By watching this video I realized how Dante's and Vergil's movesets reflect on their personalities. Dante is a fighting prodigy that loves to fight so his moveset is always a swiss army knife that can fit into any situation, and it looks stylish because it's fun. Vergil's moves are always the most effective way to deal with every situation and being stylish is a product of it, even when he doesn't mean to. Also, I can understand why Child Dante would always want to fight Child Vergil. Imagine being born that unique and having the only person in the world that can connect with that uniqueness in your household.

You can even see this in there swords Sparda gave the brothers the swords as a lesson Dante was given rebellion to learn to accept his demon side because rebellion has the power to unite the his demon and human sides Vergil was given Yamato to show he that he can not reject his humanity to make realize the beauty of both sides
@mariemonstre Жыл бұрын
I think that's why it made it possible for Dante to laugh and forgive Vergil at the end of 5. He is the only person in the world who could possibly understand why Vergil would do the absolutely psychopathic things he did. How can anyone possibly understand what it means to be half demon? And to have the natural bloodlust dwelling inside of you, even though you never had a say in it. And that your father, somehow omnipotent, and yet completely unaware of how being half human and half demon might create turmoil within his son's mortal souls, and how lonesome and painful that might feel. On top of the trauma the endured because of actions that had nothing to do with them. I'm sure Dante has at least contemplated taking Vergil's stance on life, hence why he was so apathetic in 3 in the beginning. The only reason he pursued Vergil is because Vergil challenged him to a fight, not because he wanted to stop him. It was witnessing the person that Vergil had committed to becoming that made Dante want to change. It is easy to get swallowed up by darkness, and Dante chose not to, for the sake of his brother. And he tried to save him from himself, but Vergil was too proud. Even we as the players can never truly understand how the brothers feel or why Dante would forgive his brother.

Probably a very f***ed up thing to say but... I think they're lucky that it was Dante that got saved by Eva and I don't meant it's good that Vergil's was the one that almost died. I mean Dante's as his canon self is already very dangerous person sure he don't harm people but he always caused collateral damage to every jobs he's in even though he don't need to and that alone makes him potentially very dangerous if he decides to go against humanity. Sure if Vergil's was the one that was saved by Eva they would not have to worry about collateral damage because in canon itself Vergil's never let lose and start destroying public property when killing demons but Dante's? Imagine what would happened if Dante's was the one Eva failed to saved.

I do believe that Vergil in this path will definitely adopt more of a bushido code when it comes to his values. Makes sense given that he will still have the Yamato and train as a samurai growing up. Making him more honourable, compassionate, and justice driven. Traits he can develop as he meets these characters along the way despite initially wanting to distant himself from others so that he doesn't risk them being in danger. I do wonder how Nero will fit in to the picture and how this will affect his character. Will Vergil still go to Fortuna and stay around to raise Nero or will Dante do it instead given his reckless style of freedom and that will be inherented more within Nero as opposed to gaining more power for control?
@sev11202 жыл бұрын
I'd say Vergil would still father Nero, but he wouldn't be there all the time, occasionally dropping in to make sure that Nero's staying out of trouble. Nero would probably still develop a rebellious spirit, but it would be tempered by discipline that Vergil would instil into him in this au

Also, I forgot to add. The other way I can see Dante being split (Perhaps for real) is if Vergil catches up and fights his brother once more, except this time he's learned a bit more about the Yamoto and decides in order to stop this madness, he needs to separate his brother's humanity from his demonic side and then destroy the demon, leading to him stabbing him through the chest and splitting the two sides apart, only to seemingly kill Dante in the process with no success on splitting him... ...And little did Vergil know, he was, in reality, successful... and paved the path for a demon even he cannot best. The process was simply delayed due to the demonic side feigning death to escape Vergil long enough to recover.

