on the point of food waste, one of my local grocery stores started taking the "ugly" produce and cutting them up into vegetable trays at a discount. i feel like it's kind of a genius idea as you could cut out some of the blemishes which would waste less food while still making some money back on the investment instead of just tossing it all away. it's a situation where everybody actually wins in some way. it's one of those ideas that seems so simple that i wonder why no one has thought of it before.

Just to add to the "India needs to adopt a more efficient dairy production system" statement, native cow breeds in India hold high cultural value to the people and these breeds have evolved to be able to withstand the harsh climatic conditions here. In comparison, Jersey cows ( the most popular foreign breed in India ) struggle to dissipate heat since the hot conditions in India are nowhere close to their natural environment. Also, there are many health risks associated with the A1 type milk that jersey cows make. From an environmental perspective, replacing native breeds will make a difference in GHG emissions like you said, but it should be noted that native breeds eat about half of what Jersey cows eat in a day. Using native breeds protects them from extinction and that's what I think should be considered important.
@mistahkurtz23513 жыл бұрын
Isn't "efficient dairy production system" just a euphemism for factory farms? I don't see how a farmer could produce milk more efficiently (by whatever metric: cost, land, water, feed, etc.) than keeping the cows in a steel shed, giving hormones to grow quicker, antibiotics to stop them getting sick in crammed conditions. So if Indians want to preserve their native breeds, they could still optimise other variables by going for a mechanised factory farm approach. The other option is to stop drinking cow milk, butter, ghee, etc. and instead rewild these cows into their natural habitat. That would be the ultimate form of respect, since that way the cows can live on their own terms independent of humans.
@kaydenl68363 жыл бұрын
@@mistahkurtz2351 “respect” that’s not respect, that’s sending them to their deaths for zero reason. Waste. Waste isn’t respectful. You know nothing about agriculture, specifically diary farming, if you think stressed, confined cows are efficient at all.
@mistahkurtz23513 жыл бұрын
@@kaydenl6836 What makes factory farming efficient are the hormones, vaccines and antibiotics that allows cramming the animals together without them getting sick in the few years they are profitable. It actually a delusion that it is possible to meet the demand for dairy, beef, pork WITHOUT factory farms. Free ranging takes vastly more land, and without hormones or antibiotics makes the process even less efficient. So my point is that people who want to eat meat / drink milk in the 21st century need to embrace the ruthless efficiency of factory farms instead of holding on to a delusion of "happy cows". If people do not want to be involved in the sadism of factory farms then they shouldn't be consuming animal products in the first place.
@mistahkurtz23513 жыл бұрын
@LBC Ulrica Free ranging cows requires vastly more land, and often the farmers use government land to graze their cows. This cause loss of biodiversity in these regions as the cows compete with native fauna, and the humans will kill any native predator that threatens their income. As I mention in my above post, factory farms use vaccines, hormones and antibiotics so that a cow can grow quicker, without getting sick compared to their natural environment. You can use Google (or your favourite search engine) to find: 1) How much land there is on Earth; 2) How much land a single cow requires in its natural lifecycle; 3) How much milk a cow "naturally" produces; 4) How much meat/dairy is consumed per capita in the developed world; 5) The world's current population. Then using this information you would have gathered it is pretty obvious that it is impossible to feed billions of people with grassfed beef, ahimsa milk, or whatever other excuse to think you are morally superior to factory farms. Finally if you want to talk about what nature "designed", I'm sure you can acknowledge the absurdity of fully grown adults suckling the teat of a ruminant. Mammals don't need to drink milk after they start eating solid food. So you are using an appeal to nature to justify a very unnatural behaviour.
@mistahkurtz23513 жыл бұрын
@@kaydenl6836 Also how is a cow dying in the wild a "waste"? That cow will feed the leopards, jackals and vultures. Fungi will decompose whatever is left into soil for the plants. Nothing is wasted if you look at the ecosystem as a whole. We can only apply the concept of "waste" to manmade creations. And yes, I would argue it is more respectful to give the animal freedom than keep it in captivity forever. There is nothing wasteful about it, unless you view the animals as your property (i.e. slaves) which is not respectful.

