I have used a compact compressor from Harbor Freight ($70). It looks and works like the more expensive Iwata compressors. I have had the same one for 4 years!

That’s fantastic and for the price amazing 🤩 I am sure there are cheaper options as you pointed out, however most small ones are single piston and don’t come with a tank therefore they are perfect for smaller artworks and airbrushing for shorter periods of time , but I always recommend that you try and get one with a tank if you plan to do larger artworks and or murals as it will last and allow you to get through the project without overheating 👍🏻

Agreed... They have good stuff at decent prices. I have tools from them I purchased in the '70's!

Been watching airbrushing videos for the past month and this is hands down the best intro video. Thank you!

California Air makes $100-$200 air compressors that while not silent, are very quiet compared to normal compressors. They have mufflers that work surprisingly well. Similar to an Iwata Power jet pro's noise level but 300$ less with bigger tanks and more CFM so you can run more air brushes at the same time or even bigger ones. You could get a compressor and a good iwata side feed( with the bottles and gravity feed cups for volume or detail) for $300-ish and be able to do almost all types of air brushing. It's very easy to branch out from there. Even the Iwata Neo line wouldn't be a bad starter gun either. Also, you can just turn the hose inside those suction feed bottles to point forward so you can tip them without losing paint draw at the bottom of the bottle.

As a beginner, I appreciate your airbrush videos. Could you possibly do a series on airbrush needles. Explain what sizes are available, when to use each type and what the results would be for each. Thanks in advance Richard

I haven’t personally heard of that particular brand but there are loads of quality Waterbased paint brands out there . I am glad you have found one that works for you and I always recommend that you stick with whatever paint works best for you…I love Trident and also use some Createx as that’s what I’m familiar with, but happy to hear about other brands and love seeing what people create with their preferred brand of paint 👍🏻 thanks for your comment and glad you enjoyed the vid .

The creos 289 is one of my favorite brushes great price and definitely can move up in technique, I also recommend the stealth 3 gallon air compressor off Amazon for $200, 150 psi with a 2.5 CFM can even use a itwatas spray gun
@AirbrushAsylum2 жыл бұрын
Yes the Creos brushes are truly amazing quality brushes at a very reasonable price 👍🏻 thanks for sharing the info re : the compressor I am glad to hear that many of you are able to get a cheaper airbrush dedicated compressor which works well for you …iwata ones are fantastic but come with a hefty price tag 👍🏻

I took the advice from an internet “expert” and went to using CO2 tanks, I won’t go back to a compressor unless I have to.

Again,another usful video! Asuggestion for a fisrt airbrush could be the Iwata Revolution Cr. Gravity feed with a 0.5mm needle. At a price of 150$ cnd( at Maple airbrush suply) it's an affordable and good quality airbrush. Actyually this brush is my workhorse.

I've been trying to get started with airbrushing. I have had so much trouble just getting a proper spray let alone learning what I'm doing lol.

You are a pillar of knowledge sir, and while very experienced, quite talented as well. Like a lot of others, I have created in pencil, colored pencil, and watercolor, now, I am pulled to your arena. My question is, when buying a beginner airbrush, what price range do the cheapest brushes start say, on Amazon that would give acceptable quality for you? If I manage to get anywhere near as good as you, then I would want the best. But just to try and see if I'm any good I should spend _____? Thanks!
@AirbrushAsylum2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoy the vids. In regards to beginner airbrushes, I would recommend the GSi Creos PS.289 or the Iwata Eclipse HP.CS, they may be quite a bit more than the super cheap chinese brushes, but they will last and if you don't like airbrushing then they will also be easy to re sell at a good price, hope that helps.

Thanks for the info! I am an airbrush noob so am always looking for more info! The frustrating part so far is that the fittings are not consistent across brands so you always have to have adapters and extra bits around to make them work together.

Something I like about a workshop compressor is that with a combination water trap and air pressure regulator I can control the air pressure precisely.

I had a friend who was an amazing airbrush artist. I commissioned him to do a painting of Calif poppy’s for my gf at the time. The painting came out beautiful. I paid $400. The time and the beautiful work he put into it, if I wasn’t a friend, would or cost at least $1,000. I had a 55 Chevy belAir at the time. I asked what would he charge to do some ghost flames on the front fenders and hood? He said “ Dave, I don’t wanna insult you because you’re my friend but you couldn’t afford me and I value our friendship so I’ll just say I don’t have time.” I laughed and said “ I appreciate you not insulting me” He’d done some paintings of roses for an art show. The paintings of the flowers were so real, looked like you could lean over and smell them. He painted water drops on a few pedals. Looked like they’d roll off if you tilted the frame.
@AirbrushAsylum2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that story and your mate sounds like an awesome artist , I also totally understand re ; the ghost flame project as automotive airbrushing is extremely time consuming and expensive , always love hearing stories like this thanks for sharing 👍🏻

You left out external mix v. internal mix. Thousands of those in use. You missed using an inner tube or portable tanks that fill at the gas station. So there must be a category below 'beginner' that you are not addressing.
