Initial commit! One of my best friends went vegan and we still tight. How can anyone drop their friends for a lifestyle that doesn't even affect you personally that's just horrible. Throwing away a whole friendship and memories and good times because your friend stops wanting to harm animals. Damn. Wanna be friends ?

I was surprised because some of the most important people in my life reacted to me going vegan with anger. It was as if me going vegan was insulting to them.

Marta M. It’s taken me some time to realize that by being vegan, which is unarguably a healthier, more conscientious diet, we are inadvertently making them think about their unconscious food decisions. You know? So many people mindlessly consume animal products, and vegans make them face the fact that perhaps it isn’t what they should be eating. Thus the anger. Hang in there. ♥️
@Luffa187

Yeah, i didn't expect my family to react the way they did. I got separated from my family because of this very thing. They started a discussion with me one night and i debunked all their arguments for eating animal products and ultimately they took it as an insult when i proved that their ethical system was not logically consistent. People who eat animal products will very often go into a very defensive and angry mood instead of questioning their own way of living. Be careful with family when it comes to veganism. Things can go south very quickly even if they are faced with facts and logic from your side. You never know how they will react.

That's so unfortunate :( I think people become automatically defensive because they're forced to look inward at their own actions

Same! There were actual fights, one of my cousins still won't talk to me? But it's been over a year and everyone just accepts it now, the only thing that bothers me is when everyone wants to get together for dinner it's always at a steak house or something, never a place where we can all eat what we want any Mexican, asain, any non American restaurant would work. I feel like it's done that way on purpose sometimes...

Went vegan overnight also and basically just took extra time in the grocery store for a couple weeks, reading all the ingredients and googling them. Lol. I did a bunch of online research too and my mom gave me a ‘veganism for dummies’ book (so helpful!!) and I purchased other books too. So I wouldn’t say I researched it all BEFORE going vegan, but in the first little while of being vegan b/c I wanted to be doing it right. I now strive to eat a variety of different food in order to get in my nutrition and don’t count calories/nutrients at all.

I totally agree with every point that you made. Years ago I tried to go vegan overnight because I watched food inc. At a point in my life where I was eating take out every single day. It turned into a month of me eating fries, bread, vegan chilli, and nothing else. To eventually failing and giving in to meat again because I knew nothing. Once I really learned how to cook and I realized absolutely anything I want I could make a vegan version of, I had no problem at all going vegan. Now I cook everyday and I enjoy food way more than I ever did eating meat. I put so much effort into my food now and it’s so delicious. ☺️🌱

I went vegan overnight. After I had my daughter I understood. I looked into her eyes and I realized...holy shit.. I’ve been eating another animals baby. I drank the breast milk of another mom...and it hit me so hard. I’m vegan for the animals but people forget vegan doesn’t always mean healthy. You can easily eat way too many processed foods. What’s important is to have a balance eat more veggies and fruits but it’s okay to eat sweets and stuff like that too just don’t over do it and you’ll be okay. ❤️

Debbie Candice the issues is being in the UK it's not all vegan friendly the plastic money is made from animals which caused a uproar here, but there is nothing that can be done to change that. Plus the limitations of where you can eat that's vegan friendly too. Though it's on a small rise we're not quite there yet. And I feel at times is being vegan 100% the right thing as it's not just about what we consume. It's what we dress in products we use etc etc checking everything to make sure it's vegan friendly. And with my family who besides me dislikes vegetables or anything remotely healthy I still have to cook meat for them, as I don't believe in forcing my own beliefs on them.

royalpython I’m just seeing your reply but I agree with you I’m in the USA but In the area I live there are not many vegan options restaurant wise and I have to go to the biggest farthest grocery store for nutritional yeast and veggie burgers and etc because the stores in my area are most low income low priced basic grocery stores with larger varieties of frozen foods and prepackaged foods, and also my live in boyfriend still eats meat and junk food and drinks soda all of the things I’m cutting out I still prepare for him so I completely get it it’s all a process and I’m growing stronger everyday hope your journey is going well ❤️

How are you doing now? That's what I did when I was 13 years olds I went Vegetarian overnight, next year cut out milk replaced it Plant-Based dairy, but still had dairy products. At 20 gave up Eggs an started eating more Plant-Based Dairy products. At 15 years old and 16 years old I had cut dairy out completely but started eating Indian Food an started eating dairy products again. I'm 25 Years old now. I'll be 26 this year and after my baby is born and I'm 26 it'll be 13 Years Meat Free. My boyfriend/Fiancé is doing something special for me, but since I got pregnant we might just go to my favorite Vegan Restaurant or go to a Vegan Restaurant out of town