So basically Vergil is similar to Batman, he has a lot of friends and a new family that cares for him, but he shuts them down and does everything alone because he cares too much if anything happens to them it will be a trigger for him of his past trauma. Dante on the other hand is mercenary that doesn't trust anyone demon or human unless manipulated and seeing Dante intellect is not his best trait he can be fooled to believe, though he would be very strong demonically that is compared to Vergil since as seen he's not even training, but he is powerful and can wield any weapon even the Yamato. If we were to assume that Dante and Vergil's luck with women don't swap, then Dante would probably spend too much time investigating the Order of the Whores in Fortuna but not be able to get an available one because they're all busy with another customer that night, since he oversleeps and gets there too late. He'd probably be drinking a bar into bankruptcy before being dragged away by a drunken woman looking for anyone to sleep with that night, desiring a spicy hot sexy demon man who would take her just like Sparda did with Eva, being a devoted church of Sparda nun or whatever. Ironically getting exactly what she fantasized. After Royal Guarding his refractory period a couple times throught the night and morning, and ending with a Royal Release, he'd leave this unnamed woman sleeping in her sweat and fluid soaked bed passed out from the intensity of their encounter. Dante casually strolls out of Fortuna wiping his forehead and sighing in the relief of no longer being a virgin. And then he'd never be lucky with women ever again.

Actually, i think if their role were reversed (Or their childhood trauma reversed, meaning Eva save Vergil instead of Dante, and Dante need to Survive from those demon as a child, all by himself), Dante would most likely lost his child personality. I dont know that much about pyschology, but from my life exprience or when seeing a cheerful friend got depressed, they tend to became very quite. So from my theory, Dante will became a very quiet killing machine who only care about fulfilling his job/Getting what he wanted. While on the case of Canon Vergil, even though he was Sinister, We can still see him smiling on many occasion, especially on the manga. But if it was this version of Dante, Then i bet he wont even smile. This darker version of Dante Will share a similiar attitude with DMC2 Dante, but more darker. He became a cold heart killer who doesnt even care about anyone's feeling. No one can bring him back to the warmth of light, no one, except Vergil. While Vergil on the other side will probably be still as cool as he is. But instead, he will gain his side of humanity through his exprience. He most likely will became aware of other people's feeling around him, he wont have any awkward conversation since he was a very understanding man. And when he realize that his little brother was still alive and walk in a wrong and evilist way, he most probably will try and "Save" him, More than Canon Dante ever did to save Vergil.

I love this. Thank you. You kind of have me on a deep dive of twin personality genetics. And one thing I keep seeing is that Openness and Neuroticism have the strongest twin genetic controls, whereas Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Agreeableness are not as strong, however it has yet to be teased out if it is because of environment or structural variants in the genes. Yet, Extraversion is strongly genetically controlled as a baseline, pointing me towards the structural variant as the factor. (I take this to mean that while identical twins may have the same identical genetic lego bricks, there's some probability that those bricks might end up being stacked differently, leading to epigenetic differences.) Like Vergil being Introverted would mean higher activity of acetylcholine, the parasympathetic nervous system, broca's region etc., compared to Dante, this is probably WAY beyond how the developers were thinking, but this difference would be playing out in identical twins of a significant Extraversion difference, which do exist. This leaves Conscientiousness and Agreeableness as the biggest differences between them that could have the strongest nurture influence. Both are chill AF, so genetically identical Neuroticism can entirely explain that. I think I can explain the Openness difference, going by Deyoung (2013) the Big 5 can be broken down to 10 aspects. The aspects indicate that Openness can scale with intelligence and temperamental(?) openness, and given how intelligence is also strongly genetically controlled, both brothers I'd argue are moderate-high in Openness as a baseline and its Dante's lack of Conscientiousness that causes him express a higher level of Openness, with the opposite occurring for Vergil. Agreeableness is one I can't isolate between them, Dante's seems to come off as agreeable but I think its just apathy / low conscientiousness, as when push comes to shove we get "get out of my way, Nero!". For Vergil, he's so closed off that he probably comes off as way more disagreeable than what he actually is. This leaves me in a can't tell / they score equally on Agreeableness. For how this would play out for Vante and Dergil. I can only add to what you've said, Vante would turn into a character you just want to hug and say "its okay", and I'm uniquely remined of the breakdown of Oskar Schindler at the end of Schindler's list as the closest example to what this would look like. "I didn't do enough". And its simply heartbreaking. While Dergil, honestly, turns into the most frightening villain, existentially. Carving a wave of destruction, collateral as the result of mere happenstance, denying everyone freedom to ensure that not even a shadow of a threat exists to Dergil's freedom. Its not that Dergil would be a tyrant, its that the dynamic would be like The Boys, you step the wrong way and you might die, as if its a natural consequence of both the law of the land and a physical one without any possibility of compensation for those who lost. Dergil would represent a force of Nature.

