This is how I’m approaching oil these days. I’m 62 and vegan for 7 years. I have perfect bloodwork and take no medications. I started my high raw, high fruit journey 5 months ago. I’ve had several vegetarian years along the way. Now, I basically eat high fruit during weekdays. Any fruit I want--fresh, canned, dried, frozen, juiced. I also include superfoods and plant-based yogurt. On the weekends, I allow myself a treat of plant-based cooked foods such as vegan spaghetti, vegan “steak” salad, veggie burger and fries, or veggie cheesesteak, crockpot vegan soups, etc. If the recipe calls for oil, I’ll use it (only olive oil) albeit sparingly. I tried to do “no oil” but I think that trying to not use oil at all or make substitutes in recipes just makes me waste food because the food doesn’t taste right a lot of the times. I even tried the cashew route of making a bunch of dressings with cashews so that you get the whole food without separating out the oil. Cashew ranch, etc., etc. I forced myself to eat those dressings because of the expense of the cashews. I tried mock tuna with sunflower seeds to avoid oil. I forced myself to eat that also. Much better-jackfruit “tuna” with homemade vegan mayo made with olive oil, tofu, and white vinegar. Now, if I want cashews, pecans, walnuts, etc. I just eat them whole. If I want a mock version of something, I follow the recipe if it requires oil but only have that dish occasionally. No more blending. No more substituting. I think it is ok to use oil for a weekend meal once or twice a month as long as people are not gorging on other foods the rest of the time and gaining weight. Perhaps just eat half of the dish if it calls for oil and eat the other half on another day. If feeding a household, maybe split the recipe and make a kid-friendly version according to the instructions, then make an altered version for the adults who wish to eat a sugar/oil/salt (SOS) free diet. I agree, though, that sautéing in oil is not necessary. I make my comment because I think that kids need to be able to associate “plant-based” with delicious food. If they don’t like it or see it as hit-or-miss, they will eat at fast food restaurants outside the home, eat at friends’ homes that are not plant-based, and completely avoid this diet once they go off to college, etc. Once when I was visiting a friend out of state about 15 years ago, I stopped to get a roast beef sandwich. When my friend asked me what I had eaten while out shopping, I said, a roast beef sandwich (I wasn’t vegan at the time). Her grandson exclaimed, “Aren’t you lucky.” My friend was making all kinds of weird tasting veggie dishes. That’s why the kid said that and that’s why I got a roast beef sandwich while I was out. Now I would not do that. And, unfortunately, my friend’s grandson is in his 20s and is not plant-based. Her husband actually co-wrote a few chapters in Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book, “Fast Food Genocide.” Around that time, she started “experimenting” with a bunch of her own recipe ideas and now includes fish in her diet; she’s no longer vegan. It is easier to push through recipes that don’t turn out quite right as an older person because I know the consequences of eating the Standard American Diet. I was a caregiver for 17 years to my elderly parents and grandmother who ate animal products at every meal. They didn’t know any better. They all suffered high blood pressure and heart disease (heart failure and strokes). None were overweight but all died from heart disease. Now I am a senior and I don’t want that for myself. So I’ve experimented until I’ve found a way to have tasty plant-based food every day that I enjoy and look forward to eating. But young people are not going to have this kind of motivation and determination. They want tasty food NOW. Avoiding heart disease and high blood pressure is not on their list of priorities. So, I am just saying that for the sake of the young people, we should remember that they are not yet where we are on our plant-based journey. Young people want tasty food. That’s why some young vegans lapse into eating a bunch of tasty vegan junk food just to stay vegan and not kill animals. But we can help young people early in life by trying to make the healthy plant-based choices delicious and encouraging them to learn how to prepare tasty plant-based foods for themselves and teaching them to know how to not overeat.

I appreciate your swap out for the manicotti noodles. My husband has a gluten allergy, so it's always a plus when I can find videos that include gluten-free options, along with vegan cooking. I love how you are so real and authentic with your no-fuss cooking. At least you make it seem so. It helps us not born "executive chefs" see that the reality of cooking vegan can expand to the average cook. I also love how you include your family and their opinions in the videos. I've been watching other videos, but I think I'm hooked on yours for a few reasons, some of which I already mentioned. Other reasons include I love how you swap out and give options and ideas for optional ingredients, and list the recipe ingredients you're using on the screen so I can write them down. Thank you for the time and fun you put into your videos to make this experience fun for everyone!