I didn't have a transition (maybe days) My tips are very simple: Don't join in a vegan community so quickly cuz lots of opinions, lots of suggestions will confuse you Don't try to be a supervisor of other's diets. Don't overwhelm 'superfood', of course you can have vegetable oil instead of coconut oil Don't follow any vegan diets, eat what you want to eat or normally eating Beautiful photos only exist on social media

Probably the best advice for any Vegan and that's coming from a meat eater who absolutely despises "most" Vegans and debates those kind you are speaking of, into the ground. Why? Cause they are usually pretentious liars, who are like weird cultists trying to convert others and they use some VERY underhanded tactics to that end. Lies, lies and more lies and logical fallacies and propaganda. You advice is a recipe for "how to be a chill, sane Vegan" and I like it. This is what "old school" "normal" Vegans were like and I had friends who were in high school. This new breed of alt left, social media, SJW, Fascist militant Vegans is sickening and old school Vegans absolutely hate this new breed of them. They are an embarrassment. Make it "your" choice, don't listen to other Vegans (cause many of them are pretty stupid actually) and NEVER try to push it on others or try to convert them or anything. People will like you better for it. If you don't, then prepare yourself for a whole lot of criticism, cause those are the kind of Vegans the rest of us absolutely hate and are not afraid to say so. You'll get an earful if you turn into one of "them".

Before going vegan I was considering it for about 2 years but never went through with it because I was living with my parents and made some excuses. I actually started cutting out dairy because I'm lactose intolerant and had been researching a lot. Since living on my own I went vegan and have never looked back. I don't crave meat and it actually disgusts me a bit because I just see the dead animals.

I totally agree with your first point! I was vegetarian for 4 years prior to going vegan two years ago, and even going vegetarian was a process I worked up to. I have SO many friends who tried to vegan overnight after the new year, and a week later they're off the vegan train. Taking it slow is the best way to ensure the progress will last ☺ I can also relate to the third point, I'm the only vegan in my class and so many people come up to me and say "you're so cool for a vegan" or "I didn't know vegans could be so chill and normal" and I really think this promotes the notion that being vegan is becoming normalised and its not crazy 😂

Doesn't matter whether it's slow or fast, 84% of Vegans will fail in the first year anyway and a good portion of the rest will quit within 3 years. That's just a studied fact. Glad you are a "chill" normal Vegan though, that's cool. It's becoming a rarity these days, cause the militant Fascist loudmouth Vegans are taking over it seems. What you are talking about, is the Vegans I kinda liked growing up and had friends who were "chill" old school Vegans. This new breed of them, what a bunch of vile, lying pieces of shit they are and they are the ones I truly hate. I have no problem with chill Vegans.

Great topics! I’ve consciously purchased leather work boots as a vegan because I didn’t give myself enough time to look for non vegan ones with all the requirements my work had given me. In the end, she ordered calamari 🙄. From another perspective, I live in rural MN with family in WI, where hunting and farming are huge parts of the culture. I started eating vegan for health reasons and have a few friends who have been vegan for years solely because of health reasons. I have since made the ethical/environmental connection thanks to research and awesome people like you. However, because of the culture I am in, most people who I talk to about how I eat are less offended and more interested when I talk about the health side. I think your last point can be strengthened if we encourage people to use what most aligns with their values (health/ethics/environment) as a reason to stay vegan. Whatever the reason someone goes vegan is a good one if it means they can stick to it. Go vegans! 😁

Something I was thinking about when Rose talked about being a “normal” Vegan is how great it is when my non vegan friends (ie pretty much all of my friends) want to go to vegan restaurants and try new food with me. I have gone to a few vegan events and things and I genuinely didn’t love the people that much because we were all soooo different. Just in that honestly veganism, for me at least, is just sort of the way i make personal choices. It doesn’t have anything to do with where I grew up or my sense of humor or anything like that, those are the things i have in common with my real friends. I’d rather turn them vegan (or vegetarian, even for the times we hang out) than make new friends based on that one thing in common. And then I get to live in a more vegan world with the people I already like and care about.

I guess I had a pretty unique experience when I became vegan... my parents were totally ok with it, they kinda didn't fully understand it at first (they thought it was a vegetarian diet) but now that they do they're totally ok with it. they are not at all interested in the lifestyle but I feel like you just have to lead by example and like you said, be a part of society and still be social and not push veganism down everyone's throats every single waking minute. my grandparents are a different story though... the older the generations, the more stubborn they are I guess.

