(PLZ watch before commenting guys - I'm not gonna be eating less or avoiding all sugar just like, candy and stuff...I wanna eat it LESS often not NEVER, for dental issues) Thumbs up for old school food diary vlogs like this! Melanie, my dentist advises maximum 3 servings of any food with sugar, naturally occuring sugars included (AND fruit included) per day. Any kind of sugar is damaging, so be careful. I've had a lot of dental work myself recently, so I understand your pain. Stick to savoury snacks and no sugar in coffee and tea. it's worth it in the long run

There was this documentary on Netflix and it was about how much sugar is in anything and they even put it in baby formula. There was a little child (I think he was 7) in the US who died because he had too much sugar in his body! He went into a diabetic coma and never woke up. Its very sad. But thank you for addressing it, I will try it along with you!

For over 7 months now I've been following two basic principles about Sugar - No sugar mid-week (I also limit fruit and other natural sugars as well as white flour) and no guilt tripping myself if I mess up (due to not having the right foods around the house - I don't do the grocery shopping - or just feeling the need to have something less healthy). Going back to this really basic mentality has been pretty good for me because it creates a routine around it that's not impossible or overly strict for me. I have a higher risk of diabetes in my family and honestly, sugar is extremely addictive and unhealthy and I don't want to consume too much of it out of respect for my health (despite still struggling with it). Once in a while I either let loose a bit or tighten up my diet as I see fit, but everyone who's seen me eat routinely has commented that it's clear I have healthy habits. It's honestly changing my perspective that's helped me so far. I did have complete refined sugar rehab for about two and a half months before slowly allowing a bit back into my diet. My next step will be to completely kick diet coke out of my life though, that's been a struggle. Good luck on your journey Melanie!

Last year I went down on a spiral of over-obsessing with sugar and carbs. I got obsessed with eating 100% ''clean'' and lost a lot of weight, and as a result I now have severe anemia. Since September I couldn't hold onto that lifestyle anymore and gained 7kgs, and as of now I see myself overly eating junk food and sugar a LOT, hating my body and myself day by day. I'm trying to get myself out of this vicious circle, which is what you have experienced in the past as well (orthorexia/junk-food circle), so I love this type of videos because you always point out how the key is balance and leaning towards the healthy side of eating. I hope you bring up new cool healthy sugar-free recipes to share with us so that we can all remember that sugar is shite and we don't need it! Don't worry about your teeth, 6 months will fly :) all the care you're taking of yourself now will show up in the future! A big hug from Spain x

I use stevia only in stuff that already have a strong taste (baking, coffee, ...) but never in tea because stevia has an aftertaste that ruins tea for me! But I've worker my way from drinking tea and coffee with milk and a ton of sugar to just drinking them without anything added and I'm actually enjoying it! I'm really scared of getting diabetes because at my last check up my doctor told me I was at risk of becoming pre-diabetic so I've really been watching my (refined) sugar intake. A video that really helped me was the one made by "mind over munch" where they talk and compare all types of sugars (stevia included) and talked about negatives and positives and it's so interesting and just 100% based on facts. I'd recommend it :)

I had to go off all kinds of sugar (fruit, sucrose, dextrose, refined sugar) for three/four months and it was incredible to realise just how much sugar sneaks into everything. What I found was the hardest is I had to literally make everything from scratch. Every meal took half an hour to make because I could no longer use ready made pasta sauces or bread for a quick sandwich (cause bread also has sugar). You say that it doesn't affect energy but I instantly felt energy less after cutting out all sugar. I took iron tablets to help with that. I wish anyone luck who is going sugarless (including you Melanie!) I promise you that you will feel so much better for doing so :D Love you Melanie!

Oh ..Hope you are feeling better and not that upset anymore, Melanie! I can feel your pain... I used to suffer from bad tooth decay due to an antibiotic overdose that damaged the enamel of my teeth. Even pieces of my teeth were breaking off as they were eroding.. Eventually I lost 4 molars and half of a front tooth. I was only 13-14 when this happened, and I thought my life was ruined.. I'm 32 now, didn't lose any more teeth and my tooth decay stopped - thank to the dentist I went to, after the previous one I had perforated my sinus during a molar extraction. The dentist who helped me said that tooth decay is related to the process of mineral loss and replacement in teeth. The loss and the decay occur because of acids - that are produced by bacteria feeding on sugars-, are slowly dissolving our teeth...The more sugar > the more bacteria > more acid > more decay. That's what I was told, if I remember well. The dentist said refined sugars are the worst, but bacteria can feed on glucose as well. In my extreme case, and while receiving a fluoride treatment, I had to stay away from sugary fruits too for a good while to stop the decay. Eating loads of dried fruits or even drinking wine regularly are just as bad for your teeth as eating refined sugar. (Why are they so bad when they are so good?!?!) The fluoride treatment/therapy really helped me. The dentist said that people prone to tooth decay should receive this treatment once a year to help re-mineralise their teeth. And of course it should always be done by a professional as although fluoride naturally occurs in the body, it can be toxic when overdosed. (The fluoridation of Irish water is wrong!) There are topical fluoride gels too that you can use, but usually they are given to people like me whose enamel is damaged. People with healthier teeth shouldn’t use it regularly. Maybe you can ask your dentist about this treatment or these topical gels & their use. They’ve made a big difference for me, and I didn’t have to get rid of fruits and sweets, though I consume them moderately. So to me what worked were less sugar - healthy diet (essential), fluoride treatment/gel, and of course brushing teeth & flossing. If I didn't have damaged enamels, probably less sugar and a healthy diet that is rich in minerals would do it. This is just my experience, and what worked for me. Other things work for other people, and I totally get those who ban fluoride toothpaste from their lives, it doesn’t work for me as I get sensitive & sore teeth when I ditch it. So this is only my experience, thought I’d share..it might help a bit. Get well, hugs from Galway xx

