What if Anakin Left the Jedi Temple with Ahsoka? - Star Wars Theory

Welcome back to another Star Wars Theory Fan Fiction!
In the clone wars, Ahsoka was framed by Barriss Offee for a crime she never committed. Up until the last moments, the Jedi Order accused Ahsoka and turned their back on her, forcing her to stand trial. When Barriss was finally brought to justice at the last second, it was shortly after this that the Jedi council apologized to Ahsoka and allowed her to come back to the Jedi Temple to continue her training. She declined. She felt that the betrayal and lack of trust they gave her wasn’t worth a second chance. Anakin tried to convince her to stay, telling her that he understands how she feels about them. However, even their strong master and apprentice bond, wasn’t enough to change her mind. Ahsoka turned her back on them and Anakin, and walked off into the sunset.
But what if Anakin walked with her. What if he was so disgusted with the Jedi for how they treated her, and came to his senses that they were just disillusioned pawns of the republic and full on walked out with her.
I believe the galaxy would have been quite different.
Two different paths we can take, as usual. Anakin becomes padme’s full time lead of security, and is paid by the republic to do so. They both settle down, have their children eventually, and Anakin watches the war from afar. Going on missions wherever Padme’s work takes her. But let’s go with option two, shall we?
Anakin and Ahsoka would train together. They would learn the ways of the force continuously, just not with the other Jedi or at the temple. This is where Palpatine would step in. He would continue to play dumb with Anakin, and pretend he didn’t know the ways of the force, however, he would still be that little fly in Anakin’s ear, constantly pulling each puppet string. He’d tell Anakin about some Sith Lords that he would encourage anakin to learn about. Peaking Anakin’s interests in broadening his understanding of the force. I don’t believe Ahsoka would meet the Martez sisters, because she wouldn’t be so alone on her day to day adventures. I believe she would be super close with Anakin and Padme.
Anakin would guard Padme on her more dangerous missions where he felt Dooku might be. And if she forbade him, he’d do it in secret, keeping a watchful eye on anyone trying to harm her.
Palpatine would hire Anakin as his personal bodyguard. He would pay Anakin handsomely, and take good care of him and Padme. Leaving the Jedi Order allows Palpatine to get closer and closer to Anakin, as the void has been created for a teacher to fill Obi-Wan’s place. They would take missions together and over time Palpatine would warp Anakin’s mind into seeing his truth of the force, his view of the galaxy and how the Jedi have corrupted everything. It would be easier now to get to Anakin, however harder to make him turn on the Jedi.
Now, it’s my understanding that Anakin’s destiny was to turn into Darth Vader, and thus setting his life into the trajectory it went, turning the tide of the republic into the galactic empire. I believe whatever life choice he makes, leaving the order or not, he would still have those dreams of her since it’s the will of the force to make him a masked machine until Luke Skywalker shows up.
However, for the sake of today’s fan fiction and not to take the easy way out, we’ll say Anakin never had those visions.
Palpatine would have to find another way to turn anakin to the dark side, which is easier than turning him against the Jedi.
As the Clones say, sorry general Skywalker, orders only. They fire upon him, as he ignites his lightsaber and deflects all blasts back at them. Before he knew what he had done, the clones were dead, and the Jedi were knocked out by the trees outside.
Padme didn’t understand, and was shocked. Anakin sent a holo message to Palpatine, who responded telling them to hide at one of his private and unknown homes, but before Anakin could leave, more Jedi and Clones arrived. Apparently they had been waiting in orbit as the Council knew that Skywalker might not let Padme go easily.
This time Master Windu came with several of his own Clones, the 187th legion.
As the LAAT touched down, he saw the unconscious Jedi and dead clones.
The two force users looked at one another.
I smell the dark side in you, young Skywalker.
As Anakin’s rage began to swell. He remembered all the times Windu tried to stop Anakin from saving his mother, even back to when he entered the temple as a boy with Qui-Gon Jinn, he forbade Anakin being trained.

Have Anakin and Padme hiding with Palpantine and eventually raising their children together in the ways of the dark side. Palpantine then executes Order 66, but during the war, Padme is killed, leading Anakin to succumb more to the dark side. Eventually, Palpantine conquers the galaxy, but Anakin and Luke would eventually go back to the light and kill Palpantine, taking control of the empire.