The cobs from corn, the stalks from wheat and rice, nutshells etc, while technically come from plants that are grown for human consumption, they are human inedible byproducts of plants that are commonly used as feed for livestock
@aaronwernz57883 жыл бұрын
I am a farmer, and you must remember that grown grain such as corn is a lot more expensive than grass or other biomass. A farmer, I suppose could only feed cows processed feed from corn but it would be extremely expensive and unproductive. Remember a farmer usually earns more buy producing more with less. Deferent farmers feed in different ways, but the goal is to usually just feed them the higher energy and expensive feeds at just the right time at the right amount to what they call finishing out. The ultimate goal is virtually always to find a way to produce more with less because you must remember the farmer has to pay for the feed. It’s the same with growing the grain. I do put chemicals and fertilizers on my fields but probably at a far lower rate than many people put on there yard, because I spend a lot of money on testing and special equipment to try and only put on the amounts that give returns. The survival of a farmer is very much connected to there ability to lower input use while maintaining production. Farmers have learned to do this extremely well in the first world that is why we have several generations of people that do not know real hunger due to there not being enough food to feed everyone. In fact farmers have done there job so well that many city people have virtually no idea how there food is produced, that is why it has became so easy for big industries to lie to them to try and get them to spend more money on food that is really no different or “safer”, or “greener” ultimately than any other food they find in the grocery store.

By the way: That's the reason Dr. Mitloehner can be so proud of the efficiency of the US beef herd, "producing 18 % of the world's beef with 6 % of the world's beef herd": Because the US cattle is fed an unnatural diet of human edible grains in CAFOs to grow fast. I always hated fry bread. It was a survival food for my ancestors, sure, wheat flour and oil provided by the military to native americans on reservations. But as soon as they were out of there they went back to hunting and sheep herding for protein and dense nutrients. You just have to eat too much starchy grains if you're stuck so poor. Diabetes and obesity is inevitable with too much fry bread. My family didn't listen and stuck with the traditional diet of our ancestors. We're not tired and anxious with diabetes and overweight. I agree with just about everything stated here, but I think the nuance should go even further honestly. It's not about pro-beef or anti-beef. it's about being for or against HOW that beef is produced and the means used to acquire it. Yes, regenerative grazing and use of unarable land sounds great, but for the most part that's not how it's going. We have massive swaths of forest being razed to make room for cattle or their feed crops. We have factory farms driving antibiotic overuse and pathogen proliferation with massive amounts of animal cruelty. I am an omnivore. I don't mind paying a little extra for grass-fed beef that I know was humanely produced. But unless we can transition to a food system where the practices described in this video are the "norm" the message here is going to go way over many peoples' heads.

One note on "nutrient dense" animal food. A lot of seeds and nuts like sesame, sunflower, walnut, almond, pistacio are highly nutrient dense in some categories more than meat. A healthy mix of those can easily replace meat. Some legumes have extraordinary amounts of nutrients. Soy is the best example. That's why 90% of soy is used in livestock farming so much. It is the most efficient thing to feed to animals. And it's also fed to cows and other ruminants as "power fodder" (that's the translation of the German name) which in our farm makes up about 30% Percent. So those 30% are indeed edible by humans.

I've been attempting to eliminate personal food waste for years and I certainly don't throw much away (even coffee grinds and other inedible bits get composted), but I think that's a message that either gets forgotten or neglected because it requires that individuals take responsibility. But for the last 100~ years we have been industrializing so much & relying mainly on fossil fuels to work our machines, & it's in these 100 years that climate change has truly become a concern. So maybe we should focus on the latter rather than the former. However it is much easier to convince individuals to stop eating meat than to convince an entire society &, most importantly, multi-billion dollar businesses to change to greener energy sources, & you definitely feel helpless against such a huge task, so it's easier to go for individualistic goals instead

If ruminants are fed mostly grass, why is "Grass fed" and "Grass finished" beef a thing in the US? And a thing that comes at a premium, at that.
@johnkane18003 жыл бұрын
Becuase finishing isn’t the same thing as raising; no cow can survive eating exclusively corn but to fatten it up you need to force it or use hormone
@persie80603 жыл бұрын
This american concept is so crazy to me. Most of animals are grass fed in my country. Many even freely kept. You can go and visit the farm where the animal lived. When you want to know more about the animal and the place where it lived, you buy at butcher. They know literary everything about about the animal. On the package you have every info you could possibly want. So shocking to see those cows, pigs and hens kept in cages or in small places.
@FireStormOOO_3 жыл бұрын
Massive govt funded corn subsidies that make it unnaturally cheap and used in everything. "Grass fed" price is what beef should cost if you weren't paying for part of that steak with your taxes. Very US specific political quirk mind you.

