@truthnowtv187 Quitting is so very hard when you are deep into the drinking life. Two factors got me to (now) day 484: (1) A history over several years of “mini-quitting” episodes - somehow the failures weren’t wasted; (2) A major, unexpected life event, the birth of my granddaughter. I became something of an auxiliary parent to my daughter’s little girl. That’s a sober-only privilege/job. Here’s a tactical tip. When you are tempted to go to a bar for food and alcohol, see if you can make yourself (at least sometimes) eat at a cafe or restaurant that does not serve alcohol. I found that on any given evening, after I became sated with a nice meal, I no longer wanted alcohol. Good luck!

This is a very inspiring video. I stopped drinking 208 days ago after a 40 year habit which began after some shitty childhood experiences. My emotional life has been SO hard since I quit, as the layers stripped off and revealed the memories again. No one tells you this will happen, it’s all about great sleep, etc etc etc. So the unresolved trauma numbed by weed and alcohol now needs dealing with properly. I will never drink again.

These are great points. I stopped about 900 days ago and, to tell the truth, the "hard" part of quitting was over rapidly. The key is to understand what form of "therapy" the alcohol was giving you and learn to replace it with a healthier alternative. Bad habits can replaced with equally "addictive" healthy habits.

I agree. I believe that most people have addictive personalities. You're correct in observing that healthy addictive behavior can be substituted for unhealthy addictive behavior. Thanks for making this important observation!

I quit drinking tomorrow, on April 1, 2023. I've quit before for a period of one year, just to try it out, but now that I'm 42 I just can't take hangovers anymore, and the recent research just makes it less compelling to drink even a bit. I am hung over as I type this, and it's horrible. I hate hangovers and they just get worse and worse. I will take a photo as you suggest, and I'm also going to schedule a DEXA scan so I can map out my body fat % in highest accuracy. Then I will walk every morning for 10K steps, start my daily yoga routine, and stick to a super clean diet. I think I'll even start reading books again. I can only imagine how my life could change after I quit for good.

January 21, 2003, I said to myself, "That was the last hangover I'll ever have." And it was, 20 years ago, at age 49. The biggest change I anticipated? I respect and trust myself. I feel good in my own skin. I left an abusive marriage three years later, and met the most wonderful, loving man I've ever known. He quit drinking a few years after we met, and then we married. Sadly, Alzheimer's came on and he passed almost two years ago. I'd never have felt worthy of his love and cherishing, if I hadn't stopped drinking. At 69, I'm going for love one more time. Alcohol makes you pretty useless after about 5 hours you drained and sluggish. I found that after a meal with alcohol I was ready to sleep totally ruined the day with no energy. Not to mention the anxiety hitting you the next day which want to make you drink again. The worst is the drama which follows the next day. You might gone to a party and made a fool of yourself and you can’t remember really what exactly you did and if you insulted someone. The next day you start to try and figure out and peace together last nights events adding even more to the hangover and anxiety. Alcohol can be an absolute nightmare. It starts with one drink and you think it’s just the one. By the time you finish it you think oh it’s okay I have another one and you back in the train wreck.

At 70 years old, I'm 35 years sober. My heart goes out to all those new to this who have commented here. The selfie tip is good. they didn't exist 35 years ago but in every photo of me from back then I have a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Yes the most significant effects when giving up drinking are emotional and mental, but both are products of our physical brain. It DOES get better although at first it seems to get worse. It's more just a consequence of removal of the aesthetic though. From my early teenage and emotionally developmental years I used alcohol, and then other drugs, to cope. It was the ONLY coping mechanism I had. I had to learn to deal with life on life's terms. Not my own. In my humble opinion it is not so much a matter of "giving up drinking". That's akin to "giving up hitting your thumb with a hammer". It's all about "learning to live sober". It IS WORTH IT!

I stopped drinking for almost 5 months and this channel was a huge help. When I relapsed I had a really shitty job and my mind was always of friday and that sixpack. It was a relief and getting drunk on my computer was actually helping in someway. On most Saturdays I also drank from 4 to 8 beers. Now I have a great new job and I honestly don't think about drinking that much. For me it's now just a habit. "Well it's weekend so I SHOULD get beer like usually do", but I have noticed that I don't get the same good feeling as I used to. Like after 2-3 beers I don't feel like drinking anymore where as previously I was pretty bummed when I was getting to the end of my sixpack. I'm thinking of trying sober life again and leaving alcohol for good. Please ask me updates on my situation I think it motivates me even more if someone asks 3 months or 1 year from now and I can say "Ye still sober" and give you my intake how it has affected my life.