The Jedi have Obi-Wan contact Ahsoka; Ahsoka contacts Anakin; the Jedi secretly trace the call. Kenobi, Windu, Yoda, & Ahsoka hunt down Anakin, BUT Maul, Dooku, Sidious, & Grievous are there to meet them! This ends up in some sort of "Cantina-styled standoff" [Mexican standoff] & perhaps Ahsoka joins Anakin to fight BOTH the Sith & the Jedi perhaps allegiances change for seemingly ALL or at least most of the characters THROUGHOUT the fight! Now THAT would be FASCINATING!

I would have Obi wan confront Anakin with Ashoka, they would fight with Them eventually getting into a stale mate. You could ether have Anakin rejoin the light or go full dark side after that

It’d be cool to see Anakin and Ahsoka roaming the galaxy as “Ronin” Jedi helping those in need. Both free from the council and Palpatine’s bullshit. Just imagine the Ahsoka Mandalorian episode in this timeline. The one where she fights the mercenaries in the village and forrest. But only this time an older, wiser Anakin is also there with her kicking ass. That would be really badass imo.

The scene where the soldiers only see white lightsabers moving in the fog while she kills them one at a time was great. Seeing Anakins blue saber also moving with her in the forrest would be a really cool visual. Like two lions hunting their prey.

I definitely see that would be the most likely outcome of Anakin leaving the Jedi with Ashoka. I don’t think he would be content being a “body guard” or even just settling down. He would have to be involved in something somewhere.

@@refugeehugsforfree4151 Yea I wouldn’t expect anything less from them. Also I’d like to see them try lmao. Anakin at this point would be in his 50s and Ahsoka in her 40s. Skywalker would likely have reached his full potential because he wouldn’t be stuck in the Vader suit. Pretty sure Lucas said that means he surpasses Yoda and Sidious. Ahsoka would also be an absolute beast by this point. She would’ve had almost 20 years of constant training from the chosen one plus all the experience that comes with being that old. I don’t see them being stopped by anything less than the Death Star blowing the planet they’re standing on lmao.

I like this idea. Sure, it would be a kind of cheat card...bringing shocking info to Anakin...but I think things could evolve in some interesting ways. Alliances would fall away and new ones created. Opens many doors!

I'd love to see more of Ahsoka, as she was being trained by Anakin this entire time. Does she begin to be pulled to the dark side, or does she become wary of Anakin's draw to the dark side and confronts him?

She took on some of his attributes and traits. was corrected by Luminara. If she hadn't have left the order, she very well could have died on Mustafar trying to save him.

@@poppapalpatine7659 I doubt that Anakin would have tried to kill Ahsoka, I think that with Ahsoka and Obi-Wan together would be able to defeat Anakin without greatly damaging him though one of the two might end up killing him. I could see due to that Anakin finding out though Padme is dead that Luke and Leia are alive, all 3 of them would be refugees and train both Luke and Leia in secret while working against the Empire.

Id like a „happy ending“ since star wars has so many tragic aspects especially in the prequels imo. But i think after how anakin attacked mace and killed clones in this episode he must atleast rot in jail, if he is ever captured or he turns himself in. But maybe somehow anakin could figure out himself that palpatine is at fault for padme being accused (by f.e. Anakin searching dooku and defeating him since his power has increased and dooku tells anakin about sidious). Then anakin confronts palpatine (or maybe tells the jedi) and palpatine is arrested or defeated and anakins charges are dropped for the most part and they will live happily ever after….

@Gabriel Sidloi good point maybe palpatine would execute order 66 without anakin by his side but because anakin hasnt turned into vader and slaughtered all the jedi in the temple i think more jedi wouldve survived and if now anakin and ahsoka manage to take the chancelor togeather and kill him maybe they can somehow stop order 66 and after great losses still many jedi will have survived but they arent as dumb anymore they have learned about their flaws and see that all along they played a big part in causing this disaster and the remaining jedi decide to reform and overthink the jedi code and live by new morals

I feel as if Palpatine wouldnt have as much power on Anakin and his plans wouldn't come to fruition if Anakin left the order. But fate would still have a big villain come to play so id feel like Maul would have his army built-up since he wasn't beaten on Mandalore by Ahsoka, Bo Katan & the clones. But I feel like this story could have happened aswell.

