The color change is to be expected when you switch brands as different brands can have different detergent additive packages. Switching brands once in a while is a good way to keep the engine clean.

Interesting video. I have always held the belief on oil changes. I like my old oil coming out very dark or black. Why? That tells me the oil is doing it job of cleaning the motor. I don’t drive new cars, most of my vehicles are older. So I expect the dark or black oil color at my oil changes. What is the brand of Shell that BMW requires? I have a friend that has a BMW X-5 and at his annual oil change the dealership was using 5W-30 Gold bottle Castrol.

I’m not sure what tier of shell BMW uses. when I asked them, they kind of beat around the bush and then didn’t really answer the question.
@damiansutube4 жыл бұрын
Castrol was the supplier and recommended brand for BMW for many years. It was the recommended brand in the owners manuals for BMW and Mini until the switch to Shell/Pennzoil some years back. Depending on the vehicle and engine the recommendation is typically 5w30 and more recently 5w40 BMW LL-01. As long as it meets those requirements the brand is splitting hairs. However in recently some oils that previously held the BMW LL-01 accreditation no longer do including Castro’s oils that once did for example. This makes finding those oil at your local auto parts shop much more difficult.
@PilotCyrus4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that those oils that meet the BMW specifications are any different for the engine performance. My german BMW dealer uses a different brand almost every year. The car made over 150,000km so far. No repairs yet. Just oil changes.

That’s because those oil filters are crap use OEM Mann oil filters only! That brown tint in your new oil is fine there will always be old oil no matter how long you let it drain, especially if you have a oil cooler. Plus that’s what additives are added into oil for “cleaning” if your that worried about it start using liqui moly 2 step oil additive process first step has a engine flush
@unprofessionalmechanic84663 жыл бұрын
I have similar issue with oil darkening on my Audi TT, but becsuse we bought it with 40k ml on it already, I do not know how maintenance was followed with previous owners. I am planning on using Lique Molly engine flush in old oil > change oil (something isnt expencive, like wallmart brand may be)+new filter with Engine flush again> and then put AMSOIL European formula 5w40 which I already ordered with their filter.
@davidcampbell18993 жыл бұрын
I was surprised to see the deformation of the filter after 750 miles. this tell me the filter construction is no good or there is some sort of a high pressure problem with the oil, like starting the car at -30F without a block heater, or something. I was also amazed how dirty the oil was, there is defiantly something going on inside that engage!

Do the same test on a new car and it will look the same. If it does not, the oil is not doing its job. If anyone here has enough money to buy a new car, be sure to run this test and take pics of the color change,

I think if you first flush the engine as Amsoil recommends, you will find it has the best properties of any oil. Numerous tests have confirmed there is no comparison.

That oil filter is aftermarket garbage! How can anyone test the engine oil, which one is better or not. My Acura tsx has 220000 miles and I use whatever synthetic oil I have, 5w-30 or 0w-30. My bmw 135i has 140000 miles Ive used bmw engine oil, castrol, mobil1 so far. I track the bmw too. I change the oil every 5k miles on all of them. On my n55 335i I have 140k miles too with zero issues.

@@TenzaMotorsports You realize the crank and oil pump is full of dirty oil. You can't completely drain all the engine oil, when you change your oil. That's why that excellent Mobile 1 oil is somewhat lightly colored. Aside from going through 20 or 30 heat and cool down cycles.

I’m aware. But it doesn’t have that much in there. Not enough to make 6.5 quarts turn dark like that.
