I really think Barry deserves a larger spotlight, it's such a well done series down to every point, the cinematography, the editing, its humor, its darkness, the acting, tension, the writing, the pacing. It's all so perfect and it's crazy how engaging it remains from start to finish while accomplishing so much good every episode in just 30 minutes.

It keeps pulling off tonal shifts that shouldn’t work, but somehow always do through the writing, performances, timing, and shot composition. It also has just the right amount of surrealism while being grounded in real consequences for the characters

Honestly I didn’t really think it was good, still didn’t seem very different from all the mainstream modern movies people complain about. Just a basic story with basic stereotypes as characters. There was definitely some material there, some of the action scenes were well shot and definitely felt powerful. This may be very niche, but I’m angry that not a single person died in this movie, like half a dozen times a character was predictably saved “out of nowhere”. Made me root for the bad guys, they were better at flying the jets and should have won. Basically I don’t know why everyone thinks this movie isn’t just propaganda and Memorial Day bait.

on another note i think it could honestly work if barry ended with a feature length film as it’s finale. a fourth season is already happening, but it sort of feels like a fifth one won’t be fully necessary. that might change with whatever they’re doing for season four, but a movie to finish out the series could honestly be kinda epic. to quote noho hank “i’m just riffing”

Nice, I wish I had gotten a film class like that. Ozu is so good at making stories that are really emotionally impactful because they're very real and grounded. If you're digging into Cronenberg films, it's probably obvious to say this, and you may have already seen it, but The Fly is his unquestionable masterpiece, and is truly one of the greatest films ever made. It's hands down the best body horror film ever, but it's also incredibly emotional and moving in addition to how gross and just impeccably made it is. If you've never seen it, watch it immediately. If you saw it once years ago when you would have only looked at it like some gross out horror film, watch it again. That's Cronenberg's magnum opus, without a doubt.

I personally thought Top Gun was really well done and was able to enjoy it a lot. BUT. I recognize that movies like this can influence the more impressionable among us to think that global conflicts are black and white and that the US military will always be the clear hero (and somehow underdog?). And that's not awesome. I think it's ok to be a fan of the movie and take issue with the very real propaganda at the same time

I’m at 3:03. Paused. I’ve had this thing where it’s like “why hadn’t I seen films that feel different?”. Almost like all the films I see kind of feel the same and blend, yet also don’t. Yet I know there’s just more that I’ve occasionally seen. I think I might have just connected the dot that though cinemas have a aspect in this, the dynamic is also heavily played into what I watch on tv. The tv guide shows either literal repeats of films or films that now that I’ve seen and keep seeing all of them, feel like this. Huh.