Where I disagree is that no matter what Anakin MUST turn into Vader. I remember the clone wars mortis episodes and the father said that the future is ever changing before taking the visions of him becoming Vader away from anakin. Maybe the prophecy comes true in another way. I definitely think there’s room to take the story another direction. We need a Star Wars Disney+ show comparable to marvels “what if..?”

Realistically I see it going as you said Anakin still has the visions, Palpatine turns him to the dark side and things basically end the same way. But going with this direction and giving it a different end I think that we could have Dooku see what his master is doing and turn on him teaming with Maul to get revenge on Palpatine. Dooku publicly reveals that Palpatine is a Sith and was manipulating the whole war and he only recently learned who his master truly was. Now Palpatine takes Clones loyal to him and we have a three way war between the Republic, the Empire, and the Separatist/ Mandalorians. This leaves Anakin in a tough spot because does he trust Palpatine who he learned lied to him, if he doesn’t does he join the Republic even though he doesn’t trust the Jedi or does he work with the Separatist because he thinks both systems are so corrupt they are the lesser of the three evils. I think option 3 is the most interesting and could see the redemption of Dooku.

I believe him to be the chosen one, meaning ultimately his destiny is to bring balance to the force. However, what path he takes to achieve this shouldn't be set in stone. Such as turning into Darth Vader. Even the father said his destiny wasn't set in stone. Also, if I could change something that's canon, it would be Anakin losing his limbs and most of his powers... Everything else is near perfection. I just would love to see Anakin in his full potential. Wish it'd be canon

Ahsoka has been watching anakins movements and visits with palpatine since she noticed how their training has changed to a more aggressive combat. She has noticed how fast her master has excelled both in combat and his growth in the force exponentially. During one of Anakins visits to palpatine the force has told her she needed to pay closer attention to palpatine after his meeting with her master. She noticed him communicating with the count dooku and grievous on the hologram during which she found it peculiar that palpatine put on a dark robed hood like a sith lord. and shortly after, palpatine took out his golden hilted saber and didn't ignite, but said the time will come soon. Ahsoka moving in the shadows has learned to quiet her presence in the force which is why palpatine never fully detected anything from her, and she could've been at a safe enough distance. Having recorded this meeting and obtained evidence, she rushes to find her master and tell him about the secrets of the Chancellor. Anakin finally lets her know about the location he is at with padme. When Ahsoka finally tells all the information she obtained on the Chancellor, Anakin seems confused and is now filled with doubt. He says "it's not possible. I should be able to sense his presence in the force". Ahsoka then also explains to Anakin, " Master, I've also learned to quiet my presence in the force, that's what the Chancellor his doing at a higher level." The chancellor then appears having overheard what Ahsoka was telling Anakin, Immediately beginning to choke Ahsoka. Anakin without hesitation force pushes the chancellor, and now knows for sure, he is the Sith Lord the Republic has been searching for all along. The chancellor begins trying to entice Anakin with his words of how he needs him in order to achieve his greatest power. Ahsoka begging Anakin not to listen to him, smirks. Anakin notices and says, "snips, I'm with you". Ahsoka stands up and ignites her sabers, and she looks up to see the cavalry arrived. Ahsoka had sent a distress signal to Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, and yoda. Three legendary jedi arrive to see the Chancellor. Order him to be arrested and the Chancellor finally reveals his saber to all of them. Just as the duel begins, executes order 66. but just as the clones were about to turn, yoda decapitates all the clones with his saber and mace engages palpatine before he can make order 66 a distress signal to all clones around the galaxy. this is just what came to my mind that i had to write down and i think it would be great to incorporate this scene or ending as you will. i would be very honored if you would use this, and ive been watching your videos for years. Im an actor, model dancer, and love stories and sci-fi and the star wars saga. thank you and wish you the best with part 2

Just tossing this out there. He could crash land on the planet with those ancient embodiments of the force and starts to learn a more balanced end of the force. He been training in the light and tastes the dark.

Just have Anakin channel some Revan and actually use both sides properly to get the job done. He kinda did that already, but he was super unbalanced and a recipe for disaster.