Tami Torossian I’m only vegan for health lol meat and dairy grosses me out so much but then again ive never really liked meat that much besides bacon and chicken and i’m hella lactose intolerant so it wasn’t that hard for me in that department. However where I live vegan things are pricier and I didn’t have the best job so it was hard because of my economy at first but when I kind of educated myself on what I needed to and didn’t need to eat it became easier!

Don't act like agriculture is not guilty too, you biased twit, Sigorina. There are numerous environmental consequences to the Vegan diet as well. Fucking stop believing that debunked Cowspiracy nonsense. It's bullshit. If anything will save the soil from your monocrop, soil ripping, antiquated pesticide using agriculture, it's actually livestock farming. It can renew that unusable land faster than just leaving it sit for decades till it renews itself.

I’d say the biggest weakness with becoming vegan is the all-or-nothing mentality. People expect to eliminate every animal product right away, and it’s, indeed like you said, just like losing weight. Research, research, research. Make smaller swaps and transition. Don’t make things so hard for yourself and don’t be so hard on yourself either! 💛☺️
@Luffa187
@Luffa187 6 жыл бұрын
I see your point, but a lot of people need to eliminate everything right away. Once i saw the ethical connection i just couldn't consume any animal products at all and it forced me to do a lot of research quickly. Knowingly putting animal products in my mouth after knowing the connection just didn't sit right with me. It's rough right away, but like you said, research is the key. I'm sure most people would succeed better by gradually eliminating animal products, but that wouldn't have worked for me personally. I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling this way, but ultimately you should choose the road you think you have the best chance at success! :)

I fail mostly because of my allergies/ intolerances. Almost all nuts/ seeds, soy products and coriander. Those foods are in so many products that it's just not easy. Especially not because vegan recipes use those ingredients MORE as well. When I check out vegan recipes I can't eat about 80%+ of them. And it's not like I can actually find many vegan recipes to begin with that are also manageble. (So no 28 ingredient recipe with weird ingredients that I can't even buy over here!) Everyone online keep saying it's so easy. Well for some of us it's just not. So I appreciate this advice. I decided to go vegetarian (as some kind of hard baseline for myself) with the aim of becoming vegan and eat most of my meals vegan now. Sometimes it does frustrate the crap out of me though, especially when eating out. If someone knows a good place to find recipes that don't contain these ingredients, please let me know.

Hey! Here's a tip that might help (or might not). Sit down with a pad of paper and write down five foods that you eat pretty often and like. For me that would be pasta, burritos, hamburgers, pizza, and tuna salad. Obviously you already make all those foods without your allergies. So go through each of them and figure out a way to take out or replace the animal products from those foods you like, without adding foods you're allergic to. Pasta usually has cheese in the sauce so I buy sauce without milk. For burritos I just leave off the cheese or add some vegan cheese when I'm splurging, and fill it up with beans. I get veggie burgers pretty often and leave off the cheese. For pizza I buy a cheeseless pizza or make my own with vegan cheese. I found a recipe for chickpea "tuna" salad that I love and eat all the time now. When going vegan, you don't have to overhaul your entire diet and eat like someone else. Just take life one meal at a time. Make all the food you usually eat and take out the animal products. Make sure to replace those calories by upping the portion a little or adding something else so you're not starving! Best of luck to you!

I was in an online discussion for college (you'd think there would be some etiquette). The assignment asked to discuss an ethical issue. I briefly discussed factory farming as it was an ethical issue I knew the most about. I had someone become very angry and they made many hurtful statements. I emailed them and said I would like to address their concerns but privately through email as the conversation had turned from the original conversation of the thread. They spewed hateful words and called me many names to the point that I had to email our professor and explain the situation and ask for assistance in neutralizing the situatuon. Over the course of the class they continued attacking other students to the point that they were dropped from the University. People are very angry for no reason sometimes

Doing research is deffo the most important thing and I'm really enjoying learning about it! I always tell people to think more of HOW you eat than WHAT you eat ( or don't eat ).... I found many ways to eat my fave foods / dishes fairly quickly - didn't have much of a problem approaching things from that perspective. I make seitan and panisse for sandwiches, sub mushrooms in spaghetti sauce for meat, make "taco meat" from steel cut oats, breakfast sausage from reg rolled oats, make my own cheese sauce as well as butter. I never really had much of an issue not eating steak or fried chicken or whatever would be a typical focus when thinking of "what will I miss?".