Thank you for this AWESOME message - it's greatly appreciated. My wife is gluten-free so pretty much everything we make is GF! So we got you covered! And if it isn't I almost always tell you how to make it work. Thank you for all the lovely comments - glad these videos are so helpful to you!!!
@barb939
@barb939 Жыл бұрын
You guys are amazing! That's wonderful information to hear about the gluten-free content. It's too bad your wife is gluten-sensitive like my husband is. It's a hard diet to find good recipes that don't taste awful, and I've yet to find any bread products, or recipes for him that he can enjoy. I currently pay almost $8 a loaf, and that's a little loaf with barely sandwich-size pieces. My granddaughter who just went off to college has celiac, diagnosed when she was 3. Having watched the sacrifices she's had to make, the torment of eating stuff, that none of us would eat, and watching us eat things that she wanted to eat too, but just couldn't eat, has been quite an awful journey for us all. We're so grateful though, that because more and more people are being diagnosed with gluten allergies these days, there are far more products on the store shelves, and options available at some restaurants, now than ever before. So I thank you for sharing your knowledge, and building a venue for others to explore the world of food through the eyes of one who knows what it means to have food allergies, and conquering them head-on. Veganism is new to me in the last few months. I entered the world due to desperation after spending numerous years in and out of long hospital stays, and a horrible, almost life-ending stay in the ICU. I knew if I didn't do something about my health, I wasn't long for this world and hated the immobility and the long-term effects it caused me. I had to take it into my own hands. I couldn't just keep relying on the countless specialists to figure it all out. And I wanted off all the medications I was on in a bad way too. Well, the amazing stories I could tell after just a few short months on a vegan diet, even my doctors are shaking their heads about. It was something brought to my attention after my son and his wife bought a coffee shop in Woodbury, CT for the sole reason that there weren't any vegan coffee shops around them. At first, I thought they were a bit extreme about their dedication to veganism, but when I started googling to learn more about this fascination of theirs and knew what my alternatives were, I figured I had nothing to lose, and by golly, it worked! Their daughter, my oldest granddaughter is quite an animal activist, and over the past 4 years, she became a vegan and transformed her parents, and brother to veganism as well. Her little sister still isn't on the bandwagon quite yet, and may never be, LOL but she at least helps out at the newly transformed shop, and eats vegan food when it's served. I'm excited to learn more from your channel, and hope that when they come to visit next time, they will not only find a new mom and grandmother, but some delicious vegan food on the table. Sorry this response is so long, but I thought you and your followers might appreciate some good news in the vegan and gluten-free world, in contrast to all the negative comments and misconceptions floating around in our society today. I know, because I was one of those people who thought being a vegan was nothing more than a prolonged fad, and activism to an extreme. To all my new vegan brothers and sisters who are reading this, I am so sorry I ever doubted you. God's Blessings to you, your family, and all your viewers out there! @@pbwithjeremy

Plant based with Jeremy, yeah? A thought on golden milk: Prior to the British bringing tea from China to India/Pakistan/Bangaladesh, spiced milk drinks were common. Plain tea wasn’t catching on with tea plantation workers, and the overseers were looking for a productivity bump like factories with tea breaks saw. So mixing tea into the spiced milk *did* catch on, and became masala chai (spice blend tea). Golden milk is a version of the drink that stretched back to Vedic times.

Hi, Jeremy! I eat wfpb and am trying to go sos free (oil and sugar is fine, salt I find a bit harder), so I am really grateful for your changes to the recipes. Your daughter seems more open to different foods now, and her reviews are so complete! Your son seems to be less open and trying to find the negatives. It's funny how things change 😂 I have 2 teenagers myself, so I love to see how you get them to try all those meals. Love to see the whole family together in this, really. You deserve all the growth to the channel. The content is different and very good! And of course I'd like to know what the secret sauce is. I'm looking forward to the next book review!

Thanks so much for all of this! It's funny, both kids go through phases and days where they feel more articulate than others. School's starting too, so they're sometimes more tired come dinner time. They're always been good about trying new things, and we've always been fine with them not liking the meals as well. We're lucky that they're not picky - and I know it's helping to inspire some other kids out there. So glad you're enjoying the channel!

I love your channel, your recipes, and your family's energy and humor! Also love this series of videos. Thanks for sharing! There are quite a few cookbooks I think would be cool to try, but one I especially love is Simply Delicious Vegan by Caitlin Shoemaker (of From My Bowl). The recipes in the cookbook are all WFPB, oil-free, and refined sugar-free. And she is even gluten-free, so no need to modify for your wife (Woolie? Woolly? Willie? Not sure how to spell the name she goes by. LOL).

Hi from Germany! Thank you for another wonderful video 🙂 I really appreciate you trying to make the recipes healthier. Being Greek I find being oil free somewhat difficult, but I use minimal amounts of olive oil in my recipes, usually adding it at the end. I would love to see the recipe for the apple crumble in a future video as well. Thanks!

Hi Jeremy. Another great video! You and your family are so real and entertaining. Yes please for the apple crumble recipe. I personally appreciate when you tweak the recipes. I avoid oil, too much sugar and coconut products for my heart health. I do include small amounts of nuts and seeds. This is not a book I would buy, but will be trying the General Tao’s Tofu. The Lemon Pie looked delicious too. I may try that with your modifications and if I can figure out a replacement for the coconut milk. I don’t know may be too many changes. Have a great weekend!

Buy, Borrow, or Bounce? That is a little kinder than "Bury". LOL. Yay! I am delighted to have a new PBwithJ video to watch, and Saturday is the perfect day for it to come out. You all have become my secret plant-based family. Do you mind? (Only one extended family member appreciates my food. 😕) Your videos are funny, friendly, and I always learn something. I really appreciate your more healthful versions of recipes. I do have this cookbook (one of those Amazon $1.99 Kindle book specials). The General Tso's Tofu looks really good. I really want to try the lemon meringue tart. I think I will add some extra grated lemon rind to zing it up. I also prefer the agar agar powder to the flakes. (I tried to grind agar flakes in my spice grinder, and it just didn't work.) I add a tiny bit (1/4 tsp) of agar powder to cornstarch pudding to give it extra firmness. Any more and it is gelatin-like. 😄Annie, please share your secret sauce recipe. I promise I won't tell.😄 Wooly's (sp?) apple crumble sounds just perfect. Fall is so close. Thanks J and family. 🙂Janet in St. Louis.

Love your no oil, low sugar, low sodium approach to these recipes!!. For the lava cake, since you used a blender, i am wondering if avocado would work as a fat replacement. I also mcGyver recipes to avoid oil and excess sugar. I’m thinking for the oil maybe combine some nut butter and applesauce or some nut butter and the aquafaba from the chickpea. For sweetener I might try 1/3 cup date sugar. And also bump up the vanilla. I definitely want to try this one. Thank you! For your next cookbook adventure, how about Plantbased cooking made easy by Jill Dalton. TPL has both electronic and print copies available to borrow right now. Dessert Recipes aren’t exactly low fat though. Annie might like her buckwheat bread.