Don’t forget about Aśoka’s allegiance to her master also. Just because things went one way with cannon. In this story with him leaving with her it would have kept that relationship even stronger. Don’t have her turn on him this time. Make sure she stays on his side. Just make Anikin walk the path between the two sides like his son did. Could have Asoka bring him back from going full dark side. He doesn’t always have to become what he did. He still has everything he loves. Let that guide him for once.

I agree. I can see a world where after they escape Naboo, Anakin contacts Ashoka and tells her what happened, and she helps him, given that Padme was one of few people that was on her side, and she will obviously empathise with her since she was also falsely accused by the Jedi. But I think she’d probably still rebuke Anakin for what he did on Naboo, even if it was in the heat of the moment. I’m also interested to see what role Obi Wan plays in this, as even if he accepts the idea that Padme is a traitor, surely he’d think there was a more peaceful way to bring her in that wouldn’t provoke Anakin. And given the events that have transpired, I’m sure he’ll want to talk to Anakin and try to dissuade him from taking this path.

@@andy84denham I think it’s probably a bit too much of a separate plot line to go into, but I could see Dooku coming to realise that Anakin is Palpy’s true apprentice and eventually he will be tossed aside and probably killed, and so he either goes to the Jedi and tells them about Sidious, or he secretly approaches Darth Maul and offers to combine their forces against Palpatine and the Jedi, and so it’s an interesting triangle. I’m not sure whether the Maul thing would work as Dooku replaced and then tortured him, and he doesn’t really like sharing power, but I can see a world where they come up with some kind of agreement and Maul betrays Dooku later. But yeah I’m not sure there’s enough time for that in a 10 minute video.

I’d love to see a “what if” fanfic where Luke is on Dagobah right after Yoda becomes one with the Force, and then the Force ghost of Obi-Wan appears. They initially disagree on how to face Darth Vader as Obi-Wan believes only force is the only way to deal with him, but Luke still sees the humanity in his father and believes he can still be redeemed. Obi-Wan reminisces for a minute, sharing a select few fond memories of Anakin with Luke, and then voices his regret of saying Anakin was murdered by Darth Vader, but perhaps being held prisoner would have been a more accurate comparison. Obi-Wan then tells Luke that he is following a true Jedi’s path, as Obi-Wan concedes that perhaps he may not have used his Light-side gifts to their full capabilities - perhaps with some more-carefully chosen words, and tugging at every heart string he could think of, perhaps he could have planted that seed of doubt on Mustafar and may have even been successful in getting Anakin to come to his senses and return to the light. He then tells Luke more about Anakin, about how he was such a powerful and heroic leader of the Republic, and then brought up Anakin’s first Padawan, Ahsoka Tano. She was a feisty little ball of fire, gifted both with strong Force abilities and defiance, rather like Anakin himself. He remembers being unsure if Anakin was up to the task of taking on a Padawan of his own when he did, but as it turns out it was a blessing for both Anakin and Ahsoka as they truly brought out the best in each other. Obi-Wan admits that he was perhaps a little envious of their relationship because Anakin was probably more comfortable confiding to Ahsoka than his old master. He could not figure out why Anakin wasn’t always completely honest and open with him - as a Master, it was his duty to listen and advise, not to judge. Maybe he was too much like the Jedi of the Galactic Republic and not enough like Qui Gon Jinn, who always made it a point to listen to the will of the Force rather the will of another entity. Obi-Wan then tells Luke to seek out Ahsoka as she would be the only living link to Anakin, and that together they have enough emotional pull to free Anakin from Darth Vader and destroy the Emperor.

Ahsoka has noticed the darkness rising in Anakin, so she contacts her old friend - Master Plo. He informs Windu, confirming Mace’s suspicions after his duel with Anakin on Naboo. The Jedi Council see Anakin as a huge threat, and a potential Sith. They begin to assemble a specialised strike team of Jedi Masters, including Obi-Wan, to track down and kill Anakin. They use Ahsoka as a mole, or a spy (Anakin is still in contact with her), and when the Jedi strike team finally confront Anakin, he realises Ahsoka has betrayed him, and he kills her/almost kills her. This should mirror his conversation with Padme on Mustafar. Ahsoka doesn’t actually know that the Jedi plan to kill Anakin. Skywalker cuts through most of the Jedi strike team like butter, and has a climactic duel with Obi-Wan in which he is left wounded, but both survive. He limps back to Coruscant to talk with Palpatine, who has revealed himself as the Sith Lord in order to frame an assassination attempt. He finds Palpatine duelling with Master Yoda, who is defeated but flees. Palpatine now has reason to issue Order 66, and Operation Knightfall happens largely as it did in ROTS.