You know, I have always been a person that cares and loves nature, I have always felt "hate" towards humans. One thing that made me sad often was the fact that in my whole life I have never met anyone (other than my tween sister) that makes the effort of fighting for nature and animals, to make small changes in their lifestyle, no to buy leather, not to go to zoos, not to eat meat or any animal product, not to buy things that come in a plastic packages, not to accept disposable plastic, etc. Ways to help are many, yet, of all the diferent things that a person can do to be friendly with the environment, I've never met a single person that makes even one effort. I been watching a lot of vegan youtubers lately and I've discovered that there are a lot of people out there that share the same values as me. Thank YOU. :)

I'm really struggling with number 6. I was giving myself the whole year of 2018 to get veganism right but I lost ten pounds in the first month and haven't been able to gain it back despite calorie counting to gain. My problem is that I hate every new recipe I make and what's worse is that I hate them so much that I end up wasting them. I try to pawn them off on other people but because they suck nobody wants them. It's extremely frustrating. It's important to note that I also had food aversion when I was an omnivore but at least I had 36 years of finding a few things that I could stand to eat. Basically this change of lifestyle is killing me but I'm so determined that I will not give up.

momcom5 Consider watching the 5-minute meal series by the Happy Pear. Those recipes are quick, tasty and relatively cheap. They love garlic and savory stuff. Warning, they love not peppers. I usually cut down on the heat level. Learn how to make Tempeh Bacon. I use those in sandwiches, stir fries, etc. So meaty in texture that I've fooled non vegans. The Righteous Reuben sandwich is a particular favorite. I make Tempeh in bacon like slices and in cubes. Best burger I've had so far is the sweet potato black bean burger by Minimalist baker. I really love roasted cauliflower and chickpeas. Really savory and filling. You can mix it up so many ways. But roasting them with oil and slices of garlic, the chickpeas will be crunchy deliciousness. I've got about 5 different, simple recipes, that change the flavors. This is a kid favorite. Roasting spaghetti squash with olive oil and stirring in garlic, olives, tomatoes, basil aftsr its done cooking is divine and so easy.

Theoretically speaking: You want to blend-in at work as a normal, not too extreme vegan. Your work place is sponsoring an animal cruelty event, like a rodeo, so everyone gets a free ticket. Do you go, so that you’re fitting in at work, or do you not go, and then you’re a weird vegan? You’re not paying to go, since the ticket is free. It’s things like this that have me confused, trying to have a social life, but not wanting to participate in cruel events
@brittw9953
@brittw9953 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go for a couple of reasons. One, I would have a difficult time bearing witness to the cruelty involved now that the switch has flipped in my brain and I see other living creatures as deserving of a life free from unnecessary pain, fear, etc. Two, even if I were not supporting the event with my money, my attendance would be a physical show of support. I would not attend a rodeo event, circus with animals, or zoo regardless of whether it cost money, were free for me, or were free in general for everyone. Just because my dollars aren't going towards it doesn't mean it's okay. Your presence sends a message. If I weren't vegan, and didn't attend such an event, would that make me "weird?" Not likely. It's no one's business why I do or do not attend such an event, so I wouldn't immediately announce, "I'm not going because I'm vegan and that shit is cruel and unethical!" And if someone did ask, then I'd tell them, "I'm vegan." If they asked more questions, I'd answer their follow-ups. Maybe I'd inadvertently cause someone to consider animals and entertainment in a way they haven't before. Points for veganism! If not, I haven't supported something that I am ethically opposed to. Still points for veganism!

I actually was in a really similar situation. I was on a trip with many of my peers, it was to Australia and part of the trip included visiting a crocodile farm, like the kind they use to make crocodile leather. The way the trip was (it was a bunch of students with a couple adult chaperones) the crocodile farm visit was included and required. I went and felt terrible about it during and afterward. But it really couldn't be avoided if I wanted to participate in the whole trip altogether. It was conflicting for me. I still consider myself vegan even though I consciously chose to go on the trip, and hence visited the croc farm. And honestly it reminded me of why I was vegan and how I wanted to stay vegan. I don't want to go to any zoos or aquariums or croc farms ever again. I don't regret the trip. Does this make me a bad vegan? I don't think so... But everything is subjective.

She also hast 3 kids that don't want to eat vegan at all. So it's pretty hard for her. So yeah, don't force yourself to do something, because it will most likely fail. Take your time and do it slow if you have to. :)

I was vegetarian for 9 years and went vegan overnight over a year ago. I never realized how much it would change my life and it was very difficult at first but I'm so glad I did it!!