This is what I've watched this month: I've never actually watched Game of Thrones in my life, but due to how famous it got, I was tempted to watch it. So far I am halfway through season 1 and I gotta say - yeah, people weren't joking. Holy shit this show is good. I'd say the only thing I dislike is the pilot, I think it's a boring slog where nothing really happens of any note and may be the worst opening for any series I've ever seen besides, I dunno, maybe Torchwood? Like that is a BAD opener to a fucking great series. First half of GoTs1 = 9/10 Before GoT, I watched Westworld's first season. It's also fantastic, and EXTREMELY thorough, dark sci-fi at its best. Sometimes it felt like it was going nowhere but wow the finale made me think twice about that. I won't spoil anything but let's just say there was a twist in the finale that may be the most shocked I've ever been to a twist... ever? The execution was impeccable. Also, Westworld reminded me how phenomenal of an actor Anthony Hopkins truly is. Westworld s1 = 9/10 Then I watched Lightyear. I know people really don't like this movie, but I had such a good time. It was emotional, fun, the animation was fucking beautiful, I loved how they humanized Zurg into a fantastic villain (which blew my expectations for the villain - I thought they were going to go ahead and just have him be a Darth Vader rip-off, but wow I was impressed on what they did). Michael Giacchino is a fucking mastermind as always, and Chris Evans makes a surprisingly solid Buzz Lightyear. An easy 8/10. Not Pixar at its best but loveable Pixar nevertheless. Then, because Lightyear made me in the mood for animation, I rewatched my fav animated movie: Rise of the Guardians. Seriously, what a perfect movie. The fact that people slept on this blows my mind. The villain might be my favorite villain ever, the story is unique and wonderful, I love it so much. 10/10, a film I will rewatch any day. And to top it all off I watched Doctor Who Series 4 again. First half (as I remember) kinda sucks, but the second half may be the best final half to any sci-fi show ever. It serves as one long barrage of insanely unique ideas and I will never forget the first time I watched those episodes. Because each episode is in effect their own movie, I'll quickly go and rate each of the 13: First half: Partners in Crime: Fun yet brainless, kinda obnoxious but in a good way. 6/10 The Fires of Pompeii: Hideously boring with an ending that makes it all slightly worth it. Still nothing I would ever rewatch. 4/10 Planet of the Ood: Weird, nonsensical, an overrated and dumb episode. 3/10 The Sontaran Stratagem: My lids were closing. Not how you do a Part 1. 3/10 The Poison Sky: Very fun, Sontarans stand out, a memorably funny ending with an incoherent and disappointing conclusion. 6/10 The Doctor's Daughter: Obnoxious in the not-so-fun way. 3/10 The Unicorn and the Wasp: Stylish and fun, hurts to watch becuz of who it's written by. Still can't deny it's fun, though. 7/10 Second half (where shit gets good): Silence in the Library: Intense, poetic horror at its finest. One of the most solid 45 minutes I have ever witnessed on a television screen. 10/10 Forest of the Dead: A little hokier yet just as intense. A crazy finale that keeps going and going. Magical but... it's hard to beat that first part. 9/10 Midnight: INTENSE. Whoa! So intense it's actually kind of hard to watch. The better version of The Monsters on Maple Street (Twilight Zone). 10/10 Turn Left: Poetic and strange, a little hokey, sweet and sad and unnerving in all the right ways. Powerhouse acting from Catherine Tate. 8/10 The Stolen Earth: A powerhouse episode for Who. It doesn't stop moving from the first minute onwards; Avengers level but WAY better than those movies anyway. 10/10 Journey's End: A little slower, WAY weirder (honestly might be the strangest episode of any TV show I've ever watched, and I've watched Twin Peaks!) but still awesome. 9/10 And that's what I watched this month. I'll update you next month! (I know you probably won't read this, but hey it's a good writing exercise)

New reviews and rewatches: Bo Burnham Inside Outtakes 4.5/5 - As a whole, I'd say it deserves a 4. But the way I felt, sitting with it, knowing how important Inside is and was to me, this only made me love it more. Top Gun: Maverick 4/5 - I'm not the biggest fan of movies like this one, but I was absolutely into it the whole time. Only reason it isn't a 4.5 is that there was no scientology. The Amazing Spider-Man 3/5 - I used to adore this movie as a little kid. With that in mind, it's really fucking boring. Scre4m 3.5/5 - Still don't know why I watched this movie, but it was free, and it was pretty good. Horror's not really my thing either, but it was a fun time. RRR 5/5 - One of the only reasons I still want Netflix. Shit, it's good. Favorite movie of the year so far. Why can't big budget Hollywood ever make a masterpiece that completely enthralls me the whole 3 hours? The Simpsons Movie 4/5 - They killed Green Day in this movie. Lightyear 3/5 - Possibly the most pointless animated movie made this year. Wait, no, Buck Wild. Thor: Ragnarok 4/5 - I only watched this movie because I was fully convinced the new Thor was coming out on June 24th for some reason. That being said, still good. The Mist 4/5 - Again, horror, not my thing. You know what is? Fucked up endings. Barry S3 5/5 - Yeah, seriously. It's that good. Stranger Things 4/5 - Definitely a return to form for the show, and I'm genuinely excited for the next two episodes literally tomorrow. However, there are so many ways these two episodes could destroy what we've got going here, so I can't help but be worried.

Double indemnity is a good example of how your age or background can affect your film viewing. I'm 55 years old and so I grew up watching leave it to Beaver in reruns when I got home from school. I didn't really like it but everybody watched it because it was all that was on really. Fred McMurray played the father on that show and that is the sole roll that he was known for. Years later when I finally saw Fred McMurray as this kind of sleazy guy in a sexual relationship it was very hard to believe. As I got further away from my leave it to Beaver years I took Fred mcmurray's role for what it was and really enjoyed the film. I'm guessing that people who watch this film now might likely have never heard of leave it to Beaver or if they had, have never watched an episode and don't know who Fred McMurray was.
