fob inside the vehicle. In other words, there is no grace period within which the car can be restarted without the fob if a door has been opened. The dude in this video didn't open his door after shutting down the engine, and hence had the option to restart the engine without the fob inside the car.
@T1Oracle8 жыл бұрын
Ewie M A screwdriver only takes 2 seconds.

A couple of times I've had my car say to me something along the lines of "cannot communicate with key fob" while driving, despite it being sat there in the cupholder. Waving it in front of the speedometer seems to be enough to shut it up. I'd like to think that if it failed to reach the fob, then it would eventually do a safe and graceful shutdown (e.g. virtually disconnecting the link between the gas pedal and the engine, so that you still keep steering servo assist as you slow down to zero and have to park it). Never felt the urge to test it though. But if someone jumps into my running car while the key is in my pocket, I want them to not get very far.

WE HAVE A BIG QUESTION! Many of these new cars have sensors that protect against front-end collisions if you get to close to something. For example (You just get done strapping your child into the car seat, as you turn around you notice a black van pull behind your car. you see a man walking towards you. You panic and get into your car and slam the door shut and lock the doors! You start the car but the van is behind you and the only thing in front of you is a wooden fence. You throw that bitch into drive and floor it into the fence to get away) Would the car stop or keep going? -Subaru Eye Sight for example-

jim jones minecraftadventur102 Let's get back to the question. There's an open field behind the fence. You can't push the truck because not only does the 4 cylinder not have enough power but would the car even let you get close enough to push?

You can always turn the system off. Also it will only detect the thing in front of you so after you pass it it won't react to it anymore. If it is Honda sensing and it is a person in front of you though it won't do anything because Honda Sensing is one of the only in not the only crash avoidance system that doesn't understand pedestrians in America.

Yes, exactly. What happens if you have the RFID key, but the car refuses to recognize it, or interference prevents the RFID key code from being read? How do you override the security system with manual access? There's millions of these wireless, expensive RFID keys out there, and most of them are vulnerable to conditions that can cause temporary or permanent failure, in addition to stranding the occupants because the car won't start.

SkyEarthOcean most older American cars (cadillac) used to have a number key pad on the drivers side door you put a code in to unlock as back then door lock/trunk and gas cap keys were separate to the ignition key

SkyEarthOcean it is easily done on the aftermarket scene, most insurance companys would run a mile as it would be considered HIGH risk, and its not the auto makers who are completely to blaim (i will admit they could do things better) governments around the world asia, north america, europe, set many different rules and regulations which can change on a virually daily basis and the auto makers have to devise a system that meets the requirements set by the government,

well with push button start you don't have to grab your keys from your pocket, just leave them in there and press the start button so that's one plus. another thing is some people with heavy keychains tear up their ignition with the key in and that weight bouncing around. so thats another thing that can't happen with push button start
@mightythistle8 жыл бұрын
HeeroYuy911 also real keys cause mechanical degradation over time, electronic push buttons are less prone to wear and tear
@RedFlaggWaving8 жыл бұрын
Michael B I disagree with you on that one. If you're like most people, you'll get rid of your car way before you even have to worry about wear and tear on the key ignition. I would think a push-button start would suffer more wear because of the fact that we push it with our dirty grimy fingers. I've seen some cars (not push-button start cars) with the surface of some of the buttons rubbed off and unreadable, for example the cruise control.
@armchairgeneralissimo8 жыл бұрын
My car is 14 years old with 246k miles and the original key and ignition work perfectly fine so I wouldn't worry too much about wear and tear. When I used to work in a garage years ago nine times out of ten when a vehicle had an ignition key problem it was becuase the car key was on a ring with a ton of other keys and fobs hanging off it. All that weight dangling and bouncing around will soon mess up the barrel.

I used to think that but I couldn't go back to keys now unless I were to lose my job and need to go buy some cheap piece of shit car. Keyless cars are reliable, easy, the risk of someone throwing your key out the window is super low, there are safeties in place to prevent lock outs.... the list goes on! The only thing SOMEWHAT possible is someone could theoretically steal your car if you leave it running. However, because it's keyless, you can leave it running and lock the door. Something that's much harder to do with a key ignition.... yes, you can do it with a spare key, but I can do it with the push of a button on my car door. Who's faster? ;)
@pineappleroad3 жыл бұрын
@@since1876 it would theoretically be possible to do something like that with the car my parents had before the current one (the car had a remote and 2 keys, the remote could only unlock and lock the doors, and theoretically the car could be left running and then locked with the remote) my parent's current car has the remote integrated into the keys (it uses a physical key, although to reveal the key part of the key a silver button has to be pressed)
@mi6xgzjon1868 жыл бұрын
greatly informative thanks .... i know a bit about radio and thats what these keys rely on so iv always wondered how secure they are and now i know, thier not!!! also how easy is it to buy hardware to copy fobs? i know the central locking ones are simple enough to copy you can copy the frequency and access code accurately from up to 50 feet away and if your close enough too someone with a contactless bank card theres equipment that reads them too. Big question is will insurance companys keep paying out if theres no sign of forced entry into these cars when they are stolen??? make sure if youv got one of these that when you park up at home make sure the keyless phob is as far away from the car as is safe to be .

They should put a metal tab on the fob that you insert into a slot near the steering wheel. To prevent you driving off without the fob, the ignition should only be enabled when the tab is in the slot and your foot is on the brake. After starting, the tab locks in place so you can't take it out unless the ignition is turned off and the car is in park. Innovation!

does that mean you can steel a car while for example fueling up, cause many don't lock their car while fueling up and you can get in and drive off?

Looks like it, but there's physically no way to restart the engine once the stealer shuts down the engine. I believe it is much much harder to hot wire a car that has one of those smart keys. There's a reason manufacturers are completely dropping the traditional key.

This is specific to fusion or ford family cars. Different makes and models behave differently. For example, my 2009 Mazda will keep beeping while the fob is out or dead. But at least in 7 series BMW 2011, you can't even shift gears if the key fob is not detected. Applicable for most electronic gears. Some cars fobs become useless once the car is running, you wont be able to lock the car while it is running. Other cars are ok with that.

I found this topic covered in my Mazda's manual (2014). Therefore, to prevent theft, simply always turn the car off (push the button). As long as the car is running, anyone can hop in and drive off. They'll eventually run out of gas or need to refuel and will have to turn off the vehicle, but they'll likely be quite far away by the time that happens. I'll never understand people who leave their cars running in parking lots, and especially unlocked.
