As a child of immigrants, I really appreciate you bringing up how being your family's safety net plays into budgeting and risk tolerance. Definitely not a common topic found in videos covering finance and budgeting, even though I'd guess there are quite a number of people in that category.
@chloeshih

i'm glad you appreciate that part! it's definitely been a challenging navigating those dynamics. i think my parents def get real disappointed at my spending habits haha. they're always buying the most inexpensive things and using broken or old gadgets. immigrant life haha. understanding investing financially and in myself was a huge hurdle for me that i'm still overcoming!

loooove the video and note at the end about budgeting as an immigrant child! I've internalized a lot of guilt around spending now that I'm working full-time and I've had so many conversations with friends about this. so glad that you shared and are publicizing this topic!!

hiya laura!! yeah honestly i didn't know i had that immigrant child mentality when it comes to buying things. my parents scold me a lot for buying nice things even if i think it's cheaper in the long-run to buy quality pieces o_o but ya kno - gotta navigate those generational differences somehow. one thing i wish i did more early on in my life is to invest way more in myself instead of opting for the cheapest / free option in every situation. there's quite a learning curve for me, but working on it! glad you and your friends talk about this topic too ~

As a first gen college grad coming from a low income family/background, I really appreciated how real you were about your finances and lifestyle choices! There's so much nuance and intersectionality in this and many creators/influencers seem to overspend for the sake of content/lifestyle inflation imo. Either way, this was a great video ♥ love all your content & looking forward to more of these Chloe!!

i know! i was actually wondering if i should even make a video like this bc i don't really buy a lot of things and don't enjoy buying brand name things either. i see lots off people in tech with big salaries and lots of creators spending so much for the lifestyle vibes, but it gets a bit too excessive for my budget girl soul. :/ thanks for dropping this thoughtful note. helps me stay grounded when crafting these vlogs! will have a new vid out tomorrow!

I really liked this video! The editing, the content, everything! Also MAJOR thank you for including the answer/question about what budgeting looks like as a child of immigrants. Our experiences look very different from the content that's often marketed in finance books/media. So thank you

yasss!! so glad you liked it!! :D and omg i'm also so grateful to hear that the last immigrant child budgeting piece resonated with you. i was almost not going to do a video like this because it seemed that content was all about spending lavishly with big brands and expensive fancy dinners. i was just never about that life. glad i ended up pushing this out!

Thank you for this video, I feel like I'm going crazy being my family's safety net (financially & physically at times, can be very taxing on the body and choices I make). Wow!! I did not realize that you were also from an immigrant and low income background!! That's huge for relatability for me, so much to say so much I want to know. I get you on budgeting and being the safety net for the family. SO much pressure to build wealth while also trying to enjoy your life when you have some more money. Especially when it exceeds your actual expenses. Do you adjust your budget to allow for more experiences, upgrading slightly, and exploring or keep expenses down because losing your job changes things dramatically for you and your family?? It's hard. Excited for more lifestyle videos, would love to hear more about your personal upbringing and journey.

yeah! my parents moved over to the states when they were 26 and had me a year after. they had like absolutely no connections and finally started a small local business. it was a huge shock for me meeting people from other socioeconomic backgrounds in university and in tech and see generational wealth play such a huge role in how someone lives their life and spend their money. investing in higher quality things and just normal financial investments are topics that took me soooo much effort to learn and internalize. i'm slowly adjusting my budget to experience things that bring me joy and not necessarily things that society tells me are good. like i still don't really enjoy going to fancy michelin star restaurants that are $$$. I also am not interested in buying thousand dollar bags or clothes. i'm adjusting slowly but surely! i also am not trying to take huge risks just in case my family needs me during these next big steps they're taking. am doing my best balancing everything!!

@@chloeshih I hear you 100%!! Especially with the shocker of undergrad. It was during my first year internship search course that I was working so hard to secure something and when re announced what we were doing everyone talked about who their parents or someone knew that they would be working with. Truly a game changer. And now I see that is what has worked for me in the workspace and likely what will help with my pivot into product lol. BUT with that I try to keep paying it forward to those who come from similar backgrounds as us. Always trying to volunteer and get these nuggets of information and perspective to young people follow a similar path. Wish I knew these things sooner. lol

So sometimes it's the other way around. If your success comes with money, you can afford the lifestyle changes to give yourself the glow-up: makeup, hair styling/cuts, quality low-cal food, gyms/workout equipment, etc. You can do that before the money comes, but you may be servicing credit card debt for a while.