Vergil dressed in red reminds me of Kenshi from Mortal Kombat. I guess Eva grew up in a larger family so she took that expierence when it came to raising two sons. So her pushing Vergil to be a more responsible older brother is apart of that. Vergil being trained by someone like Genkai from Yu Yu Hakusho would be pretty fun. He'd take himself more seriously than Dante so someone who could poke fun at him and get him to lighten up would be ideal. Dante killing Trish is definitely a game changer.

Keeping in tune with Vergil's personality and his array of Devil Arms, I personally can see Vergil using other devil arms when they prove more practical for a situation compared to the Yumato. Cerebus being a clear-cut defensive example if you consider Hail Storm. Or the devil arms with access to unique devil triggers when Vergil needs one with a particular ability. Otherwise, simply keeping them as a backup in case something goes wrong with his Yamato (Losing it, stolen by a certain someone, Nero has it, etc) and he needs a weapon.

Vergil having a martial arts teacher who also doubles as a parental figure would make for some great scenes. I'm thinking kind of a The Ancient One and Doctor Strange kind of relationship. OH!! Or maybe since he made it his mission to eliminate the likeness of his mother, Trish, and when he does so, since Trish is full demon, he could become something similar to Urizen but still retain the last bits of his humanity thus motivating him further to seek the Apple. I’ve never really wanted it since I was always satisfied by Devil May Cry 3’s penultimate boss, but now I want to see more something longer not just a single fight but a game where they actively work together I think would be sick.

Now the question is...how does Nero fit into the story now?? Would he be born still?? Or he become Dante sob this time around?? If Nero is still vergil son, would that mean vergil visit fortune city, meet the lady in red (let call her Charlotte) and eventually conceive the child. And this time around, vergil actually act as a father, and his wife is around, vergil acquire a family on his own. Would the events of dmc 4 still happen?? Or better yet. Seems Dante is literally a free spirit in this timeline, one that seeks pleasure by any means. Would visit fortune first before vergil. And well, had a little adventure with another woman of fortune city, basically doing what vergil did in the original timeline. Nero would still be born, vergil and Charlotte would both live redgrave city, raising Nero together, and continue the demon hunting business. Meanwhile, in fortune city a (you can choose the gender of the child,I personally would choose a girl) the events of dmc 4 would play. With a new descendent of sparda, everything would be set for the events of dmc 5. I think that would make the story more impactu, in my opinion. Imaging having not just your brother and nephew against you, but also your daughter.

While a disdain for firearms is kind of a major part of Vergil's sense of honor, I feel like him being the protagonist would necessitate either new spells in addition to his famous summoned swords, or using said swords in new ways. All of his long-ranged abilities are chiefly focused on creating openings for melee attacks, and can even be used while attacking in melee, but he doesn't have the ability to slow his fall with their recoil, and there are a few applications where they just fall short due to costing meter, being projectiles as opposed to hitscan, or both.
@KhanhNguyen-mh5ec3 жыл бұрын
Either that or he will fashion his gun (my opinion a rifle since those are more precise and the long range) with the look of a spear.

