Just avoid summertime in Japan and you're good! NEVER go in august, thats when humidity and temperatures are insanely high. Autumn-Winter (October to February) is best if you prefer low humidity and don't mind the cooler weather. Bottom line, avoid summer at all costs, and even when going in lower humidity months, bring your best products just in case
@tkhkm5168
@tkhkm5168 10 ай бұрын
One piece of advice as a Japanese citizen for anyone who's considering visiting: Visiting Japan in the summer is for masochists. Because the humidity in the air causes less sweat to evaporate from your skin, it makes the apparent temperature much higher than the actual atmospheric temperature. Not to mention that having drops of un-vaporized sweat all over your body feels really uncomfortable. And the humidity would also give you frizzy hair and shit, but that'll probably be the least of your concerns while there. Having lived in southern California once, and having read through a few Wikipedia articles just now, I can confidently say that a 40°C day there feels more comfortable than a 35°C day in Tokyo.

regarding the groping problem and the separate train carts for women, i've heard that they have such a big problem with men taking pictures up womens skirts that cellphone companies made the shutter sound on phone cameras permanently on and you cannot turn the sound of the camera off no matter what you do in an attempt to discourage creepy men from being gross... none of that should be necessary but at least is something??? 🤷

Yeah honestly i have heard a lot about this, there's a big big problem with creepy old men in japan who... refuse to understand consent. (Yt comments aren't the best place to go into detail about this stuff) To the point where it often leads to incidents involving minors. Most of the time, actually. See: the sexualization of SCHOOL girls. It's really sad, i wish young girls (everywhere) had the chance to live carefree.

I swear the first question for any black person that travels is "how racist were they" which is so sad but totally reasonable lmao. I can't speak about Japan, but most of my interactions living in Korea were neutral/positive. You WILL sometimes get stared at, but they're doing that to anybody who looks obviously "foreign". Usually they're either kinda surprised or, just worried you're gonna ask them for directions and they don't know what to tell your ass (can relate). One time an old lady at a bus stop touched my braids but... she was also saying how pretty I was so I didn't have the strength to cuss a grandma out😮‍💨I've gotten stuff worse IN america anyway but anyway, if you're scared of a place, just do your research and go. most people are too concerned with themselves to even care that much about you for more than a minute. don't expect it to be a perfect wonderland, but don't expect it to be absolute hell, either. sometimes people are even nice!!

Honestly, I'm more scared of the American South as a black person than other countries. Like will there be racism in other countries? Sure, but I don't think I'm going to die. Like research is key for traveling in the American South because one wrong turn in the wrong neighborhood could be your last.
@kkuudandere

@@469ka37 hell, I'm more nervous in the American NORTH. At least in the South they have a vague "reason" for flying That One Flag. In Michigan people will fly and hang That Flag for absolutely NO reason, they just weird. They have no ties to "Southern pride" lmao There are many examples of horrendous treatment overseas, I won't pretend everywhere else is perfect (or even safe for us). but it makes even less sense at home!!

in my experience living in japan and korea, sometimes its not being black or not but general feeling towards foreigners is partly "afraid you might act wild and disrespect their culture and rules but not sure how to tell you so they might keep silent but it feels so bad" fear. e.g in japan subway trains ppl are almost SILENT phones are supposed to be on silent mode u are nt supposed to talk on the phone and talking amongst urselves should be kept at a VERY low volume like the person next to u cant even hear wht u are saying to a frd on the other side of u. but many tourists are loud on the train and if they paid attention they would actually notice they can hear only themselves but they usually don't pay attention and even to me a foreigner who is living there but got used to the quiet is really annoyed. sometimes i say something but mostly i just check how many stations until i get off.

japan still has a very big issue with disrespect towards women - the women only cars are just a bandaid from the government because they don’t want to address the larger issues an enforce repercussions that will effect men. japan ranks 125th out of 146 countries on the gender gap index in 2023 (USA is 43 - Iceland is number 1 meaning the most gender equal). It’s a really sad issue that we have here, but the more we talk about it the better it gets! I’m happy you enjoyed your time in Japan 😊

The interesting thing is that, back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, Black American culture became extremely popular in places like Tokyo. Genres like jazz, rap, and hip-hop took the music scene by storm. Youth started adopting fashion trends. And you started to see a lot of black characters popping up in anime and manga. Japan does have a tendency to adopt aspects of a culture without looking into context, so sometimes their character designs show that ignorance. Lenora from Pokemon is an example of the mammy caricature due to the character designer looking at reference pictures without doing history homework. And you have designs like Mr. Popo from dragon ball speaking for themselves. Overall tho, Japanese people actually love and respect black Americans. Probably because non-white americans are typically very aware of and respectful toward other cultures when immersing ourselves in them.

Fun fact: the renovations you're talking about are actually a pillar of the Shinto religion; any object - including a building - that exists longer than 99 years is considered to be alive, but not necessarily in a nice way (short version, some things are supposed to be alive and some things aren't). Hence, a lot of shrines are ritually disassembled and reassembled every twenty years to keep them spiritually clean.

The first summer I lived there it was 100° with a humidity percentage at 100%. It sucked!!!!!! But it was so awesome living there, the food, the arcades, the festivals and holidays, so amazing!!!!!!!!!

I used to regularly go to a Japanese restaurant and the guy that worked there was in the process of "nappifying" his hair for lack of a better term. It took months and it was a lot since Japanese hair tends to be bone straight. I am black and at the time I relaxed my hair so we used to joke with each other that we should trade hair. It was odd to me that someone would actively seek to obtain my hair texture, but it was also flattering. It didn't feel like appropriation, more like admiration. It also made me appreciate my natural hair texture more.

Oh yeah, the reason their old temples look brand new is because they rebuild them if they are ever damaged. In japan the concept of the building is the building, not the original marterials necessarily. Some of their really ancient towers and stuff have actually completely burned down multiple times. Rebuild it, same building.

The hair thing! I’ve seen in east Asia people will PERM their hair so intensely to get an Afro texture. It was way more popular a few years ago, but it’s still definitely a thing (especially with people who are interested in black American culture that they see online)

If you google "high neck____" (tank top, t-shirt, etc)You'll find plenty of tops that won't show cleavage. But I get it, people with smaller boobs can look "modest" while wearing the same things we do while being sexualized. Edit: do you mean cleavage or just a boobie outline :D? If so I recommend googling "loose high neck blouse____" (short sleeves or long sleeves, probably the first, otherwise you might as well wear hoodies😅)

It's so great to hear you had a good time! And as other people said, it's better that you didn't record too much, you got to enjoy your trip without feeling like you're on work and had to record stuff to show us. I cannot afford joining a trip with you (though I'd love to!) but if you happen to visit Greece I'd love to know so I can meet you! I can tell you it's cheap, has great food, lots of us speak English, but is also very hot and humid in quite a few places so you might have a similar experience here in that regard XD

Italy is actually really beautiful! We specifically did a food-centered tour since it was a Culinary Class and we had the same tour guide for a few days (with some exceptions to different specialists in certain areas), the only downside are the pickpocketers and the street vendors that try to sell you stuff; I'd absolutely reccomended it though

I’m from the Louisville area so the humidity is something I am painfully aware of and was familiar to me when I visited like 15 years ago lol. One time, I went to a Tokyopop event and the CEO was there and he said when he got off the tour bus to here, he said the heat reminded him of actual Tokyo. So like, that’s just normal for me (even if it is noticeably worse bc climate change. 8)) But yeah, I’m so happy you had a good time Mac! I would’ve signed up but tfw no money bc I was busy getting sterilized fbahausbsvjd