Before Christmas I was off dairy because I suspect that it doesn't agree with my stomach. I think since a lot of junk food that is around me contains dairy I was easting a bit less sugar as a side benefit. However since Christmas I've lost my self control and I've been having way to much chocolate, cake and ice cream. My body feels awful and my anxiety is much worse. I also have quite severe Chronic Fatigue and thats gotten worse as well. I think this video is the motivation I need to try cutting out dairy again and to cut back on unhealthy foods! I'm really bad at brushing my teeth, often because I don't have the energy to leave bed thanks to the CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) but I need to make an extra effort to remember to brush when I am up. Thank you for the motivation your Food Diary Friday vlogs bring me Melanie xo Ella

I was heading down the same road but one trip to the dentist woke me up and I got a tonnnnn of fillings filled before they got too bad. Now it's all about good dental hygiene. Sugar doesn't make your teeth get cavities, it's the bacteria that's attracted to the sugar. Also, honey and "natural" sweeteners are just as bad as any sugar, it attracts the same bacteria. There's no other option to preventing stuff like that than being on top of your teeth. Also any sort of whitening paste, solution, etc strips away your enamel and makes your teeth a whole lot worse. Counterintuitive, I know, but I know people who lost teeth because they use the whitening stuff too much. It's all about floss and brushing regularly and regular check ups with the dentist!

I'm with you, Mel. Cutting out or cutting back on refined sugar is SO difficult. Recently my dad has been buying Starcrunch which is my weakness, second only to ice cream, and I'm dying! I've decided to put a real effort into cutting refined sugars during the week. I'm going to give myself until the first of February to create a game plan so I don't set myself up for failure but oooh it's going to be hard. But I know the reward will be big. I'm finally working on getting into shape and toning those areas I've always been sensitive about and I know booting these unnecessary sugars will really help with that. Just have to keep these things in mind.

I'm recovering from an eating disorder and started to cut out unnatural sugars once I felt I was ready to, and once you go without refined sugar for a while you really lose the taste for it. Its not what our bodies really want. Now whenever I have refined sugar it makes my body feel disgusting and sluggish and even messes with my digestion, not to mention I just don't enjoy the taste of it anymore (when I used to be an absolute chocoholic!). My diet has been vegan and very high in natural sugar for about a year now. I eat a lot of fruit, smoothies, natural yogurt, nakd bars etc and my teeth are perfect, not to mention I'm still quite slim despite how much sugar I have. Fructose and natural sugars don't reaction with our body the same as refined sugar does.

Good for you for making positive changes to your diet! Just a tip if you're going to try baking with stevia-- stevia is often mixed with erythritol (a sugar alcohol) in the blends they sell in the store. If you consume a lot of sugar alcohols (i.e. If you put a cup of it into a brownie batter as opposed to just a spoonful in tea) it can cause "gastrointestinal distress." Sorry if that's tmi but it's good to know!

I would recommend 85% cocao chocolate bars. They're a bit of an acquired taste (really strong bitter chocolatey taste), but once you get used to it, you might prefer it to regularly sweetened chocolate! I had one of those dentures for a YEAR when I was 14 years old, and it was one of my top front teeth (super noticeable obviously lol) that I lost after a bike accident. Mine was so fake looking and kids can be cruel... but now I have a beautiful implant and most people can't even tell it's fake! Tell them to use a light pink implant (the "screw" itself) instead of metal colored, because then it won't cast a dark shadow in your gums that is visible on the outside. The pink/"gum-colored" implants are new so make sure they have them!