The clone wars would have ended without Anakin, he was the best general AND the best pilot, he saved Obi-Wan and quite literally everyone else several times, I think the seperatist might have won the war earlier if he left

Post note: this was good, but it has a lot of storylines cut in the middle. I think Palpatine wouldn't even need Anakin, as I said, the war could have been won by the separatist and he could have like faked his death and became ruler as Darth Sidious alongside Grievous and Dooku. Basically the classic Sith empire idea with the main power being terror Then again, you could add a twist, where Dooku and Grievous turn on Sidious (somehow) and Anakin goes full ham killing them both in a 1v2. If Palpatine dies, Idk how it'd go. Nor do I, if he survives bec Ani gets there in time. What do y'all think?

Dont forget, Palpatine WANTED the war to be in a stalemate. Multiple times on both sides there were situation where defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory thus prolonging the war even further. And he was the one commanding both sides.

I think Anakin would try to contact Ahsoka for help, only to find out from Rex that Ahsoka is about to engage Maul, Rex tells Anakin some systems where they can hide, so now Anakin has a dilemma, help Ahsoka or hide. He thinks about contacting Obi-wan for advice, but he knows Obi-Wan would say he should turn himself in, so he contacts Palpatine, who tells him to go help Ahsoka, which he does, but when he get’s there both sides are trying to shoot the ship out of the sky, Padme’s ship crashes into the the throne room, leaving Padme unconscious, Ahsoka and Maul continue dueling, Anakin pulls Padme from the ship, and then he jumps right into the duel, killing Maul 3 strikes later, Clones then rush into the palace, guns pointed at Anakin, “General Skywalker, put the lightsaber down and hands on your head!” Ahsoka remembers what happened with her but knows there’s no escape for Anakin. She now knows what Anakin felt when she was on the run. “Anakin, please, you need to stand down!” “That’s what I said to you!” Anakin said, his face tensing up. “I came here to help you, and now you’re turning on me!” His eyes are starting to turn sith yellow. Walls start crumbling, the clones and Ahsoka start rising in the air, being chocked by the force. To be continued in part 3

I always say that the Jedi Order should have remembered "the lost twenty-two" rather than "the lost twenty". Anakin and Ahsoka may not be high-ranking enough, but they are significant enough to the Jedi Order that their disillusionment and defect to the Jedi should be remembered just as much as Dooku's

If Anakin left the Jedi Temple with Ashoka, the Galactic Empire wouldn't happen and Ashoka and Anakin would train together in the force to combat their struggles and hardships. And Anakin would've dealt with his fear of losing Padme by training himself to let go (Yoda once taught him.). Anakin would had also been stronger and wiser in the force and become a Jedi Master like Obi-Wan and Yoda.