1) Is anyone else curious to know if Nero would be any different? Nero's a Dante with Vergil's Conscientiousness from being raised by Credo and Kyrie's family (in my eyes) but with this different universe I think he'd be dante's one night stand baby like how he's canonical Vergil's 'cause it makes sense with Dante's freedom boner. Do you think he'd end up a little different? If not fundamentally, then at least between 4 and 5 since the difference would be good guy Vergil meeting and interacting with Nero, who would be a lot more calm and collected than OG Dante, but still compassionate all the same (maybe a little more so)? Would dmc5 Nero be a little more Conscientious as a result of Good boi Vergil rubbing off on him a little, especially from their inbetween game interactions. I think Vergil would keep a closer eye on Nero than Canon Dante did because of the whole control freak protectiveness but since by 4 he's had a lot of growth from 3, to 1, to the anime and 2, to now in 4. I do think he'd make Nero a part of the business and then Nero would suggest the deliver truck on his own, and I also think Vergil would get a tad more help with Nero and Kyrie. I see this Vergil as a father figure uncle rather than Canon dante's cool uncle kinda vibe, especially with freedom Dante (insert American flag) assumed dead until 5. I can't see freedom Dante passing through Fortuna with as much faf as canon Vergil, but that's kinda irrelevant to me. 2) Another thing that would interest me would be if rebellion would be used by the order of the sword as a way of turning humans into demons and a more violent way than the demon summon methods of the og order of the sword. And also, since Vergil's devil trigger informed Nero's, how would dante baby Nero's look? I think he'd be a lot closer to dante's in that it wouldn't be spectral and actually be a traditional devil trigger since rebellion would merge demon and human. Also would that affect his devil bringer? Like the more he devil triggers in cutscenes, the more it grows, like Kanbaru's rainy Devil from monogatari? 3) Also how would the order of the sword open the demon portals if Vergil's vibing out with Yamato? Would they incapacitate him all smoke and mirrors or would they overwhelm him with an early sparda statue attack? Then you could have vergil kicking ass with devil may cry 1 and/or 3 weapons like a mf bawse. 4) Also also, do you think vergil would use more styles to be a more efficient demon hunter? Like dante does it for fun sake, but would Vergil keep to darkslayer only or pick up, at the very least, a style like Royal guard since he's got enough offensive power? Fam, this alt universe gives so many avenues of exploration and speculation to think about and entertain that I just nerded the fuck out😅