40% of our food is wasted. Of the 60% remaining, 40% is excess caloric intake (overeating). So really we are wasting 64% of our food supply while making ourselves fat and unhealthy.
@mosiah92053 жыл бұрын
That is unbelievably wild. The implications of that are insane. If western societies are getting fatter and fatter off of 60% of food supply, that should mean that we're selectively/intentionally eating the crappy stuff. I'd love to see a some time dedicated to this. Maybe someone can find more connections between the numbers and the fatness.

What's also not mentioned in these discussions is that the ruminants trap carbon in the top soil they create. Also, without the ruminants, the ground eventually turns into a desert. This is what happened in Midwestern USA during the great depression, it is what happened in the Sahara Desert, and what happened in the Middle East. The cradle of civilization is in what is now modern day Iraq and thousands of years ago, that land was fertile and filled with vegetation. We would not have been able to start civilizations in barren desert. We created the desert by stripping the nutrients from the topsoil with agriculture and not replacing it through ruminants. When there is no animal waste to create the topsoil and plants have no nutrients to grow there, then there is also no water held there either. Water will stay in an area when there are sinks to absorb, hold and evaporate it. Without the vegetation to do so, the water only evaporates and leaves the area. This is how deserts are created. They have no rain because there is no water to evaporate there; hence the term "Water Cycle"

I would also liked an interview with the oposite part of the view. Also i have so many things that don´t fit in the narrative. 1- Hoy many meat do we need to eat ? Because one thing i presume that meat consumptions nowadays is way bigger than needed. 2- Where does U.S take meat from? is it only from their farms? because importing meat from the other part of the globe may not be the most ecological way to consume and US imports a way big part of its meat. 3- What does the average meat industry? Because maybe the average farmer does not use non edible plants and prefers to use crops that are more energetic dense in order to gain more weigh in the animals and gain more money in less time. 4- Not all farms feed their cows witth grass, so the argument of the green water may be re-examined in order to look what the industry actually does. I think we need to compare what is used in the average industry not only on the U.S to know if its ecofriendly. Because maybe great part of the meat we consume does not come from farms that are efficiente with the resources as the doctor was saying, and the reality is that those methods are only being use in a small percentage of the farms. It´s like comparing the footprint of one avocado grown in the other part of the world in a very dry clima and one that is local un a clima that fits its needings.
@Yanchea3 жыл бұрын
Well I can answer #1 - unless you want a strict average it completely depends on your life style. If you have a sedentary office job, you can probably skip meals entirely, versus a very active job like a fire fighter who needs massive protein/carbs.
@maikf57413 жыл бұрын
Another point could be: how big is the footprint in the rainforest for burning it or cutting it down to grow for example soy. About 95% are for the animal to eat. And the export to europe, where you cant grow gen modificated plants
@sergiolujanlozano60083 жыл бұрын
@@maikf5741 Totally agree. I think that they are using as an example an eco-friendly farm but he industry is way worse as it looks for profit, so they use more energetic dense crops, then when you realize that a cow eats in a day the meal of 5 people its when you realize that it's not that efficient to eat meat in the "industry" mode.

we really need the opposite viewpoint. these last 2 videos only reference the one researcher who basically dedicated his entire life in pro-meat research. this reeks of meat industry (who is "coincidentally" spending millions in lobbying efforts right now) enacting the same tactics that tobacco and oil industries have done: despite having internal research on how their product harms people/environment, they fire those researchers and fund the rare researchers who align with their viewpoints. we will never learn despite tobacco companies literally getting caught red-handed doing this...

He does not mention the amount of grains used for modern cow farming. It's mentioned how US beef farming is so efficient but the reason is that US produce most of its meat not from grazing cattle but from grain feed cattle. Your main point is that cows make use of marginal land but when you are feeding cows grains grown in arable land it stop making sense because they start competing for the produce from our arable land.