Exactly 💯. This is like an awesome What If Fan Fiction Story. Imagine the story is titled "THIS IS WHERE THE FUN BEGINS" 😂. Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka leaving The Jedi Order and Temple during The Clone Wars would've changed so many things plus Palpatine's New Empire would have to be accelerated and his manipulation of Anakin wouldn't have that personal connection he had by grooming him as a surrogate father figure during The Prequels. They'd be like Mugen and Jin from the Samurai Champloo Anime roaming The Galaxy as Jedi in their own right bending by their own code the way Qui Gon Jinn would've done had he left The Jedi Order. Only a month and a half away until KENOBI. I can't wait to see Obi Wan and Darth Vader ONSCREEN AGAIN 👊❤️. It'll really connect The Original Trilogy shows and Prequels together through Obi Wan's relationship with Anakin before he fell and their interactions. Ewan and Hayden should speak out on the hate that Prequels undeservedly get they helped make the movies. The Prequel Trilogy wasn't terrible it had great storytelling especially Revenge of The Sith something that Sequel Trilogy lacked but even The Sequel Trilogy wasn't completely terrible it had great visual effects, John Williams music, great performances from The Original Trilogy cast of our beloved characters from Carrie, Ford to Mark and the newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam designated DRIVER and Oscar Isaac. It's just that the action choreography and story wasn't good all of the time but the fight with Snoke's Red guards in the Throne room was awesome 😎👊. Atheists have the burden of proof to explain how everything came to be and why our existence is possible without the Existence of God from an godless perspective just as Christians have to provide evidence of God's Existence and the validity of His Word. Evolution requires life to already exist in order to take any effect in living organisms so it doesn't account for the existence of Life and reality. Also evolution is impossible because it goes against The Law of entropy and the second Law of thermodynamics because evolution makes things better whereas nothing continues to get better but decays and turns to absolute destruction in the end. God's Existence is made perfectly known and observable in the universe as demonstrated in His Handiwork in the intelligently designed manner that Creation was made, human consciences and consciousness historical and archaeological evidence of God's Word being valid history, fulfillment of Bible Prophecies God in His Holiness and Righteousness could give us what we deserve in Hell for our since but He's merciful to give us free will to choose to accept or reject His gift of salvation by grace through faith in His Son Jesus. Hey Theory, loved this video. An idea for me would to have Ahsoka talk to Anakin (try and guide him) because she's close to him and he's more prone to listening to her. Ahsoka should be wary about Palpatine especially how it affected Anakin lately. Maybe Captain Rex can accompany her but I think having Obi Wan will aggravate him so maybe Obi Wan can talk to Ahsoka then she'll talk to Anakin in hiding. As to how she'll find him, maybe she'll use the force or Qui Gon can contact Yoda who will then tell Obi Wan who then tells Ahsoka. Good luck on Part 2

Then, finally, Anakin, Ashoka,Luke and Leia fight Sidious. The emperor kills Ashoka, leaving Anakin in a fit of rage.His children calm Anakin down. Anakin destroys the emperor, ending his life. Anakin starts a new order of force users,more powerful than any Jedi in the galaxy, for filling the profesy of the chosen one. Loved part 1 👍

It seems likely that once the council finds there location they would send Yoda or Obi-Wan to try diplomatic resolution. If Anakin agrees, and padme faces trial then no doubt a damning piece of evidence was placed by palpatine to have padme put to death. Causing not just Anakin to turn on the council but maybe Ashoka too with her being sympathetic to padmates situation, or Ahsoka finds out the hidden plot and exposes palpatine mid trial.

I'm not 100% sure Padme wouldn't try to handle the situation diplomatically. She knows she is innocent will try go prove that. Perhaps her quest to redeem herself would cause her to grow suspicious of Palpatine cresting a rift between her and Anakin. This will cause a split in Anakin for his allegiance towards Palpatine and his commitment to Padme. Where eventually Ashoka will come in and talk to him about everything and help him further believe Padme.

Given where things are going so far, I imagine Anakin or maybe even Ahsoka on behalf of Anakin would actually reach out to some of their friends in the wider galaxy. Perhaps Rex or, optimistically, maybe even Obi Wan, knowing that while they have been drifting apart recently, they're still friends and former comrades. Or perhaps Rex and Obi Wan conduct their own investigation the moment they hear the accusations against Padme. And rather than finally shattering Anakins faith in the Jedi order, the two working mostly independently restore his faith instead, thus ruining Palpatines plans and forcing him into more extreme measures that may or may not backfire.

Yes!! There's no way Obi-Wan and Rex wouldn't respond or start investigating such accusations, and even if they didn't hear about it directly, I expect Bail Organa would have heard about it and contacted them. Would be interesting to see what, if any, response Padme's former handmaidens would have had

Ultimately, you don't always need Anakin to walk down the dark path himself. You could easily craft an alternate origin where the paranoid and fearful Jedi effectively turn him into Darth Vader. For example, I always imagined a scenario where Luke and Leia are already born with a natural connection to the Force. The Jedi learn about them and attempt to take possession of the twins, fearful and paranoid of the power they will come to possess. This would be a rational fear given how the Sith Lord is still out there and in need of new apprentices. They'd believe the children of the chosen one had to be safeguarded... or eliminated if you subscribe to a more zealot-like Jedi Order. In any case, Padme would not be onboard, would resist violently and, either by reflex or intent, get killed by her own deflected blaster bolt. Anakin would be enraged upon returning home and the Jedi attempting to lecture or apprehend him would end poorly. Palpatine would then offer him revenge and give Darth Vader good reason to be loyal for two decades.