Thank you for this! I'm the same as you and have the most massive sweet tooth. I'm 22 and have had 17 cavities and a root canal because of my sugar addiction. I've been wanting to eat less sugar to lose weight and get more healthy, but now you've given me another motivation to try and cut down.

sugar is shocking! I'm working on eating more wholesome foods. I read about a study on rats who were given heroin. after a period of time with adding an additional bowl of sugar they started choosing sugar over heroin. And it's hidden in so much of our foods in different forms! I by no means have a sugar free diet but I feel it's nice to be conscious and aware of these things in order to change my outlook and perception of sugar laden products! ps. thank you Mel. I feel like I've gained something when I watch your videos whether it's a feeling, knowledge, giggle, friend. You're a gal that keeps on giving. You're time is appreciated! 💓

I have never had a tooth pulled, but last month I went to the dentist after not going for nearly two years, and they said I had periodontal disease! I was shocked because I am always so careful about flossing and brushing, but I'm sure eating so many sweets is part of the problem. I should follow your example! I don't know if this counts as "natural" or a sugar "alternative", but I love fresh sugarcane juice. I don't know if you have ever had it, If you go to a place where sugarcane is grown (I live in Japan and they grow it in Okinawa) you can probably find a shop where they grind raw stalks of sugar cane by hand into juice. It is no sweeter than freshly squeezed fruit juice and has a really unique flavor. In Okinawa they also make a minimally processed "black sugar" that is just sugar cane juice boiled until all the liquid evaporates. It is still sugar, but supposedly it has some nutrients. It is much darker in color and more natural than brown sugar we usually buy. I like to put a little bit in my oatmeal in the morning. I also love dried figs and strawberries!

I love your glasses! I'm trying to give up refined sugar, I've done it before for a few months but I'm finding it so much harder this time around! I think its because I just pick up sweets at uni or put a million sugars in my coffee and it is not good!

Yaaaaas love me some Food Diary Friday! I've had to watch other KZbinrs similar videos because I've binge watched yours too many times ahaha This isn't really about this video, but two techniques that I'm using to try and combat binge eating disorder is 1) Stop labelling food as good or bad, or having a 'naughty' treat, because when I do label food as bad or naughty or a guilty pleasure, I actually start feeling guilty about eating it, and it shouldn't be like that! I feel that all food is good food and the formation of unhealthy relationships to food is really something that should be spoken about more 2) Make one healthy choice every day, whether that be emotionally/mentally healthy or physically healthy. I track these in my diary, and even if my healthy choice is sitting outside with a cup of tea on a really bad mental healthy day instead of lying on the couch drinking tea, it's still something that I feel proud of when I look back.

Oh I totally agree! About the labelling of foods! For me with the sugar thing it's not that I view refined sugar as inherently bad but too much of it caused my tooth decay which is just a fact I can't argue with, and I'm totally fine now with food/calories/portions/my body so focusing on natural sugars for me is going to be an easy transition (I was already half way there!) xxx

poor babe, I feel ya I don't do sugar either and my 10 year old struggles with teeth too :( dates help me a lot. try making date paste with them to add into foods. it's fruit based but gives a sweetness to it. date balls with dates, oats or nuts, unsweetened coco and coconut processed together and rolled into little balls for sweet treat. so yummy :)

I love this sooo much! like you I have struggled with edos, restrictive eating, binge eating and ortho so I find your videos so relaxing and comforting! I have found this video so nice because I have tried to limit my sugar (refined sugar) intake because it makes me break out and get headaches. I have found that using stevia whenever I would use sugar is amazing! I have used it for about 4 years now. also keeping no sugar added dark chocolate and eating it with fruit or dates. MEDJOOL DATES ATE SO HOOD AND TASTE LIKE CARAMEL AND ARE 100% NATURAL SUGAR!! they taste amazzingg with apples and taste amazing with caramel apples

I feel your pain about your teeth! My teeth look gorgeous to the naked eye, but due to genetics and a 5ish year span where I did not take good care of my teeth at all, I now have a disaster in my mouth! My parents paid $650 for me to have a "consultation" at my dentist. This is where he and the hygienist checked each tooth in detail: front, back, sides, insides, and gum line. Gums got a rating, and each tooth a summary of whether it was ok, had a cavity, needed a root canal, or to be pulled. I literally had something wrong with EVERY tooth! I had 1 pulled 5 years ago, 2 pulled two winters ago due to excruciating pain, and have had 5 more broken so badly that one you can't even see, just the root is in the gum line. I am in constant pain, and to make matters worse, my dentist said to do all the necessary dental work would cost $10,000 on my top teeth, and $11,000 for my bottom. AND it will obviously get worse the longer I wait, AND that $21,000 does NOT include the permanent implants I will need after having all the bad teeth removed. I remember feeling so defeated after that appointment, and I still do. I have no dental insurance, and to just pull the 2 teeth last winter cost $2,200. Booooooo! I wouldn't wish bad teeth on my worst enemy! 😬😷💉

I've been trying to limit my sugar intake too! Had no chocolate, biscuits or doughnuts etc. so far this year and I'm so proud of that! I was a sugar junkie before but I just don't really crave those things much now... I've just been having apples and popcorn when I want a snack and have been satisfied... My family but sugary things all the time so always have it in the house but my will power is getting much better!

I totally understand the sugar struggle! I'm still addicted, but had to cut back a lot. Got 16 cavities when I was 16 because I got the stomach flu, drank too much juice and ate too much candy, and never flossed. Be careful friends!

Easy change is to always drink smoothies, fruit juices, and soft drinks through a straw (you can get reusable ones) as that reduces the time the drink is swishing about your mouth, and so helps stop the natural and refined sugars in the drinks from coating your teeth which is what leads to plaque build up :)