You might as well try. I went vegetarian accidentally then vegan accidentally lol. Said I'd try both for a month then lost track of time and then just didn't want the meat or dairy again

Thanks so much for this video... about 2 months ago, I went vegetarian mon-fri with "meat/cheat days" on the weekends... since then, I find myself not cheating or craving meat... I also noticed that I began making a lot of accidentally vegan meals for the week, so I've decided to mindfully transition to a vegan m-f diet with vegetarian weekends with the hope of fully transitioning to strict vegan in a few months... your information on b12 may have actually been life saving as I had no idea that was something to look out for! And I really appreciated your take on slipping up, being human, and maybe having that rare piece of cake... I'm so happy I found this channel- liked and subscribed

Yes!! Well put. I’d make a whole video on the “mix yourself in with society” and like how we should remember that we weren’t always there (patience, educate instead of shaming) and also to not bash others for slipping up. I really think that is crucial and you explained it well!!

I'm just wondering . Would you own a pet? I mean if you love animals you'll wanna take care of one in your home and that seems fairly normal but then isn't it the same as keeping a zoo animal in captivity ? I mean birds are meant to be free flying. Cats probably are meant to be roaming the wilderness in reality and dogs in packs in the wild, fish in the seas lakes and rivers etc not a bowl. so are you against keeping pets if you don't go to the zoo?
@CheapLazyVegan
@CheapLazyVegan 6 жыл бұрын
MiuNya I'm not against pets as a whole. certain types of pets, particularly those that are forced from the wild into pet stores, I am against. But dogs and cats, for instance, have been domesticated for such a long time that most of them would not survive in the "wild" or the streets. So I don't believe it's the same as keeping animals in a zoo. BUT I don't believe in buying dogs or cats from breeders or pet stores or breeding animals to become pets. There are so many unwanted dogs and cats that need homes so adopting am animal that needs a home is an ethical choice, in my opinion.

Humans have caused the overpopulation of cats and dogs and it is our responsibility to take care of the outcome. I would never "buy" a pet because that supports puppy/kitten mills but there are so many than need rescuing or face death so I have not ethical issue with that. I would have a harder time with people that keep exotic pets though that aren't normally bred to be human reliant. Many of those are taken straight from the wilderness or "mills" and I don't support that.

i'm obsessed with your channel! it's exactly what i've been looking for and didn't even know it! i travel A LOT for work and attend a lot of business-related social events. i can deal with finding something to eat...but i have a really tough time with the shaming! i am also surprised at people's reaction to learning that i love a plant-based diet. i was wondering if you have any quick/lazy tips for traveling and socializing away from the comfort of your home kitchen? thanks so much for your channel. it's super rad.

What about thanksgiving? Do you sit at a table where people are celebrating the ritualized slaughter? For me it is worse than just another meal with carnivores because of the way it is woven into the fabric of our culture.

I go to Thanksgiving dinner, eat beforehand, and partake of small portions of food that doesn't have animal products in it. Since butter is pretty much ubiquitous I give myself a pass and eat dishes containing it. Thanksgiving is really about being with family and friends, relatives you may not have seen in a while, so I shift my focus from food to that.

I've thought of making deep fried cauliflour for Thanksgiving and tricking people into eating it.
@thoughtfuldonut6296

Thanksgiving is hard but I tend to just stay to myself and avoid the animal products. Also don't trick people into eating vegan food, be honest and tell them what it is and let them try it. I've seen some people get weirdly offended and even more distanced from the thought of veganism because they were tricked into eating something vegan once. People are weird but it's important to give a positive outlook on a vegan diet so others may be more interested in what you have to say.

I agree about not tricking people, besides by the time Thanksgiving has rolled around you've already had two legit holidays (April Fools or Halloween) to get that out of your system. 😨 Perception (marketing) is everything, so the word "vegan" should just be left out of the description. Far better to say something along the lines of: " I wanted to contribute something that I really enjoy eating, share it with y'all. If you try some make sure to tell me what you think, bc I'm always tweaking my recipes". You may even get some positive input with this approach. One year I brought vegan gluten free double chocolate chip cookies with walnuts, and no one was the wiser... well until they were all gone, then I just couldn't resist sayin'...😈

I was raised vegetarian. My mom added in chicken and fish by the time I was 12. Didn't have a steak until I was 20. So at 30 something when I watch Cowspiracy it was easy for me to go on a completely vegan diet overnight! Then I continued to do tons of research, met with our pediatrician and nutritionist before putting my kids on a plant-based diet. Incorporating a vegan lifestyle with clothing, makeup and other products, was a progressive change. Now 4 years later we couldn't be happier! It is definitely a worth while process. Never going back. ( mistakes were also made along the way, just keep learning and growing and moving forward don't give up! )

Fox Girl then switch, why do something you hate? Everyone's got the same amount of time in the day there are plenty of vegans out there so no matter what ur schedule is it should be easy if u actually don't like eating meat like u said. If ur lying to yourself and are doing it for the wrong reasons it won't stick though
