I rewatched Shame a few weeks ago and it seems to be relatable in an odd way. Not everyone has a sex addiction, but most people deal with inner turmoil that may or may not interfere with their interpersonal relationships. Gorgeous film. It doesn't shy away from the subject matter.

Thanks very much for sharing what you watched in August with us, Emma. I've included a list of highlights (and lowlights) that I saw in August: BULLET TRAIN (2022) - score 6/10 (it was overall a fun ride) THE ANDY BAKER TAPE (2021) - score 4/10 (it felt too much like the Creep films) BLOOD FEST (2018) - score 8/10 (big surprise to see this film from a friend's recommendation and I loved it. Should make a great double feature watch with "Hell Fest" (2018).) BEAST (2022) - score 6/10 (Idris Elba vs. a killer lion, that's the premise and it delivers) THE BLACK PHONE (2022) - score 9/10 (Scott Derrickson strikes again with clearly the best horror film I've seen so far this year. The 1978 setting was also very nostalgic for me as I was about the same age as the kids.)

I agree with you. Netflix and services like that are ruining documentaries. Good docos aren’t about themselves, they’re about the subject. Period. And they generally run for 30, 60, 90, or at most 120 minutes. I’m highly suspicious of “documentary series” as entertainment.

Not Okay was brilliant. it was good that I had a bit of prep with The Rehearsal first in that i was already in the mood for more in a similar vein with seeing how a manufactured scenario could give rise to real feelings and also the inherent damage that could bring about - Especially with how The Rehearsal and Not Okay resolved themselves, both were really well done and affecting. It also helped both were hilarious. Thanks for the recommend :)

I wasn't bored by Resurrection but I didn't finish it. I may revisit it, but it hits on a tragedy from my past, and it's addressed in a strange and disturbing way. I like disturbing horror but that occurrence is my personal limitation I guess. Speaking of Rebecca Hall, The Night House > When I Consume You. Hey, Emma! I've seen new Lucile Hadzihalilovic's movie online this August, it's called "Earwig". Very dark, very strange, very disturbing:) almost no dialogue, some animal cruelty, dentist gore, all in all has a dream like atmosphere and no single interpretation for sure. I didn't love Elizabeth Harvest either. It's been a while since I saw it but I found the way the story was presented really strange. I could be misremembering but wasn't a lot of the action recounted as backstory between characters and/or as diary entries? It almost felt like someone was explaining a movie to me which might be an odd way to put it but it felt like there was very little tension. I liked the lead actress and the concept but on the whole it felt very sterile.

I think you mean a broad term, a narrow term of horror may be what you have. As I accept more things in the subgenres as horror which means I use it in the broad sense, and you only think some things are horror which makes your meaning narrow. Just to clarify I cover horror and thriller, as well as dark cinema. I’m not too fond of boxes though