I am so sick right now my ulcers are hectic. I also have bad gastritis. The pain is unbearable I have decided not to drink from tonight as I can feel if I don't I am gonna suffer the consequences. 40 years of drinking red wine at night. I really hope I can do this, my stress and anxiety is very high at the moment.

I am 62 years old, I’ve lived in Mexico, most of my life, drank like a fish, I am one of the few people that quit for my health or so he says, it’s been seven months, not a drop, it wasn’t hard to quit, but it sure is boring 🙈. Seems like I don’t have friends anymore. I hope he gets better. 🙏

Thank you.. I need to find my way out of this habit. Triggered tonight after a conversation with my Dad aging and becoming more depressed. Sadly the first thing I did after attending to him was to get a bottle of wine. Already tired but drank a the bottle even though my intention was to have one or two. Your video gives me hope. My intention is to change and soon.

Life can be really hard. Honestly I was a big drinker for 19 years, I stopped 8 days ago, two things helped, this book I just read Alan carr’s quit drinking. He teaches you to do it by de programming you says willpower doesn’t work. Second ask Jesus into your heart, the Holy Spirit can take away your cravings.

Right after I stopped (22 years ago) I experienced drastic improvement to my sleeping. I would say within days I felt it. Scary dreams subsided and quietly faded away for good, as well. Other changes include healthy gut behaviour; return of relaxed, confident mind and mood. and physical stamina (I'm a runner). Great video.

My reasons were all health related. I had not many social issues from alcohol. Liver is a big one but heart problems are extremely common and often the cause of death. I had heart arrhythmia at dangerous levels but since I stopped drinking, it has disappeared. Lastly, brain and focus issues are critical if you work with your mind.

I gave up alcohol a while ago as I thought that it was bad for me (after 50 years of excess!). When lockdown came I started again but much less, a couple of bottles of wine a week. After being diagnose with AFib I cut out alcohol completely. I was tempted to have a glass of wine and then two on holiday. I woke in the night with a racing heart so that stopped that sneaky drinking. I still enjoy a small glass of wine on my birthday and at Christmas so I am not TT. But I do now count myself as a ex-habitual drinker. I’ve lost about 30lb and my BP has also reduced over the years since my heavy drinking days. I also feel much better.

@1:49 And, this is why the 12-step program exists. In a basic map: Steps 1-3: You admit you have a problem, and you cannot handle, therefore, you are turning to a "higher power." Steps 4-11: Invokes the person in recover to take inventory of their life (honestly), and to clean up their lives that led them to the bottle. Step 12: To carry what you have learned from others, and your own recovery to help others.

Great video and great support for people giving up alcohol. My journey started with an eye condition called wet macular retinal obstruction. This can be aggravated by high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Also high liver enzymes suggesting fatty liver were detected at my blood assay and physical test I undertook as a result of discovering the eye condition. Push came to shove and the doctor recommended cutting to less than 14 units a week. As I have a very compulsive and addictive personality, I know this from cigarettes 33 years ago, I decided to quit drink altogether. 19 days off and my mind is much clearer and focussed than it ever was as an adult, drinking since age 19, and now I notice the number of people around me who DONT drink or do so very moderately. Unlike most people I do not have an "OFF" switch when it comes to addictive things. Like my time giving up tobacco I am only in the early stages of giving up alcohol but many of the personal skills I learned giving up cigarettes I can now apply to alcohol. You do not TRY to gove up something, you just DO it. THe word " try "gives people an opt out if they regress to drinking again. The mind will try to subvert your will and resolve in many different ways because the body likes "business as usual". This is known as homeostasis and also applies to food habits and weight loss. Another thing to watch out for is social settings and friends who may try to encourage a former drinking buddy to go back to the old ways of drinking. Happily in my case all my close friends are non drinkers or very modest drinkers who do not try to encourage me to drink so at my age tha is not a problem. Social messaging and adverts are a problem in that I never realised how much money is spent on advertising drink and also gambling and junk food. Something needs to be done about this but governments will not do it because of all the lovely taxes they get with present arrangements. Solving this problem and going up against these corporate interests is well beyond my pay grade. At least now I am aware of the problem.

The opposite of addiction is sobriety. Addiction is an attempt to temporarily control the emotional pain and dysfunction you are experiencing . Sobriety will force you to learn how to deal properly with the emotional pain and dysfunction you are experiencing.