Very interesting analysis! I'm not into psychology, but it's amazing I have rather similar feelings towards the twins. This post is a bit long. I just want to share a little deeper thought with you as I am also in academia like you are. Personally it feels rather odd to have different treatment of a pair of twins given that they are in exactly the same development stage at all times, but their family possibly still retains line of succession rules and the older child would become the heir apparent. That might be why their parents are more stringent at disciplining Vergil. But they apparently don't enforce such rules, as we don't see any hierarchy between the brothers and the parents don't ensure the first in line has more respect and more authority over the next one. Authority and responsibility do come in pairs. Based on such, I had scraped the idea when I made my own analysis. So to me, their parents were practicing favoritism. However, I agree Vergil has such a mindset. His entire arc in DMC3 is him trying mentor and protect his brother, but the latter misunderstood and resisted it, resulting in harming him in the process. On one hand, Vergil has matured early on and is doing exceptionally well for a person with his life experience. He is self-reliant and self-sufficient. On the other hand, he still beholds the last bit of child-like pureness and innocence in him as if the decade-long roughness hasn't tainted or inhibited him yet. From his reaction to Arkham's racial slur, he is emotionally very sensitive and vulnerable. He must have grown up with hostility and rejection from both races/worlds. He just refuses to submit and opts to stay true to himself, and remains youthful and curious, almost to the point of being wide-eyed and idealistic. Vergil is too good to do himself any good. That's what DMC3 and DMC1 told me. Canonically he suffered really badly for it, but he still remains determined and graceful without any question or complaint about anything. He's got a lot of light buried deep within. If he takes on the path of a true hero, he will just be Clark Kent, and probably more pure than Steve Rogers. As for the money part, Vergil will be very likely to pursue an academic career and keep devil hunting a side job. He is the type of person who doesn't care about money but can still manage to outperform half the world. I could imagine he will run it as a nonprofit and will use the proceeds to fund another nonprofit to help victims of demon attacks. He never seeks any payment, but for his companies' exceptional performance they will always have funding and donation coming in. For the same reasons, he never sells his devil arms but gifts them to other devil hunters so they would love to work for him. Combat wise, he is still no match to Dante, more or less because he is always calm and restrained, honorable and fair, and probably less trained and less experienced. DMC is no fairy tale. The honorable ones will suffer. The other reason is more biological. Dante could heal at over twice his speed (based on cutscenes and gameplay). Unless he owns his brother and kills him immediately, which he is too kind to do, any stretch to the fight will always favor the tankier and more enduring fighter. Vergil is a dps build. He always finishes fast. That's his fighting style, but also his only choice. Long fights always put dps builds at disadvantage in any game. He isn't exactly a glass cannon, but he's definitely not a tank. Dante though, he isn't exactly a freedom seeker. He has enough freedom to enjoy and doesn't seem to have the curiosity of his brother. For me, Dante is more of a victory seeker and sort of blood thirsty. He has a long history of struggling to contain his inner demon. Not really because he loathes himself, but more likely he has inherited a stronger demon inside, hence it becomes harder to control. He doesn't just enjoy fighting and toys with his food. He actually wants to brutalize his opponents. Canon Dante has the moral restraint to do no harm to pure humans, but he still seeks blood from demons including corrupt humans. Without that last line of morality, he could do all sorts of things to humans as well. With regard to power and weapons, Dante is actually more obsessed. He doesn't say it, but in effect he will always get whatever power and weapons he could get, and he will prevent any competitor from getting it. He never accepts defeat and will do everything he could to win. He never says it, but he never allows anyone equal or exceeding him to live, and will kill or seal them all, and that includes his brother. Those are the things he has done when he is supposedly the hero. If he becames the villain, basically no one can keep him in check single handedly. Even Vergil would have to rely on group effort to contain him. Personality wise he is probably not much different being evil or good. He will just enjoy fighting and ripping his food apart, and will still care little besides fighting. He probably won't have much worldly goals and doesn't want to be the demon king or anything particularly ambitious. He will just be himself, violent, rebellious, unrestrained, OP and unmatched. Against any single opponent, he is still always wins and never loses, although a carefully planned seige could possibly take him down. He probably won't stay dead after however many defeats either. That's in the blood of a Sparda. As a good guy he is Deadpool and Batman. As a bad guy it's basically the same, except he will not spare anyone. Skill wise, Vergil is very refined with his own weapons, but his moves typically require higher speed and precision, which imposes a higher skill ceiling, hence more restriction on weapon choice. Dante is actually less skillful at any weapon, but he makes up for it by having more weapons and more moves. He is just harder to predict. If he is not allowed to acquire new weapons and new moves any more, with time Vergil could develop enough understanding to outperform him. Power wise Dante is about the same as his brother, but he is far more talented at fighting and weapon usage. Or say, he is purely a warrior. He has a stronger inner demon, that's why his soul connects better with devil arms, and also why he needs to struggle to contain his demon and needs more humanity. Other than a personal choice, humanity is his need, because he will lose control without it. As for creativity, I tend to think it's more likely his