West Side Story is probably the best remake of an already great film I've ever seen, and after a decade of Disney putting out bland, repetitive cash-grabs I'm glad it reminded everyone of what a remake can and should do.

High and Low is a masterpiece, yet quite overlooked in Kurosawa's oeuvre, just like some of his other movies set in contemporary times. Other great examples are the silently heartbreaking Ikiru and the somewhat absurd yet gripping Dodes'ka-den, which I both recommend. Most Kurosawa fans prefer The Bad Sleep Well from his 'modern' films, but I was kinda indifferent to that one.
@bencarlson4300
@bencarlson4300 2 жыл бұрын
Ikiru and High and Low are definitely at the top of his “contemporary” list, but Drunken Angel and Stray Dog also both deserve high praise (it doesn’t hurt that both feature two of the best actors of all time as co-leads)

I finally got around to watching The Matrix. I've been fully intending on watching it for several years now, and just never did. Really not sure what took me so long, it was great. Next, I watched The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. It was a Ryan Reynolds movie. I enjoy his movies but I never have anything to say about them, they kinda blend together. Lastly, I watched The Power of the Dog. As I finished it, I just thought it was decent, but the more I've thought about it, the higher my opinion raises. It definately deserves all the awards it's winning.

Uncharted (the two leads did nothing to act like the characters they're playing, but I enjoyed it nonetheless) Last Duel (won't be watching it again soon, but I did end up buying the 4k a few days later, so I definitely enjoyed it) Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Kubo and the two Strings (I watched these two with my girlfriend who had already seen them and definitely enjoyed them) And three unfortunately I didn't: The Conjuring 3 (I bought a 3 movie bluray set for the first two so I thought, why not watch the third) X-men Last Stand (because it's free on Disney+ and it was the last X-men film I'd yet to see) And singin' In the rain (I wanted to love it, but unfortunately it didn't do much for me)

My Top (>9/10) New Watches in February: 1- The Royal Tenenbaums (9.75/10) : Holy hell do I love Wes Anderson. There is not a single person in the business today who can fully flesh out four main characters and another half dozen or so side characters the way Wes does in this film. A lot of people talk about Grand Budapest, but I think this is the film he's constantly trying to recapture and recreate. The balance between the dry humor and emotion is the best he's ever done. I love this movie because it's about family strife and past trauma, yet from pretty much the second half onward you don't choose sides. You're not supposed to just think Royal is an ass the whole time, you're not supposed to think Chaz needs to forgive him or that Margot should let him be the father he never was and he doesn't shame Richie for his fall from grace or his weird love scenario. Wes respects all of his characters and it gives one of the best broken family dynamics I've ever witnessed outside of my own (oooooooof) 2- Drive My Car (9.5/10): In my opinion the best film of 2021. A movie that connects broken people over past trauma in a beautiful way. Well shot, well paced (3 hours long and I didn't get bored once). Possibly the most powerful climax I've seen in a film in a long time, and the "pre-climax" scene (in the snow, trying to avoid spoilers) was nearly as powerful to me. The prologue is excellent as well and could have won best short film on its own. The blending of the stage plays with the story of the film itself is magnificent (as well as another story, but again no spoilers). This film does not care how it's characters feel or don't feel, it does not judge them for their actions or the part they played in their own traumas: it merely hands them the wheel and gives them control, or the right to give up control, how they process and move forward. 3- The Long Goodby (9.25): God this move is so cool. Elliot Gould is awesome. A moral man in an immoral world, always doing what he thinks is right sounds corny as hell but this movie just works. He's surrounded by gangsters, adulterers, and scumbags of all kinds. This movie is paced so well from beginning to end you're always hooked and wondering where the story will go next. One of my favorite noirs of all time, it does a great job selling the atmosphere and tension without it feeling gritty or dirty or using over the top violence. Marlowe don't give an f about nothing, he does his job, looks cool while doing it, chirps some goons and stops for some delicious Courry brand cat food on his way home. I give Drive My Car the edge due to it's emotional punch, but this movie is still fantastic. 4- A Silent Voice (9.25/10): What does it mean to forgive someone? What does it mean to forgive yourself? Does everyone deserve forgiveness? Do you deserve forgiveness? Can you erase past trauma someone has caused you, or rather can erase from yourself the feelings you know you've caused? It can be easy for the person you tormented to forgive you, but can their family? Their friends? How subconsciously does the pain bury itself? Watch this film. Bring tissues. Be kind.

totally agree with everything you said about belfast. i feel like you’re the only one i’ve seen to share my opinion. it just misses the mark on everything.

Also I'm with you on Howl's Moving Castle. The first two thirds or so is some of my favorite Ghibli, the end just loses me. I'm not sure if it's the "wtf"-ness or the pacing but it just doesn't work as well for me. Still an excellent movie don't get me wrong, I just thought that halfway through it was gonna be Spirited Away level

I couldn't get through three episodes of euphoria. I don't know if I'm missing something, but I thought it was a mess from the start

I watched a lot of ex-Yugoslavia movies because I'm from there and I am just starting to realise how many globally underrated masterpieces we have. Works from Kusturica (Underground, When Father was Away on Business) and Dragojevic (Pretty Village, Pretty Flame, Wounds) should really be seen around the world! They just embody that typical Balkan tragicomedy/intensity with excellence.
