NATO? This was an Australian run operation. I served in Timor Leste in 2008 as an Australian soldier and it was 90% controlled by Australia and it was since the beginning in the late 90s.
@bypass26322 жыл бұрын
Did not mean to disrespect any Australian service members. Due to the DCS Marianas map limitations there was no land base for any Australian F-18s to take off from, they are not naval capable either so cannot operate with US carriers (which seems a weird decision) and as this was a fully amphibious operation I couldn’t fit them in. Having said that I recognise I should have mentioned AUS at least or tried to include a helicopter squadron.

If this scenario had played out in 2006, aircraft from RAAF Tindal would have been over the targets days before 'NATO' arrived (it's a shame you don't have the F111 in DCS).
@Xsophos2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Fellow Aussie here, I felt the same after our previous history with INTERFET... Bring back the F-111s, F/A-18Cs with logistical support out of Darwin is an absolute no brainier - it's only an hour from East Timor to Darwin. Too bad the Dili Express isn't available among the ships in DCS either 😂
@stevenkerr14552 жыл бұрын
Sadly the F-111’s were causing most of their ground crews to develop cancer. The hours to carry out modified procedures to keep them flying against flying hours ended up being 30:1

You guys need to find a way to develop more realistic scenarios or at least use some RAAF skins. Like Peter Jones mentions below, NATO (over the other side of the planet) didn't give a rats' about Timor or Indonesia 1999 or any other time. For a moment there, looking at the headline & thumbnail image, I thought this was going to be just Harriers and a re-creation of the game "Super-VGA Harrier" (aka Harrier Assault) put out by Domark around 1992, and was one of my favorite flight sims as a kid. The flight model was considered one of the most complicated and best out there at the time. Although I felt the graphics were kind of...basic...Polygon and vector based, even all those years ago, but enjoyed the game quite a bit anyway. in 2020-21 with nothing better to do, I managed to get it working on my Mac via DosBox and got to re-live it, but with a fresh adult perspective. Still a pretty interesting sim, I think. One of the only drawbacks in the combat/damage model is that all of the enemy vics and buildings can be destroyed with Hydra rockets.

Just going to echo the comments that RAAF aircraft out of Tindal and probably Darwin would be in this scenario for sure. When all the rioting/violence happened during East Timor's separation from Indonesia, as well as Australian forces moving in, one of the USN's smaller carriers turned up there, I assume with its battle group and from what I heard at the time their communications/warnings to the Indonesians were quite blunt. It helped a lot. I'd also hear there was a force of US marines in the NT that wasn't stated publicly.

The AV8B needs to be at or ideally less than 20,000 lbs, so basically with no stores and 1/2 fuel, and for there to be very little wind, for a safe VTO. It would be done for training, and at air shows but in action it would be an unnecessary risk and impractical. The vertical landing is risky enough.