stronger connection to his weapons and his acceptance of violence than creativity. His brother seems to actually hate fighting and just wants to end the fight faster so he could stop being bothered, while Dante wants to stretch the fight and have some fun. He has the mentality of partying while Vergil has the mentality of doing the chores. That's quite a difference and will yield very different outcomes. And Dante is probably better trained and more experienced than Vergil early on. Judging from Vergil's nervous and impulsive behavior in fight and comparing it to Dante's calm and tactical behavior in critical situations, and his better judgement and combat awareness, it's pretty conclusive to say Dante is either more experienced or simply more talented. Or possibly his inner demon keeps his body more intact and less strained. He simply doesn't tire out and has less urge to end the fight faster. For long fights, that extra bit of endurance could seriously wear the opponent out. No one in DMC universe has higher stamina than Dante. That's basically his open secret to victory.
@deathlessreaper42053 жыл бұрын
@Air are you talking about canon dante not alter dante? Sorry just a bit confusing.
@CureMiracle3 жыл бұрын
@Air Your points are interesting and not in conflict with mine. The mindset of Dante is a struggle between want and need, consciousness and subconsciousness, or say, his human heart and inner demon. He might have a purer intent and a greater ideal at heart, but his behavior is nearly always dominated by his subconscious need and desire to dominate. He loathes his father and his demonic heritage, and wants to detach from such as much as possible, but on the other hand he fights in his father's name and makes full use of his special biology. Being a demon is something he hates at heart but relies heavily in behavior. It's not at all any different than an accomplished criminal's son loathes his father's unethical behavior and refuses to engage in any such activities, but he still relies on his father's wealth and connection to achieve his objectives. Dante doesn't live to protect. He lives to revenge. "Standing for humanity" is more of a side quest. In fact, humanity is never a real priority in their world. Their world is ending and civilians are suffering, but our "heroes" are "going to a party", "having the fun", "stealing the spotlight", joking, singing and dancing with no urgency to end it earlier, etc. If Lady didn't slap sense in him, DMC3 Dante would still treat the apocalypse as nothing and the threat ahead was only a fun party for him. Vergil showed signs of remorse for a few occasions, but he nonetheless still proceeded with it. Throughout DMC3, the only one who ever cared about humanity was Lady, but she is sadly the powerless one. In DMC4, a hellgate is open, Fortuna is infested by demons, and his nephew is captured and almost killed, but Dante is still so relaxed and still makes pointless sex jokes. Credo is bleeding to death and no one has ever attempted to rescue him. Killing Agnus is also questionable. In DMC5, the Qliphoth is killing citizens in front of him, but Nero is ok with not helping, and he makes jokes with a squad member instead. He got mad not for civilians' suffering or his uncle's sacrifice, but for his own grudges. Ironically, V still has lingering corruption by Mundus in him (he has corrupt Vergil's gray skin and blue veins) but he helps the civilians at his own expense. If anyone who always takes humanity seriously, it is Lady, probably because she is full human. Dante has a strong sense of righteousness and would hardly change mind for anyone other than Nero. He responds to disagreements with violence. His conflict with Vergil in DMC3 was not about humanity but about an ideological difference. Vergil had asked him out for alliance for numerous times since a year before the event, and mentored and assisted him more or less because he still wanted Dante to change mind and ally with him. Dante accepted and practiced the "might controls everything" part, but refused the alliance. Vergil respected his decision and protected him from being trapped in the underworld, but Dante did not respect his brother's decision in the same way and killed him instead. He knew how wrong that was. He regretted it for the next 16 years. Towards powerless Lady, he would still rather beat her into submission than to let her go with him. He had the good intention to protect her, but he didn't respect her own decision and he used violence when she refused to follow him. That's far from being civil, gentle, respectful or human. If she insisted, she might also die. He saved Trish and Lucia, but both were basically orphans he adopted, and neither had actually opposed him. They both seemed scared by his power after he flashed it. Nero is about the only one in their world that could disagree with him without dying. His sense of righteousness hasn't changed over the years. Nero is just an exception to him. Not denying he was "owned" by various people in the anime and manga, but they were full humans and those people didn't actually oppose him, they just interacted with him in their own ways. Dante does manage to control his lust to torture and kill for most of the time, but at critical times his usual behavior is to maim the other and regret over it. Regarding power gain, his awakening basically tells the whole process. Before DMC3, he felt adequate for his job and had no stress to grow. After seeing real threats in DMC3, he is pressed to grow for every moment of his life and could hardly engage in anything else thereafter. Vergil basically used his own death to teach Dante the truth. He lived in Dante and made Dante who he is. Towards humanity, Dante was totally different until Lady slapped sense in him. He cared much and often behaved selfless in DMC1 and DMC2, and the times in-between (manga, anime). I agree the older version of Dante was a better person than the newer one (from DMC3 and on). After DMC4, he is showing signs of indifference again. A lot of people said he peaked in DMC2 and became weak again after he showed indifference towards humanity later on, that was why even half of his dying brother could beat him in DMC5. I sort of agree. Given Vergil's poor condition and lack of upgrades over the years, it would make sense for Urizen to beat Dante only if the latter became weaker. Regardless, yours is a good read and I've saved it ;D
